THE FIDGET STOOL Studio Spring 2017

INTRODUCTION Focusing through movement Restless people have trouble focusing and need physical movement to improve concentration. The form of the stool should suggest its intention of movement, whilst being structurally sound and complementing the work space. The design should be manufacturable in under four hours from a single sheet of 4’x4’ plywood.

Fidget - verb /‘fi-jət/

make small movements, especially of the hands and feet, through nervousness or impatience*

SKETCHES The majority of fidgeters tap their feet as a way to release their energy. One of the ways I wanted the stool to create motion was to have a flexible footrest. Finding ways for pieces of the chair to move compromised the structural integrity of the stool. With a rocking chair, the whole stool moves and is strong enough for the user to rock.

ITERATIONS After creating a stool that could hold weight and function, the design needed to reflect the oscillation of the chair visually in the seat pan and the runners. I explored cut outs for the legs of the chair, but ultimately decided it added too much visual chaos while greatly weakening the structure. To keep the manufacturing of the stool simple, I refrained from using screws for the final. The entire stool is pieced together using wood glue as to not mar the surface with the screws.

verser measuring cap Accessibility Studio 2018

INTRODUCTION Baking is a science as well as an art. It requires accurate measurements for key flavors such as vanilla extract, which contribute largely to the balance of a perfect baked good. Measuring and pouring these liquids can be easy for sighted people, but is hard for those with low vision who cannot distinguishing changes in volume without touch. To create an improved experience, the process of measuring and pouring needed to be simplified into one step. As blind Professional Chef Christine Ha noted, it would need “an advantage over spoons, since you’d essentially be submerging either tool into the larger vessel containing the liquid.”

ITERATIONS To reduce these time consuming steps, along with minimizing the chance of spilling and underfilling the measuring spoon, I decided that the measuring device needed to be a cap. With cap on the bottle, it eliminates the need for the measuring spoon and bowl, and its universal connecter fits on any sized bottle. The measurements can be set to 1/8, 1/4, 1/2, and 1 tsp, it also comes in 1/2 and 1 TBSP for larger bottles. After setting the measurement, the bottle is inverted to a pour position, the button is pressed, and the measured amount is released from the spout.

Constance Independent Project 2018

INTRODUCTION Individuality and personality through style and scent People express themselves through their own signature styles, and they can truly feel confident in who they are when that’s reflected; whether it be through clothing, accessories, or by fragrances. Two ways people can elevate their own signature style is by adding an accessory and a scent. These fundamental pieces can defined and transition anyone’s style to another level. Both watches and perfumes can be distinct pieces to express a person’s personality, as well as pieces to collect and display in a person’s home.

ITERATIONS I created an exclusive perfume watch brand, Constance, and in collaboration with different fragrance brands, the limited edition collectibles would look similar to their bottled counterparts. The perfume housed in the watch face would slowly be released into the wristband onto the wearer’s wrist from the activation of heat from the user’s pulse point. The heat from the wrist also maximizes the perfume for a longer lasting scent, while mixing with the user’s own chemistry to create their own unique fragrance.

THE WAYFAIRER SoftGoods Studio 2017

INTRODUCTION Traditional briefcases and handbags are exhausting to carry over a single shoulder. A simple convertible bag for the shoulder to back can easily alleviate stress by evenly dispersing the weight across the back. The bag should be secure and durable to carry a laptop, notebooks, along with important documents. By reflecting a minimalistic aesthetic for security purposes, it should be durable enough to prevent theft in crowded areas, while providing the user easy access to the interior. Features of this bag: USE IN PROFESSIONAL SETTINGS, CONVERTIBILITY, SECURITY AND DURABILITY, AND MINIMALISTIC.

SKETCHES The idea of minimalism is quality over quantity with only the essentials remaining. To reflect that concept, I created the bag out of natural materials without hardware. The form would be simple and easy to manufacture using only felt, leather,

magnets, and thread. The durable materials along with the lack of hardware prevents potential thieves from slashing or unclasping the bag to remove items. Figuring out different ways to convert the bag, along with limiting access the the interior, but keeping it accessible to the user was quite challenging. Furthermore I needed to keep in consideration the amount of interior space that the user would need.

ITERATIONS Planning steps to sew a bag seemed simple until interior components and exterior components were introduced on the same panel. I had to be careful not to sew pockets in the interior shut while preventing lines of stitching from showing on the exterior. With a limited amount of the costly resources, I had to be incredibly meticulous with the measurements, cuts, and sewing allowances while accounting for the behavior of the mechanical properties of the materials.
