I learnt from my Mother to follow my heart, my dreams, and to be not afraid. Not to let any obstacle stand in the way, and to always try my best. And then there was Muse. Now my aim is to inspire, the way I was inspired. Every young creative needs a Muse.
If you are reading this, then you are officially a reader of Muse magazine, the newest addition to the Vice family. Dedicated to providing the young reader with cutting edge fashion and creative content, we aim to inspire and motivate. Welcome to issue 1, dream big. To celebrate the launch, this month we give you all things Muse. Aspirations and inspirations. Creativity and talent. Fashion and more fashion. We have chosen a selection of exciting features and interviews including the young emerging talent feature with some of Britain’s youngest accomplished designers, artists and bloggers. We want to show you, how to dream big and how to get there. We aim to keep you on your toes at all times. Our innovative range of content is at the forefront of change, ensuring our magazine is one of kind, and it doesn’t stop there. If you just can’t get enough of the latest edition to your magazine rack, then please head over to Muse Daily, our online publication, with frequent daily posts including exclusive behind the scenes footage of the making of Muse.
Thank you for picking up this very first edition of Muse magazine, and thanks also to the extremely talented group of contributors and creatives. Firstly, the amazing photographers, Robyn berry, Madeleine Farris, and Chloe Anne Charnock, who have worked side by side with me to finalise all of our creative editorial ideas this month (which I am even more excited to share with all you wonderful readers.) The fabulous team of creatives, including make up artists, models and very helpful assistants. My advisors, who helped me manage this project which at first didn’t seem possible; Charlie Goldthorpe, Stephen Wigley and Claire Allen. Most of all my family and friends who have had to put up with me throughout this very stressful time. (You can finally relax!) And finally from this months, young emerging talent, and Muse of the Month features, Nicole Jopek, Liam Golden, Megan Elbany, and Jessica Shaw, without you, these exciting features would not have been possible. Thank you! .. and breath! Here’s to the first and hopefully many more inspiring issues of Muse magazine. Geiger Come-Back! The shoe brand, Kurt Geiger, has been bought back by its CEO Neil Clifford alongside other members of the brands management team. The brand was originally sold to US private equity group Sycamore Partners earlier this month as a part of the Jones group. Sycamore Partners agreed to split the brands from the Jones group, in order to support the bid from Geiger employees. Sycamore Partners has extensive retail experience, and Clifford states he is thrilled by their most recent support. Director of Sycamore Partners, Stefan Kaluzny, also added the company has a great deal of respect for the brand with a “deep history of partnership with exceptional department stores, and its own distinctive portfolio of footwear brands.” The new deal between Sycamore and Geiger ensures Clifford and his team have full control over global expansion for the brand. Both Sycamore and the team at Kurt Geiger believe the brand has great potential for growth in the UK and internationally. Clifford also added that: “Our company is passionate about product, and we will carry on our legacy of offering the most exciting and innovative footwear, bringing the creativity of British design talent to a global audience.”

The Fashion World of Jean Paul Gaultier: From the Sidewalk to the Catwalk From April 9th - August 25th The Jean Paul Gaultier, Sidewalk to Catwalk exhibition is at the Barbican, EC2. (Lucky us!) Gaultier’s three decade career has been distinguished by a riot of sound movement and colour. Not usually associated with fashion, it appears Gaultier’s signature quality is humour, which makes for a refreshing change amongst the haute couture fashion world. The Fashion World of Jean Paul Gaultier: From the Sidewalk to the Catwalk is a new exhibition opening this month at the Barbican and the designer uses a variety of techniques to represent his playful character and collections. Combining video projections, and life like mannequins, their expressive faces smile, speak and sing to visitors. One mannequin projects Gaultier’s own face. Alongside, sketches, photography and video footage, Gaultier’s irreverent personality and designs are shown in the form of 140+ outfits. The clothing on show, represents the fashion house ‘codes’ from sailor garb to corsets.
The exhibition speaks his love of music and the apex of his fame, best expressed through the Conical Bra Basque worn by Madonna throughout her 1990 Blonde Ambition tour. Other exhibits include tuxedo jumpsuits, embroidered gowns and film costumes. Gaultier states: “It’s difficult to single out one piece, each once is like a child to me.” (Hence the 140+ pieces) To accompany the exhibition, a mobile app is available for all smart phones to enhance the Jean Paul Gaultier experience. Every creative needs a muse, but this month we are crushing on and totally envying Jessica Shaw, an emerging label and massively talented designer. The most recent collection; 'Dreams of Lolita' is working its way up the Muse fashion ladder, and we predict the only way is up. In fact, the label inspired us so much that we just had to feature an interview, so take a peak for an interesting insight in to the world of Jessica Shaw. The dreams of Lolita collection embodies floral glittery and frilly dresses. With an electric mix of pink, green and blue, velvet dresses, pom-poms, fur trims, and tulle skirts, the style is somewhere between granny chic and my Little Pony. Inspired by dressing up, the collection unravels the story of free spirited Lolita: a fun, carefree day dreamer, living in a hazy, girly bubble. Hi Jess, so fab to finally meet you. How does it feel to officially be our Muse of the month? I felt so honoured when I received the call. I’m just excited to answer your questions. Let’s get started then! First of all, can you tell us a little bit more about yourself, and the label? How did you get to where you are today? I have always being fascinated with fashion how it can transform a person and its driven by diversity and originality. Im a hyper romantic designer who designs for the bold and the beautiful with an aesthetic that embodies an electric mix of fabrics layers to create ultra feminine designs.

I launched the label in 2012 after a trip to India; seeing all the beautiful colour inspired me to produce "Blue Utopia" a dipped dyed blue gaze collection heavily lace embroidered. I have always been interested in fashion as far back as I can remember dressing up in my mums puffy sleeved wedding dress never wanting to take it off! My university course at Middlesex was a great platform to build on my passion and skills to produce the ideas I fantasied about . “Dreams Of Lolita” Is my latest collection. I’m super excited about this ! A collection inspired by YOUTH! The coming of age and dressing-up. Legend princess meets mum’s dress-up box. Who is this Jessica Shaw customer? The Jessica Shaw customer is BOLD and BEAUTIFUL! A free spirited, fun loving and carefree girl. Describe your label in 3 words. Bold, hyper and romantic. Is there a secret ingredient to your designing and making process? The secret ingredient is just passion and research I’d say. It takes time to develop the ideas into beautiful garments from the initial research where your ideas and designs stem from. But I also love developing the collection from the first sketch to samples and spending hours in the studio draping fabric on the stand, it just excited me to see the ideas come to life from a sketch or messy doodle! I love to illustrate my ideas and sketch as much as I can. Designers are always looking and searching for inspiration where ever they find it. Photography is one of my main influences, and art. Inspiration doesn't come from previous fashion movements but in life itself. Trends in fashion often have deeper links to movements in popular culture, and I do appreciate fashion as a tool of selfexpression . Fashion these days is fast and almost throw away with all the cheap high street stores. I think people should invest in quality products and buy few high quality products rather than mass poor quality products.

What's on your inspiration board? My inspiration board for “Dreams of Lolita” was like a princess candy coloured hazy dream! Pink red, glittery trims exploding from boxes! I have a lot of child hood snaps and princess images. Lots of Frida Kahlo's work and Monet paintings I love the colour he uses in his work. plus my images from my tumblr page, I can spend hours just looking at them, Im just drawn to anything pink glittery and fun. Check out my tumbler for some fun Kawaii things to see my inspiration - Jessicashawlabel What's your favourite piece from "Dreams of Lolita" so far? I think my favourite pieces from Lolita is the green glittery mermaid dress and I love the pink tulle pom- pom princess dress!! you can layer it over any outfit to add some fun to it! What is the ultimate dream or goal for Jessica Shaw? My ultimate dream is to develop the label within the next year, hopefully make a living out it. To keep designing developing my skills. I would love to gain stockist in Japan and London boutiques. I feel Japan is the perfect place for my label- I can just see all the harajuku girls in my dresses. Yelp! That would be a dream come true! To reach new horizons with designing and have fun in the meantime. What comes next for the label? What's your future plan? The next step for the label is to have an online store set up so everyone can own a Jessica Shaw piece. Yelp!! I would love to gain sponsorship from NEWGEN or Fashion East, there is a lot of support available for new designers it would be a dream to have sponsorship. And more travelling- you get the best inspiration from the diverse cultures around us.

Dream BIG Words by Stephanie Maguire For anyone who hasn’t yet realised, the team at MUSE are all about ambitions, dreaming and inspiring. This month we bring you; Dream BIG.

At a young age we often ask ourselves what we will achieve when we finally ‘grow up’. Some of us will never really know. Whilst reading this article, you are most likely questioning your goals, achievements and dreams; your deepest secrets and most passionate desires. Everyone will have at least one. But the real question is, how many of you will actually reach your goals. It may seem like a pessimistic way to look at it, but to achieve your dream, you have to push yourself, put your self through hell and back, be the best of the best, and most of all dream BIG! The bigger the better, and if it’s easy, then it’s not worth it. The start of the race, is often the biggest struggle and most people have no idea how to actually achieve their dreams. What they do possess, is only a mere notion. But how do you get from A to B? A being a dream, and B being reality. Here at Muse, we want to prepare you for the challenge ahead. One day, you will find yourself not knowing which direction to take next. BUT, if you start now, and prepare to put your dream to the ultimate test, then you have a promising future for success. It’s that simple. Can we hear you say easy peasy? What is a good dream? Try to define a dream and the list is, as they say; endless. To name a few: a day dream or distraction, a bad dream or nightmare, a dream where only you are in control, dreams lived through others, a romantic dream where love will make you happy, a career dream where success drives your desires, or a material dream, when money and wealth motivate happiness. A dream worth pursuing, inspires and energises your mind, but also calls on a unique path empowering you to do everything possible to achieve it.
Do not fear.. Dreams are supposed to be big, but not unreachable. Understanding the reasons why a dream may seem unachievable, or why you have lost all hope, can actually be the answer to reconnecting with your greatest goals. Remember, you are only young so you still have your whole life to achieve your goals, or even make new ones, but the world is full of dream crushers and party poopers. Don’t let this put you off. If someone knocks you off the ladder, you hold your head high and get straight back up, with more determination than before. Don’t just settle for average. Dreams require a person to stretch; to challenge themselves, beyond average. The words safe, and dream are not compatible. If you don’t step out of your comfort zone, you will never know the possibilities at the other side. You don’t need to have a wild imagination to dream big. Define your dream, and go after it, but don’t worry if you want to add some flavour in along the way. This is your dream, you can try your best to control it and live it. Finally, dreams are bold, specific and consistent. Meaning don’t just dream big, dream HUGE; and don’t change your mind tomorrow, if it’s a real dream, it’s here to stay.

Over the past year, 21 year old fashion intern and enthusiast Megan, has been blogging a personal style diary, and oh boy, she certainly has a knack for it. It seems for Megan, the term ‘eat, sleep, breath’ fashion really does come naturally. Her style has captured the hearts of the fashion industry and propelled her blog in to the limelight, and we predict it’s only going to get better for Pages

It’s our absolute pleasure to introduce Megan Ellaby, as she opens up her life to us, and we get an extra exclusive insight in to Pages by Megan. Here at Muse, we want to show the reader it is possible to dream BIG! It was 12 noon at Muse HQ, and not a minute later, in flounced Megan, Elegant as ever, draped in that staple pink, we were green with envy. Take a peek at her OOTD (outfit of the day).
Are there any perks to blogging? Yes lots, its all based on perks if you ask me, I get to write about fashion and work with some truly incredible brands to produce some work that we're both proud to promote. How do you manage to juggle both blogging and studying? I wouldn't say I needed to juggle, blogging is something I am very passionate about and therefore I will always find the time. I take photographs of the clothes I wear on a daily basis so that literally only takes 10 minutes out of my day. I then write up the posts on an evening in bed, so all in all its probably only 30-60 minutes a day, which is when most people wind down and watch television I guess. What accessory could you not live without? Hats, I'm loving hats right now, whether its a beanie, fedora or a baker boy, I love hats!
What inspired you to start your blog? I started it as a way to document my internships while on placement from uni, as we were told to keep a diary. I interned at some great places including House of Holland, ASOS & Alexander McQueen so people were interested and it just went from there. What has been your greatest achievement so far since you started blogging? Being featured in magazines is always crazy, i've been in Look Magazine a few times, I went down to London for a shoot with company magazine and i've recently featured in You Magazine, and Nylon, its madness!

Where do you see yourself in 5 years time with blogging and your career? I’d love to be still blogging and to be making some form of income from it. I’d also love to have a successful job in styling!

Introducing
Once upon a time, in a land far, far away (Huddersfield) we stumbled across the most talented girl in the kingdom. It sounds like a fairytale, but here at MUSE, we spoke to student photographer Nicole Jopek, about success, ambitions, and how to make that dream a reality. Hi Nicole, How long have you been a photographer? I've been practicing photography for about 5 years now since College, but have only really considered myself as a 'photographer' in the past year. I have had quite a few instances where the title of being a 'student' has changed the way others view your work, so the start of this last academic year I dropped the 'student' title and began to really believe in my work and put myself out there as an actual photographer. I feel by doing that, I have then had the space and time to really push my style and develop my practice without focusing on the small things that may have been bringing me and my work down at times.

How did you know photography was what you wanted to do? Throughout College I didn't know which direction I wanted to take in terms of a career, however I knew that I was to end up doing something creative. I had picked a handful of subjects at A Level that were really tough, and I saw Photography as my escape from all this. I often thought about graphic design or illustration but they just never captured me the way Photography eventually did. It was only when my teacher at the time sat me down and told me that I could do it if I put my mind to it and had the determination to want to go far - and that is when I made the decision that Photography was the exact route I wanted to take, there was nothing else that I wanted to put my heart into more than this.
How would you describe your photography style and what do you most like shooting? The one word that is continuously used to describe my work by other people is 'clean', and for the longest time I couldn't see my style until recently. But when I think about it, that is exactly what I want my work to be, to be clean, strong, and straight. Even when I look back at my images from the past 5 years where my technical skills were far from strong (or average for that matter!) I still see elements of me today in them, I guess thats a style that had just started from the beginning. In terms of what I love shooting most it's definitely editorial fashion/beauty. My brain is constantly overflowing with ideas that I want to shoot with my closest creatives (makeup artists, stylists etc.) I'm always wanting to push my retouching with every shoot that I do, so I'm a working machine that just never stops.

I was upset when my PC laptop died, around the time I started Photography because I don't like change, but moving over to Mac was the best thing I did in terms of editing, I don't think I could ever go back!

Where do you hope to see yourself in five years time? I never really know how to answer questions like this because I know we all want to be successful and happy in what we do, but I honestly don't know what the future holds for me. Ideally I would love to have my own studio, be able to continue to shoot what I love to shoot, build a strong client base, and most of all be happy in what I do, but I guess that is something we never know until we get there. What has been your biggest achievement so far? I think I would have to answer this question in regards to my retouching. Going way back before I developed an interest in Photography, at the age of 12 I was always fascinated by Photoshop and the wonders it could do. I started up my own graphics website with my best friend and we’d often make celebrity wallpapers and graphics for others to download (didn’t bother us that we only had about 1 view a month) but it was something we put our heart into.
79 I would often take the unedited photoshoot images of celebrities and work on them as if I was the professional retoucher and it was a serious job I had just landed. I would then compare my versions to the already existing edited images out there and see what my faults were, where I could improve, and it was all just a huge learning curve at that age. A good few years later when I realised I could take my own photographs and edit them in this way I had been doing for so many years, was when I really made that final connection to photography. Ever since then I have been editing on the sideline of my own work, and have recently started putting myself out there as a retoucher as well as a photographer. From there I have had a number of jobs from photographers in not only England, but photographers in places such as New York as well. Because retouching is a practice that forms so much of my own work, it’s so nice to start being recognised for my post production work as well as my own photography.
Have you got any advice for aspiring photographers? My advice to other photographers wanting to get into the line of fashion photography - never stop! You have to be constantly researching fashion, reading, watching, listening, it has to really become a part of your life. But most of all you need that determination to want to succeed, to always want to push yourself further. Yes we all have those down days where a shoot goes wrong and you feel you’ll never get anywhere, never be anything, never be recognised, but this is where everyone starts. It’s ok to feel overwhelmed with everything, but never for a second stop what you love doing most! You need to be constantly challenging yourself and pushing your own work - try to do something out of your comfort zone once in a while, try new ideas, experiment. The first few years of photography is the ideal time to experiment, and whenever you get the chance to be able to do this always take it! No one said it would be easy, but I’m willing to take on every challenge and curveball I encounter in life.

Hi Liam, In the simplest terms, can you please explain what exactly you do? Haha, yep! I make 3D models on the computer and also make digital artwork by painting with photoshop. Sounds difficult! How did you know, this was what you wanted to do? It wasn't, it just kinda went that way. In Uni I concentrated mainly on 3D modelling but then after graduating, I began to do more 2D painting, as a break from 3D. After a while I developed my own look and style which people seem to be picking up on. What has been your greateast achievement so far? Errrm... I was a runner up last year at the D&AD awards in London which was pretty cool. Also ive got a four page feature and interview coming out shortly in Advanced Photoshop Magazine. Wow do you're really getting your name out there! Are you a Mac or a PC lover? I'm not going to start a war, but I have used both for many years as they both have pros and cons. Currently i'm using a high spec laptop that I built myself. Is there no end to your talents?! Haha. Where do you see yourself in five years time? Hmmm it's hard to say. It started out as more of a hobby but it's getting me noticed here and there. I think I will continue to concentrate on the the film industry to do special effects. It's something I have always been interested in. I will just have to see where life takes me to be honest.

Finally Liam, what advice would you give to teens wanting to get in to this line of work? If you want to get into it make sure you love it. Spend time learning all the softwere which seems pointless at the time, fill your brain with as much information and new innovative things and it can take. Constantly keep ontop of whats going on now and whats trending. but most if all don’t treat it like a chore or it will be.

The Rise of the Male Model Words by Stephanie Maguire
Until just recently, male models walked at least 2 steps behind their female counterparts. Modelling is one of the few industries where men are often payed less, and generally take a back seat in comparison to prominent female supermodels. However, is this about to change? Does the industry have a male equivalent to Kate Moss on the horizon? With the word supermodel, we often refer to the Naomi Campbell’s, the Cindy Crawford’s, or the Candice Swanepoel’s of the fashion world, and for a large part of the past decade, the industry has been dedicated to womenswear. Last year, London Fashion Week, launched a mens only Fashion week, and rightly so. Although it doesn’t take a genius to discover that women have a much greater interest, (or even a slight obsession) with fashion than men, the mens fashion industry along with male modelling is now worth a serious 18 billion dollars. In fact, menswear has seen a steady economic growth, and now both highstreet brands and luxury designers are injecting more time and energy to boost sales, communications and advertising for mens collections. So, what better time than ever, for the rise of the male model. Whilst we are starting to see a few names become more and more frequent, face of D&G; David Gandy for example, most male models remain masked to audiences. For instance; how many male models, with faces plastered on billboards and advertisements, would you truly recognise and point out in the middle of a crowd? Yet a face like Cara Delevigne, has 4.1 million Instagram followers, and is still recognised by the least fashion conscious consumer.
With womenswear still dominating the industry, male models have often been disposable, and used as props in the past. However, with society and popular celebrity culture developing, this concept has changed along with the emerging male model. To a contemporary audience, it’s notable for a new face to enter the industry, solely relying on modelling, particularly for males. The advance on culture and modern audiences make for perfect timing for the modelling industry. The real question is, can a male model have the same impact and level of influence on contemporary audiences, as supermodels such as Cara Delevigne or Kate Moss? The works of luxury fashion houses on behalf of menswear show extraordinary and continuous growth but does this mean we can expect the same kind of collaborations with high street brands and celebrity model faces that we see with womenswear? Whilst it is confirmed mens campaigns are reaching wider audiences, with their faces becoming more familiar and established, will they ever compare to the female supermodel. The industry is continuously growing season by season and the chasm between the womenswear and menswear has decreased, which indicates a step in the right direction. Here at Muse, we have every faith in young male models to establish themselves in the industry, so we wanted to take some time, to educate you with the finest male faces at the moment. Lorde At the moment, you’re probably revising for that important exam, deciding on your next career path, or perhaps you’re more hung up on what outfit to wear tomorrow, but there’s a new generation of teen tycoons on the loose. A surge of superwomen teens are conquering the business world and guess what? They’re just like you. Well almost. What’s great about this recent spate of world-famous teenagers; they appear to be completely level headed, and transcend the usual stereotype of the ‘child star’. Teen stars of the 90’s for example; Macaulay Culkin, Lindsey Lohan, and Britney Speares, all ‘went off the rails’ and headed for self destruction - and for a short time, it became the norm, or perhaps the natural response, to a public life of world wide fame. Any amount of fame must be overwhelming (not that we would know), but for a child, or young adult, not yet prepared for the
mixed adoration and hostility which fame brings with it, you would expect a bumpy ride to adult hood. Well think again. Multi-Grammyaward-winning Lorde, is just one of the self-made young females, and success at a young age couldn’t be any better for the 17 year old Musician. For those of you that don’t know, (have you been hiding under a rock for the past year?) Lorde is the talented artist behind Royals, and the track transformed her in to a worldwide superstar. Signed to Universal at the astonishing age of 12, her music and lyrics are inspired by Sylvia Plath, Kanye West and Prince. Yes, we agree, it’s a strange mixture, but she makes it work.

As well as underage, the new breed of teenage businesswomen, are professional, media savvy, motivated and most of all inspiring. A list of attributes that we all aim for, and probably envy. Tavi Gevinson, also 17, is amongst this list of inspiring teens. At 12 years old, she founded style rookie, a blog specifically for teenagers, and in April 2010 the blog transformed in to masterpiece online magazine; Rookie. (rookiemag. com) This is all just a bit much for us here at Muse. At the age of 17 Tavi has launched her own business and inspired thousands of teenagers, via her successful website, all whilst she admits, she is still figuring things out. The website features monthly issues and themes related to young girls, and the online publication now has a team of talented Rookie mag staff. Its hard enough being a teenager at the best of times, for these girls are role models and we would love it if our Muse readers wanted to follow in their footsteps. Kiernan Shipka, aged 14, plays a vital role in TV series Mad Men, and what’s more, her character is one of the most diverse and interesting in one of the best TV shows of all times. Kiernan plays Sally Draper, Don Draper’s preteen, troubled daughter, and at such a young age, her talent really shines. In reality she is both sensible and pragmatic, making her the perfect candidate for the new generation of teen business women. Here at Muse, we particularly find this article inspiring, and it’s safe to say the most of us are past our teenage years, but we hope that this group of inspirational young women, can drive our readers to succeed and motivate other young girls to feel determined and achieve success. We all have flaws, and weaknesses, and these girls admit that, which makes it 10x more achievable and relatable. They are just like us.

Sharing or Oversharing? The Truth About the
#Selfie
We’re a culture obsessed with social media, but is there such a thing as over-sharing? Shouldn’t there be some things left to the imagination? Words by Stephanie Maguire
There’s no denying it. Before you leave the house in the morning, and pose for a carefully orchestrated mirror selfie #wiwt or send a smug snap chat from the front row of a concert; ‘wish you were here’. We upload our every move to Instagram and idealise our everyday lives. That’s what it’s all about really, we filter our photos, and build a mirage that makes our lives seem much more beautiful then they really are. We want to frame our experiences in to the best light possible, and what’s really so wrong with that? We all have moments we are proud of, or want to share with our friends. But the reality is, the moment you upload that #saturdayselfie from the weekend, you await the moment the sacred ‘likes’ come rolling in. With over 350 million photos published to Facebook each day, as well as 55 million to Instagram, it doesn’t take a genius to figure out, Humans crave self-disclosure and flattery. When receive a ‘like’ via a social networking platform, it activates the same kind of pleasure we receive from food or falling in love. We are vein, and lets face it everyone loves a compliment. We await the long overdue ‘like’ of approval, from that one guy who you went on a date with 3 months ago, but we dread the moment someone tags you in a photo, from that awful oscars style selfie at last weeks 'crazy' house party.
Isn’t it all just becoming a bit too much though? Is social media really both the cause and the answer to all of our problems? When we live in a culture of competitive bragging, is the thought of living without social media, just for a day or a night, such a bad thing? It’s doable. This is why, when we discovered an increasing amount of clubs are now refusing the camera phone we wanted to share our opinion. We get it, your initial reaction will be over the top, ridiculous, ‘they can’t do that’, but have a listen to what we have to say about the recent pandemic. In London, clubs such as Soho and Shoreditch House, would have you shown straight to the door, with a mere Facebook ‘check in’ or camera flash. Both of which however, are exclusive establishments, and banning the camera phone generates a little mystery, and the truth is, it goes a long way. Ask yourself this, if you knew all of your friends were hanging out at lets say, establishment 1, and it was plastered all over Facebook, Instagram and Twitter, from the toilet selfies, to the cocktail serving times. Or, establishment 2, was open to exclusive members, and only if you visit establishment 2, could you enter their exciting and mysterious world. So there is a possibility you might be disappointed and it might not be all what you expect it to be, but which establishment are you more intrigued about? Which seems more exclusive? Which one would make you feel like an A-lister? We all know social media has its pro’s and its con’s, and I am most certainly guilty of a selfie, as well as twitter stalking a crush, and posting a myriad of photos all over Facebook, but how many times has social media left you feeling over-exposed? The rise of technology combined with the camera phone, and social media, has left us with less control over what people can see us doing.

A few too many times, I have woken up on a Monday morning, feeling vulnerable to Facebook. Why is it, my Facebook friends can see what I did on saturday night but I can’t remember? So maybe a few too many g&t’s were consumed on my behalf, but the point is, we shouldn’t have to worry about who flashes a camera in a drunken moment and uploads it 10 seconds later. Other night clubs in Europe which have rules against the use of the camera phone include; Paris’ Le Baron, and Berlin’s Berghain, in order to protect their celebrity clientele. Although for many of us, we won’t fall prey for the paparazzi, for both Le Baron and Berghain customers, it undoubtedly winds down to being left vulnerable and over exposed to the eyes of the camera lens.

With technology on the ultimate high in popular culture at the moment, we can now capture memories more than ever, and sharing with friends and loved ones via mobile apps make’s its easy and accessible for all audiences. This is a feature I am eternally grateful for, as I am sure most of you are, but equally, just think of how many moments we miss whilst staring endlessly in to our tiny blue screens. Perhaps some memories are better left just for us, for the mind to remain there forever. Isn’t it more personal that way? More special?
Although, there probably isn’t many times when you will see me without my phone in my hand, (disguised in it’s cute penguin case) on my next holiday, or night out, or first date, or any other significant date for that matter, I will be leaving my smart phone at home. Wearable Technology Words by Stephanie Maguire
There’s been a rumour going round here in MUSE HQ, and it seems a few of us have come to the conclusion that before long; we’re all going to be cyborgs. The reason being, the recent rise of ‘wearable technology.’ The trend first began with the long awaited Google Glass, and is unfortunately seen as a laughable early prototype, soon to be a distant memory. Google Glass is an eye wear device made pointlessly, to cut out three tiny seconds in which it takes to remove your phone from your pocket. Instead, it transfers the information from your smart phone directly to your retinas, making you look quite the fool. We agree, it’s totally lazy and really quite unnecessary. Whilst we don’t criticise the revolutionary advance in technology and the amazing talent and knowledge of the team behind the device, we just don’t see the practicality. However, Google Glass has paved the way for a number of tech start ups to improve the ways of every day life, by adding more and more devices to both our clothing and bodies. We wanted to round up a selection of advances in wearable technology and see what all the fuss is about.

Phone Charging Clothes We can’t help but feel a little bit excited for this one. Seem’s like the answers to all of our prayers, no? Start-up company, Wearable Solar, is developing ways to charge your smart phone with clothes and accessories. The clue is in the name really, but the aim is to harness energy from the sun. Although admiral, I can’t help but wonder, what happens when it rains - 24/7 because at the end of the day it is England? Cloudy weather diminishes the generating capacity of solar devices by 50% compared to direct sunlight, however it does mean, that despite our constantly cloudy British climate, it is still suitable. Golf Swing Analysing gloves For all you sport savvy readers, this might be of interest. The Zeep Golfsense glove, can sense speed, plane, tempo and hip angle, which the information then transfers directly to your smart phone for you to analyse and watch over. This could potentially be the answer to all of your golfing problems, however we have a feeling you probably don’t like criticism. The last thing you will want to hear is a robotically calm voice, pointing out where your going wrong. It’s a bit like having your nagging other half on the drive with you.
An experience enhancing rave bracelet Ever been to a party and your too hot, stuck between two elbows of the party goers beside you, and overall just feel a little bit uncomfortable? In comes the Lightwave Interactive Wristband to the rescue. The device monitors sound levels, movement and temperature, and then feeds data directly to the DJ. The information can then be used to alter lighting and track selection and to change the environmental conditions. According to founder and CEO Rana June, ‘the goal is to provide deeper more meaningful insights about what’s happening.’ Maybe it’s the raver deep inside of us, but we just want to have fun, not analyse our fun levels. Clothes that operate Facebook This is taking social media to a whole new, terrifying level. The platform already controls a large part of our lives without incorporating it in to our wardrobes. A hard one to fathom, a company called Electric Foxy have invented Ping. Ping is a garment which connects you to Facebook wirelessly from anywhere. Not that everyone already uses their 3G phone to do this anyway, but to the use garment/device, you ‘simply’ make every day gestures such as lifting a hood or tying a bow. The garment which incidentally looks like a dressing gown isn’t the most fashionable piece to add to your wardrobe. The clock is ticking. Yes, we are talking about the countdown to Summer and those impending intern application deadlines.
Plus, its a great talking point for your CV, and future interviews. Make yourself jump off that piece of paper. Stand out amongst the competition.
Don’t you just hate it when it seems everyone around you has their ‘dream Summer job’ or bagged that exciting Summer placement ? Your coursework is taking over; your convinced you will be stuck in your small hometown village for life because no employer will ever give you a chance without the all important, taboo internship? Right?
3. Volunteer
Wrong. We want to show you; our fabulous readers that you have the potential to go far, without a Summer Internship. There are some really great worthwhile alternatives that are guaranteed to catch the eye of a prospective employer. You just need a push in the right direction. 1. Get a ‘real’ job By real, we mean paying. But, don’t just settle for anything. Try and find one that relates to both your educational and professional goals. Having a job proves you have the skills and qualities needed for any career path, such as organisation, professionalism, punctuality, the list goes on! Don’t be afraid to tap in to your contacts. Networking is important in any industry and the sooner you get your name out there, the better. Get your foot in the door and grab some vital experience. Make sure you get the most out of your experience in whatever you do. 2. Travel Travelling not only means you get to see the world, but it gives you real life experiences and develops on your independence. Furthermore, it can show your enthusiasm and passion towards travelling but also worldwide culture.
There is a great selection of volunteering opportunities available, and its a worthwhile cause to give something back, as well as working on something you feel personally strong about. A volunteering program shows potential employers you are motivated and driven and once again, it makes your CV that little bit more interesting than the standard: ‘I did a Summer internship’ application. Try looking online on platforms such as Gap 360, or Projects Abroad. You can stay local, or travel across the world, but you can also volunteer in your particular area of interest. Do some research, you will be amazed at what you find.

4. Keep Studying Ok, so this might not sound like the most interesting or fun alternative, but in fact there are so many different night or part time courses available in a wide variety of areas. The chances are, you will have interests in multiple areas of your industry, so what’s the harm in exploring that? Why not look at courses in a City, you have yet to explore yet, or if you are intent on living at home throughout the Summer, have a look online. Look at practical jobs combined with courses which can really show off your skills and boost your portfolio. 5. Become an Entrepreneur For all you Mark Zuckerbergs out there, if you can’t find an Internship or alternative program which suits you, make your own. Go on, whats stopping you. You might have an interesting idea, or a dream which you want to see through to reality. This is your chance to make it happen. You might be an aspiring photographer, aiming to set up your own business. Print yourself some business cards, create yourself an online page and get marketing. Even if it’s just a weekend thing to get yourself started. This can show great potential to future employers, and as well as raking in some extra cash, it builds up your portfolio. So, the next time you hear it; INTERN INTERN INTERN.. Don’t fret. There are plenty of options out there for you, you just have to decide which one and make it happen.

Girls, this month it’s all about updating them tierd black heels. If you are a shoe addict, which most of us girls are, then you probably buy a new pair each week, and forget about half of the shoes you already have scattered at the back of your wardrobe. Well, it’s time to dig them outand get a little creative. We love to stand out of the crowd and we can assure you that these will be one of a kind! Set up your work station as things could get messy! Lay out newspaper, and have fabric glue, multi-coloured craft pom poms, and shoes at the ready. Prepare your Poms! Lay them out in which ever order you think looks best, here we have gone for a completely random combination. Start with the middle and work your way out. Apply some fabric glue to the centre of the pom, and firmly press down on to the shoe strap. Don't worry about any excess glue, this dries clear is barely noticeable. Continue working from the centre gluing the poms on the shoe. Once the first shoe is complete go on to the next shoe, ensuring each pom pom is stuck down securely. Leave both shoes to dry and wear!

Noah Review Darren Aronofsky 2014
Plot The world is corrupt, wicked and in decline, after the fall of paradise. Held in captivity by the descendant of the first murderer Tubal-cain (Winstone), Noah (Crowe) sees a vision from the creator. The world must be cleansed and all will be saved. Everybody knows the gist of the biblical Noah’s Ark story. For those who didn’t have the tale drummed in to them as a child, Noah, an honourable man builds an ark to save a pair of each species on earth after God summons a flood. Director Darren Aronofsky, translates the mythological tale in to an all absorbing start-to-finish, intuitive, ambitious and beautiful blockbuster epic. Also both challenging and inspiring it retells the harshness of the Old Testament and provokes it’s eco-message fallacy. Aronofsky delves deep in to the character of Russel Crowe, who is excellent as the titular faced with a conflict of family versus faith. The cast does an admiral job of selling the tale, with obvious high stakes, to the audience. However, we are also subtly enticed to rethink the way in which we treat the contemporary world: “Everything that was beautiful, everything that was good - we shattered” bewails Noah.
Ila, an orphan brilliantly played by Emma Watson, urges; “Help us do better this time” as the Creator’s flood descends on the planet. In short, Aaronofsky’s sixth film is not the Noah you know and is less Genesis than Revelation. Heartbreaking sacrifices are made on Noah’s behalf, leading to much conflict amongst his family, all whilst, the supposed Villain, Tubal-Cain is determined to land himself a place in the Ark. The casts performances are crucially relatable, and equally as absorbing. Noah is a gatherer in a world of hunters, living with his family in a world of glowing sunsets. The rest of the Earth however, is taken up by Villain Cain’s descendants and creates a world of sin and pollution. Once again, the plot speaks relatable attributes to the modern world that we live in. The creator sends messages to Noah in the form of dreams, or perhaps in our case nightmares. But he dreams of vast seas cleansing the world, which we soon find out is the plan in mind for the gritty reboot by the almighty Creator. The visual canvas is a masterpiece in scope but there is a slight failure to fully emphasise the scale of the situation which in reality, threatens the entire human race.
Like most action packed films, the climax falls in to the scene of a battle field, where Cain fights for his place on the ark, which we suppose, given the circumstances, any normal person would do to survive. What follows are the apocalyptic scenes when the water finally rises, and what’s left of human kind are abandoned. But bolder still, Noah and his family, drift across what’s left of the world. Although with slightly twitchy moments of Claustrophobia, the film commits to a total potent and compelling theme of abandonment. We are then left with Noah’s centrepiece, a striving reconstruction of the creation story, yet Noah has very little in common with the biblical tale. That said, Noah is visually epic, and thoughtfully and powerfully gripping. Ripe for post-viewing discussion, it leaves us asking questions about ourselves and the world around us, without coming across as a constructed piece of religious propaganda.
