THE MAP MAKERSʼ STUDIO

Woolloomoloo, Sydney

Dowling st Reid ave

Roof Plan

The map makers’ studio is designed to create a quiet retreat for studying, thinking, conversations and making maps in a densely populated suburb in Sydney’s CBD. The brief called for a plan made entirely of orthogonal geometry, instigated by an exploration of the spaces created, and strategies in connecting them together in Mies van der Rohe’s ‘Brick Country House’ plan. The ramp off Dowling street eases the transition from street to studio. Upon entering, it is through carefully placed solid walls that a directed fluid movement between spaces is generated without the need of doors. This enables a sense of wonder for what is around the corner. Glimpses of views to the outside act as an incentive to enter into a room with the final reward being a space where the outside is drawn in. Blurring the line of separation from inside to outside is used as a strategy to extend and connect with a larger, more natural space in rooms that seem small. The courtyard is of particular focus and importance, grounding the building with its’ large existing trees and centreing it as rooms spiral off.

BONDI APARTMENTS North Bondi, Sydney

Hiroaki Ohtani, Mini House, Kobe, Japan

I sought precedents from Japanese designs, observing how they creatively dealt with circulation space and the maximisation of rooms through the bare functional necessities.

Context Plan - vegetation heights, building heights, roof colour, traffic intensity, institutions/commecial buildings Suppose Design Office, House in Hidaki, Hidaki, Japan

North Bondi is a suburb increasing in desirability. The need to meet these demands requires homes to fit in a smaller footprint and thus a smarter, more efficient way of planning is a must. The brief required a disabled accessible cafe, parking, aswell as a disabled apartment whilst fitting into its’ context and conforming to the Australian Standards. The apartment design explores a flexible way of living that is made possible by built-in furniture that serve more than one function - this way, spaces are overlapped minimising unused space.

THE BATH HOUSE Woolloomoloo, Sydney

The Woolloomoloo bath house is designed to provide an escape from the fast paced life of Sydney. It is a place where one cleanses the mind through the physical act of cleansing and relaxing the body - a highly personal ritual usually done alone. As humans we occupy the ground leaving the areas above and below it as sanctuary spaces. This idea informs the two different sensuous experiences: First Floor Plan

Lower Floor - being embedded inside the earth, in a sea cave with pockets of varied height spaces to sit or lie down and contemplate as light illuminates from above leading users to the upper floor. Upper Floor - elevated above the ground, users are encouraged to direct their gaze to the sky, rather than the surrounding buildings. These spaces allows the user to be better in tune with what their physical body needs, regulating this by having choice in the spa with a temperature that best suits. Precedents and strategy influence was drawn from Louis Kahn’s Trenton Bath House. His idea on serve and served spaces acted as a spring board in the plan development, helping in understanding the movement between spas. Tadao Ando’s manipulation of light inspired the method in how an atmosphere was created that promoted centreing and self reflection.

The building stretches across the site, with contour 94 as a reference point due to its relative flatness and ease of passage on site - especially important for disabled access. It is around this contour that the main circulation street occurs with the serve spaces sit back in the site in support. This forms the back bone that anchors into the solidity of the granite stone, allowing served spaces to project off the contours towards the river in lightweight construction, whilst creating a sheltered second street underneath.

The placements of the spaces mimick the one’s naturally created in the site: - the rocks that come out to meet the other side of the river was a sunny public forum like space, informing the hall location along with the views down the river. - the south of the site was a large area. Dry, relatively even and quiet, away from active forum perfect for retreating to, and design wise perfect for a fair living space for those on site where all are included

THE NEIGHBOURHOOD Liverpool, Sydney +DENSIFY SOUTH SIDE

The neighbourhood street belongs to everyone living there. It’s everyone’s front yard. It was once a vibrant shared space where everyone knew everyone, kids played together and one could pass a friend much needed flour over the fence. This is where apartment living fails, it lacks in its’ ability to build a sense of community.

Liverpool is rapidly growing, with a discrepancy between the required number of rooms in a house to the number of people in a household resulting in ‘McMansions’.

EXISTING COMMERCIAL

The sense of community cultivated in semi-public spaces of a neighbourhood serves as a conceptual guide for this high density project tackling disconnectedness in apartment living and ‘McMansions’ by providing a comfortable space for varying sized households.

THE ROCKDALE MILKBAR Partner: Tiffany Liew

Rockdale, Sydney

The milk crate, rich with unintended use, serves as the conceptual building block for this project, allowing an understanding in program, material and schematic organisation. Milk crates are stronger when filled with stuff. Using the diagram of an upside-down milk crate, the proposal is founded on an independent skin, with internal volumes housing ‘structural’ program. This ‘endlessly adaptable’ internal mass supports the main social facilities accessible via a fluid ground floor, being the hall and milkbar. In Rockdale, milk crates are mainly used by shop owners, many of whom are recent migrants settled in Sydney. Our scheme aims to cater for cultural needs and provide opportunties for participation, partnering with the local St. George Migrant Resource Centre in order to ‘Build Community Spirit. Bring Cultures Together.’

MOTIVATION

I’m an architecture student studying Masters of Architecture at USYD armed with a strong sense of loyalty and enthusiam. Having been offered employment and since then working as an Architectural Assistant at BVN+Donovan Hill, I have gained insight into project management and programming and experience in documentation (both general and detailing), whilst maintaining initial design concepts. I have a keen interest in travelling, documenting my experiences of different places and cultures, and understanding the psychology of space and as a consequence, designing spaces that speak and move us.
