A TOUCH OF CHARLOTTE OLYMPIA
THE STRIP In The Forum Shops at Caesars, 702.895.7510; charlotteolympia.com Launched in London in 2008, every Charlotte Olympia collection is inspired by classic Hollywood glamour. With staples such as leopard prints, fan detailing and bright colors, a trained eye can distinguish any Charlotte Olympia shoe by the signature golden spiderweb on the sole. Here, founder Charlotte Olympia Dellal shares her insights. CLAIRE WIGGLESWORTH
How did you get started in design and fashion? I have always liked the element of dressing up and was surrounded by very glamorous women, my grandmothers and my mother, who certainly inspired my love of fashion. From a young age I used to watch black-and-white movies with my mother, and my love of old Hollywood glamour certainly encouraged me to become a designer. Did you always want to design shoes? I wanted to be a fashion designer from a very early age, but only decided to specialize in footwear during my foundation course at London College of Fashion. One of my tutors commented on my emphasis on accessories when I put outfits together and suggested I follow this path. I went on to do a BA at Cordwainers learning the craft of footwear. What’s the creative process when thinking of a new shoe design? I enjoy designing shoes that look beautiful both on and off the foot. One advantage I have being a female shoe designer is to be able to try on my shoes throughout the sampling process and feel what it’s like to wear them. Which of your creations have you been most proud of? I love my platforms called Bananas Is My Business, a tutti frutti design inspired by Carmen Miranda. They are a fun pair of shoes from one of my first collections.
