The Minim

al

Minimal designs are among one of the most significant designs in the 20th and early 21st century. The idea is penetrated into many different fields, including hardware designs, cars, films, games, web, visual designs, and fashion of today. It penetrated so many fields because it’s more of a principal than a visual style. Since it’s only a principal and direction of designing, designers outside of the field can also apply and improve their designs. They emphasize more on the influential and widespread. “Less is more.” Minimalist design is a design stripped down to only its essential elements, you remove the unnecessary elements, and keep only the essential ones. It is usually influenced by certain things that came before it. For example, in fashion, crop tops are seen as a 1990s revival. Pop singers such as Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera started to popularize crop tops for teeny boppers in the 1990s. The style have also once been made as a fashion statement for pregnant women, worn by certain members of the all-female musical groups All Saints and Spice Girls during their pregnancy. Different styles of crop tops are still continuously being developed and worn in contemporary fashion in a minimal way, such as the boxy crop top and the floaty crop top. Some people may see minimal fashion as boring. No prints, no colors, and no fun. However, minimal fashion gives people a simple look at first glance, but then a world of things to examine upon closer inspection. They are built with clever cuts and lovely constructions. They can be a simple design influenced by the shape of an architecture, like the cone dress. People can strike up a conversation with minimal fashion or designs easily.

boxy crop top

The design of boxy crop top is clean and simple with a very squarely cut and edge, it is considered in the circle of minimal style. Minimal style is somehow connected to feminism when this style conclude with more stability and tough edge, and feminism refer to stronger female power and status with revolution happened in America during 70s. If saying to describe a feminism in fashion and style, this sharp cut and edge on bottom line or sleeve cut definitely considers a sense of strong attitude and straightforward and create a clean and fresh feel in summer. I believe the code of minimal crop top would never gone off in the sight of people.

floaty crop top

The style consisted a romantic and feminine edge, designed with a gathered sleeves and voluminous silhouette. The oversized eyelet details and a double spaghetti strap feature have added a modern contemporary edge to the top. Shape of the garment is held by the lightweight cotton shirting. The same floaty feature is sometimes applied to dresses’ designs. The minimal floaty crop top is mainly constructed of cotton, in the color of white, black or light blue. The des ign appears mostly in designer’s brands instead of well-known high-end luxury brands.

cone dress

The cone dress is a key silhouette for the season. It was transformed from the A-line dress which moved forward into the more extreme shape shown in a cone dress. The cone dress can hence be seen as an extension of the A-line dress which was significant in the 1960s space age era. It is narrow at the neck, and the form juts out to create a defined yet minimalist feel. The large double detailed pockets gave the dress a military styling. Shape of the cone dress can also be compared with shapes of special architectures and of the ice-cream cones.

accessories

Minimalism is tricky on pairing up, clean and less pattern is always the gene, therefore accessories here become the pop up point to complete the outfit on minimal style. Circle is an infinity shape with no start up point and ending, the circle shape accessories create a sense of infinity and cycle, which gave a mysterious feel to minimal look.

influences The Minimal Movement The exuberant excesses of 80’s fashion gave rise to a nascent minimalist aesthetic in the ‘90s that would gain momentum throughout the decade, championed by iconic designers Jil Sander, Calvin Klein. The reduced palette and purist approach are once again influencing contemporary fashion. Reigning Designers Calvin Klein and Helmut Lang rose to prominence in United States , while abroad Jil Sander’s minimal fashion influenced the high-end labels, such as Prada and Miu Miu. Jil Sander’s return to her own label and famous designers like Alexander Wang and Phoebe Philo at Celine herald a return to minimalist fashion today. Icons from Kate Moss to Christy Turlington defined the era’s beauty ideal with an almost sweet, fresh-scrubbed appeal that surfaced in everything from Calvin Klein ads to the 90s editorial.

“Fashion is the only attempt to realize art in living forms and social intercourse.” British philosopher Francis Bacon. This is an age when newer is better. Technology, transportation, and pharmaceuticals are all striving to improve from the past. However, unlike all the other industries, fashion is introducing blatantly outdated apparel for young people to wear. Fashion is seen differently as a channel for a person to embody a story, or represent an era based on what he or she chooses to wear. Fashion has the power to control a part of one’s image. When you see a girl next to you sporting an embroidered chiffon dress as a hipster or poser, try consider the historical implications that the outfit holds. Vintage fashion is worn, either is a matter of celebrating one’s younger years, or it is to celebrate points of historical pride. Another reason for why vintage fashion is uprised, is the increasing interest for environmental sustainability. Instead of throwing old garments away, people would choose to reuse, recycle, and repair their used garments. Vintage garments can also be upcycled through changing the hemline or other features for a more contemporary look. Some vintage items with poor conditions may also be reused as part of a new garment. “Everything old is new again.”

tennis skirt

Traditional tennis looks are developed from the 1970s preppy style. This term preppy was derived from a subculture of upper class youth who were born into old money in the Northeastern United States. They typically attend the the family alma mater, typically one of the eight schools classified as “ivy league. The preppy consisted styles like the bean duck boots, and GItman oxford shirts. It emphasized on an old-school look which has been furthered by popular American fashion labels like Thom Browne, Band of Outsiders, J. Crew and Ralph Lauren. The tennis skirt consisted an asymmetric knife-pleated hem and bonded edge, they are sometimes matched with polo shirts, which are luxury knits in new performance yarns.

vintage lace

Lace have started in fashion for a long time. In the 17th century, lace collars, lace caps, lace shawls, and lacemakers were all over the place. Lace was used to decorate everything during the era. During fashion history, lace was widely worn by members of the royal family, including Queen Elizabeth I, Queen Victoria, Marie Antoinette, even for kings in their full body armour. Later, Dolce and Gabanna was noted for their incredible craftsmanship in lace-making. Prada, in their Fall Winter collection in 2008/2009, dedicated to the idea that lace should see a woman through life from birth to death. And on the most recent royal wedding, Kate Middleton’s wedding dress designed by Sarah Burton for Alexander McQueen has spawned a million imitations, as ordinary girls around the world would want to get married in lace, so to just be like a real princess.

exaggerated gold

Gold never corrodes. Hence, it became a symbol of immortality and power in ancient cultures. The first perception of gold is always related to money and power, which could empower a person’s ego. In this generation, people usually have strong stands and ego for living in a better universe. However, under the economic boom after 2007, everyone had the desire to show off but with limited spending. Gold started to come in trend for more decorative colour on more powerful outlook. It was also a way to adorn sharper on outfits. Gold is a way to power up own self and bring the atmosphere of dignity and precious.

influences Different historical events have influenced and changed the way that people dressed throughout time. Some classic styles in fashion never “go out of style”, they just experience minor changes to keep up with the trends. While some clothing items were considered as “fads”, which only were popular for a short season and then never worn again. Certain fashion trends may revive after a period of time. Fashion designers always take the history as part of their inspirations. They observe how people were dressed in history, and bring them into contemporary designs. Many designers such as Alexander McQueen, John Galliano, and Christian Louboutin took the past for inspiration. Fashion in history were always influenced by the tastes of particular groups of people or cliques, usually associated with their social status or cultural preferences. HIS-N-HE

RS

Fashion has always been dividing the male and female gender identity clearly. In traditional department stores, it is very much about categories, men’s floors and women’s floors. But in recent seasons, there have seen a rise in genderless collections. The category named agender has included products from a wide cross-section of the store’s buy, with very different price points and categories. “If everyone was a little bit of each sex, clothing did not have to proclaim one or the other as loudly.” During the culture wars, unisex clothing was the uniform of choice for soldiers. In the 1950s, there used to be a rigid gender stereotyping that existed in society. Unisex clothing was a reaction to the perplexing new roles imposed on men and women alike by World War II. In the 1960s and 1970s, unisex clothing was aspired to blur or cross gender lines. However, the unisex style clothing happened to deliver a masculine tilt ultimately at that time. Not until the 1980s that gender neutrality has led to a “stylistic whiplash” of more obviously gendered clothing for women and children. Though the unisex movement may have made women’s clothes more masculine, but it never made them unfeminine. Men’s and women’s lifestyles and interests are more similar today than they ever were. Clothes now appear to be uniform and neutral enough to look normal on either sex. Thus, brands are increasing their keen to reach male and female customers with the same message. Some fashion journalists even have pointed out that today’s clothes are much the same for each sex anyhow. Topics about gender and sexuality have turned controversial, particularly among the mainstream media, discussion and reconsideration about genderless fashion have hence been brought to the public’s awareness.

oversize denim

The oversized denim typified the season’s mood for oversized and relaxed silhouettes. Denim jackets, in general, has been continued gaining importance at both the street level and on the runways. Compared to statistics in 2015, the denim jackets showed an increase of 30% in the UK and 3% in the US, for the number of this product that arrived online between February 1 and March 31 2016. Styles of this category consisted of authentic stonewash, love-worn vintage finishes, and all-American blues. Influential brand Off-White interpreted the denim jacket with a deconstructed design, featuring skewed seaming, uneven hemlines and a bright yellow panel, which is the most significant update for this item. From the silhouette shown, the oversized denim has also been transformed into an obvious item for gender-neutral collections.

Classic menswear-inspired shirts are emerging for the season Spring Summer 2017. The item is responding to the verarching trend towards basics and classic shapes gaining a new lease of life. Classic shirts worked across smart and formalwear categories. The classic white and pinstripe shirts are appearing in relaxed boyfriend fits, worn unbuttoned and tucked in, or belted at the waist with soft handles and finer yarn counts to enhance the relaxed look. Some brands may provide the wrinkle-free options to drive desirability at higher price points, and deconstructed designs for newness. On the latest runways, elongated sleeves as a key shirting detail, and exaggerated wide shoulders appeared to take the shirt’s fashion appeal up a notch.

influences Part of the appeal of adult unisex fashion was the sexy contrast between the wearer and the clothes, which actually called attention to the male or female body. In 1966, Yves Saint Laurent introduced le smoking, a tuxedo for women. Halston made his name with the ubiquitous Ultrasuede shirtdress. As the genderless trend evolves, women do not just wear trousers, but also pea coats, dress shirts, and blazers. In today’s society, some female shoppers may borrow shirts from their boyfriends or wear the boyfriend-fit jeans. However, male shoppers seems to act a little slower in the field. According to Robbie Sinclair, women do appear to adopt unisex clothes faster because they are exposed to more fashion. But men have became more and more self-aware about how they look and dress in the past 10 years. Hence, Robbie foresee that there will be a change in the near future.

women p

ower

Although some developing countries are still fighting for women’s right, most developed countries have already attained gender equality. Women who live in contemporary urban areas are mainly as educated as male. Female world leaders are starting to turn into power in all over the world, countries like Germany, Liberia, Taiwan and maybe the United States in the future has elected female leaders. Women power is uprising. Women were once oppressed by corsets, it restricted their movements. Women were once not allowed to wear trousers, it was an attire which allowed them to be more comfortable for sporting and other activities. Fashion, in both cases, contributed significantly to the liberation of women. Coco Chanel made and popularised non-corseted dresses which allowed women to move freely, and Amelia earhart happened to wear trousers because it was ridiculous to fly a plane in a dress. Her act to be the first female pilot did not only helped popularized trousers among women, but also brought the notion that women could do anything. “The woman who can create her own job is the woman who will win fame and fortune. - Amelia Earhart

monochomatic

After a critical social environment in America during the 1920s, an unprecedented economic prosperity started. People dressed up luxuriously and colourfully, people would pursue a sense of fresh in colour, to express a modern and better life. The biggest impact of colour combination is by monochromatic pair up.This is now leading the main match with different textile and materials In additional for a more comfortable flow of streamlined and elegant, pastel monochromatic is the choice.

In this technological century, we do not ask for tradition but individuality, uniqueness and out of box ideas. When it comes to fashion and the 21st century, the silhouette of asymmetrical design is just a match of these requirements for surrealism. It gives awkward and non-traditional feels to dimensions. This trend will never stop when technology is still proceeding forward in the future.

Waistlines were associated with hemlines in history. When hemlines rose, usually waistlines would be lowered. Hemlines were adjusted according to the economy. During 1926-1928, hemlines were reported to be at their highest. But once the stock market crashed in 1929 and the Great Depression set in, hemlines returned to a more conservative length below the knee. The high-waisted trousers may not have a hemline for it. However, the high-waist design may be understood as a relation with the rising power of women, just like how the economy was associated with the hemline.

influences Fashion was highly influenced by music stars and movies during the time. Skirt length has once again came back to the long length or maxi style in today’s fashion trend. Women’s liberation has gone over a long and tortuous path before turning into today’s stage. Female celebrities in today’s society, such as Angelina Jolie and Emma Watson are proactive figures who stood out for defining women’s rights. “A girl should be two things: who and what she wants.” - Coco Chanel With the uprising power of individual women, they start to have their own financial abilities. Unlike in the past, women nowadays fight for their own career like men did. Jobs are no longer defined according to sexuality. Women can now enjoy fashion without being vilified for it. Some people may hold the viewpoint that fashion is superficial, sexist and oppressive. However, some others may think that if women refuse to participate in it because of this viewpoint, they may just be giving up their power to influence it. There are numerous of female fashion influencers in both history and contemporary, from Marie Antoinette, Coco Chanel, Audrey Hepburn, Princess Diana, and Madonna to Kate Moss, Michelle Obama and Kate Middleton.

Athleisu

re

Athleisure is a term which describes clothing which is appropriate for either athletic or leisure pursuits, or both. Fashion items that fall into this category can include designer leggings, cashmere sweaters, layering pieces, and fancy gym clothes. Designers and retailers are responding vigorously to the trend. Clothes that are described as “apres sport” or “gym-to-the-office” were then introduced continuously in market. People would wear their yoga pants anywhere. Luxury brands have also introduced their luxury version of leisure clothes. Juicy Couture’s velour tracksuits were one of the pioneers that took part in the trend. These luxury athleisure clothing may consist better tailoring and material behind them when compared to the T-shirts or sweaters that we used to buy. Other than that, they would be similar in shapes and styles. “Clothing is for a comfortably confident life.” - Lou & Grey Athleisure wear started to appear on designer runways in recent years, which was not a typical phenomenon in the past. Reasons for that may be the healthier lifestyles that people are embracing. They would demand more functionality from their wardrobes, and need everyday comfort, especially for people who tried to work fitness into their overtaxed schedule.

polo dress

The most representative feature of polo dress is their significant polo collar. Polo collar is a design element in polo shirts which were introduced in the 1800s, and used by British Soldiers to play the sports game named polo. The players felt uncomfortable with the shirts flapping while they galloped on the field during the game at first. Thus, they attached their collars to the shirts in order to stop them from flapping. The polo shirt design was then gradually evolved, and then to other designs with the polo-neck, such as polo dress. The polo-collar was once popular in the mid-1950s. The polo dress also took notes from the tennis dress, and added in new features such as a zip-through styling and rib detail on the collar. They consisted an iconic futuristic mod style from the 1960s. The plastic sunglasses was designed with metal plating. There are a lot different styles on the theme of metal plating and on the arms with portholes. Elvis Presley once adopted a variation of these types of glasses as his trademark during his Las Vegas era. The futuristic glasses on him cooperated well with the TCOB jewelry and jumpsuits with giant lapels which were not futuristic at all.

influences “With my dark sunglasses I can see the old world and the new world at the same time.” - Karl Lagerfeld Sportswear styles are similar to the athleisure styles. They rely heavily on the types of sports that is popular during the time period. For example, men’s sportswear during the mid-1930s to 1946 included items such as white straight-leg flannel trousers for tennis playing or the dark blue elastic-waisted cotton knickers for playing football. Nowadays, the athleisure style is mainly influenced by celebrities. Gigi Hadid, Rita Ora, Jennifer Lopez, and Gwen Stefani, to name just a few, have been spotted wearing athleisure style during their leisure time. According to Amanda Freeman, owner of the cult SLT studio, fitness wear did not have trends. It used to be all black. But now it is seasonal. There are much bigger placement patterns and color-blocking on the items. Looks in athleisure style were mainly developed from the past trends. They took sportswear that people wore in the past, and transform them into something which you can wear on the street, such as the Polo dress.

When Christian Dior was asked what is the key to good dressing. He answered, “There is no key! If there were it would be too easy, rich women could buy the key and all their fashion worries would be over! But simplicity, grooming and good taste - the three fundamentals of fashion - cannot be bought. But they can be learnt, by rich and poor alike. There are fashion items that never go out of style. There are fashion items which everyone owns at least one of it in their wardrobe. A timeless piece could be something that it will live happily in your closet eternally after purchase. However, classics also get updated all the time, people would search for timeless pieces that also feel fresh, or some people may fall in love all over again with the original. Timeless fashion, in general, fits everyone well. They are seen as comfortable and safe. However, fashion is very much about change. Trends are changing every season. Hence, timeless fashion could be seen as holding a contradictory aspect with fashion.

stripe

Stripe has been here in fashion industry for 150 years and continuing, it is the pattern made on every styles and every garments, it became the regular element to fashion designs. Plaid is one of the most ubiquitous patterns in modern fashion. From Alexander McQueen to Vivienne Westwood, from awkward tourists to celebrities, it is adored by the cross-hatched pattern and its simultaneously preppy and punk connotations. Origin from Scotland in the 1500s, plaid was a Celtic kilt or blanket which served as an outer layer to battle. This pattern shared sense of rebel and vogue with different mix and match to different styles, like punk or american.

black dress

It was told that the little black dress is a key item in every woman’s wardrobe. It is defined by its flattering fit, color and short hemline, ascribed to Coco Chanel. Its simplicity allows rooms for it to play with draping techniques, structure and fit, and embellishment or design flourishes. Fit is the key of this style. Design details would be the only element to make the dress special. The little black dress was introduced by Coco Chanel, but then Audrey Hepburn was the one who made the garment famous in the film Breakfast at Tiffany’s. It was then worn by many other iconic women in history, such as Sophia Loren, Jaqueline Kennedy, Madonna, Kate Moss, Princess Diana, and Angelina Jolie.

The buckle belt has remained in trend for the past few years. They are more of a functional item than a statement piece. Last season, it was evolved for winter in opulent, romantic, or kitsch directions. The frame buckle was dominant throughout history, it could either be covered in leather or made from polished or new plastic materials. It is used to accessorise tailored separates and fitted dresses. Other key trends for buckles that are emerging can be the classically decorative metal buckles, and buckles with texture. Some designers would experiment it with jacquard wovens and fur accents.

influences “Timeless is anything with a strong appeal of its own, a strong voice that breaks through the years passing or even centuries. - Richard Sorger A timeless piece may be something that is neutral, such as the plain white t-shirt. It can also be a trend that has a longer life cycle than other fashions, such as the blazer and trench coat. When an item is considered as timeless, they usually have survived for decades, overgone the fast-pace of fashion. Experts believed that timeless fashion designs have to be linked to a specific generation, a subculture, or a dominant archetype in society. For instance, the Converse All Stars were conceived for playing basketball, but then, when they were adopted by the punk movement, they turned into an iconic product. Similar to the Ray Ban Aviators, they were first introduced for medical use in the beginning. It helped protect people’s eyes from the sun. However, as rock stars started to use them for protection from the flashing cameras, people wanted to wear it because they wanted to look like rock stars. Some people perceive that as the feeling that certain product has always been there, it is impossible to conceive its end.

Insight Fashion is cyclical in nature. The concept of “newness” in fashion doesn’t refer to the premiere of a trend, but rather its revival. There are lots of factors that affect fashion: cultural trends, politics, celebrity influence. However, the most factor to influence the cycle of fashion is the state of the global economy. During tougher times, if you need new clothes, the focus is less on passing fads and more on classic, quality pieces worth the expenditure because they’ll last. Refer back to the “Hemline Theory” since 1920s. George Taylor, an economist noticed that women hemlines became shorter as a way for women to show off their silk stockings. This matter to the effect between economy and fashion because longer skirts allowed women to hide that they weren’t wearing and couldn’t afford stockings. In today’s contemporary fashion, hemlines theory and heels theory are no longer being referenced by the designers. Millennials customers can not afford luxury products, especially living in economic downturn period. It is not easy to invest large amount of money on luxury goods. Millennials like to change all the time. They want to look fresh and new all the time. They also want to stand out from the crowd. Because of that, the trends are mainly targeting late generation Y to early generation Z. Minimal, Throw-back, His n Hers, Women power, Athleisure, and Eternalism are the coming trends. These trends are not only trendy and stylish, they also relate to economic issues closely.Economic problems can definitely changed customers’ purchasing power. Therefore, these trends mainly giving suggestions on how to spend less to look trendy.
