Location: Golden Miles, Toronto, Canada Studio Type: 2rd Year Comprehensive - Paired Work Design Program: Natatorium Lattice a co-generational natatorium that uses the architectonic idea of a modular piece transformed through a 3-D grid at four different scales. This creates a visibly transformed lattice from its structure to envelope, with intersecting interior spatial volumes. The initial precedent is Kengo Kuma’s Yusuhara Wooden Bridge Museum, whose most striking feature are repeated wood beams that funnel the largest load to the centre column. Based on this idea, the first transformed scale is the site location. Locating the natatorium at the park’s centre bridges a circulation gap, making the facility a central node.

4

| THE LATTICE : THE GOLDEN MILES RECREATIONAL NATATORIUM

The plan organization adapts the next scale. The central main pool is flanked by supporting programs. Stereotomic and tectonic relationships enable the program weaving, where the earth pushes up/down different programs to merge the lattice. A juxtaposition results as a lightweight tectonic lattice supported by the heavy stereotomic earthwork. A modular structural and grid expression is the next transformed scale. The plan was developed on a 5mx5m grid, divided down or up. Following this grid is an exposed hybrid wood-steel space-frame. This roof structure connects all the spaces, with a dimension of 1.25m x1.25m x1.25m. Lastly, the lattice is continued on the interior to create decorative lighting and acoustic effects. The final division of the spaceframe system aligns with the building screen façade.

| KINDERGARTEN ON HURON ST.

My kindergarten aims to provide a learning environment for children through play and imagination. Through defined spatial qualities, it inspires children to occupy and utilize spaces differently. The classrooms are designed to be regularly shaped with limited windows to provide ample natural light, which promote concentration and focused learning. While the indoor play space is designed into a zigzag form, the irregularity of the space hence maximizes space for play and circulation. The cascading floor plates creates different pockets of activity zones that encourages social engagement, free flow circulation and areas for creativity. My wild card is the theatre that is public facing and is located at the northeast corner, visible to the public. During off hours of the kindergarten, the indoor play space is open for the public to access as mini-open theaters. In the urban context, the orientation of entrance of the kindergarten is an extension from the Robarts’ path across the street. The ground floor of the design is also freed up for park space for families and users of the site as a structure for play during off-hours.

CONCEPT | TIMELINE OF FORT MODIFICATION & HISTORIC REFERENCE Frankfurt green belt used to be its fort since 1572, when the population expanded outside of the wall, the fort was into a moat and later into todays green belt. The form of the entrance bridge is a continuation of the form of fort, creating a visual linkage between green belt and Frankfurt Am Main.

The proposal is inspired by the history of Frankfurt’s star-shaped fort in 1572 for defense. The points of these fort projections created lookouts of overseeing and defending around the inner city. As the city expanded rapidly in 1808, it was decided that the city no longer needed the city walls, thus replacing them with garden plots. It was not until 1991 that the Frankfurt government decided to set up laws to protect and regulate the greenbelt. The greenbelt not only acts as a buffer between the new town and historic area, but it also facilitates an underground rainwater collection system. Although the greenbelt is a very prominent feature of the city, its relationship with River Am Main is very weak especially when it is no longer a feature of isolation. Upon site visits, it is also noted that the ends/beginnings of the greenbelt are disconnected visually and physically from the river by traffic lanes. A visibly grand entrance linking the two entities was established in order to invite more Frankfurters and visitors to experience this interesting dialogue. When one approaches an access point to the lower river edge, there are often two impressions given off to its visitors - a preview of what is to expect or an interior that completely contrasts from the exterior. However, for this particular site, it is believed that a gradual transitional path is the most suitable approach to link the two distinct features. This transition can be seen as two competing forces that needs a common ground, through physical approach (circulation and typological differences) and materiality.

Location: Portlands, Toronto, Canada Studio Type: 2rd Year Superstudio - Group Work Design Program: Master Plan Techscape is a vision of the current undeveloped plot in the waterfront - Portlands. With the growing tech industry in Toronto, it is envisioned to be the new site for AI industries and tech giants to collaborate with the City to generate a new tech neighborhood. With the consideration of reviving existing rich natural landscape and habitats, the major constituents for the project will be Uber, TRCA, and Heritage Toronto. The collaboration of these constituents will result in a landscape driven master plan that both emphasize historical elements as well as the exciting innovation for the future.

18

| TECHSCAPE: VISION FOR TORONTO WATERFRONT

Due to a landscape-driven master planning, the original Toronto city grid will be reconfigured to prioritize landscape features, e.g. Don River Mouth and parks. The grid will be broken down into 100x100m grids (1min. walkable city blocks) as well as integrating transit and communication infrastructure into the street circulation, creating a high tech yet sustainable and walkable streetscape.

The proposal advocates for an alternative trading model that encourages direct transaction between artisans and their customers, and the revenue will aid building public amenities for the village

CONCEPT | Shared Extensions EXISTING SITE CONDITIONS

With the growing demand for mescal production, Agua del Espino will become one of the villages in Oaxaca that benefit from this economic growth. Currently, the business model only allows farmers to gain limited income through a reseller in regards to selling mescal, in which the monetary return is not proportional to the intense effort invested into the process of mescal. The proposal is advocating for an alternative business method that allows direct exchange of agricultural produce, mescal and artisan work from Agua del Espino to its customers. The visitor center is envisioned to become the new exchange hub between customers, local farmers and artisans for goods and services. Through the idea of “shared extensions, these pavilions will each provide a space that is usable by both public and private users at different times of the day. By studying the pattern of growth within the town, it is noticed that villagers build incrementally along the given property line or existing landscapes. A courtyard space is formed naturally through this format of growth hence becomes the main social gathering space. However, when private properties abut public spaces, i.e. the town square, the supposedly public square became a spatially leftover space with no specific ownership. Therefore, the project proposed that the surrounding private property owners would extend a program that is both usable by private owner and public, and hence create a public space or amenity that is both managed and usable at all times.

Most of the land in Auga del Espino is divided by private landowners, 90% of land consists farmlands and private homes. Owners usually arrange their buildings along the property line, creating a natural courtyard space in the middle.

?

Due to the lack of public properties, they are usually leftover spaces. The lack of consideration for public amenities in the town square inspires this project to propose a new typology of generating and managing public spaces.

Haven reimagines the Haitian ‘Lakou’ courtyard housing as a vibrant kindergarten. It features a circular plan, collapsible walls, and a striking bamboo structure whose tensile strength makes it resistant to earthquakes. Its design creates a safe environment for children to learn. Anchoring the rooms is a central playground with an underground cistern. Woven bamboo partitions are used as collapsible walls, which open towards the center or to adjacent rooms. This creates an adaptable plan with numerous configurations, where children can freely play. Structure wise, the bamboo column is connected to a gabion foundation (acting as a base isolator to absorb seismic forces). Two permanent wall types are used within the bamboo frame: wattle and daub + gabion. The gabion walls are located on the west to protect from harsh winds, enclosing the building’s core. The landscape is a catalyst for environmental growth. The north features a food garden and bamboo grove for the kindergarten. Along the west is a tree grove for reforestation and a shelter belt to prevent stormwater runoff. A playground facing the multipurpose room connects the landscape to school. With its unique structure and courtyard, Haven encourages an educational approach of discovery through transformative planning and flourishing landscape.

The idea of the installation was to accentuate the tactility of furnitures displayed and sold from this company. Using a MDF skeletal structure coated with paper fins, with electric fans installed around the installation, creating an illusion of a living, breathing wall at the storefront. Drawing the pass-byer’s attention towards the installation as well as the furnitures displayed at the two oculuses. Through this project, a lot of prototyping was done before making a final design decision. During the design process, I am also exposed to an extensive variety of digital tools (e.g. grasshopper in Rhino modeling) and workshop experiences (e.g. access to tools to build prototypes).

Location: Hong Kong Professional Involvement Team Members (2): Stephanie Tung, Gigi Yip Organizer, Designer and Builder, Photographer The Social Dock is a self-initiated independent project, a design build proposal for a campaign that advocates for public space designs in Hong Kong. This event was organized and called for open proposals to be submitted regarding their long term goal in transforming one of Hong Kong’s busiest vehicle-only streets to a pedestrian zone. On Sept 25 2016, Des Voeux Road was closed for this event. Our installation encouraged a pause – a rest area - for the Hong Kong people, a community so used to the fast-paced lifestyle. The form of our project was inspired by geographical history of the street; Des Voeux Road was once the water edge of Hong Kong in the 1930s. While other coastal cities made good use of their water edges as recreational use, parks, promenades, Hong Kong has still been neglecting this significant feature and is planning to one day close up the harbor. We brought back the water elements to allow people to think of our water edge as more of a possible public space generator instead of something seemingly non-approachable. The form is also inspired by several water edge conditions found in Hong Kong, including stone mounts near beaches, extended concrete decks, etc. We were inspired to create a streetscape that wasn’t commonly seen in Hong Kong streets.

32

| THE SOCIAL DOCK

We collected wood pallets, which are a major construction component easily found anywhere in Hong Kong, given it is a common tool for delivering goods. It not only reminds people of the city of Hong Kong as a port/trading hub, but also the allegory of the harbor.

Revery Architects (formerly known as Bing Thom Architects) June 2016 - June 2017 Location: Hong Kong Projects Involved: 1) University of Chicago Center in Hong Kong ,Mount Davis (CA Phase) 2) Haw Par Music Farm Building Type: Institutional During my employment at Revery Architecture (formerly known as Bing Thom Architects) Hong Kong, I was involved in two major projects University of Chicago Booth (Hong Kong) and Haw Par Music Farm. The university was a new addition on a terrain landscape above a Class 3 Heritage Site. I was majorly involved in the Construction and Administration phase of the UCCHK project, where I was in charged with updating and tender/ construction documents, visualization of design changes and the interpretation proposal of the heritage component in the project. Haw Par Music Farm was a heritage revitalization project from a existing mansion owned by Aw Boon Haw, the owner of Tiger Balm, a famous Chinese medicine company in Asia. The mansion was later donated by his wife to be the new site for a music school for nurturing young musicians. I was involved in visualization of design for renovation designs and coordinating with suppliers. The following are samples of works I have done throughout my employment at BTA in 2016-2017.

Kongats Architects May - Aug 2019 Location: Toronto Type: Work Building Type: Community Center Project Involved: Estonian Center (Schematic Design Phase) Estonian Center is a community center proposed over a condo development in downtown Toronto. The building celebrates its origins through its outline of the building facade that reflects the boarder line of Estonia. With exploring triple glazed miter jointed glass walls, the building creates a panoramic view from the theatre level. The building also explores new materials such as aluminum foam panels.
