BITS AND PIECES
Blue Tongue Bonanza
The Blue-Tongued Lizard population at Bonorong skyrocketed recently thanks to the rescue and rehabilitation of Nala, aka The Botched Blue-Tongue, who then unexpectedly gave birth to 10 babies at Bonorong whilst recovering from a serious run in with a lawn mower. Bonorong have educated us, saying: “female bluetongues give birth three to five months after mating and give birth to live young (rather than laying eggs). The babies develop in their mother’s oviduct with a placenta, which is as well developed as that of any mammal. The babies eat the placenta at birth and are ready to look after themselves straight away.” Nala’s wounds have healed and she is now in care with some experienced reptile carers,
