Black grain Silo Stephan P. van der Wel | Introduction

What is the relation between dance and architecture? At first glance the relation is not clear. Combining a form of expression like dance with architecture is the reason to start this master project.

2

The expression of emotion is the common denominator between dance and architecture. In architecture this reveals itself in the typical styles that show thoughts, wealth and feelings of a certain period. This chapter deals with the black grain silo and modern ballet. The first part is the analysis of the dance. What is the relation between dancers and their environment? The last part deals with the design of the grain silo in Deventer.

Modern Ballet | The dance is performed by a dancing couple from Korea

and is situated in the city of Seoul. This performance has a number of classical elements, e.g. dancing on the tips of the toes. Originally it is a commercial for Levi’s. The female dancer challenges the male dancer to participate in the dancing. The female dancer uses the expression of her body to persuade her male companion. The dance is divided into 6 scenes or locations. The locations are, for example, the railway station, street, roof and a bridge. Transitions between scenes are not abrupt. The camera captures the moving couple and is moved horizontally and vertically. The dance is shown to us from different perspectives. Subtle details are mixed with overview shots, which keep the dance interesting.

Black grain Silo Deventer | The old grain silo is located in the harbor

of Deventer and is built in 1924. It is a remarkable building through its appearance. On top of that, it is partially hanging over the water. It is the first one in his kind that is built using a ‘glijbekisting’ to construct the monolith of the silo. Originally it has two typical side wings which are used as salt-storage, horses stable, storage and offices.

6

My own design is started by analyzing the building in its surroundings. This is done in order to create a match between the building and its surroundings. Two functions are combined in the new building of the grains silo. The first floor will be occupied by a grand cafĂŠ and the rest of the building contains Lofts (Living on factory terrain). The structure of the silos is visible from each

floor. In the exterior of the building a clear distinction is made between the old and the new part of the building. This is done by separating the old and new part physically. The connection between the two parts is made from transparent material. The front of the building contains the entrance for the grand café and the Lofts. The entrance to the Lofts is deliberately placed higher to create an imaginary threshold. To get a nice view on the harbor a large part of the terrace is placed over the water. Large windows are placed in the floors above, for light in the apartments and for optimal view on the Ijssel. The other side of the building contains less windows. Behind the walls on this side the hallways and bedrooms are placed. The appearance of the new building points to the ‘old’ grain silo. The new part follows the dimensions of the old part. The roof over the new part has Rechtergevel exactly the same shape as the roof on top of the old silo. The lofts situated just underneath the roof are expanded by making part of the roof flat. Conclusion: a characteristic grains silo from 1924 ready for its new purpose.
