NEWS YOU NEED TO KNOW

HIJABIS PROVING MODESTY IS ANYTHING BUT BORING WITH MAKE-UP MASTERPIECES Unfamiliar with the hijab? It can be a misunderstood garment. Many see this veil as an oppressive item, but wearing hijab is a choice. The Muslim women who wear them (known as hijabi) do so as a symbol of their modesty and morality. But one thing that isn’t modest about these women is their makeup skills. BEAUTIFUL!

SEPHORA LAUNCHES MOTIVATIONAL MAKEUP BAGS We love an inspirational life quote on Instagram to brighten our day, so seeing these goodies in Sephora made us ecstatic! ‘Breakups to Makeup’ was created in 2013 by makeup artist Angelique Velez as a way to mix motivation and makeup. All the products are printed with kitschy phrases such as, “I’m only helpless when my nails are drying.” And you can expect it on everything from beanie caps to iPhone cases.

Beautiful landscapes, stunning beaches, outstanding restaurants, and an attitude that creates happiness, togetherness and fun times. Of course, we’re talking about Ibiza. Gorgeous bikini bodies at the beach, and images of Zoo Project fanatics getting dolled up will soon be filling our news feed. But where is that glittering body-art from? Top-secret. But we know it’s the work of Gemma Charters and Karen Nicholls of Kiss My Fairy – Ibiza’s number 1 body painting shop. Originally from the Midlands and Manchester, their first meeting in Ibiza would lead to a business adventure like no other. Falling in love with the island, the pair took over ‘the party capital of the world’ with glitter and glam. Make up genius, Karen got into make up after studying for 2 years and gaining a year’s job work experience. “I started in a theatre in Manchester but soon moved to London to work in theatre and film. My love for body painting started whilst working at the Royal Opera House. We regularly had to create mystical sea creatures or Greek gods because they love nude scenes in the opera! Ibiza is the perfect island for creativity and it seemed like a perfect opportunity to open a business that no one had done over here before.” In charge of promotions, Gemma tells MUA how the team all possess a makeup artistry qualification, or an art based qualification - plus an extremely creative flair. Each year, applicants swarm to be part of the KMF team. People love fancy dress, especially island party-goers looking for that creative design to set them apart from the rest. Never shy to the odd celebrity, the KISS MY FAIRY team have glitzed up Lydia Bright, Josie Gibson, Chelsea Healey, Sam Faiers, Ferne McCann and some of the Eastenders cast. Featured on the popular TOWIE, the team created gold designs on Chloe Simms and Elliott Wright, whilst also on hand for glamorous make-up and hair for Danielle Locke, Jasmin Walia and Georgia Kousoulou. “Our team of artists are incredible talented. They have so many of their

8

own creative ideas, but every day we are drawing inspiration from anything around us including elements of Ibiza, current trends, listening to people on what they want and also sourcing other elements that we can add to our designs to make them completely unique to us - for instance our glitter. It is the thing we get asked the most – where do you get your glitter from? And our response – It’s our own creation and Top Secret information that only Karen and I know!” It looks like everyone has fell under the spell of body art magic with trends coming and going as quick as the beachy-waves. Experimenting this winter with 3D features, KMF are looking at including gems, sequins, stickers, flowers and more to their collection of creative designs. Obviously in Ibiza - it’s hot hot, so the team use a variety of water based and greasepaint professional paints of the highest standard, including industry leaders, MAC. Topped off with a sprinkle of that bespoke glitter. “Body paint is something you can’t necessarily get away with back in the UK, so when they are on holiday in Ibiza they can indulge in something a little bit different. One of the things people have said they love about our designs is that they get stopped in the street and other holiday makers ask to have their photos taken with them. It’s like being a celeb for the day! And of course our designs make great profile pictures for social media accounts.” Busy creating new designs and training up aspiring artists this year, Kiss My Fairy look fired up and ready for this coming summer antics.

MUA ADVICE: For people wanting to get into the more theatrical side of makeup, the best thing to do is search for a course with an experienced makeup artist teacher. The more on the job knowledge they have, the more they can teach you. Get as much on the job experience as possible. You can only learn so much in a classroom. Practise, practise, practise all the time. Keep current with makeup trends and keep educating yourself all the time. Never stop learning.

LILLI KELLY THE 17 YEAR OLD WHO IS THROWING OUT THE RULE BOOK AND REINVENTING MAKEUP. LILLI TELLS MUA READERS ABOUT HER LEAP FROM A HOBBY TO CAREER IN THE CREATIVE WORLD.

Flames. Soot. Ash. A condemning scene at the home of a young makeup artist. But this would inspire her to create a scene that would awe her many adoring followers. Lilli Kelly is her own boss at the age of 17. Renting a chair at The Glamour Pit in Liverpool, she is a self-taught makeup artist that encompasses the ever evolving generation of the day. Boasting near 10,000 followers on Instagram, the MUA is known through word of mouth in the city and beyond those borders. Everyday practise honed Ms Kelly’s creative talents: watching tutorials, reading books and whole lot of blogs is her remedy for success. But to make that jump from hobby to career, she paid to do a short course, solely for the qualification. With each MUA travelling their own journey, Lilli believes courses can limit the creativity of aspiring artists: “I think there’s nothing you can’t teach yourself. Of course you can learn from other make-up artists, but I think relying completely on a college to learn isn’t the best. You have no room for your own creativity too grow, as most students are moulded too believe in only one way to do things. Everyone is different and has different styles - a college suppresses that. Also you learn something new all the time with makeup, there’s always new trends, techniques, products. You can never stop improving and growing that’s why I love it.” Before 2014, make-up was just a hobby for Lilli. Now, she’s hoping to travel the world for photo shoots, bag a place at fashion week and working her way up in

the industry. With inspiration coming from all angles: art, nature and life – it’s a wonder the young MUA has time in her day. After a house fire in January, she created a look that reflected her current situation: “Depending on how I’m feeling depends on the look I’ll do. I can just sit down and see where it takes me.” Social media can create a following never imagined a few years ago. With so many popular makeup artists posting images on Instagram and blogging their tutorials; people are motivated in makeup. “I wouldn’t have had the opportunities I have without social media. It gives you connections, allows people to see your work. I’ve met photographers, models, other make-up artists through it. I get a lot of clients from it, it’s amazing what can come from it. Seeing clients really happy and praise my work made me realise I could make it as a career, now I couldn’t imagine doing anything else, and only wish to get better at what I do.” We leave the soon to be 18 year old with well wishes and high hopes for the future. A story for any MUA reader to be inspired by. But before she flitted off we asked her for some last minute advice and tips…

K I T ESSENTIALS First of all, your kit should have the basics, and then build on that. I’d advise beginners too buy good palettes, because you’ll save some money. E.g. warm and cool eyeshadow palettes from MAC, £65 for 15 eyeshadows, usually £150 if you buy each eyeshadow separate. Bobbi brown universal palette, around £180 but contains a wide variety of concealer and foundation, and all in one place. Anastasia Beverly Hills contour kit is amazing, only £40 and again it’s compact and all colours in one place. Also, get too know your kit and products, be comfortable and confident in what you’re using on your clients and know it’ll do the job you want it too!

FAVOURITE LOOK the bare minimum, fresh skin, glowing, youthful.

MUA ADVICE:

“My advice would be to first question why you want to make it into a profession. If it’s because you are genuinely passionate about it, and have the drive and motivation to put in the hours and hard work before you’re the best, then definitely go for it. Practise practise practise! Never ever be put off if something doesn’t go right - you’re not perfect, however learn how to fix those mistakes. Have confidence. Having confidence in your work will push you too try new things and take new opportunities. Don’t doubt yourself, however don’t think you’ll be a professional in a few weeks - it takes years! And a lot of hard work, but is definitely achievable if you have the right motives!” 13

The journey began when she was a little girl, playing with her mum’s makeup and trying her luck in school will a bit of glam – usually ending in a baby wipe to the face. Melanie Doyle is now opening her own academy and writing a book of her own MelVicMakeup Artistry. Not only applying makeup to celebrities from Coronation Street to Emmerdale, and Dancing Mums to Downton Abby as a freelance for Le Maq Pro, she works as a Beauty Editor for Lash Inc. reviewing products which is sold worldwide, online and in print. After studying art, photography and pottery in school, she went on to college for beauty therapy where the passion grew. Studying for two years lead to a job in a salon offering makeup services, and the decision of a career in makeup was made. Teaching for 14 years, she was trained by Paulo Getteli, a famous Italian makeup artist with exceptional skills and enthusiasm for makeup. “Paulo really embraced his work and wanted to teach all he knew to his students, which is pretty much why I went into teaching. I loved the way it gave him such passion, and I wanted to be the same as him and share my new found skills once realising I was actually really

good at the creative style in high fashion makeup.” Melanie’s decision to open her own academy was spurred by her love of teaching, but the dislike of FE colleges, which she feels provide poor standards of teaching from other lecturers. So in February 2015, she signed the lease for her own academy. With top of the range equipment in a building with a bistro, art gallery and other businesses - the Bank Quay House at Warrington Town Centre in Cheshire is where Melanie comes into her own. “It’s very exciting times. I’ve already had lots of interest from students wanting to pay and book onto courses already. My main selling point at the academy is the up to date courses, with inspiring lessons in a state of the art makeup room with modern equipment, plus opportunities to do work experience with myself. I also have a photographic area in the academy, which is a unique selling point, as all students will have an opportunities to take photographs of their work throughout the course, with some students having a shoot with a professional photographer with portfolio images that will be just perfect to add to their book!” Anything outside the box inspires the weird and

wonderful artistic projects from Melanie, with her main passion being body art. She says: “I like to day dream, and quite often crazy ideas spring to mind or I will use Pinterest to seek ideas, always using a variety of images on a mood board to help me create the theme I am hoping to achieve.” A job as a makeup artist can take you places never dreamed of with Melanie saying: “A job as a makeup artist is a very enjoyable career, you get lots of opportunities to work all over the country and even all over the world if you have the right accredited qualifications. A career in makeup can also be very lucrative warning up to £300 per day in TV and for TV commercials even more!” Short one day courses are available, plus teenage workshops on skincare and how to use your own makeup for those who want to learn basic tips and tricks. Media makeup, such as special effects and theatre, fashion, skincare, photographic makeup and full time programmes in level 2 and 3 media makeup are all setup at the MVM Academy. For more information on fully accredited VTCT courses with Melanie, visit www.melvicmakeup.com

makeup MUA ADVICE: My advice to new aspiring rience artists would be to get as much work expe learn to shadowing professional makeup artists and ring that makeup at a professional academy ensu before you check the credentials of the teachers ed handing over your cash. Only do accredit ols scho are courses such as VTCT, as some makeup they’re giving out their own certificates, however which d not insurable and are not recognise ire requ means you’ll not get the big jobs as they . you to have your professional qualifications KIT ESSENTIALS: My kit essentia ls are excellent skincare such as my Ark Skincar e as it is a must to prepare the skin correctly with excellent products that really prepare the skin for makeup. Other items would be eyelash curlers, a good set of brushes such as Sigma or Cro wn and Le Maq Pro makeup mixer, which is a rea lly versatile product that can be used with foundations to create different textures and sha dow based products to create waterproo f eyeliners.

BUDGET VS. BLOWOUT ! T U O T IT

POU

Dilemma of the day. Should we be paying out the blowout prices for make up? The old saying – you buy cheap, you buy twice. Is that the case anymore, with so many budget cosmetics on offer, surely they’ve cracked the industry with low cost solutions. MUA had a tester trial of the some of the leading lipsticks on the market. For powerful impact on the pout, the blowout MAC won the race. With a vibrant and noticeable colour change. For moisture on the lips however, MAC fell short and was speedily over taken by the cheapest of the lot – the budget Natural Collection which kept the lips feeling fresh all day with a shimmery tone. For an overall appeal that offered both, but for perhaps not as long, was the Rimmel London Kate Moss edition, which puckered those lips with a conditioning feel. MUA’s DECISION: the colour choice gets better as the price begins to steepen, which would appeal to clients as a makeup artist, but the cheaper alternatives are perfect for day to day use to add to your make up kit. Pout it out!

NATURAL COLLECTION £1.99 MAC £15.50 SEVENTEEN STAY POUT £4.49 RIMMEL LONDON KATE £5.49 BARRY M £4.49
