I bought this Current Commodity x Margie 542 mating as a set of embryos from Dave and Josh with the plan of getting a Heifer Pregnancy to headline the Revival Sale. Mission Accomplished!

Full siblings to this December-heifer-on-the-way have been out of this world! Along with the full sisters who swept the Ohio State Fair, Kolten showed a really good full brother to the top of his class in the Bred & Owned Show at 2023 NJSS. They call him GCC Current Agenda and I’m fairly sure this young prospect will be on Greenhorn Cattle Company’s promotional agenda in the future. People always ask how they can get ahead in the Shorthorn breed. Heifer Pregnancies are a direct and quick route to progress! The risky business of ET is done for you. The recipient is well on her way to putting a heifer calf on the ground that is endowed with breed-leading genetics and will be named with YOUR PREFIX. You can put her in your show barn or raise her to graze the front pasture. You can take her to a sale and take the $$$ to the bank. Ok, so there’s a little more to it than this but you get the idea! If Shorthorn Success is your ambition, Lot 2 should be at the top of your to-do list!

The Full Sisters to Lot 2 swept the Ohio State Fair!

LOT 3

Every once in a while, a heifer comes along that absolutely stands out from the rest of the calf crop.

An “outstanding” animal that proves you are on the right track, that makes your hours of effort, endless dollars of investment – and, yes, blood, sweat and tears – all worthwhile.

Little Cedar Marvelous Margie WW 2319 is THAT heifer!

Probably the deepest female in the offering, 2319 balances up flawlessly, her hip is excellent, her sound movement is ideal – the way all cattle should move.

Just so you know, there will not be many of these Marvelous Margie heifers offered.

I suppose you could skip over to Lot 3A and invest in the Marvelous Margie 96 Made To Order embryos. You could choose Worldwide and make a full sister. Or, choose Red Knight or Lookout and create a maternal sister. Yeah, you could do that...IF you don’t get this extraordinary heifer bought.

Jump in quick to let Kevin know you’re serious, and answer every time he asks! (He likes you better when you do that.)

Mahvelous!

• Buyer will choose one of three sires. Little Cedar Cattle Co. will create four heifer embryos at GGS Genetics/Bovateq in November, 2023.

Mating purebred cattle is not a “one-size-fits-all” proposition. We all have unique preferences and a personal rationale why we think specific Sire x Dam relationships will work.

Tailor-made is the wave of the future in the world of high-end online fashion marketing. This “Marvelous To Order“ embryo package works the same way. Offering four heifer embryos from Marvelous Margie that we will create in November to your specs. Choose embryos sired by Worldwide, Red Knight or Lookout. We offered this in The Summit at 2021 Cattlemen’s Congress and Tim Noll invested $2,000 per embryo. In the Revival Sale last year, Justin German bid $2,500 per embryo to get them bought. The Lot 3 heifer validates their vision!

Lot 4 is your ONLY opportunity to purchase embryo production of BFS Margie LL 950 this year!

BFS Margie LL 950 was the crowd favorite at Louisville and Oklahoma City, and was named Reserve Grand Champion at the 2021 Cattlemen’s Congress. She was Division or Reserve Division Champion, under seven different judges, at all three major shows (Kansas City, NAILE and Cattlemen’s Congress) both Junior and Open Shows, as well as the National Junior Shorthorn Show.

This former show heifer has made an even more impressive cow and she has hit it out of the park with whatever sire she has been mated to. She is the mother of Direct Deposit who was Reserve Grand Champion at OKC in 2023 and will be the bull to beat this show season. Her very first daughter by Flash was named Reserve Grand Champion Bred & Owned Heifer at the 2023 National Junior Shorthorn Show. The Tribute calves have been all the talk, so this mating is cutting edge and BIG TIME! You can only acquire this opportunity at the Great Shorthorn Revival!

Margie FS 201 is an extremely good, roan, heavy muscled, and structurally correct daughter of the very popular Hill Haven Fire Storm! Her full sister was the highest-selling heifer of our Spring online sale. This branch of the Margie cow family has had so many accomplishments already, but they are just getting started. Much economic success can be attained in the Revival Sale is when you line up power cows on both sides of the pedigree. Anybody who has seen the very impressive Breathtaker cow , dam of Fire Storm, will jump in here! (See pages 26-27.) Lot 5A is safe to heifer semen from the homozygous polled JSF Dow Jones. He is an extremely popular, easy calving, top 1% $BMI sire. This mating will be “money!”

REVIVAL DOCUMENTATION OF TERMS • For lots in which future fulfillment is a factor (ie. retained rights and retained percentage ownership), the Revival prepares a document that outlines the original sale terms and is retained on file in case of a dispute.

REVIVAL EMBRYO PACKAGE TERMS • If implanted by a certified embryologist, all embryo lots are guaranteed to produce at least one pregnancy, or one replacement embryo will be provided. Embryos must be implanted, and replacement claim made, within a calendar year from purchase date. Complete settlement must be made in order for embryos to be released. Shipping arrangements and costs are the responsibility of the buyer.

Buyer must contact the consignor directly within 30 days of the sale to make embryo shipping arrangements. Consignors cannot be expected to store embryos for you longer than 30 days unless you have personally made arrangements with them to do so.

RETAINED FLUSH RIGHTS

• Sellers who have retained the right to flush a specific female are responsible for all expenses and the coordination of services (timing and location) at the buyer’s convenience. It is not unusual to conduct multiple ET sessions (conventional or IVF) to achieve the minimum quantity of embryos desired.

DNA GENOTYPING & GENETIC TESTING • A DNA genotype is utilized in establishing parentage, determining the presence of a genetic condition, and to produce genomically enhanced EPDs (GE-EPDs). Animals do not have to be DNA genotyped, or free of a genetic condition, to be registered. However, if an animal becomes an A.I. sire or donor dam all required genetic testing must be completed and a DNA record must be on file with ASA prior to registering any progeny. Buyers are urged to consult the association website for the most up-to-date test results for all genetic conditions.

Making a purchase in the Great Shorthorn Revival creates the eligibility to consign to future sales. Contact Steve French to discuss potential lots!

A LOOK BACK AT THE ORIGIN OF OUR SALE THEME

“The Great Shorthorn Revival” is an article written in 1965 by Dave Lorenz, a Missouri Shorthorn breeder, for the 50th Anniversary issue of Shorthorn World. That’s a long time ago, but Dave’s words are even more meaningful today.

We were inspired to create The Great Shorthorn Revival in 2001 on a sale weekend trip with Clint Tomson, age 92 at that time. Clint was a Shorthorn man from birth, an international show judge, salesman extraordinaire, and he served as Executive Secretary of American Shorthorn Association from 1941 to 1951. He left the association to join his boyhood Shorthorn friend Frank Harding, and Frank’s father F.W. Harding, in forming American Live Stock Insurance Co., but Clint never left behind his love for the breed he helped make great.

Steve kicked off two days of discussion with a great question that had perplexed him for some time, “Clint, how are we going to get Shorthorn breeders to focus again on the cow families that made the breed great?”

Without hesitation, Clint held forth with a marketing lesson like none we’d ever had. He started with, “Steve, you’re going to have to create an ECONOMIC OPPORTUNITY. You can’t just tell people the cow families are important. You have to show them! And show them right in their pocketbook, where it counts the most!”

Presenting the greatest variety of desirable, marketable genetics from proven cow families on the Shorthorn scene today.

A wide range of Shorthorn investment options that will improve your herd, and increase in value.

An opportunity to see the results of cutting edge genetics to help make future mating decisions.

A networking event to create profitable connections with leading breeders and marketing agents.

A fun, memorable learning experience, with good cattle and good people, that you and your family will enjoy!

Connect with us to see SALE VIDEOS and register for the SALE BROADCAST

It is our privilege to celebrate this 22nd Anniversary sale, and we will be honored for you to join us on-site or online!

Now, “What’s this Shorthorn Revival Business?” A big portion of an entire generation of commercial cow men has grown old without ever seeing much but white-faced cattle. Our friend in West Texas said he hadn’t seen a herd of registered Shorthorn cattle since he last visited Sni-A-Bar at Kansas City in 1940! 25 years ago!

When the cow business is good, ranchers buy more bulls than when business isn’t good. They are looking for bulls that will solve their problems. They also have to get their cows pregnant. But, if they can’t find bulls that will solve their problems, they will have no choice but to take the best bulls available. Unfortunately for the Shorthorn breed, I don’t think we have enough bulls available to get one extra thousand Shorthorn bulls into this great, open market for replacement bulls.

The Charolais people are trying. The black Angus people are trying. The red Angus people are trying. The Santa Gertrudis, Brangus, Beefmaster people are trying. We, at Kansas City are trying too! We’ve been building the strength of our herd from within. We’ve been adding the strong bulls and outstanding females we believe will help us. Sound feet and legs are an absolute must. We believe we must breed the kind of strength and quality into our Shorthorns...that you should breed into your Shorthorns...to make bulls and their calves strong enough to be preferred by ranchers, and commercial cattlemen and take some bull business away from these other breeds.

You can do this too. If you aren’t already breeding the strong kind of Shorthorns with strong bone and sound feet and legs that will produce bulls that will be preferred by commercial cattle people...don’t let the Great Shorthorn Revival pass you by. The Great Shorthorn Revival is here. But, everybody has to do his part if we are going to get the business away from these other breeds. They’re just not going to drop dead because our breed awakens to this great need. The present commercial cow men...those with 200 or more cows...will be the calf producers to supply the calves to be finished mostly by others. As world finished beef demand starts to exceed United States calf production, our American calf producers will have already discovered that they can more profitably sell heavier calves at weaning time than in recent years. They can get heavier calves in only two ways: 1. They can creep-feed high cost grain. 2. They can infuse Shorthorn blood, and get it FREE! The need for strong Shorthorn bulls is 100 times greater than your and our capacity to produce at this time.

Opportunity is where the NEED is...and because the need is great, the opportunity is great! Don’t let the Great Shorthorn Revival pass you by! Start today! If you need a new bull, travel farther, look harder, pay more. But insist on the bull you need. Don’t settle for a substitute for a good bull. Pick up the big, strong females you occasionally have the opportunity to buy. The kind that will produce a calf every year, and give enough milk to make a job of the calf. Start today to build up the strength of your herd. Competition demands that all of us Shorthorn people produce bulls that will sire bull calves strong enough to be preferred by commercial cattlemen all over America! Don’t let the Great Shorthorn Revival pass you by!

Lot 11A is a unique way to combine the Picture Perfect and Margie/Lady Crystal cow families and should result in a gorgeous roan female. This is the only time that Worldwide has been used on 434P and this is the only pregnancy that has been made so far – one of a kind! Could be a money tree for her owner!

LOT 11B

Lot 11B is truly a mating of two breed legends. If you paid attention to how the Red Knights performed at NJSS then you will be intrigued by this top-end mating. The 434P clones are getting older and this is perhaps one of the last chances to get a purebred daughter out of such a dominant female. This heifer pregnancy is due shortly after the sale so you’ll enjoy a quick return on this investment!

Lot 12 is the first Lady Crystal 2105 daughter to sell, and she is sired by CF Payweight to boot! Don’t miss this female if you’re looking for both a show ring and breeding pen prospect. (That’s what we all want, eh?)

Note that the heifer embryos that produced Lady Crystal 37L were purchased from the 2022 Springtime Revival. When you hear it said that Revival embryo packages are the fast track to becoming a Revival consignor, keep this fancy, white heifer in your mind’s eye. This has been a fun project for a longtime Shorthorn breeder!

LOT 12
NJSS Division X Champion Cow Calf Pair with her Worldwide bull calf, Armstrong Defender 2302, at side

Lady Crystal 2105 has done EVERYTHING we’ve asked her to do – and then some!

Lady Crystal 2105 sold in the 2021 Great Shorthorn Revival as a heifer calf and was one of the top-selling females. She went on to win her division in the 2021 NAILE Open Show. After several competitive outings as a big bred heifer, she won her class within a very competitive division at 2022 NAILE.

Next, Lady Crystal 2105 produced an outstanding bull calf who teamed up with her to capture the Division X Champion Cow Calf Pair honors at the 2023 National Junior Show.

Along the way, we were very aggressive in our embryo recovery with this great young female – and we were successful! We are very proud to offer three exciting matings of 2015: Dream Maker, Red Knight and Direct Deposit, the new young sire who was Reserve Grand Champion at OKC. After showing 2105 extensively, and calving her while starting her IVF career, we still managed to get her back in calf and ready to go again for 2024. This great young female is on the brink of greatness!

I feel that, phenotypically, Lady Crystal 2105 is as close to 434P as any of the great 434P offspring have ever been. This is a tremendous opportunity to get in on the front end of the production of this phenomenal female.

Mark my words, Lady Crystal 2105 will be a contributor to the breed for a long, long while. You’ll be glad to own her first offspring, and happier still to count the money you make from these three trailblazing matings!

From the day Lookout sold in the 2021 Revival we knew he was going to make a splash in the breed. Last fall, he made history winning the title of Supreme Champion Shorthorn on the green chips in Louisville. Though that day is one we will not forget soon, his impact on the breed is just beginning. We, at Vaughn Farms, are humbled and excited to offer the very first Lookout heifer to be sold at public auction. Royal Ruby 304 is elegant and long-fronted, she is great in her angles and packed with muscle. Lot 18B has all the traits to win shows and become a big time donor.

Breathtaker Sky 35G is an awesome 35Y daughter by the great female sire, Aviator! She was Junior Calf Champion at the Agribition and since then has been a great producer for Hill Haven and Hawken Shorthorns. At age four, she has wonderful body condition, living just on pasture as you can see in her picture. Sky is huge-boned and big bodied with a extended front end. She is destined to make amazing show females. Sky 35G will be an awesome contributor to an “A-List” breeding program. We’ve left her open so she can make her mark in the donor pen right away. Breathtaker Ann 18L is a full sister to Breathtaker Tia 19J who was a high seller at $38,000 in the 2021 Revival Sale.

It’s hard to improve on Tia but we think Ann has managed to do just that, with a little more bone, foot size and dimension. We can’t wait to see this female on the green shavings with her new owner.

Versatility in mating is a trait we consider to be one of the most important for a donor female to be able to stand the test of time.

With that in mind, these Breathtaker x Worldwide heifer embryos will surely result in another home run!

We have a heifer calf of this mating this year that we are beyond excited about. Take advantage of an extremely rare opportunity to not only acquire Breathtaker 35Y embryos, but female embryos at that!

The mating of Worldwide x Celine 3130 produced TWO high-powered show heifers with donor potential!

Celine 3130 needs no introduction. She has become one of our lead donors known for producing bull power, but now we have found a mating in Worldwide that has produced two high-powered females 2318 and 2315! If you ask me or any of our three sons, on any given day, you will get different answers who is the best of the two! Truthfully, I’m just not sure. And I ‘ve been doing this long enough to know that I cannot tell you who will be the better producer. I will say they are both tremendous show heifer prospects and both have obvious donor potential.

The May heifer, Celine 2318, reminds me so much of her mother when we showed her nine years ago – the design in her lines and her engaging presence will set her apart in the ring. The April heifer, Celine 2315, has that amazing eye-catching show look that will make her very competitive at any level. Can you imagine how great these two will look at next year’s National Junior Shorthorn Show in Maryland? We can’t wait to watch these heifers develop and see them win!

“Opportunity is where the NEED is...and because the need is great, the opportunity is great!

If you need a new bull, travel farther, look harder, pay more. Insist on the bull you need. Don’t settle for a substitute for a good bull. Competition demands that Shorthorn people produce bulls that will sire bull calves strong enough to be preferred by commercial cattlemen all over America!

Don’t let the Great Shorthorn Revival pass you by!”

The Rose Mary’s Goose cow has done a great job for us over the years. Rose Mary 2317 is the first Long Look calf that she has produced, and she is IMPRESSIVE! I believe Lot 24 may be one of Rose Mary’s Goose’s best, and that’s up against several daughters that were NAILE division champions! This May heifer is deep, and she is sound. I’d say she’s probably the one that’s changed the most since we took pictures so study her in the videos and the display pens.

Stout and full of muscle! Those two words perfectly describe Cash Advance and his sire Current Commodity, a bull who is making an impact on the breed across varied lines of cattle.

SULL CURRENT COMMODITY 7630E

Sire of Lot 25

At the 2023 NJSS, many division winners were sired by Current Commodity. Two sons won their classes in the IMPRESSIVE Bred & Owned Bull Show, including Cash Advance shown by my granddaughter, Juliana Ritchie. (It’s my belief that a big part of our breed’s progress and expansion can be focused on the growth of junior bred & owned bulls. Let’s get behind this show and make sure our junior members who are investing and developing great Shorthorn bulls are rewarded and provided opportunities to succeed in the business.) On that note, Cash Advance showed and won, and he’ll do it again. Further, he has the genetic ability to transmit his stoutness and muscle to into “bull calves strong enough to be preferred by commercial cattlemen all over America.” Welcome to Beaverton, friends. This is what the Great Shorthorn Revival is all about!

This was supposed to be our Lillian x Ace of Diamonds to keep for our herd, but here she is. We sold her 3/4 sibling heifer at the Springtime Revival for $7,000. Her dam (pictured below) is in the top three cows in our herd presenting everything you want in a cow, sturdy feet, great udder, easy fleshing, width, larger barrel and rear. This bred heifer has it all too! She is stylish from head to tail with a build that follows her dam’s footsteps. Elegant on the move with a pedigree that has Red Reward, CYT Maxim and the Lillian cow family. You can’t lose!

Lillian 1930, the dam of Lot 31, is the cow that beef producers dream of: easy fleshing, depth of rib with a lot of power in her build, plus eye appeal that could hold up in any show ring. This idea for flushing the dam of Lot 31 to Lookout came about on a phone call between Steve and Joe after Steve saw the photos of 1930 and her daughter Lillian 2229. Both of them “see” an exciting future ahead for this great female and you will benefit from their vision!

Twenty-one years and four generations away from the “O.G.” Daphne and the saga continues to perform at the highest level. NBS Regal Daphne topped all sales at the 2023 Ohio Beef Expo and then won Division III in Des Moines at the 2023 National Junior Shorthorn Show for Kaden Gana. Her dam (aka: Syd’s Daphne) was also a class winner at NJSS during her memorable career on the tanbark. Here is your opportunity to own a full sib to Regal Daphne and put your prefix on the pedigree. And, more importantly, to become involved in one of the classic families of the breed, the legend we call “Daphne.”

BJSF SULL SWEET DREAMS 2934 – Full Sister to Lot 36 2023 National Junior Shorthorn Show Class Winner

The donor dam of Lots 36, 37A and 37B, stems from the long, long line of Dream Ladies, one of the most dominant families in the Shorthorn breed. Her full sisters finished in the Top 5 at the National Junior Shorthorn Shows of 2016, 2018, 2019 and 2020. As a heifer calf, Sweet Dreams 9134G was Grand Champion of the 2020 National Western Junior Show and later that year was selected 2020 NJSS Reserve Grand Champion.

In June, Kolten Greenhorn showed the daughter of Sweet Dreams 9134G by Red Knight (a full sister to Lot 36, pictured above) to the top of her class at the 2023 National Junior Shorthorn Show.

Sweet Dreams 9134G is a full sister to SULL Dream On 5158 ET, the dam of SULL Dream Maker, who was syndicated for $70,000. That relationship makes the Lot 36 mating of Red Knight to 9134G an economic opportunity worthy of serious consideration. Now is the right time , The Revival is the right place, and Lot 36 is the right lot to make an investment in your Shorthorn breeding program!

Added foot size and bone combined with structural correctness and extra body mass make Sweet Dreams 9134G a powerful force in the future of the Dream Lady line, and the Shorthorn breed. Obtaining Current Commodity or Worldwide offspring from Sweet Dreams 9134G will extend your breeding program into the ranks of the nation’s most competitive herds.

Lots 38A and 38B are two very elite matings of Gentry, the two-time All American, who won her division twice (as a calf and as a big heifer) at both Louisville and Denver, and was NAILE Reserve Grand Champion of both the Junior Show and the Open Show. What’s more, she was the 2014 Show Female of the Year for both the Junior and Open divisions!

Current Commodity came out of Junior Nationals in Iowa as probably the “hottest” sire at the show. (Can it get any hotter than the Iowa State Fairgrounds?) A Gentry x Long Look heifer calf (created from an embryo purchase) sold last fall for $26,000 and we’re hearing they have another one even better this year, so we know the Long Look mating will be BIG Time! Most likely these will be the last embryos to sell on Gentry, only available at (you guessed it!) The Revival.

This August yearling has always been a favorite at Armstrong Farms, but I guess it wasn’t until she walked out the winner of her class at NJSS that Steve and I got our heads together and decided she needs to be a feature of The Revival. Both Steve and I had breeders come up to us and compliment her unique style, not only in terms of her look and eye appeal, but also the sheer power and dimension that she possesses. Felecia 2279 is a turnkey opportunity for donor stardom! We would like to continue to show and promote this awesome female through Louisville at no expense to the buyer. I bought Worldwide x Hope’s Mirage embryos in the hope of getting a female just like this one! Train Station’s maternal sister, Hope’ s Mirage 2321, has “show heifer” written all over her – a great hip and hind leg, and that swoop to her body is amazing. She will be very popular on sale day! You will show her successfully and then she’ll be quickly transitioned to a starring role in the front pasture!

SS Hope’s Mirage won her division at Kansas City, Louisville, and Denver and countless jackpot shows along the way. She was admired for her softness and cocky look. With the emergence of her son, Train Station by Propel, it’s clear Hope will be a cornerstone donor for the future.

The stunning heifer calf Hope’s Mirage 2321 provides ample evidence that the mating of Worldwide x Hope will produce phenomenal results!

Remember, Mirages are Roses. So, 1802 has one of the greatest cow families of the breed on her top and bottom sides. 1802’s Worldwide mating was a hotly contested Revival embryo lot last year. Demand for her Red Knight mating offered as Lot 43A may get even hotter!

Aviator daughters are becoming #@$&! hard to find and the Missing Mirage family has been proven (over and over) to be the REAL DEAL. Don’t let this ECONOMIC OPPORTUNITY pass you by!

We thought Dixie 947G had great potential to make show cattle with the correct matings – looks like Aviator was a good choice! Whoa! That’s what everyone has said when they first see this heifer. She has “big, broody donor cow” written all over her, without sacrificing any look. Everything about Mona Lisa 2 303 (whom we call “Tank”) is massive – huge foot, huge belly, big-topped, with the rear one-third of a Kardashian. Sired by one of the hottest bulls in the breed, let’s look at her dam 2411 – a hidden treasure I found at Brian Kohlstaedt’s place, once the glare off his bald head quit blinding me (lol). She’s an Aviator daughter out of a full sister to Asset. We’ve had a few calves out of her now and, like Lot 52, they have all been extremely impressive!

Crawfdown Lucys always have lots of style and the dam of Lot 55 did very well in the show ring in Canada. We like style, but functional traits that make easy keeping cows keep us in business. This Long Look x Lucy heifer is wide-topped, stout made and very complete. She will make a functional, easy keeping COW that will keep you in business. Leemon Cattle Company bought her maternal sister last year, and she has turned out great for them in Oklahoma cow country!

Carrie Jane 063, dam of Lot 56, is a full sister to our promotional bull Fast Track, and she will soon be a donor after she has her second calf. Adalynn, age 10, is offering Destiny 301 that she has halter-broken herself and had success showing already. This heifer is one of the biggest ribbed, and highest performing calves that we have raised. She is backed by the Carrie Jane family that is one of the most consistent cow families at the foundation of our herd.

The Weston Mary connection got me thinking about my days working at Premier Beef alongside Cowman Bill Marsden. What would he think of this cow? (He’d love her.) Who would he breed her to? (Lookout, of course!) I don’t think Marsden would have given away a great cow like this, but I’m going to – in his memory.

Thanks for the lessons and the laughs, my friend. The Shorthorn breed created many great cowmen for today’s beef industry, and you were one of the best!
