First let me say thank you for your interest in the 6th Annual FHSU bull Sale. The response this year from breeders, staff and friends has been incredible. The students and I have been diligently working to increase our number and quality of bulls to present to you.

The cow herd here at FHSU has focused on building a solid foundation on predictable genetics with production and maternal value. We have begun to incorporate fresh genetics to add power, performance, and phenotype. The results of this are prevalent throughout this catalog.

This year the bulls have exceeded our expectations in every department. These maybe the stoutest set of bulls we have ever offered. As a group they are stout made, square built with extra mass and substance. We have been extremely vigilant on maintaining sound functional bulls that are impeccably good footed with gentle dispositions.

At FHSU we are incredibly proud of our cattle, but we are prouder of our students. We are a teaching unit first and foremost. We strive to give our students the tools and experience they need to continue forward in their professional careers. Please take a moment to visit with the students on sale day. They remain our best commodity for the future of agriculture.

• When we started putting together this year’s sale, the easiest thing to do was make Prophet Lot 1. This bull embodies everything we are trying to build here at FHSU. Every seed stock producer writes footnote after footnote about how their bulls are stout, heavy muscled and high performing. While Prophet is all those things, but what makes this bull special is combining all those measurable traits in a truly sound package. It starts at the ground on a massive foot and is absolutely mesmerizing on the move. Few bulls in this breed possess his ability to reach and flex on their hind leg.

• His Wideload dam was an absolute tank of a cow and was a cornerstone of our donor program until her passing last summer. Her quality is seen in a number of sons throughout the offering. His sire Preacher is making an impact not only at Ft. Hays but in several herds across the country.

• Like two peas in a pod, 238J follows the same pattern as his brother Prophet. Long bodied, smooth shouldered, with an excellent hip and hind leg. The balance and eye appeal of the Preacher x 204 mattings were very consistent. Defiantly one to keep an eye on!

• Probably the nicest fronted of the three brothers. 227J is very athletic on the move, level topped and square hipped. Not quite as heavy muscled as the other two, but makes it up in extra eye appeal.

• 222J is a very smooth made well balanced bull out of a tremendous Daymaker daughter. His maternal sister was campaigned last year by Emma Anderson winning multiple breed champions and 4th overall at the Mid American Show in Grand Island.

• I don’t know if I can put into words how unique and cool this guy is. 219J is an absolute brick you know what house. What makes him so much cooler is that while being just massive topped and chalked full of muscle, he is super sound with a killer look. He is one of the more moderate framed fall bulls but without sacrificing any pounds.

Even though this bull doesn’t get the recognition that some of the others do, I would hate to go a breeding season without him. 223J exemplifies what his sire does for us year after year. What is a Tiger Red you ask? These bulls are between 50 and 75% Red Angus with the balance of their genetic makeup being red Simmental. The cows behind this program are a cross of two bulls that saw heavy use for a number of years here at FHSU, Shamwow and Oscar. Shamwow sires heavy muscled, rugged calves that push the scales down at weaning. Oscar was our go to calving ease sire that produced maternal daughters. The Shamwow/Oscar cross has left us with a set of rugged, highly maternal cows. When mated to our current sire battery the results have been have been performance oriented cattle with moderate birth weights and strong maternal traits.
