Shorthorn Genomic 50K Testing Now Available at Reduced Price As many of you know the ASA has been diligently trying to collect DNA samples the past several years to build a training population for breed specific DNA tests for Shorthorn cattle to formulate genomic EPDs. The great news is that we are half way there, but we still have a long way to go. It seems like many breeders have been sitting on the fence waiting for something to happen. Well now thanks to a generous donation from the Shorthorn Foundation and the ASA Board of Directors agreement to match those funds there is no better time to step up and participate! With the foundation and board of director’s support the testing will now cost breeders $25 per sample, and also include parental verification. This offer will only last until June 1, 2014 and be available for those animals that have EPD accuracies of .30 or higher for

growth traits (BW, WW, YW, Milk) and three out of the four carcass traits (CW, Fat, MARB, REA). The commercialized versions of these tests will cost $90 for the DNA test and parental verification an additional $30 per head in the future. On the next pages you will find two separate lists containing the most wanted bulls and females. These individuals have at least .30 accuracy or better for both performance and carcass traits. If you have an animal on the list we urge you to submit a DNA sample on the individual and submit it to the ASA for testing. Building our testing population is integral for the Shorthorn breed to move forward with genomic EPDs and keep pace with the other beef breeds. Currently the ASA has 60 samples already at the office waiting for genom-

ic testing from the following operations: Leveldale Farms, Waukaru Farms, Crooked Post Shorthorns, Bowman Superior Genetics, Rob Sneed Shorthorns, Y Lazy Y Shorthorns, Kaper Shorthorns, JDMC Cattle Co., A & T Cattle Co., and JT Moreland Farms. A HUGE thank you to those operations for stepping up and sending their samples in early! = Beef Business ASA Rolls Out New Regional Show System The American Shorthorn Association is happy to announce a new Regional Show System to replace the old PACE Point System. Over the last several years there have been recommendations from the Senior Show Committee to revamp the old PACE System. The Regional Show System will recognize more winners throughout the United States. The new system will consist of five regions throughout the United States. Each region will have two Regional Shows and one Super Regional Show. Super Regional Show participants will receive more points for both class and division winners. Points will be kept in each region and at the end of the year a show bull and female of the year will be named in each region. To be eligible for the end of the year awards the animal must be exhibited at two of the three point shows in the region. Animals will be eligible for multiple region awards if the animal is exhibited at the minimum number of shows for each region. The group classes at all of shows were also changed in hopes of increasing participation. The Best-Six

Head class was replaced with a Breeder’s Herd Class, which will consist of four head of cattle with both sexes represented and bred by the exhibitor or working family unit (brothers, sisters, aunts and uncles). The number of animals required for the Get-of-Sire Class was lowered to three head with both sexes still represented. Regional shows will rotate annually throughout the region and Super Regionals will rotate if needed. If your state fair would like to be considered for a Regional Point Show, please have your state association and livestock superintendent submit a formal request to the ASA Board of Directors. Another change is that there will now be two stand-alone National Shows held at the North American International Livestock Exposition in Louisville, Ky., and the National Western Stock Show in Denver, Colo., every year. First of all, DS is not a lethal condition from a genetic inheritance standpoint. Animals known as homozygotes are cattle that carry two copies of the undesirable gene. Homozygotes of DS, referred to as “DSH” in the registry, in rare cases can be animals that function normally in a breeding herd. Most cattle that are DSH will show some outward signs of the genetic condition. In this case, the condition is a malformation of the rear pastern or pasterns (ankle area) of the animal. The important aspect of DSH is to understand that ALL progeny of DS Homozygotes will be at least Carriers of the condition…or worse. Carriers of the DS condition, known as DSC in the registry, also need to be handled differently when mating decisions are made. Though the original mutations happened in completely separate populations, the DS condition sits on the same chromosome as Pulmonary Hyperplasia with Anasarca (PHA). Unfortunately, in the development of the embryo, it appears that the presence of a PHA Carrier can impact the phenotype (physical appearance) of a DS Carrier. In other words, if you mate a PHAC to a DSC and the unfavorable copy of both genes is passed on, the resulting calf will likely have deformed rear limbs below the hock. In each case, there is a 25% chance this will occur. As a result, a Carrier of DS could show the condition and a homozygote could appear perfectly normal. If you are

testing unknown pedigrees for DS, it is highly recommended that you also test for PHA at the same time. The following matrix details what possibilities exist when mating through, around, or away from the DS condition: F=Free, C=Carrier, & H=Homozygote DSF X DSF= All progeny DSF with no outward signs of the condition. DSF/PHAF X DSC/PHAF= 50% of the progeny will be DSC, 50% of the progeny will be DSF, rear limbs should be normal. DSF/PHAC X DSC/PHAF= 25% of progeny will be DSC/PHAC and likely will show malformed rear limbs below the hock, 25% will be DSC/PHAF and appear normal, 25% will be DSF/PHAC and appear normal, 25% will be DSF/PHAF and appear normal. DSC/PHAF X DSC/PHAF= 25% of the progeny will be DSH, rear limbs will likely be affected, but can also appear normal, 50% of the progeny will be DSC and rear limbs appear normal, 25% of the progeny will be DSF and rear limbs appear normal. Regardless of the outcome, if progeny of this mating are to be registered, testing will be required. DSC/PHAC X DSC/PHAF= Though it is unlikely a DSC/PHAC animal will be mobile enough to breed, this mating will result in a 25% chance progeny will be DSF and normal in appearance, 25% will be DSC/PHAC and likely show rear limb

malformation, 25% will be DSC/PHAF and appear normal, 12.5% will be DSH/PHAC and likely show severe malformation of the rear limbs, and 12.5% will be DSH/PHAF, these animals may appear normal or have outward signs of the condition. Regardless of the outcome, if progeny of this mating are to be registered, testing will be required. DSH X DSF= This mating is important to understand, because 100% of the progeny will be DSC. Again, if the Carrier status for PHA comes through here too, the resulting calf will likely be affected by the condition. DSH/PHAF X DSH/PHAF= Though this mating is strongly not recommended, ALL progeny will be DSH/PHAF, though some progeny may appear normal in appearance. Moving forward, the ASA will not allow registration of breeding animals that are homozygous for known genetic conditions (effective date to be announced later). With most known conditions, this is a non-issue since a lethal condition eliminates homozygotes from the population. In the case of DS, homozygotes can appear normal. Unfortunately, its interaction with PHA and the potential penetrance into the commercial sector makes it imperative that breeders take this seriously and work hard to educate their customer base. Bottom line, breeders should avoid mating any suspect pedigrees of PHA and/or DS to one another. The technology is readily available to test for these conditions; breeders should be proactive in testing their herd and potential sale cattle. =

=New & Notes William Lynn “Bill” Bliss, longtime Newkirk area resident and business entrepreneur, entered the Heavenly Kingdom late Thursday afternoon, February 13, 2014, at Integris Baptist Medical Center, Oklahoma City. He was 79. The son of Harmon Francis Bliss and Erma Chloe Parks Bliss, Bill was born January 27, 1935, in Ponca City. He grew up on a farm SW of Newkirk and was active in raising and showing calves, lambs and pigs. A member of both 4-H and FFA, he was active in helping his father and brothers on the farm. He attended his first eight years of school at Center School. He attended Newkirk High School, playing football and going on several 4-H judging trips. He graduated in 1953 and has made efforts to keep in touch with former classmates. He attended Panhandle State in Goodwell, Okla., for one semester. Bill always stated that he graduated from the University of “Hard Knocks”. Bill married Alice Dent and pursued a career working on a ranch in Osage County. They had three children, Alan, Ricky and Taffy. He began working with a construction company and later formed his own Bliss Construction Company, building feed mills in several states, many of which are still in operation. Bill became a sales representative selling feed mill equipment for several different companies. On December 2, 1978, Bill married Katherine Marie “Katie” Trenary Haywood in Peckham and embraced her two children, Scott and Maribeth. In 1979, after being urged to design his own hammermill, which he called the Eliminator, Bill, along with sons Alan and Ricky, began Bliss Industries, Inc. The company grew and they purchased some land in Ponca City, selling equipment all over the world. Bill had a heart for young people and education, both in the industrial and agricultural fields. He along with his wife, Katie, donated a sculpture to Pioneer Technology Center entitled “Power of Thought”. They have supported local FFA and 4-H groups. Bill was an active member of the Peckham Christian Church. He was a member of the American

Feed Industry Association, recognized for leadership, and also a member of Association of Operative Millers and many other industries associated through his life. He was a member of the Belted Galloway Association and Short Horn Association. Bill is survived by his wife, Katie; children, Alan and Cathy Bliss, rural Newkirk, Ricky and Jan Bliss, Ponca City, Taffy and Clifford Locke, rural Newkirk, Scott and Joyce Haywood, Ponca City, and Maribeth and Bill Ratliff, Peckham; his brother, Donald and wife, Lois, Bliss of Palmyra, Penn.; grandchildren and their spouses Angie Bliss, Rance and Allison Bliss, Cassy Bliss, Jason Bliss, Amanda Jones, Misty and Chad Cook, Amber Horinek, Brandon Horinek, Kelly Braga, Brandi Maupin, Misti Cordell, Seth and Amber Locke, Jase and Barclay Locke, Jeanne Erickson, Aaron and Alyssa Haywood, Heather and Nate Loe, Cameron Kekahbah and Jesse Tosca, Melissa and Darin Sparks, Tracy and David Davis, Stephanie Ratliff and Elizabeth Ratliff; 30 greatgrandchildren; and one great-greatgrandchild. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews. He was a wonderful husband, father, grandpa, uncle and friend and will be missed by many. Bill is preceded in death by his parents; an infant brother, Harmon; a sister, Alcina Grell; two brothers, Francis and Earnest Bliss; and a greatgreat-granddaughter, Aubrey Rayne Scott. Lynn Nelson, 66, of Albert Lea, Minn., Lynn died Friday afternoon, February 21, 2014 while moving snow on the farm. Lynn Allen Nelson was born on June 19, 1947, to Wayne E. and Mabel (Keen) Nelson in Ft. Dodge, Iowa. He grew up on the family farm in Goldfield, Iowa, and was baptized and confirmed at

Ullensvang Lutheran in Thor, Iowa. Lynn graduated from Goldfield High School in 1965 and served in the National Guard. He attended Iowa State University as an animal science major, later Farrier’s College in Arizona, and then completed graphic design at Mankato State University. On July 9, 1977, Lynn was united in marriage to Gale Jolene Jenson at Trinity Lutheran Church in Albert Lea. Lynn farmed in Iowa, Missouri, and Minnesota. He was blessed with a natural ability to work with all species of livestock. Lynn was very involved in the horse industry by shoeing, training, showing, and judging horses. He coached national 4-H youth horse judging teams. His community service included 4-H key leader, county livestock committee member, county cattleman’s association, and serving as director on the Freeborn County Fair board. As a youth, Lynn showed registered Angus cattle and later diversified into horses, hogs, and sheep. For the last two decades, he and Gale owned Top Notch Stock Farm, breeding registered Shorthorn cattle. Lynn served as a Minnesota state director and currently was a national director for the American Shorthorn Association. Lynn had artistic ability; he enjoyed drawing, painting, and acting in ACT theatre. He also enjoyed gardening and raising chickens for farm fresh eggs. Lynn lived his faith, loved his family, and enjoyed the fellowship of others. His smile was infectious and he was known to share a joke to brighten the day. Lynn served on church council, enjoyed singing in the church choir, and ushering. His newest role as “Grandpa” was now the highlight of his life. Survivors include his wife, Gale; son, Jeffrey Ryon Nelson; daughter-in-law, Melissa; grandchildren Allie Rae, Josie Faith and a new arrival due this spring, all of New Ulm, Minn.; parents-in-law, Phil & Nita Jenson, Albert Lea; sister and brother-in-law, Trudy & Darvin Moberg, SD; sister-in-law, Bonnie Nelson, Iowa; and several aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, and nephews. Lynn was preceded in death by his parents; grandparents; and brother, Phil. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to Youth for Christ or the National Shorthorn Foundation.


C.F. Martin, Jr., inducted in KCA Hall of Fame The Region 2 Kentucky Cattlemen’s Association Hall of Fame inductee for 2014 is Mr. C.F. Martin, Jr., of Hart County. Martin owns and operates Martindell Shorthorn Farm in Hardyville. The cowherd began in 1952 with the purchase of his first Shorthorn heifer, and has grown to 125 cows today. In 1978 Martin purchased the current farm and presently has 310 acres used for hay and pasture for the cow herd. Martindell Shorthorn Farm has sold cattle to over 20 states as well as Canada and the farm has over 30 Champion and Reserve Champion banners won at the Kentucky State Fair. The farm is also a regular consigner of the Kentucky Beef Expo. In 1998 Martin was honored as Cattlemen of the Year by the Hart County Cattlemen’s Association and

has been an active member of both the county and state Cattlemen’s Associations for 20+ years. Since 1995, Martin has been a member of the Farmers Rural Electric Cooperative board of directors and has served as chairman. Martin has also served on the Board of Directors for Hart County Fair Association for 40 years and has been a member of the Hart County Farm Bureau for 50 years. In 1998 he was chosen “Builder of the Breed” for Shorthorn cattle by the American Shorthorn Association. C.F. and his wife Martha have been married for over 50 years. They have two children and two grandchildren. Five people were announced at the Evening Banquet at this year’s Kentucky Cattlemen’s Association Convention held in Lexington, Ky. They were the association’s 2014 Hall

of Fame inductees. Inductees included: Scotty Parsons from Region 1, C.F. Martin, Jr., from Region 2, Don Sorrell from Region 3, Mike Gabbard from Region 4, and Robert Vickery from Region 5. =

John Hagie Awarded “Friend of the Iowa Beef Expo” Award The Iowa Beef Breeds Council has named John Hagie as the recipient of the coveted “Friend of the Iowa Beef Expo” award. John Hagie will be receiving his award for his contribution and support of the Iowa Beef Expo, now being held for the 38th year. John

Mary Ellen Ulry, 77, passed away on February 15, 2014 at Mount Carmel East Hospital. She was born on November 4, 1936 in New Albany, Ohio, a daughter to the late Ora and Bessie L. Doran. Mary is preceded in death by her husband of 48 years Donald J. Ulry. She is survived by her children, Craig Ulry, Jeff (Melinda) Ulry; grandchildren, Daniel (Marta) Ulry, Lydia Ulry all of Johnstown; sister, Virginia Kellett of New Albany, Ohio; niece, Diana Blessing; nephew, David (Virginia) Kellett and many cousins. Mary was a member of Johnstown United Methodist Church where she

In upcoming issues of Shorthorn Country, the American Shorthorn Association will feature articles aimed to help you become more familiar with each Board of Director member. The board is passionate about serving the needs of members and ensuring the success of Shorthorn cattle well into the future. As cattle producers, we are familiar with the long hours, patience, and dedication that are required in the daily care of our cattle herds. For Dr. James Freed, the commitment does not end when chores are finished. Freed, a pediatrician practicing in Chickasha, Oklahoma balances his day between responsibilities as a physician and cattleman. Freed, a graduate of Oklahoma Christian College and the University of Oklahoma Medical School has been practicing medicine since 1975. Dr. Freed’s passion is for the children he treats as a pediatrician. Currently

serving as chair of Pediatrics and the President of Southern Plains Medical Center, Freed consistently strives to make a positive difference in patients’ lives and to build personal relationships with children and their families. Equally passionate about his role as a cattle producer, Freed operates a purebred Shorthorn Cattle herd at Double J Ranch near Chickasha. Beverly, Freed’s wife, also operates her own Shorthorn operation, Jeepetta Cattle Company. Together, the two run nearly 100 cow/calf pairs. Since their initial involvement with the Shorthorn breed when their children exhibited Shorthorn calves in 4-H and FFA, the family’s contribution to the breed has continued to grow. James Freed has served as past President of the American Shorthorn Association, a current Board of Director member serving a total of 7 years on the board, and longtime President of the Oklahoma Shorthorn Association. As a current American Shorthorn Association board of director, Freed works hard to move the breed forward successfully into the future. As a breed, areas that could make a difference include implementing a multi-breed EPD system and revamping the registration process to include registration papers available to breeders online as well as the ability to e-mail

invoices and registration papers to members directly. As a past 3 time Shorthorn Junior National Chairman, maintaining the strength of the Shorthorn youth program is extremely important to Freed and the board of directors. When considering the impact Shorthorns can make in the commercial beef industry, Freed stresses that for the breed to make a bigger impact, data must be more accessible to commercial cattlemen, insuring issues such as birth weight are kept in check. Education paired with data could prove to be the best defense against past negative stereotypes among commercial cattlemen concerning the Shorthorn breed. The Shorthorn breed continues to make strides forward as a breed and with continued proactive approaches to breed promotion; the breed will enjoy a bright future. When asked “why run for the board again?” Freed remarked with a smile that he is “simply a servant to others.” “I love to give back in any way that I can. There isn’t anything that I wouldn’t do for kids and the American Shorthorn Association.” =

We can’t rest on their work but must continue to work hard in the arena and not worry about those who criticize but who will

work beside those who try to improve and support the value of a great breed. The Shorthorn breeders, around the world, have put a lot of effort into producing cattle for the pasture field, the show ring, and market. The effort to meet the demands of today’s market is not easy but who said it would be? Today’s market demands high yield with low price or high wins with low price. Both want the lowest price with the highest success. How do we achieve this? I think it is by daring greatly. The people who are willing to step into the arena, I wish you the highest of success and I will be in the ring with you. =

Things You Gotta Know... • Parking passes will be required to enter fairgrounds. The fee is $8 for the length of the show. You will be allowed to unload and pick up your parking pass at that time. • When sending in entries, you must include a COPY of the registration papers or internet pedigree printout. Original papers MUST be brought to the show and will be checked and tattoo verified. • Entries MUST include full fee payment, including stalling fee, or they will not be processed. There will be no refunds on entries. See General Rule #19. • Check your animals tattoo and the corresponding registration papers before you leave home to make sure tattoos are legible and match the registration paper. Entries not matching will be DISQUALIFIED from show. See General Show Rules #7. • All individual and group contests must be entered by going through contest registration, see schedule for registration time. No mail-in entries are required for specific contests, but the contest fee MUST be paid if entering any contests, including showmanship. • No show entries post marked after the late deadline of May 15, 2014 will be accepted. • No entry substitutions will be allowed past the May 15 deadline. • All animals must be registered in the sole name (no farm or family names allowed) of the junior member who will be showing it by May 1. Health Requirements Animal Identification: The Kentucky Department of Agriculture is cooperating with USDA on improving the traceability of US livestock moving interstate when animal disease events take place. Currently, all livestock 18 months or older sold at a Kentucky approved livestock market must be identified to the farm of origin. Under the proposed rule, unless specifically exempted, livestock moved interstate would have to be officially identified and accompanied by an interstate certificate of veterinary inspection or other documentation, such as owner-shipper statements or brand certificates. The proposed rule encourages the use of low-cost technology and specifies approved forms of official identification for each species, such as metal ear tags for cattle. However, recognizing the importance and prevalence of other identifications in certain regions, shipping and receiving states or tribes are permitted to agree upon alternative forms of identification such as brands or tattoos. =Tartan Plaid National Lassie Association I would like to wish you spring greetings from the Bluegrass State, Kentucky. In my article this month, I would like to take the opportunity to introduce you to the dedicated ladies that make up your Shorthorn Lassie Board of Directors. I asked each lady to send me their biography, and the following is what they would like to share. I will say, they are a highly educated, outgoing group of women that I am thrilled to be able to work with. Many of these ladies are past state queens that became national queens or alternate queens or they are queen sisters and/or queen moms. Some were raised with Shorthorn cattle or they married into the Shorthorn Family. The mutual interest we all share is our love of Shorthorn cattle. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the wonderful, dedicated women that have served as board members in the past 50 plus years. Thank you for all you have done to make this Shorthorn Ambassador program such a tremendous success. I also want to thank all the women who have come up through the ranks wearing the Royal Stuart Plaid, handing out ribbons, giving speeches, serving as our Shorthorn Ambassadors. What a wonderful Shorthorn Family! I would like to introduce myself. I am your National Shorthorn Lassie President. I reside in Smithfield, Kentucky, just a short drive from beautiful downtown Louisville, home of the NAILE (North American International Livestock Exposition). My husband, Maurice and I own and operate MFK Shorthorns with our two children, Fran (David) McCall and Wes Korthaus. Kentucky has been our home for almost 34 years. I grew up on a livestock and grain farm in northern Illinois with my parents, LeRoy & Ruth Getzelman and my two sisters, Gail (Lloyd) Stover and Jill (Mike) Zumer. Trigal Farm (3 girls) started with Shorthorn cattle when dad came home from a Shorthorn sale with my first heifer. My husband, Maurice grew up on a livestock and grain farm in eastern Iowa. His great, great grandparents imported Shorthorns to this country in the late 1800s’, making our children 5th generation Shorthorn Cattlemen. This is my second

opportunity to serve as your lassie president, having been on the board in the mid1980s’. I wore the Tartan Plaid as the Illinois Lassie Queen and am also proud to have been a national queen mom. I also served on the national junior board. I continue to be the bookkeeper for Stonelea Farm, in Prospect, Ky, where we raised Shorthorn cattle for over 26 years. I volunteer with many community programs and like my dad, I was a 4-H leader for over 20 years. My most rewarding and enjoyable job is being the morning chore mom at MFK Shorthorns. I am Lori Moore of Jerseyville, Illinois and I serve as the Vice President. I am married to Ron Moore and am the mother of two daughters, Emily Moore-Adcock ( Justin) of Chatham, Ill., and Sarah of Jerseyville. I am employed at Twin Rivers MRI Center in Alton, Ill. I have served as a board member and as an officer on the Tri-County Lassie Association and the Illinois Shorthorn Association. I enjoy spending time in the show barn with my family and I am what one would consider your typical show mom. I can usually be found running a blower or fixing a meal in the camper. I grew up showing and raising Horned Hereford cattle, but have grown to love the red, white and roan during my 29 years of marriage. My husband and I, along with his family, own and operate Moore Shorthorns, where we have about 150 head of registered Shorthorn cows. In my limited spare time, I enjoy reading. I am grateful to be a part of an organization that has given so much to my family over the years. I am Fran McCall of Shelbyville, Kentucky. I am a fifth generation Shorthorn cattlewoman and am currently serving as the Secretary for the National Shorthorn Lassies. I received my Bachelor’s Degree from Western Kentucky University (WKU) and my Master’s Degree from the University of Kentucky (UK). I work for the Kentucky Farm Bureau Federation as a Commodity Specialist. I work with agriculture groups and roadside farm markets all over the Commonwealth of Kentucky. In my spare time, I enjoy helping my husband David with our cattle operation,

McCall Show Cattle and on his family farm, Grand Meadow Farm. Along with the grain farming operation, we run a small herd of Shorthorns, Red Polls and commercial cattle. I served as the 2005-2006 National Shorthorn Lassie Queen. I am Pam Dressen and I serve as the Membership Chair/Treasurer on the National Shorthorn Lassie Board. I live with my husband, Jim, in Ellsworth, Wisconsin on a small farm. We have 30 cows which include purebred Shorthorns and ShorthornPlus cows. I teach kindergarten in Red Wing, Minn. We have two children – Brianna, who currently teaching 2nd grade and was the 2008 National Shorthorn Lassie Queen, and Caleb, who is a junior at the University of Minnesota majoring in animal science. I was Minnesota’s Shorthorn Lassie Queen in 1980. I grew up on Cannondale Farm, a purebred Shorthorn farm in Red Wing, Minn. My Great-Grandfather purchased our first shorthorns in 1901. Shorthorns have been an important part of my family for five generations. I am Theresa Sisung from St. Johns, Michigan. I am currently serving as the Publicity Officer. I am the Advocacy & Outreach Director for the Michigan Corn Growers Association and Corn Marketing Program of Michigan. I have a Bachelor’s Degree from Michigan State University and am pursuing my Master’s Degree from Kansas State University. Along with my parents, Don & Jane Sisung, and sisters, Brenda Sisung and Christine (Arden) Heverly, we own and operate Sisung Farms. We raise corn, soybeans and wheat. In addition to that, we have a small herd of Shorthorn cows and a feedlot. As a sideline, I have a few sows and raise show pigs in my spare time. I am a lassie queen sister and have been attending Shorthorn events and Junior Nationals for many years. I am Christine Heverly from Grand Ledge, Michigan. I am currently serving as the National Lassie Queen Co-Chair. I work for MSU Extension and am the 4-H Program Coordinator for Eaton County. I received my Bachelor’s Degree from Grand Valley State University and my Master’s Degree from Michigan State University. I grew up on a livestock and grain farm.


I showed Shorthorn cattle at several Junior Nationals. During my reign as the 2005-2006 Alternate National Lassie Queen, I had the opportunity to attend numerous Shorthorn events including Junior Nationals, NAILE and Denver. I got to meet many people and make several lifelong Shorthorn friends. My husband Arden and I are actively involved in the Shorthorn business with my family, Sisung Farms. Hello! May I introduce myself? I’m Elaine Dragstrem, from Amboy, Indiana. I reside on a family farm consisting of corn, soybeans, and Shorthorn cattle, with my husband Bob and two daughters Megan 19 and Allison 16. Our daughters have been very involved in the Shorthorn Association and thus as a parent I became involved. I grew up showing Shorthorns and showing in 4-H at the county and state level. I always had a dream of being a Lassie when I was young, but fell short of that dream. With our daughters being crowned 2012-2013 Alternate National Lassie Queen and are 2013 Indiana Lassie Princess, I have had the opportunity to become very involved and work hand in hand with the Lassie Association. In November 2013 I had the opportunity

to serve as a member of the National Lassie Board of Directors; I am currently the Queen Co-chair. If I can be of any help to your state association I am just an e-mail away. I am Amanda Gipe McKeith. I am an Assistant Professor of Animal Science in the Department of Agriculture at Western Kentucky University, WKU, in Bowling Green, Ky. I grew up in Merced, California, where my family still operates Sunny Day Shorthorns. I married my husband Russell in December 2012 and he is quickly learning about the Shorthorn breed. I was the 2002-2003 Alternate National Shorthorn Lassie Queen, served on the AJSA Board of Directors from 2004-2006, and was the 2006 Australian Shorthorn Ambassador. I served on the National Shorthorn Lassie Board of Directors as queen chair from 2007-2011. Currently, I serve as the Ways and Means Chair for the National Shorthorn Lassie Association. I received my Bachelor of Science degree and my Master’s Degree at Kansas State University. I received my PhD at Penn State in December 2012. At WKU, I coach the livestock and meat judging teams and serve as the WKU Block & Bridle Advisor. =

Illinois Shorthorn Lassie Crowned The Illinois Shorthorn Lassies are proud to announce Alysa Hofstatter as the 2014 Illinois Shorthorn Lassie Queen. The 18-year-old daughter of Alan and Ruth Hofstatter of Lowpoint, Alysa is currently a freshman at Illinois Central College studying Ag Business. Post ICC, Alysa plans on attending Iowa State University to complete her degree. She has been an active member of the both the IJSA and AJSA since

the age of ten. Alysa has participated in numerous junior nationals and competed in speech contest, photography, herdsman quiz and beef cook- off. She enjoys being chute side at the farm, helping with everything from cow vaccinations to grooming sale cattle. “I am eager for this opportunity to represent the breed

American Shorthorn Association Board Meeting Minutes American Shorthorn Association Board Meeting Minutes, January 17, 2014, Denver, Colo. Board members in attendance: President Les Mathers, Vice President Mike Bennett, Billy Zack Taylor, Ricky Guidry, Mark Gordon, Marty Loving, Lynn Nelson, Ed Kruse, Jim Freed and executive Montie Soules. President, Les Mathers called the meeting to order at 8:00 a.m. Minutes from the November 15, 2013 had been approved and Key Performance Indicators reviewed. The financial report through December 31, 2013 was approved by the board. Committee reports: The Genetic Evaluation Committee had reviewed the first test run from the Multi-Breed (Simmental) evaluation. Their recommendation was to continue with the 2 nd and 3 rd test runs with a positive opinion for moving to the Simmental Multi-Breed Evaluation for EPDs at ASA. The Show Committee reported of a conference call regarding the new Regional Show System for ASA. They recommended the “Best Six Head” class be replaced with a “Breeder’s Herd of 4 Head”. They also recommended that the Get-of-Sire be reduced to 3 head in the future instead of 4 head. Other proposals included the revised Point System and regional show locations from the previous presentation. The Show Committee and staff agreed on recommendations for finalizing the Regional Show System. This lead to remarks from the board suggesting that a Board approved list of 50 or so judges be available for the Show Committee and Junior Board to use when selecting show judges in the future. The Board discussed giving direction to the committees and establishing priorities for agendas that would help the Board gain insight as to how membership felt about issues in the future. Having committees engaged in relevant issues and to provide the board with recommendations is a high priority. Discussion continued regarding the identification of the specific roles of the Junior Sustainability Committee and the Junior National Operational Committee to ensure the committees do not overlap on topics or issues. The Board approved giving guidelines and/or priorities to the committees in the future. The motion passed unanimously. The Board discussed genomic DNA samples for the polled/horned and genomic 50K tests needed. Because of

the lack of cooperation in getting samples from breeders, staff would need to visit the breeders and obtain samples when traveling in the areas. The Board discussed Genetic Defects: What role should ASA should take regarding Genetic Defects within our breed? Should Genetic Defects continue to not be allowed in ASA sponsored sales? What recommendations or policies should be put in place for disclosing Genetic Defects in all sales or sale catalogs? Should there be restrictions or tests on new initial entry animals brought into the breed? The discussion continued about the importance how genetic defects should be handled in general. It was determined that committees should have this item on their agendas for discussion or recommendations so the Board can have a more clear idea of the wishes and needs of the membership. There was discussion in the area of disclosure in sale catalogs for ShorthornPlus percentage. The Board discussed rounding off percentage to equal fractions and the importance of sale catalogs showing the percentage of all ShorthornPlus cattle sold for full disclosure to the buyer, plus the importance of having the proper percentage recorded for the accuracy when figuring EPDs in the genetic evaluation. The Promotions Committee recommended better breed exposure for commercial acceptance. The committee asked about having funds from the insider advertising be allocated to the promotions or advertising accounts. This would be done in the future. The Junior Sustainability Committee reported tentative locations for the next ten years for the Junior National. The committee recommended having states become involved with possible contributions toward the Junior National each year. Suggestions were made to have past junior members become involved as resources for possible future funding. The Board discussed the division of the Junior Sustainability committee and the Junior National Operational Committee. The roles of both committees were discussed with the understanding that both committees report to the board separately and keep each other informed of progress. There is a need to make efforts to avoid overlapping on discussion items. Patrick Wall was on a conference call with the Board during the meeting as a resource for the multi breed genetic evaluation updates DNA lab questions. There was a question and answer

period for the Board about these two topics. The Board approved to have GeneSeek as the official ASA approved lab, pending contractual agreement and legal review. Motion passed unanimously The Board approved to continue the 2nd and 3rd test runs for the multibreed genetic evaluation at Simmental. Motion passed unanimously. The Board approved the tentative recommendation of Junior National Locations for the next ten years. Motion passed unanimously. The Board reinforced that genetic defect carriers will not be allowed to be sold in an ASA or AJSA sponsored event; this includes (live animals who are genetic defect carriers, embryos from carrier donors or sires and semen from carrier bulls), as the rule reads at the present time. Gwen Crawford reported on the Junior National Operational Committee’s progress for this year’s Junior National in Kentucky. The Board approved the judge for the yards/pen show in Denver for 2015. Motion passed unanimously. The Board authorized the executive to re-negotiate the fee schedule for recording performance data in the ASA system from the Canadian Shorthorn Association. Motion passed unanimously. The board went into executive session Meeting was adjourned at 12:30 p.m. The ASA Board of Directors, with newly elected directors reconvened to elect new officers on Saturday, January 18th after the annual meeting. Mike Bennett was elected President and Mark Gordon was elected Vice President. President Mike Bennett appointed Jim Freed Chairman of the Finance Committee. A solid red, polled, October 31, 2012 son of Ash Valley Duty 7155 and SL Misty 1003. This stout featured, big bodied bull had an actual 72 pound birthweight and was selected by Dave Minor, Pittsburg, Texas. $7,200 – Lot 2 – 2nd Top Selling Fall Yearling Bull – Ash Valley President 2759. Watertown Farm Show Shorthorn Show & Sale The Watertown Farm Show Shorthorn Show & Sale was held on February 13th 2014 in Watertown, South Dakota. Ten bulls were sold through the ring for gross sales of $25,200, averaging $2,520. Lot 12 was paraded through the ring first by Blane Osterday of Stangl Shorthorns, Java SD. Judge Grant Raml of Goodwin SD., commented on his sound structure, big foot, and handed the Grand Champion plaque to the owner of SBR Skyforce 572A. He is a red, 3-28-13 son of Sull Red Demand 9329 and SBR Halle Joe. Sold to Lawrence Roster of Spencer, SD, for $5,300. Reserve Champion honors went to

Alexander Livestock of Henry, SD. This roan, mid-April, son of CLB Buckshot and BFS Augusta Linda was the youngest bull in the sale and made up for his youth with one of the highest weight per day of age in the offering. He went home with Bob Timp of Desmet, SD, for $3,200. Turkey Ridge Shorthorns of Freeman SD, sold the second high seller for $4,500. This red, big topped, soggy made meatwagon went home with Ivan Von Pearson. Champion honors in the female division went to a progressive young cattleman by the name of Travis Hofer from Bridgewater, SD . TRAV Revival’s Luv is a solid red,

1/3/13, show heifer prospect with plenty of rib, muscle combined with a feminine profile and will be shown by Samuel Watt of Estelline, SD, this summer. She is out of SS Red Rocket and brought $4,000. Vander Wal Livestock of Brentford SD, sold a March of 2013 showstopper to the farmshow this year for $3,400. She is a double bred Jake’s Proud Jazz female who is square hipped, big ribbed and fancy in her skeletal design! Twenty females were sold for an average of $2,090 or $41,800. The Volume buyer of the day was David & Cody Olson of Wyndmere, ND, taking home four great females. =

The American Shorthorn Association (ASA) All-American Junior Breeder Program

JUNIOR PARTICIPANT INFORMATION The All-American Junior Breeder Program is an incentive-based, educational program aimed at teaching members of the American Junior Shorthorn Association (AJSA) about performance records and Expected Progeny Differences (EPD), coupled with desirable phenotype and their collective application to breeding Shorthorn cattle. Juniors will be monetarily awarded for their knowledge of the above topics, and specifically how the topics relate to their own herds. This is not a trophy or scholarship that only rewards the junior with the “best” EPDs, but rather a PROGRAM aimed at developing and testing a young breeder’s knowledge of their beloved breed. The ultimate goal is to engage young breeders into raising Shorthorn cattle long past their years as a junior member. •

Any paid member of the AJSA who is 17 years of age or older (Senior Division) by January 1st is eligible to participate. Eligible juniors must have a combined 10 active registered Shorthorn cows in their name, a family member’s name, OR their family’s herd name. (If you and your family do not have 10 head, please contact Patrick Wall through the ASA office for more information.) Participants will take a timed exam via email that will determine preparedness for an interview process. The exam will only be given once, and a new test will be written for the following year. Finalists will complete a phone interview with the ASA Consultant for Genetic Improvement and a beef industry professional. It will be much like a job interview is conducted. Winner(s) will receive the title of “All-American Junior Breeder” and will be announced at the AJSA Junior National Awards Banquet. It is not required that participants attend the show in order to win. Winner(s) will receive “Shorthorn Bucks” to purchase a purebred Shorthorn bull or female (no steers, embryos, pregnancies or semen) ONLY from breeders who nominate their herds.

Breeders contribute to the program by nominating their herd for $100 on an annual basis. Winner(s) may only buy Shorthorn cattle from nominated herds! The ASA will contribute 1.0% of “The Summit” National Shorthorn Sale’s gross revenue to the program. State Associations may nominate all live cattle consigned in State Association sponsored sales by contributing $250 to the program on an annual basis. Winner(s) will receive “Shorthorn Bucks” to purchase a purebred Shorthorn bull or female (no steers, embryos, pregnancies or semen) ONLY from breeders who nominate their herds.

MONETARY AWARD EXAMPLE: In a given year, if 25 breeders nominate their herds ($2,500, “The Summit” sale gross is $200,000 ($2,000), and 10 state breed associations nominate their sale cattle ($2,500), the junior winners of the program would split $7,000. If four juniors are designated as All-American Junior Breeders, each would receive $1,750 to spend on a Shorthorn breeding animal!
