y the time most of you read this our Annual meeting and Forum will be history. Thank you to everyone who attended this year’s event. We are now in the middle of the holiday season, and the end of the year is fast approaching. The hustle and bustle of our many activities with friends and family make this a Plus, being part of the special time. Plus, being part of the Shorthorn family we all Shorthorn family we all truly become truly become part of a part of a “Family Friendly Breed”! “Family Friendly Breed”! Think of the Christmas or Holiday cards you send each year. How many are for fellow Shorthorn friends and associates? Look at the excitement our children have when they prepare to participate in State, Regional or National Junior Shows. For many, these relationships have created lifelong friendships that reach beyond the Shorthorn breed. The strength of any organization is its members. The ASA is bursting with passionate, caring folks with a common love of family and Shorthorns. That passion makes our association strong and viable. As a breed, we have made many strides during the past few years. Membership has been strong and new membership is even stronger. New membership is a sign of positive New membership is a sign of welcoming new breeders positive activity welcoming new activity will become the future breeders who will become the who leaders of the ASA. Members future leaders of the ASA. who believe in the breed are participating in new programs that provide the data necessary to gain a bigger role in U.S. beef cattle chain. The strong junior activity and support from the membership along with the new junior membership adds to the movement. Every single one of you makes a difference in this great breed of cattle and ultimately makes a difference in your own operations - every family or individual has their own goals which will be somewhat different than a partner or fellow breeder. When we all respect each other and work in unison to work toward the goals of the breed, we are all elevated to new When we all respect each heights! other and work in unison This all starts by being a “Family to work toward the goals Friendly Breed” because that of the breed, we are all togetherness develops the strength, elevated to new heights! advancement and expansion of the Breed. Shorthorn breeders have a lot to be proud of, such as the continued improved quality and acceptability of our cattle. We as a breed no longer have a birth weight problem because you addressed this issue. Are there some cattle in the breed with a birth weight issue? Of course, and that will always be the case. Still, in general, when you study most of the cattle in sales and the show ring, their EPDs indicate this is not a problem in the breed; proving our membership and breeders can address any issues, make the needed changes quickly and give our breed a different and more appealing look in a short time. I personally want to congratulate membership for addressing and making changes that provide the breed with a better image. The strength of unity and the family atmosphere is extremely special. During this Holiday Season enjoy family and friends as they are your most precious gifts. Please continue to share and be the “Family Friendly Breed” you have developed. It sets us apart from the rest of the industry. = Happy Holidays to All!!!

End of the Year Performance Wrap Up With the end of the year approaching, it’s a good time to wrap up everything from 2018 before starting into 2019. If you still have calves to register from the 2018 crop, it’s a great time to do it before fees increase on the calf ’s first birthday. If you haven’t turned in all of your performance data for the 2018 calf crop, or even those 2017 yearling weights, go ahead and get that done this month, too. With the switch to weekly genetic evaluations through BOLT, the old performance data deadlines every six months are a thing of the past. However, your data cannot be included in the EPD runs if it is still sitting on your desk and not in Digital Beef. The sooner you get your data turned in, the sooner you will see the effect on the EPDs of the animals in your herd. Compared to the 2016-17 fiscal year, performance data reporting was down slightly in 2017-18. If you are considering taking advantage of the new ASA Genomically Enhanced Heifer Program (GEHP), then birth weight, weaning weight, and yearling weight data has to be submitted on your heifers in order for them to qualify for

12

the credit towards their DNA testing. If you haven’t seen it already, the GEHP offers $15 credit towards the cost of a uLD or 50K genetic test (the tests that get you GE-EPDs) on yearling females that meet the following requirements: 1. Heifer must be born on or after January 1, 2017. 2. 75% of the yearling heifer inventory, with at least 3 heifers submitted, must be tested. 3. All heifers tested must have a recorded calving ease score, birth weight, weaning weight, and yearling weight. 4. Heifers with carcass ultrasound or feed intake records will receive an additional $15/head credit. If you have heifers that would qualify, you must notify me that you would like to participate; as space is limited to the first 500 heifers enrolled. Since the launch of the program October 1, more than 300 heifers have been submitted to GEHP. If you have been thinking about collecting DNA and genomic information on your heifers, don’t miss out on this opportunity.

Matt director of Woolfolk performance programs

We have several interesting projects coming in 2019. The third calf crop from the ASA National Sire Test at the University of Illinois will be born Fall 2019; while the 2018 calf crop will go through the feedlot, efficiency, and carcass data collection portions of the test. The plan is to have another National Sire Test Field Day at the U of I Saturday August 24, 2019. After such a strong showing last year for the first edition, make it your goal to join us this year as we plan to make the 2019 Field Day even better. Also, keep an eye out for other new opportunities coming down the line to work with universities for research trials using Shorthorn genetics. There will be more information to come in Spring 2019 on a project that I think will be exciting to breeders. I hope that all of you have a Merry Christmas, as well as a Happy New Year. It’s my favorite time of the year because we get to celebrate the greatest gift we could ever receive and spend time with those we love, all the while preparing for the hope and fresh start that a new year brings. Enjoy the holiday season! =

American Royal Show Honoree Dale Studer Family

Studer Shorthorns is a family operation built on generations of hard work, faith and love that has made a foundation for the future generations. Dale Studer’s grandfather, Ben, registered his first Shorthorn cattle in 1916 and their family has had Shorthorns since. In 1960, at only seven years old, Dale, the third generation of Studer Shorthorns, began following his father, Nate, around the barn to help him bring in the nurse cows. By 1965, Dale began going with Ben to state fairs and national shows. Dale bought his first heifer in 1968 from Bert Hanson, and since then it has always been Shorthorns to him. Dale’s love continued to grow for Shorthorns. He was able to learn from his Father, Grandfather, brother Mike and brother Rich first-hand what it meant to have a love for the Shorthorn breed. Dale and Anita got married in 1980 and started their family shortly after. Nathan and Kaisha were born while they lived in their first home. Farming was hard in the early 80s and by 1985 they moved to Hamilton, Texas, to work at Riverside Farms. Dale’s brothers remained in Wesley, Iowa and were able to keep a few Shorthorns with them. Dale and Anita stayed in Texas for six years and had three kids born there, Ashley, Austin and Sarah. They moved to Creston, Iowa, in 1991, where they still remain today. The kids, Nathan, Kaisha, Ashley, Austin and Sarah, got involved in 4-H and started showing. Nathan bought his first two show heifers from Jordan Acres when he started showing in 1993. The Studer Family hasn’t missed an Iowa State Fair since 1993 when Nathan started showing. This tradition still remains today and they continue taking cattle to the fair. As the Studer herd grew in numbers and quality in the early 2000s, they joined in their first production sale with Genetics Online in Eastern Iowa. Soon after, they joined with the Loudon family in the Generations of Excellence sale located closer to home. In 2005, Studer’s expanded their marketing of quality bulls to seedstock and commercial producers. They brought in genetics from Canada to provide something different to the herd. Bringing in these genetic additions in 2005 was one of the biggest changes at Studer’s. 22

Pictured L-R: Nancy Grathwhol-Heter (ASA Board of Director), Montie Soules (ASA Executive Secretary/CEO), Callie Prochaska (National Shorthorn Lassie Queen), Nathan & Brock, Dale, Anita, Ashley, Kaisha, Nicki, Austin, Sarah & Finley

In 2010, they moved to a new sale site on the home farm. The name ‘Family Legacies’ was born as they tried to decide what type of name was fitting for Studer Shorthorns. The Studer’s celebrated 100 years in the Shorthorn business in 2016. In the Fall of 2014, the Studer guys began discussing how they could get their bulls presented to a broader audience. This discussion developed their first online bull sale in February 2015. Studer Shorthorns currently has more than 150 Purebred Shorthorn cows with 800 acres of pasture. They have mostly winter and early spring calves from January to April. Family is a big part of Studer Shorthorns. As Dale and Anita’s children have gotten older, their family continues to expand. Their children are always quick to step-up and help at shows and sales. Nate and his son Brock are active in the day to day operation at Studer Shorthorns. Ashley, Chance, Kyser, Landry and Krosby make their home in Wiota, Iowa and have a show cattle and show pig operation. They continue the tradition of Studer Shorthorns with cows in their own herd. They have an annual Fall Sale each September. Kaisha, Chad, Drew, Cayson, Camydyn and Caylor live in Des Moines, Iowa and stay active with traveling and

shorthorn country = december 2018

attending sporting events with their kids. Austin and Nicki currently live in Ankeny, Iowa and Austin works for Dow/ DuPont. Sarah is the youngest and lives in Des Moines, Iowa with her daughter Finley and is a Labor and Delivery Nurse at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines. Austin and Sarah continue to maintain cows of their own in the main cowherd. The fifth generation of kids (Kyser, Brock, Cayson and Landry) are starting to be active on the farm and will continue to carry on the legacy of Studer Shorthorns. While the Studer family hasn’t been as active in the show ring recently, they still do attend a few shows. One of those being the Minnesota State Fair; where they were named Champion Female this year. The Minnesota State Fair was Ben’s favorite show to attend. As the grandkids get older, you can expect to see them showing more often at junior shows! Studer Shorthorns have received many recognitions over the years, including being named Builder of the Breed twice. Once in 1969 with grandfather, Ben, and again in 2000 with the Dale Studer Family. They have also been honored as Iowa Seedstock Producer of the year in 2010 and the Iowa Royal honored breeder in 2001. They are honored to receive this recognition and be named as the American Royal Livestock Show Honoree. =

= Junior Corner Good vs. Great Wow… the quality of Shorthorns at the 2018 Kansas City American Royal was the best I’ve ever seen. I have never been so proud of this breed and it was an immense honor to show in classes that ran that deep. The quality of Shorthorn cattle is rising rapidly. Quality AND quantity was up this year! We went from 79 head to 138 head! Our show almost doubled in size, had high quality from top to bottom and earned twice as much respect. Talking to my dad, ASA VicePresident Rick Leone, discussing which bulls we would breed to this winter, and contemplating what we could do better to catch those banners, I realized something. Every year, my family’s cattle get better. But I can’t say that we were any more competitive this year then we were in previous years at the Royal; and I’ll tell you why. We are improving our cattle, but the entire breed is improving just as quickly and just as much. This realization is such a tremendous award, for lack of a better word; because in a way, it is a reward. With my dad on the ASA board and myself on the AJSA board, it is obvious the amount of drive

Gabriella ajsa Leone director

and passion we have for this great breed. I am so honored to be a part of this community in the beef industry and so proud of the innovative improvement we are making; turning good into great. I hope to see everyone at the National Western Stock Show next month with their Shorthorns ready to further prove the quality of this breed! Remember to bring a jacket, or a couple! The pen show will be Saturday, January 19th; and this is a great opportunity to check out the next sires that will lead the Shorthorn breed. On the 20th and 21st, we begin the Junior and Open shows on the Hill. You don’t want to miss the historic National Shorthorn Sale ‘The Summit’, at 6:00 pm on Sunday, January 20. Shorthorn cattle have become one of the most versatile breeds. The ShorthornPlus show is exploding in numbers, to prove it. The rib and muscle shape this breed puts into a good one is catching all the banners. If you want docile, feed efficient, good grading cattle, Shorthorn is the answer for you. But talk about versatile, you’ll see the best ones under the spotlight in the ring turn into practical cows at home turned

out on pasture. And that right there is the goal at the end of the day. Please keep up the work and improvement that everyone, including myself, is seeing when we send classes into the ring! We can always make the best better. A good cattleman has high quality cattle; a great cattleman has higher quality cattle every year. =
