He is always there to encourage, teach and ultimately influence the paths of each and every junior he comes in contact with. He always makes it a point to give anyone he talks with his full attention and always greets each of them with a firm handshake and a tip of his hat. His love for Shorthorn is evident as well as his passion for helping the youth and the future of the breed. =

2013 North American International Livestock Exposition

Presentation of the Jack Ragsdale award: This year the show was dedicated to longtime Shorthorn enthusiast and NAILE supporter Jack Ragsdale. The Shorthorn show will be named this indefinitely. John C. (Jack) Ragsdale was born in Indianapolis, Ind. He graduated from Purdue University with a degree in Animal Science, then known as Animal Husbandry. He married Ruth Anne, and, by the time you read this they will have been married 66 years. They had three children, David, Carolyn and Mary Catherine. Jack was one of the co-founders of the North American International Livestock Exposition and has been Chairman of the exposition’s Executive Committee since the beginning, now 40 expos ago. His charismatic personality, passion for the entire livestock industry and recognition as a great livestock breeder and "stockman" ideally suited him to lead this group. This board started with five breeds; Shorthorn, Angus, Charolais, Horned Herefords and Polled Herefords. Sheep was the next species to be added, followed by Dairy, on to nine species showing at NAILE today. The NAILE has grown to be one of the largest, all-breed, purebred livestock shows in the World and has exhibitors participating from 48 states and Canada. When asked why Kentucky was the right choice to continue on, yet start a new tradition when the end came for the infamous Chicago International Livestock Exposition, he said “Because we had and still have one of the best facilities in the country. And the fact that from the show in Chicago and even now the largest entries come from Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, and Kentucky so it was probably one of the most centrally located with those things considered.”

NAILE knew that eventually the Intercollegiate Livestock Judging contest was a must during this event. Jack himself broke a record when he scored 956 points and won High Individual at the Chicago International Livestock Judging Contest in 1948. The highest point total recorded up to that point which wasn’t broken until nearly 20 years later by another graduate from Purdue University. Through his career as you can imagine he has judged a countless number of shows. Jack couldn’t name a favorite but got quite the thrill out of judging the World Shorthorn Show in Argentina and was able to participate in the conference as well. Over 57 years ago Ragsdale was hired by the Brown’s of Sutherland Farms in Prospect, Ky. The first Shorthorns arrived at the farm when George Garvin Brown’s wife, Trudie, wanted some Shorthorns. She bought two for George as a Christmas gift when he came home from the war. Jack continued to work for them for 33 years and under his leadership established Sutherland Farms as one of the premier breeding centers of Polled Shorthorns in North America, if not the world. Then, after some of the land was sold and developed, Jack rented three of the farms himself and eventually moved the cattle to one farm. When Jack retired his son David took over. “David is an excellent cattleman, one of the best I know,” Jack said. He went on to say what excellent help his wife Ruth Anne was. “She was always in charge of the food, entertaining at the sales, among so many other things. I couldn’t have done it without her.”

When asked what Shorthorn animals he felt were the most influential or memorable for him. He said “That is easy; I even carry a picture of him in my wallet today from the National Western. It was Mill Brook Ransom G9. The first year his progeny could show, he sired the first two Gets of Sires and all were first prize winners at the National Western Stock Show. Sutherland Nugget is another one, very popular bull who sired the Denver Champion Sutherland Citation, National Show Champion and International Show Champion, Sutherland Prospector all in the same year.” A few years ago, Jack was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease. It might have slowed him down but hasn’t stopped him. He still remains Chairman of the Executive Committee and has only missed one NAILE as he was in the hospital. That year, he made the nurses help him with a laptop and internet and watched the show live from his hospital bed. Ragsdale has also been inducted to the prestigious Saddle and Sirloin Portrait Gallery, which consists of over 350 agricultural leaders who are among the best in the livestock industry. On November 18, 2013 the Shorthorn show at the North American was dedicated to Jack and will be named indefinitely the North American International Livestock Expo Jack C. This year’s event had a special meaning as the show was dedicated to longtime Shorthorn enthusiast and NAILE supporter Jack Ragsdale of Prospect, Ky. Serving as judge for the Jack Ragsdale East Major PACE Show was Kevin Jensen, of Courtland, Kan.

It is no coincidence that three of the top spring born bulls at JSF are either sons or grandsons of 68K. Her last years Gauge heifer calf sold at the top of Durham Nation 2012. We have retained every daughter since, both natural and ET. 68K is a huge middled, powerful cow with great balance and eye appeal, not to mention a remote pedigree. Her production with limited flushing has been outstanding. Her daughters and their production are a further testament to her value. The annual Shorthorn Steer Futurity and Breeder’s Cup Show was held on November 17, 2013, in Louisville, Ky. This year all the steers were ultrasounded and ranked according to their scan data for the carcass competition. Longtime Shorthorn breeder Taylor Schwartz of Roseville, Ill., had the opportunity to sort through a high quality set of sixteen purebred steers and five ShorthornPlus steers in the onfoot portion of the show. Reflection and Change As I am writing this, Christmas time is rapidly approaching. This is a very hectic time of the year as school semesters are finishing up, which means that finals are also here. It is very easy to get caught up in the day to day activities and not take the time to really reflect on things. With the New Year on its way, this is the perfect time to take a minute and really think about what can be learned from the past yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s experiences and how we can use that to accomplish the goals that we have for the upcoming year. For me, the upcoming year will mean my term on the Junior Board and my junior show career will be coming to a close, which did not really hit me until I sat down to write this article. The change in my life that the upcoming year will bring is

hard to understate. The many life lessons that I have been taught by serving on the Junior Board and showing cattle, have really shaped me into the person that I am today. Although it is a little scary to think that I will be done with these this year, the change will not be a bad thing. Reflecting on the experiences that I have had only made me realize that I am even more excited to see what these changes will bring for me in the future. Change is something that everyone is scared of at first; however change is what makes both people and organizations better. Without change, we get comfortable in a routine and it becomes hard for us to make ourselves better. Even if some changes do not make you better in the short run the

experiences and the lessons that the changes bring are what make us better in the future. There have been many changes that have taken place in our association over the past year. While we do not immediately know how they will work out. I am confident that we will be better in the long run if not simply from the experience that we will gain from them and from the fact that we are making an effort to change to better ourselves. Change is the driving factor in innovation. Therefore, while I am a bit sad that this will be my final year as junior member and on the Junior Board, I am excited to see the new opportunities that the changes will bring. =

=Board Meeting Minutes ASA November Board Meeting Minutes Minutes for the American Shorthorn Association Board Meeting held November 15, 2013 in Louisville, KY Board members in attendance; president Les Mathers, vice president, Mike Bennett, Billy Zack Taylor, Lynn Nelson, Marty Loving, Ed Kruse, Jim Freed and executive, Montie Soules. President, Les Mathers called the meeting to order at 1:20 PM. Minutes from the September 7, 8, and 9 meeting were read and approved. Goals and Key Performance Indicators were discussed and reviewed. Transfers for July - October 2013 were considerably lower than the previous year; registrations for the same period were up a little. An explanation of the new financial system of 3 separate accounts for ASA and AJSA and the Junior National were described by Montie Soules. The financial report was approved by the board Following up from the September meeting, the staff had two new show format options for the show committee and board to review. The show committee recommended Option 1, which would have two national shows (Louisville and Denver) and 5 regions that would have 3 regional shows each year plus a regional show bull and show heifer of the year would be awarded for each region. The board approved to accept the show committeeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s recommendation for the Option 1 show format. The motion passed unanimously. There was further discussion about the point system for the new show format. The committee suggested doubling the points for champions and adding a national show bull and heifer of the year award. The show committee also suggested changing the rulings for the Best 6 Head to be by one prefix instead of all owned by. The board discussed these topics and would like to hear the show committeeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s reasons before acting on these topics. The board asked the show committee to have a conference call so board members can listen to the reasons before making a final decision. A conference call is to be set up for the show committee and board before the Denver meeting. The board reviewed the suggestions for judges for 2014 Junior National shows and the two National shows in

Louisville, 2014 and Denver, 2015. The Board unanimously approved the judges for these shows. At the request of Junior Task Force Committee chairman, Boyd Strope the board appointed Darla Aegerter as cochairman of the Junior Task Force Committee. A review was given to the board concerning the issues of how the registry system can handle new changes and possible future rule changes. A discussion ensued concerning the Digital Subluxation (DS) test and its availability. At this time there is not a commercial test for DS done by an approved ASA lab available to breeders. The board approved moving the start date to 1/1/2015 for the September ruling concerning not registering affected DS animals (Homozygote) or calves resulting from a sire and a dam that are both DS carriers, unless the calf is tested DS free. The motion passed unanimously. The board discussed the ruling done in September requiring breeders be a WHR breeder in order to have EPDs as of 1/1/2015. It was determined that more education and information about WHR and how performance data is handled by ASA was needed for the membership. Montie Soules will get this underway after the first of the year. The board discussed how the percentage is figured for animals that are registered as ShorthornPlus. The issue is when a purebred or 15/16 is bred or mated to a lower percentage. The purebred is handled as a 100% if the purebred is asterisk free. The purebred 15/16 or higher with an asterisk is considered and used at their true percentage when mated to a lower percentage animal. There has been confusion on this with membership. Most members think that a purebred 15/16 is considered 100% or a whole when figuring percentage when mated to a lower percentage animal. Many members do not understand the difference between the asterisk and asterisk free animals as how they are handled for registering calves from a lower percentage animal. The board approved to change the blood chart to handle all purebred animals the same and figure any purebred 15/16 or higher at 100% or as 1 when mated to a lower percentage. There will no longer be a distinction

between asterisk and asterisk free cattle. The motion passed unanimously. The board discussed the issue needed by the registry of when and how to start recording the actual percentage of Black ShorthornPlus cattle. The system needed a birth date start date and could not use the date of registration. The board approved to use the birth date 1/1/2013 as the start date for black ShorthornPlus animals to be recorded with their true percentage. The motion passed unanimously. The system will show this in the registry when it is programmed. Breeders wishing a new paper with the updated information can send in the old paper and request a new one to be issued. If the animal is transferred at a later date, the percentage will change on the new paper if you retain the older paper. A budget for each entity in the ASA was reviewed in detail by line item for the ASA, AJSA and Junior National accounts. The board asked for a bullet explanation to accompany future financials and budgets. The board approved the budgets for all three entities, ASA, AJSA and Junior National. The job opening for the Communications and Marketing at ASA was discussed. The board approved the executive to proceed in filling the position. The issue of the IT support for the office was discussed. Possible future issues with the current hardware and email exchange is a problem. The IT support personnel may need to be updated to a company that would give more options and higher level of service. The board approved the executive to proceed at his discretion with this possible change after having an attorney review the existing IT agreement and getting references on the selected possible new IT support personnel. The motion passed unanimously. The board discussed the issue of allowing only 4 characters as a registered prefix. There had been requests for more spaces for a prefix of a farm or ranch. The issue is that only 25 spaces or characters are allowed in the name of an animal. If a longer prefix is used the space allotted for the name becomes shorter.

The board approved to increase the spaces or characters for a registered prefix. The prefix must be a continuous string of characters and not have any blank spaces. If a prefix is two words, a hyphen or underscore should be inserted to avoid duplicates. The number of characters in a prefix is not limited. The breeder should be aware that they can only use 25 spaces or characters in the name of the animal. The motion passed unanimously. There was discussion about the Annual Meeting in Denver. The committees will meet after the Annual Meeting for organization and conference call agendas. It was discussed to possibly having a realignment of committees starting for 2014 after the Annual Meeting. Montie informed the board that Steve Radakovich would be the guest speaker at the Annual Meeting. The board went into executive session. The meeting was adjourned after the executive session. =

Farewell Tribute Warren D. Lakamp, 86, of rural Jacksonville, Illinois died Thursday, October 17, 2013, at Jacksonville Skilled Nursing and Rehab. He was born Dec. 20, 1926, in Jacksonville, the son of Fred and Anna Nergenah Lakamp. He married Phyllis J. Goodall on Feb. 24, 1950, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church near Chapin and she preceded him in death on Apr. 11, 2010. He is survived by his son, Roger (wife, Mary) Lakamp of Chapin; his daughter, Cindy (husband, Gerry) Gotschall of Jacksonville; four grandchildren, Brian (wife, Susie) Gotschall of St. Louis, Mariah (husband, Joe) Faivre of Edelstein, Gus (wife, Kelsey) Lakamp of Des Plaines and Wes Gotschall of Ballwin, MO; two great-granddaughters, Emelyn and Anna Faivre; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his sister, Maxine Rahe (surviving husband, Vernon of Bluffs). Mr. Lakamp was a 1944 graduate of Chapin High School and was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Army,

serving from 1945-1946. He was a former leader of the Victory Ag 4-H Club and volunteered many years at the Morgan County Fair. He was a member of the Chapin American Legion, Western Illinois Tractor Club, TriCounty Shorthorn Association and was a lifetime member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church. Warren farmed and raised purebred Shorthorn Cattle on the family centennial farm. He had the privilege to go on a Land of Lincoln Honor Flight for WWII veterans in June of 2011.

Dr. Tom Turner, Professor Emeritus of The Ohio State University, recently returned from New Zealand where he judged the beef cattle at the Canterbury A&P Show. This is the largest livestock show in New Zealand and Dr. Turner judged cattle over a three day period. He also conducted a judging contest for the senior youth including oral reasons. After the show, Dr. Turner, accompanied by his wife Susie, traveled for several days visiting herds of Angus, Charolais, Shorthorn and Hereford cattle. =
