indicated. Just like the student when all we had was a report card for kindergarten. Breeders that make reference to a calf that did not measure up to the sire’s data need to understand first, that the dam gave 50% of the genetics to the package. If the dam has a higher accuracy and the selected sire has similar data the odds of having a calf that fits the documentation are higher. If a bull is +50 for a trait and a cow is +0 (zero), not every calf will be a +25. However, over time with the same selection criteria, the mating should produce calves that AVERAGE +25. If a student gets a “C” in junior high English, he is not doomed to get C’s in English through high school and college. He could improve or flunk out. EPDs require that you ‘stay in school’ in order to be effective. The EPD lets us measure single traits compared to other animals in the population. The more data, the more accurate we are in estimating the average performance of the resulting

progeny. We can measure that with the accuracy of the EPD. Next time we will wrap up the WHR reporting and take a look at our competition and how other breeds are using data to promote their breeds and breed acceptance. =

it even more important to get every piece of data possible to raise the accuracy level for each individual. You hear about polling in our political world with a plus or minus for error. It is nothing more than taking a small portion of the total population and having an estimate of the results with a percent of error plus or minus. They cannot tell you it is totally accurate because they do not have all the data. How does the accuracy work? Let’s use the student example and compare the student’s GPA (EPD) accuracy for predicting his grades in school. If we are trying to estimate how a student (bull) will perform in class as a senior, we can do a pretty good job of estimating his grades if we know his report card from the time he started kindergarten. This data would make high percentage accuracy to the GPA (EPD) prediction. If all we have is his kindergarten report card, predicting his skills in high school it is really difficult to be real accurate in predicting his (bull) grades. This would be identified with a very low GPA (EPD) accuracy percentage to predict the grades of this student as a senior. Always understand the student (bull) can get an F or an A at any time through school because the data is an average or GPA (EPD) of all his grades. This is why it is important to use higher accuracy sires when making breeding decisions. Still, we must continue to test young bulls and see how they fall or change in their EPD profile. We should be aware that when we use these young bulls with low accuracies there is a risk that a higher percentage will not perform as

Denver National Western Stock Show Dedication by Megan Breham

The American Shorthorn Association honored longtime Shorthorn breeder George Alden by naming the 2014 National Shorthorn Show in his honor. Alden is a lifelong breeder of Shorthorn cattle, Builder of the Breed Award recipient, and former American Shorthorn Association Board member. George is well known for his enthusiasm in promoting the breed as well as incorporating genetics from around the world to produce superior Shorthorn cattle. 1977, 1978, and 1979 would be historical years for not only Alden Farms, but the entire Shorthorn breed. It was evident the breed needed new genetics to cross with the popular dual purpose cattle of the time. George’s foresight and willingness to take a risk resulted in the purchase of ten full Irish females from Beef

Genetics Research of Mankato, Kan., the most notable cow in this group was a solid red cow named Shannon Margie. At the time, these females were only registered in the Appendix program and were so different, not all Shorthorn breeders were as enthusiastic as George about their potential. These females formed the nucleus of the Alden Farms herd and helped catapult the AF prefix into the national and international spotlight. Notable females produced at Alden Farms include AF Shannon Margie 924, the 1979 National Junior Heifer Show Champion and National Champion Female at the National Western in 1981 and AF Margie’s Dream Girl, winner of the 1985 National Show and the World Shorthorn Show in 1984. AF Margie’s

Fantasy Girl, AF Margie’s Dream Lady and many others have been AllAmericans and major show winners. Still today, breeders from across the nation promote females with the Margie, Dream Girl, and Dream Lady name. George and his family are very proud that these genetics started in Hamilton, Mo. The search to find a bull that would impact the breed ended in 1979, again at Beef Genetics Research. George and his two sons arranged for the purchase of two full Irish bulls Deerpark Leader 13th and Deerpark Improver. These two bulls would mold the Shorthorn breed for years to come. Deerpark Leader 13th was a four time sire of the year and can still be found in the pedigrees of top cattle today. “It is certainly an honor to have the national show named in my honor. As a third generation Shorthorn breeder, the breed means a tremendous amount to my family and I,” stated Alden in a recent interview, “It still amazes me that the genetics we brought to the breed so many years ago continue to make such an impact on the breed today.” George and his wife Janice live on a farm near Hamilton, Mo. They have been blessed with seven grandchildren and four great grandchildren. Great grandchildren, Emitt and Adalynn will continue the family tradition of Shorthorn breeders in the family. =

19, 2014. Each year, an individual is selected by fellow Shorthorn breeders as Herdsman of the Year. The recipient is honored with a trophy belt buckle in honor of Lawrence Grathwohl. Stump has been the herdsman at Fischer Cattle Company, of Great Bend, Kansas for 10 years. Stump is involved in all aspects of the operation ranging from calving to show-day preparations. Fischer Cattle Company strives to breed high functioning cattle that are competitive in the show ring, yet are equally valuable as breeding tools for their customers. Fischer Cattle Company notes that since Jeff ’s involvement in their operation, numbers of Shorthorn cattle have increased along with their quality. Donation Michigan Shorthorn Breeders Association President Tara Miller and Board Member Steve French presented a donation of $10,000.00 to The Shorthorn Foundation's newly formed Youth Development Fund during the 2013 ASA Annual Meeting in Denver. American Shorthorn Association members made their way to Denver, Colo., to participate in the association’s annual meeting held in conjunction with the National Western Stock Show on January 18, 2014. The highlight of the evening was the election of a new association President, Vice-President, and three Board of Director members. Elected as President of the American Shorthorn Association for 2014 was Mike Bennett of Ducor, Calif. Bennett operates a purebred Shorthorn Cattle operation, Bennett Land and Cattle. The Bennett ranch is located in southcentral California near the base of the Sierra Nevada mountain range. Bennett brings a lifetime of experience in the cattle industry to the board as president. When asked what his major

goals are for the year, he was very straightforward; to direct more cattlemen to the Shorthorn breed. “As President, my major objective is to work hard to make Shorthorn cattle an integral part of the beef industry. By implementing more and more genetic tools to collect data, we can improve our breed and help cattlemen choose the Shorthorn breed.” Mark Gordon, Middletown, Ill., will serve the board as Vice-President this year. Gordon, along with his family operates Rockin’ G Land & Cattle, a purebred Shorthorn herd in central Illinois. In addition to his work at his cattle operation, Gordon is the manager of Croft Fertilizer Service, Inc. Montie Soules, Executive

Shorthorn festivities at the National Western Stock Show kicked off Saturday morning with the National Pen Bull and Heifer Shows. Marty Ropp of Normal, Ill. had the opportunity to sort through 17 high quality sets of Shorthorn and ShorthornPlus pens of bulls and heifers. In the biggest division of the day Jungels Shorthorn Farms of Kathryn, ND., claimed the Champion Pen of Three Shorthorn Bulls. This pen of Leveldale Righteous 084 ET and FSF Jazz Leader 918 ET sons posted an average weight of 1,429 lbs. and an average IMF score of 4.37. Waukaru Polled Shorthorns of Rensselaer, Ind., were named the Reserve Champion Pen of Three Shorthorn Bulls. These outstanding high growth individuals were all sired by Waukaru Patent 8161 ET and posted an average weight per day of age of 3.50 lbs. NOTES TO CONSOLIDATED FINANCIAL STATEMENTS • YEARS ENDED JUNE 30, 2013 AND 2012 NOTE A - NATURE OF OPERATIONS The Association is organized as a non-stock, non-profit corporation and is not subject to local property or income tax. Its primary function is to record and register Shorthorn cattle and to improve the breedlines throughout the world. The Association’s wholly-owned subsidiary, Shorthorn Publications, Inc. has been consolidated in the accompanying financial statements. NOTE B - SUMMARY OF SIGNIFICANT ACCOUNTING POLICIES Basis of Presentation - The accompanying financial statements have been prepared on the accrual basis of accounting in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles. Net assets and revenues, expenses, gains and losses are classified based on the existence of absence of donor-imposed restrictions. Accordingly, net assets of the Association and changed therein are classified and reported as follows: Unrestricted net assets - Net assets that are not subject to donor-imposed stipulations. Cash and Cash Equivalents - The Association considers all highly liquid investments with an original maturity of three months or less to be cash equivalents. Inventory and Supplies - Inventory of supplies and items for resale are carried at cost (first-in, first-out), which is not in excess of market value. Property - Depreciation is computed using the straight-line method over the estimated useful lives of the related depreciable assets as follows: 40 years Building Furniture and office equipment 3-7 years Vehicles 5 years Maintenance - repairs and renewals which neither materially add to the value of the property and equipment nor appreciably prolong its life are charged to expense as incurred. Gains or losses on dispositions of property and equipment are included in income. Income Taxes - The Association’s operation is tax exempt under Section 501(c)(5) of the Internal Revenue Code and accordingly, the financial statements do not reflect a provision for income taxes. The Association has adopted the provision of FASB ASC 740-10-50 effective July 1, 2009. The Association’s tax returns for the years ended June 30, 2010 through 2013 are subject to audit by the Internal Revenue Service. Management believes that they have not entered into any transactions that either result in unrelated business income or jeopardize their tax-exempt status. Use of Estimates - The preparation of financial statements in conformity with generally accepted accounting principles requires management to make estimates and assumptions that affect the reported amounts of assets and liabilities and disclosures of contingent assets and liabilities at the date of the financial statements and the reported amounts of revenues and expenses during the reporting period. Actual results could differ from those estimates. Accounts Receivable - Accounts receivable are recorded when invoices are issued and are presented in the balance sheet net of any allowance for doubtful accounts. Accounts receivable are written off when they are determined to be uncollectible. The allowance for doubtful accounts is estimated based on the Association’s historical losses, the existing economic conditions, and the financial stability of its members. Most of the Association’s business activity is with its members in the cattle industry. Consequently, the Association’s ability to collect its receivables is affected by economic conditions in that industry. Advertising Costs - Advertising costs (other than direct-response advertising costs) are charged to expense when incurred. The Company has not incurred any direct-response advertising costs, which are capitalized and amortized over the period during which future benefits are expected. Consolidation Policy - The accompanying consolidated financial statements include the accounts of the Association and its whollyowned subsidiary. Inter-company transactions and balances have been eliminated in the consolidation. NOTE C - PUBLICATION AGREEMENT Durham Management, Inc. has the responsibility for operating and for meeting subscription obligations of Shorthorn Publications, Inc., (a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Association) under a lease agreement with the Association. Under this lease agreement, Durham pays $1,000 a month to the American Shorthorn Association for rent. In addition, Durham also reimbursed the American Shorthorn Association for various shared administrative services. NOTE D - DEFERRED REVENUE At June 30, 2013, the Association had received funds in advance for programs to be conducted subsequent to year end. These funds include $28,583 from the Leading a Legacy program and $20,010 from the Funding the Future initiative. These funds will be utilized by the various activities of the Junior National and Junior programs and will be recorded as revenue during the 2013-2014 fiscal year. NOTE E - COMMITMENTS The Association has entered into operating leases, expiring through April, 2018 for use of office equipment. Total lease payments for the years ended June 30, 2013 and 2012 were approximately $12,314 and $12,076, respectively. The minimum lease commitments are as follows for the years ending June 30: 2014 3,852 2015 3,852 2016 3,852 2017 2,457 2018 1,660 $15,673 NOTE F - RETIREMENT PLAN Effective January 1, 2003, the Association established a savings incentive match plan for employees (SIMPLE Plan) and terminated their existing defined contribution plan. The SIMPLE Plan allows employess to make elective contributions and requires the Association to make matching or nonelective contributions, The Association’s contribution to retirement plans totaled $11,316 and $11,535 for the years ended June 30, 2013 and 2012, respectively. NOTE G - ADVERTISING COSTS Advertising expense totaled $26,917 and $13,977 for the years ended June 30, 2013 and 2012, respectively. NOTE H - SUBSEQUENT EVENTS Management evaluated transactions and events occurring subsequent to June 30, 2013 and through September 16, 2013 (the date the financial statements were available to be issued) to determine whether any events should be recognized or disclosed in these statements. There were no material transactions or events in the subsequent period requiring disclosure or recognition in the statements.

A big crowd gathered on sale day from across the United States to view a tremendous set of Shorthorn and Shorthorn Plus bulls that represent the best from the Jungels program with an emphasis on calving ease traits. The auction saw very active bidding from those in attendance and those on the phones and the internet. When the smoke cleared, bulls sold to 16 states in the US as well as two Canadian provinces. There were 22 bulls that sold at $5,000 or more with 18 of those at $7,000 and up. Great acceptance for a top quality set of bulls as is always presented by the Jungels firm. $40,000 - Lot 28 - PB Bull - JSF Hot Wire 70A. =New & Notes Joyce A. (Mrs. Charles) Duffy, 83, of rural Solon, passed away at home on January 28, 2014. Joyce enjoyed a lifetime of accomplishments in banking, agriculture, the natural environment, government, art and public service. Joyce and her husband, Charles Duffy, former Johnson County supervisor, met as Iowa City High School sweethearts and began married life in bank management at Iowa City's First National Bank before purchasing her ancestral Kasper estate in rural Solon. Together they raised nationallyrespected award-winning purebred Shorthorns, Tamworths and Plymouth Rocks and supplied commodities to the University of Iowa Food Service. Charley and Joyce were honored as Kiwanis Outstanding Farm Couple and the Winter Beef Expo Iowa Royal was dedicated to them. They enjoyed 63 years of marriage. Charles passed away in February 2011. Joyce worked as Johnson County Elections board official and as director for Ecumenical Towers, Farm Bureau, County Action committees, 4-H and FFA Fair, Bill Reilly Talent Shows, Iowa Shorthorn Lassies Association, Iowa City Catholic School Board and Johnson County's original Health Council. She was a Girl Scout leader and Youth Achievement Show judge

and also volunteered for St. Wenceslaus Church, Regina High, Johnson County Historical Society, Eagles, Knights and Moose Club activities, and at the University of Iowa athletic events. As an accomplished artist, Joyce exhibited oil paintings at Iowa City's Recreation Center and Senior Center, and taught and judged art and floral design. She was a superb seamstress and designed costumes for area dance studios, school and community stage productions, and club events. Joyce was uniquely comfortable among people of all professions and enjoyed annual Amana Golf visits with Joe Garagiolla and Glenn Campbell; entertaining Bruce Babbitt, Mike McCurry, and John Glenn in her home; and hosting state cattlemen field days and international media film crews on her farm. She appeared on CBS Morning News, and also enjoyed international travel with Charles and annual Washington, D.C., visits. Joyce is survived by her son, Charles J. "Chuck" Duffy; and daughters, Bonnie Bradley, Patricia desJardins, Beth Duffy and Lora (John) Danker; seven grandchildren; 15 greatgrandchildren; and her sister, Jean Kasper. Sharon J. Parlier, 75, of Virginia, IL died Tuesday, February 4, 2014 at her residence. She was born August 17, 1938 in Rushville, Ill., the daughter of J. Dwayne and Wilma K. Gaddis Long. She is survived by a son, David Parlier of Gainesville, Texas, and a companion, Gene McDonald of Virginia. She was preceded in death by her parents. Sharon was a graduate of Rushville High School and was employed five years as a bus driver for Virginia School District. She later worked for the Illinois Secretary of State for 35 years, retiring as a supervisor. She was a devoted volunteer and past chairman of the Virginia BBQ and enjoyed her volunteer work with the Cass County Food Pantry. Memorial gifts are suggested to the Cass County Food Pantry. In addition to industry experiences gained as a cattle producer, Brehm brings a wealth of knowledge to the position gained while at Slagle Communications, a private

agricultural communications and marketing contracting service in Brock, Neb. “I am sincerely honored to take this position at the American Shorthorn Association,” Brehm commented, “The Shorthorn breed has so much to give the beef cattle industry; I am thrilled to be in a position where I will be able to promote this great breed of cattle at a national level.” Montie Soules, Executive Secretary/CEO of the American Shorthorn Association, when asked for comment, noted that the association is “very fortunate to have someone like Megan as a part of the

Shorthorn team. Her passion for agriculture and history with the breed will be a tremendous asset.” Brehm is a native of Talmage, Nebraska, where her family owns a Vermeer Hay Equipment dealership, farms, and operates a small Shorthorn based cattle herd. Brehm holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Peru State College in History with a concentration in Business Marketing. She resides with her husband Randall, and daughter Lauren on their farm near Syracuse, Neb. =
