The Board of Directors took some time to review the 90-day past-due policy. After seeing an increase in overdue accounts, a policy change was enacted, which brought about another change regarding membership renewals.

First (as of January 1, 2024): Any past due balance over 60 days will automatically put an account onhold until the full account balance has been paid. As a reminder, this will restrict online access to only being able to pay that balance, as well as no printing of any registration papers is permitted when there is a balance due.

Second (effective immediately): Due to the increase in unpaid membership renewals, (i.e. breeders logging in and renewing their membership and not making payment) membership renewals must be paid at the time of renewal in order to gain online/ member access for that calendar year. If a breeder logs in, agrees to renew the membership but then does not pay simultaneously, said membership renewal will be made null and void and deleted the next day.

WHR Breeders

WHR Assessments for 2024 were sent in November.

1. WHR inventory assessments must be completed and paid in full prior to registering calves born in the current assessment period, (i.e. 2024 assessment on a dam must be completed and paid in order to register her calf born in 2024.)

2. Included with each assessment is the registration of a calf born to the dam in the year she was assessed (if calf is registered prior to one year of age) and a free transfer of said calf (if recorded within 60 days from the date of the sale.) (i.e. cost to register a calf born in 2024 to an assessed 2024 dam will be $0, if calf is registered within 12 months)

2024 ASSESSMENT FEE SCHEDULE:

January 10 - February 29, 2024 $24 March 1, 2024 and after $30

*Calves born in previous year(s) to unassessed dams will incur additional fees.

Send DNA Directly to Neogen

As a reminder, breeders can now send DNA samples directly to Neogen for testing rather than sending to the ASA office first. Starting July 1, 2023, a manual processing fee will be incurred for those samples sent to the office for preprocessing.

3 things will be required to send samples in for testing:

1. A registration (or recorded “U”) number for each tested animal

2. A paper copy of the finalized testing form, (emailed from staff, description below) which includes the Neogen order number

3. A barcode number for each animal tested

Attention Juniors!

• Junior members 7 years of age are eligible to show at the Junior National. The Junior member has to be 7 on January 1 of the year the Junior National is taking place to be eligible to show at the Junior National. For example, if a child turned 7 on December 31, 2023 they are eligible to show at the 2024 National Junior Show in Maryland. If they turned 7 on January 10, 2024, they are NOT eligible to show at this year’s Junior National.

• Junior members who turned 22 in 2023, your Junior Membership was good through December 31, 2023. To stay a member, you must pay the yearly adult membership fee. All memberships converted from Junior to Adult will become WHR Breeders.

Breeders can queue up animals for testing in DigitalBeef and select which sample types they have, as well as which tests they want. Once the form is submitted, (it’s not entirely an automated process) staff will process the testing request and get an order ID # from Neogen. A finalized printable PDF of the submission form will be emailed to print and send to the lab with samples. Checks/payments are still made to the ASA. Once staff approves the testing request, the breeder’s DigitalBeef account is billed accordingly.

It is a Marathon

This year has already been exciting and hectic, the first couple of months in 2024 has been fast paced in the office. I sat down to write this article in early February, so my January activities are fresh in my mind. Speaking of exciting - we have a surprise for some of you - Shelby and Seth have a new baby boy, Stetson, who was born in early January. Congratulations to them and welcome to the world Stetson! We’ll miss Shelby while she’s on maternity leave.

The office and staff have been at full speed since January 1st. Those of you who attend the national shows understand the commitment of time and energy to be at those events. We at the Association have a similar process in preparing for each show and sometimes it feels like we’re running a marathon.

To share a little bit of the planning our staff does for shows and events, first off if a hotel is involved, a block of rooms is reserved for members which must be thought out and arrangements made almost a full year in advance of the activity. Then there are show preparations: The show venue records and forwards the entries to our office – sometimes as soon as entries close or, most times we receive them just a few days before we leave for the show. Once we have that information in hand, we double-check the ownerships and entries to ensure there are no bogus entries and each one is in the proper class or classification as well as making sure each entry is registerted, ShorthornPlus cattle are the correct percentage and Cow/Calf pairs have a registered calf at side. Next, staff prepares the check-in books you see when checking in at the show - these are handmade and double-checked to avoid omitting anyone. The list of supplies, printers, computers, and the booth is then loaded into a rented cargo vehicle which is necessary to transport everything we need to the event. After check-in at the show, our ASA staff is responsible for developing show programs for each show and then compiling the programs into a booklet form to be printed. This can take time and usually runs late into the evening. In most

cases, a hard deadline is set for the programs to be delivered to a printer with a night crew who will drop other jobs and produce our programs in time for the first show, which is usually the next morning. Think about that - from the start of the check-in, the programs are compiled, proof-read and printed in less than 24 hours. This takes a lot of planning and work on behalf of the ASA crew. Remember, the Shorthorn breed has 4 shows to prepare for at each venue: a Junior Shorthorn Purebred Show, a ShorthornPlus Show, an Open Purebred Show and a ShorthornPlus Show when other breeds may only have one purebred show. And this year, in January the ASA Staff prepared for two shows within a 6-day window plus the additional two pen shows at Cattlemen’s Congress and at Denver and don’t forget the newly formed EDGE show. We get about a week off and then it’s off to Fort Worth and then Dixie National. So, it really is a marathon. Between Fort Worth and Dixie, we sent other staff to the NCBA Convention and Trade Show in Orlando, FL. With all this activity, I think we had 2 or 3 days in January and early February when all staff members were in Kansas City to work at the office. When staff are at shows and other events, it leaves only one and sometimes two people left at the office to take care of the association activity for you.

Those on the road do have access to email to help, but their main responsibility is to complete the tasks at that event. I know in some cases it has been difficult for some to reach the office when they want to. I am addressing all this to let you know what is going on at the ASA. If you send an email to info@shorthorn.org, you will likely receive a reply within 24 to 48 hours most times unless there is research that needs to be done to get your answer. Even my schedule has felt like a marathon of activity since the first of the year. I attended 3 stock shows in the first 14 days of January (a first for me in my lifetime) and then spent a week at the NCBA trade show. I have been out of pocket a lot more than I prefer. I hope things are getting back to normal if there is such a thing. Work

travel has slowed now so the office should be back to regular activity- at least until the next wave of travel arrives.

We launched our first E.D.G.E. show at Cattlemen’s Congress. The entry numbers were not large, but the event went very well, showcasing some cattle that may not consistently be recognized for their superior genetic contribution.

Cattlemen’s Congress and Denver results are reported in this issue. The numbers were strong, and the quality was top-notch at both events. We had excellent pen shows with over 25 total pens shown and the numbers for halter cattle stayed up and even doubled in Denver. It was a strong display of Shorthorn power.

I want to invite everyone to the Shorthorn Symposium in Lexington, Kentucky on July 18, 19 & 20. This program has a variety of areas addressed to help both purebred and commercial producers. The program will include some new studies and research that will help us all. Plus, there are socials at a bourbon distillery, a tour of a nationally known purebred herd and a visit to one of the prestigious horse breeding establishments. We can learn from many other business avenues that relate to what we do. This educational event will be a great time for fellowship, to meet old friends and make new friends in our breed and industry. Mark it on your calendar.

2024 has started off like a marathon. The Shorthorn breed and members are set to hold strong and keep the pace up and endure the long haul. Other breed executives and other breed individuals are noticing the activity and progress of our breed. Folks, people are looking at Shorthorns as an option, both for commercial and for show. Just look at the success of our Shorthorn bull sales this winter and spring. Look at the success of female sales and show heifer-type sales. We have new people entering our breed, and the momentum is keeping a fast pace. Stay the course! It is time for the Shorthorn breed to win the race!

Revisiting “Endless Possibilities”

Article topics are often hard for me to come by. That’s why when a good opportunity comes along, I better not let it slip by! In the days leading up to article deadline for this issue, I fielded variations of the same question several times: “Why do these full brother ET calves have differing EPDs?” If several breeders are willing to ask it, then there’s likely many more thinking it that I haven’t had the chance to talk with.

As I planned this article, I realized that back in my files there is already an article that covers this topic from a slightly different slant. So, I decided to re-print that article with some added information up here at the front of this piece.

The genetic phenomenon that causes these variations in full siblings is known as independent assortment. Across a cow or bull’s genome, the chromosomes separate from each other in various combinations when a sperm or egg cell is created, each cell getting one copy of each gene (whereas the cow and bull have two copies to give). With the number of chromosomes and genes a bovine has, there are literally millions upon millions of combinations of genetic material to create one sperm or egg.

When we genomic test an animal, we are looking at that genetic components to identify specific markers that have effects on traits in bovine performance. These markers have been identified through scientific research across the beef cattle population. Some markers are known to improve a specific trait, while others can hinder. There are multiple markers affecting these traits that we value and select for, so it’s not as simple as finding one marker and running with it.

For example, there is no one marker that has the answers for marbling. There are many markers in cattle DNA that impact the trait, both positively and

negatively. As their DNA is analyzed and seen which markers are present, then we can gather what type of genetic impact for marbling an animal carries. The same animal can have a positive impact on marbling at one location on the genome and have negative impacts at others. The cumulative impact is factored into the changes we see in genomically enhanced EPDs. This same process is utilized for all our traits: birth weight, weaning weight, ribeye, stayability, etc.

Below is the article originally printed in November 2022. With this information and the above commentary, hopefully you have a better grasp of why we can see such vast differences in full siblings. As maddening as it may be, it’s simply the wonderful world of genetics at work!

Endless Possibilities

Many of you were probably hoping to leave complex genetic talk behind when you walked out of that college classroom for the last time. As technology advances in the seedstock cattle industry, you may be having nightmare flashbacks to those genetics courses! Genomic testing and that technology come to mind as the prime example that makes many cattle breeders break out in a cold sweat.

While it is discussed at length the importance of genomics and utilizing the technology to enhance the accuracy of an animal’s EPDs, it’s a complicated concept to explain. Many of the brightest brains in our industry struggle with how to relay the technical information involved in genetic evaluation to a practical perspective. Instead of rambling on about the technicalities, perhaps a visual is the best teaching tool to demonstrate how utilizing genomics can help us better identify the true genetic values of our Shorthorn cattle. While this demonstration may overly

simplify the complex process, I call this a successful exercise if it helps you grasp it even a slight bit better.

In this illustration on the next page, we have a sire and dam who produced four full brothers. The colored bars constitute the genetic material of each animal, beginning with the grandparents of the four brothers. Since basic genetics teach us that any mammal inherits 50% of its genetic material from each parent, our sire and dam each have half their genetic material from one parent (thus one bar of each color). Now, when they are bred to each other, they will pass on 50% of their genetic material to each offspring. Of course, knowing which 50% they will pass on is the part that makes cattle breeding so challenging! In the four sons, each has 50% of their genetic material from the sire, and 50% from the dam. None of these four sons look much alike based on their genetic material. This occurs because of a process known as meiosis, which creates the reproductive cells of both the Sire and Dam. The genetic material of the parent is essentially split in half, creating reproductive cells that are not identical to each other. If you’ve ever wondered why your brother or sister was so different from you while having the same parents, meiosis is to blame!

Countless combinations of genetic material can be created thanks to the production of reproductive cells with meiosis. In this simplified exercise, there are MILLIONS of possible genetic combinations that can be made for one animal. Knowing that cattle have 30 pairs of chromosomes, imagine how many possible combinations can be made when sperm and egg meet! If we were to think about what economically relevant traits are controlled by genetics (all of them), the diagram gets even harder

to grasp. Is Son 1’s “yellow” genetic material the right pieces to make him a calving ease sire? Did Son 2 inherit the right combination of “blue” and “red” from his dam to provide extra growth to his calves? Does the combination of all genetics make Son 3 or Son 4 a better option to add carcass quality in their offspring?

How can we answer those questions? With genomic technology! When you take a sample and send it to ASA for genomic testing, that test is analyzing the genetic material of that animal to determine which material is there in their DNA. Through lots of research, geneticists have been able to identify certain genes or groups of genes that have specific effects on the various traits of importance. The genomic test looks at the genome of Son 1 and determine if he has the genetic material that positively influences calving ease, or if Son 2 inherited the right material from mom and dad to be a high growth bull. With that analysis of their genomes, the data gathered is applied to the traits that we have EPDs for, and that information is submitted to our weekly EPD runs. The data from the genomic tests are what influence the increase in accuracy and possible changes in a genomic tested animal’s EPD values.

We have been asked before if we are able to see and share the information that goes from the genomic test and into

the EPD calculations. That information isn’t shared with the ASA, so it is not something we can pass along for you (or us) to analyze. Just like you, we only see the results of the genomic test through the increased accuracies and possible changes in values on the animal’s genomically enhanced EPDs.

Cattle breeding has always been a bit

of an art form, but scientific concepts play a growing role in the craft. With the concept of genomics, identifying genetic material, and the vast number of genetic combinations, it’s ironic that artwork can help explain the scientific concept. Since cattle breeding is far from being black and white, it helps to add a little color sometimes.

We are excited to announce that we have added a member to our small crew! Carrie Land officially joined the American Shorthorn Association family this year, and the rest of the crew could not be more appreciative. Carrie’s main dedication is to customer service – which includes, but is not limited to help with registrations, transfers, assessments, and memberships. If you’ve called the office in 2024 on a Monday, Tuesday or Thursday chances are that you have spoken with Carrie. She currently works on a part-time basis, so keep that in mind if you’re wanting or needing her directly! Carrie’s bright personality and outward kindness are only a couple of qualities that queued us in to know she would be a perfect fit. Let’s give a warm welcome to Carrie Land, and hope that she is as excited to be here as we are to have her!

Since You Asked...

New Year, New Things

“Oh no, another article written by Heather?? That must mean there are fee increases” …. You may be thinking. Well, you are right. A commonality we have all been facing is inflation, and we all know that it has a trickledown effect. Our yearly contract renewal with the lab proved no exception. However, we decided to use the fee increases as an opportunity for simplicity. So, whereas I would usually try to find a cheeky way to say, ‘brace yourself’, I think this change has been a long time coming and will be helpful to us all. I’ll try to keep this article brief, so I will start by listing the items which have increased, followed by the items that have been done away with, and round it out with the new DNA pricing/order sheet.

Starting at the beginning is usually the logical place, and what do you need to start the DNA testing process? Blood or hair cards – if those are the methods you use, of course. This one is simple. The lab raised prices by $0.50 so that is what we did as well. Blood cards are now $1.50 each and hair cards are $2.50 each. Our AI Sire/Donor Dam package increased by $5, so it is now $85 – as a reminder, this includes the 100K genomic profile and parentage, TH, PHA and DS. Our known genetic condition bundle went up by $2, so it is now $50 and that is the TH, PHA and DS bundle. All stand-alone tests as well as add-ons were

increased by $2 – so those are now $29. As an example, if you want to test for TH and PHA only, this will cost you $58 versus utilizing the bundled price which also includes DS for $50.

We have also created a new bundle based on the increased number of submissions. Please note that this new bundle only applies to 100K tests. Myostatin and horned/polled, while also $29 each when tested individually have been bundled to a $35 package, again when requested in junction with the 100K. For example, if you want to test your bull as a Natural Service Sire (still the $55 test) you can choose to add both myostatin and horn/poll for an additional $35 (rather than 2 $29 fees –or $58, if you’re a math whiz like me). Similarly, if you want to run the AI Sire test on your bull for $85, you can add both myostatin and horn/poll for a total package price of $120.

You may have noticed that the only genomic test I have referenced is the 100K. That was not by mistake, as we have removed the 25K and 150K tests from our offered tests. A road that we are hesitant to go down is one that Neogen is ramping up. If you haven’t heard about InfiniSeek, it is Neogen’s newest offered testing that they are advertising as ‘the future’. It falls under the realm of sequencing, which is very exciting in terms of DNA advancements. We

have chosen to put it on the backburner though, until we can get more proven results in terms of our specific breed. More on that to come, though. So, for now we are simplifying things. 100K gives us essentially everything that we are looking for – so rather than have a smaller test which does not satisfy some of our requirements, as well as a larger test which while great – also is not necessarily pertinent to what we’re striving for – we have decided to KISS – Keep It Simple, Silly. Now, I did not learn this acronym with ‘silly’ in it, but there might be kids reading!

I realize that this was a lot of numbersinformation to read in paragraph form. Hopefully my write-like-I-talk method made it a bit easier to grasp. Onward to Orlando

This year’s National Cattlemen’s Beef Association convention and trade show was one for the books! Shorthorn kicked off the festivities by hosting the US Beef Breeds Council meeting –which was a great way to show off our impressive booth to the other breed executives. Having some chocolate onhand never hurts, either. We, along with many of the other IGS partners were grouped together – more so this year than any before – and it seemed to grab convention-goers’ attention; we came home with hardly any promotional items or merchandise left!

Montie and I even had the privilege of speaking with a breeder from Australia –he wasn’t a Shorthorn breeder – Wagyu

actually, but we chatted for quite some time. He even asked for one of our Shorthorn license plates to use to name one of his paddocks back home. So, he’ll have a Wagyu pasture called the “Shorthorn Beef” pasture. Hopefully you’ll find a little joy in that fact, or at least grin a bit at the thought, like I did! He also had quite a bit to say about the Thousand Guineas Shorthorn beef, which I did not personally know much about. All of that is to say, you never know who you’ll meet or what you will learn at this trade show!

Several other exhibitors stopped by to admire and inquire about our booth – so kudos to Shelby Diehm, for another job well-done! She was not able to attend the

NCBA this year and I know that she was disappointed about that, but hopefully I was able to somewhat fill her void – and we all know that her disappointment melted away with all those sweet baby cuddles she got in place of NCBA! Where We are Going

Last month, I spotlighted some of the speaking talent that will be joining us in Lexington this summer for Symposium Jul 18-20. This time, I want to share with you about the extracurricular activities that will be available outside the classroom setting while we are in the Bluegrass State. When we set out to plan a Symposium based in Lexington, the goals were to expose Shorthorn breeders to outstanding seedstock in the region, but also to the culture that makes this part of Kentucky so unique. With these stops, I feel we are going to accomplish those goals.

Thursday afternoon kicks off Symposium at Castle & Key Distillery. Located just outside of Frankfort on the drive into Lexington from the west, Castle & Key is a hidden gem in the bourbon distillery industry. As you drive towards the address, you really wonder if you’re headed to the right place. Then, you see it. This gorgeous campus is one-of-a-kind among the central Kentucky distilleries, complete with a sprawling lawn with walking trails, a beautiful sunken garden, and an actual castle welcomes you onto the grounds. Symposium attendees will have the opportunity to tour the distilling facility for a lesson in the history of bourbon and Castle & Key, see the distillation process through from start to finish, and experience a tasting of their various products. After our tours are complete, stick around for the AMS, Inc. Symposium Social at Castle & Key. Take time to tour the grounds on your own, enjoy a drink, and soak in the Shorthorn fellowship that we all enjoy so much. You don’t have to like bourbon to enjoy this event (even though I know many of you do!)

Friday’s road trip takes us north and east from Lexington to Mays Lick, home of Boyd Beef Cattle. Charlie and his family are welcoming our group to visit their Angus and Hereford seedstock operation for the evening. The Boyds raise some of the leading cattle in both breeds that they participate in, raising champions, top females, and putting both Angus and Herefords into major bull studs. Take the chance to listen to Charlie and pick his brain as one of the leading seedstock herds not only in Kentucky, but the nation. While we are at Boyd’s we have scheduled a special workshop for you: a livestock photography demonstration with professional cattle photographer Wes Chism of JWC Marketing. Wes takes sire, donor, and sale cattle photos for clients across the country in seven different breeds and is a wealth of knowledge on getting the right shot to best display your cattle. He’s also an accomplished candid photographer, having his work displayed on several breed magazine covers. This trip is guaranteed to be full of information, fun, and good cattle.

On Saturday, we dive into what makes the Lexington area unique from anywhere else in the world: the Thoroughbred horse. When you get on the bus, you will want to put your phones down (except maybe to take pictures of the scenery) as we head to tour historic Claiborne Farm Thoroughbred breeding facility in Paris, Kentucky. Claiborne has been operated by the Hancock family since the 1910s and is a full-service working farm. The motto that drives this operation is “Doing the usual, unusually well.” We will get the chance to see this creed in action, learn the rich history of the farm, and tour the stallion facility.

Claiborne was the home to Secratariat during his stallion career and is the final resting place of the greatest racehorse to ever grace American soil. Currently, the stallion roster at Claiborne includes nine Grade 1 winning stallions (the highest level of Thoroughbred racing), two Breeders Cup champions, and a winner of the Preakness Stakes, the middle race in the American Triple Crown. You’re in for a treat on Saturday afternoon when we visit Claiborne Farm.

As the full Summer Symposium experience comes together, I hope that you’re getting excited to join me in Lexington July 18-20 for this one-of-a-kind event. It’s been a while since Shorthorn breeders had a major educational event to attend, and it sure wasn’t coupled with the social and cultural opportunities that come with our trip to Lexington. If you’re wondering about travel accommodations, the Bluegrass Airport in Lexington services most major airlines, and the airport in Louisville is about an hour to the west with an easy drive over. Lexington is within a 6-hour drive of these major US cities: Atlanta, Charlotte, Chicago, Cleveland, Detroit, Memphis, Pittsburgh, St. Louis, and Washington, D.C. This location was not only selected for the opportunities to build a unique program, but also because it’s travel friendly for so much of the Shorthorn family.

Now that I have your interest piqued further, stay tuned for April as I’ll profile another round of our top-tier speakers for The Summer Symposium, Presented by the American Shorthorn Association.

Rooted in Shorthorn Traditions

The phrase “being rooted like a tree” is often used metaphorically to convey a sense of stability, courageousness, and resilience. Just as a tree’s roots anchor it firmly in the soil, Shorthorns are rooted in deep traditions longer than any breed. Tartan plaid and roan are two words that take me back to my first memories of finding my way in the Shorthorn breed. Although I don’t remember attending my first American Junior Shorthorn Association show at a ripe 9 months old, my family’s tradition of attending state and junior national shows is where it all began. I remember my first year as an exhibitor in Grand Island, Nebraska, and my mentor from Indiana showed me around the barn. I won my first set of clippers at that show, and the rest is history.

This summer, the National Junior Shorthorn Show & Youth Conference will be held at the Maryland State Fairgrounds in Timonium, Maryland. For many of us, this “cowcation” will once again bring us back together as a Shorthorn family. Junior Nationals will hopefully be a time when our many youth can make connections and new members can find their new traditions.

Once we are together, we can feel honored to be a part the oldest breed in America. This summer, this allows the next generation to build their “roots” within the Shorthorn breed.

Many exciting and new things are taking place within the Shorthorn breed. I am most excited for the Locally Raised Shorthorn Beef program and the new E.D.G.E (Exposition Driving Genetic Excellence) show highlighting genotypic and phenotypic excellence in our breed. The American Shorthorn Association holds true to “Performance with Purpose” and the E.D.G.E is an exciting way to showcase this. It kicked off for the first time at Cattlemen’s Congress and I am excited to see how it will continue to grow and improve our breed.

I am thankful for the many people that have poured into my future and that gives me pleasure knowing I too can pass along these traditions to the next generation. I sincerely wish each exhibitor the best of luck at this year’s NJSS, and I cannot wait to see the fierce competition everyone brings into the ring. Thank you all for being a part of my Shorthorn family and I will see you in Maryland!

Richardson Farms Shorthorns - Kaehler’s Homedale Farms

Kaehler’s Homedale Farms is a family owned and operated seedstock enterprise located in Saint Charles, Minnesota dating back five generations, which started raising Shorthorns in 1916. The first Shorthorns were originally purchased by Rudolph Kaehler, the oldest of ten Kaehler children. Later, he was joined by his youngest brother, Donald, and his wife, Maxine.

Today, the Homedale herd is operated by Frank Kaehler, the oldest child of Donald and Maxine, with the assistance of Wyatt Harguth. Frank loves raising good, big, sound, easy-to-work-with cattle. Homedale cattle can deal with almost any kind of management approach, environment or weather, allowing Homedale Shorthorns to be sold coast to coast and border to border. Homedale Farms are fortunate for the opportunity to export bulls and bred heifers to China, Cuba and South America.

Homedale markets 150-180 bulls per year, sells open and bred females and markets four butcher beef a month. The cow herd has leveled off the last few years at 250 head and it is comprised of equal parts Polled Shorthorns, Simmentals, and Angus. Notably, the Kaehler family bred the infamous “Max Rosa” cow family.

At its beginnings, the Kaehler brothers were instrumental in the development of top-notch breeding stock for Homedale Farms, but Uncle Rudy also helped Donald and Maxine raise a full household of Kaehler children: Frank, Edwin, Ralph, J. Ben, Christine, Marian & Janet. Notably, Frank’s Shorthorn business began 74 years ago, the day he was born, as his father bought Frank a heifer at a sale he attended that day.

Homedale Farms hosted the National Junior Shorthorn Conference at the original homestead when Ralph was President of the organization. Frank, Ed and Ralph all served on the American Junior Shorthorn Board of Directors.

In 1972, Frank married Mary Burke, the sister of Tom Burke of the American Angus Hall of Fame. Frank and Mary received an Angus cow for a wedding present from her parents, which was the start of their Angus herd. Together,

the couple raised six children: Nicole (Lowell) Jabs, Rachel, Leah (Andy) Mindemann, Scott, Angela (Kyle) Hotz, and Lyndsie (Kyle) Balstad. All were 10year members of 4H, served as FFA and Minnesota Junior Shorthorn officers, and participated in national Shorthorn events. The next generation – 13 grandchildren – all continue the legacy of raising and showing livestock. The family carries on the livestock traditions with Frank’s dedicated support and

encouragement, in the remembrance of Mary’s spirit. Sadly, Mary passed away in October 2022, just one month before their 50th wedding anniversary.

Throughout the years, Frank has had the privilege to judge many cattle shows. He was honored to judge the National Shorthorn Show and other national shows. He has offered his opinions at State, Regional and County Shows and really enjoys working with the young enthusiasts in the livestock industry.

Frank often comments that he feels blessed to be in a business where he gets to deal with a great group of people. His customers are long time friends, discussing their goals together and setting the world straight (or so they think). Some of you may know, Frank enjoys a joke or two at times, either telling them or hearing new ones. Perhaps you have heard a few of his jokes over the years, and maybe they still make you chuckle now as you think about them.

Rudy Kaehler in 1972, Donald & Maxine Kaehler in 1977, and Frank & Mary Kaehler in 1994 were all named Shorthorn Builders of the Breed. This was a distinct honor for all of us and much appreciated by our families. The trust and faith put in us, by our fellow breeders, is a wonderful feeling. This year’s acknowledgment from the American Shorthorn Association is a noteworthy and remarkable honor that helps our family reflect on the valued influence Homedale genetics have made in the Shorthorn breed. Super National Shorthorn Pen Show at Cattlemen’s Congress

Forty-Three head of Shorthorn and ShorthornPlus cattle were exhibited in 13 pens during the Super National Shorthorn Pen Show at the 2024 Cattlemen’s Congress in Oklahoma City. These pens were evaluated by Judge Joe Epperly located in Albion, Neb.

In the ShorthornPlus show, Delgado Shorthorns of Fort Cobb, Okla. exhibited the Champion Pen of 3 heifers. This pen of May average calves averaged 614 lb. and a WDA of 2.76. Reserve Champion Pen of 3 heifers went to Lazy Bar F Shorthorns of Chickasha, Okla. This February average pen of heifers averaged 806 lb. and a WDA of 2.43.

Moving into the Purebred Show, the Shorthorn Pen of 3 heifer show. Waukaru Farms Inc of Rensselaer, Ind exhibited the champion pen with a spring heifers calf pen that averaged 822 lb. with a WDA of 2.71. This pen of heifers sold in The Summit sale the following evening and was highly contended for with plenty of bidding interest. The reserve champion Pen of 3 Shorthorn females was awarded to Peak View Ranch LCC of Fowler, Colo. This pen of April average of heifers weighed in at an average of 718 lb. and a WDA of 2.57.

In the Shorthorn Bull show, Waukaru Farms Inc of Rensselaer, Ind. exhibited the Champion Pen of 5 with their spring bull calf entry. The bulls averaged 1036 pounds and a WDA of 3.37. Reserve Champion Honors went to Peak View Ranch LCC of Fowler, Colo., with the winning pen from the Spring bull calf class. These March average aged bulls weighed in at an average of 828 lb. with a WDA of 2.92.

The final show of the morning was the Shorthorn Pen of 3 bull division. Waukaru Farms Inc of Rensselaer, Ind took home champion honors with a trio of February bull calves. All pen of three bulls averaged a weight of 1072 lb. and a WDA of 3.29. Reserve Champion Pen of 3 went to Hugh Moore Jr. & Sons of Jerseyville, Ill. These January average bull calf class, these bulls averaged 1128 lb. with a WDA of 3.14.

Thank you to all the breeders who made the trip to Oklahoma City to

exhibit their pen cattle at the Cattlemen’s Congress. Spectators gathered ringside and, in the bleachers, to watch this outstanding exhibition of cattle. Data

and results for all the pen cattle are on the following pages. We look forward to another exciting Super National Pen Show in 2025!

On the EDGE: A Cattlemen’s Congress Success Story

The 2024 Cattlemen’s Congress opened a new chapter in Shorthorn history, as the first Shorthorn Exposition Driving Genetic Excellence (EDGE) was held. This competition of red, white, and roans on the red dirt was the fruits of the labor of many Shorthorn enthusiasts longing to promote the breed, foster healthy competition, and showcase the animals who combine phenotypic and genotypic quality. All these missions were accomplished in this first edition of the EDGE show.

The EDGE show brings a one-ofa-kind format to the beef industry, as it combines placings of the animal’s genotype (EPD profile) with a phenotypic placing (in the show ring in OKC). Prior to arriving at Congress, a panel of three judges were sent the EPD profiles and percentile rankings on all the EDGE entrants and asked to place the classes on their genetic merits. The same three gentlemen then joined us in Oklahoma City to evaluate those same classes in the show ring, placing the cattle phenotypically without access to the EPD profiles. Their placings from the two sections were tabulated to present an overall class winner and 2nd place animal in the class. Sometimes, we can run all the placing tabulations and end up with a pair of animals that are tied for the overall standings. In those instances, whichever animal placed higher in the genotypic portion of the class receives the tiebreaker and the higher overall placing in the class. This tie-breaker format had to be utilized multiple times in this first EDGE show to determine class winners.

As the show advances, division and grand champions are selected in a slightly different format. The cattle are paraded to the judge trio, and this time they are provided the EPD data on those cattle. The reasoning behind this shift is that the division lineup is essentially a new class of cattle that has not been compared against each other on paper to that point. The judges are asked to weigh the data and the animal’s type equally in their mind to select a division champion and reserve. The classic threeman scoring system utilizing a referee for breaking a stalemate is used.

Some of the idiosyncrasies of the

EDGE show are admittedly hard to explain on paper, which just means you need to see it for yourself! ASA staff is appreciative of all the breeders who exhibited in the first EDGE show, as well as those who donated their time and energy to bringing the idea to fruition. It takes so much support to bring something from the idea stage to the show ring, and we certainly had it. Lastly, I would be remiss if we didn’t thank our judging panel members. We were fortunate to have a trio of men

to keep pursuing all-around excellence in their cattle. The 2024 EDGE judge panel included:

National Shorthorn Pen Show at NWSS

The numbers increased along with the attraction in the yeards at the National Western Stock Show in Denver, Colorado. Forty-three head of Shorthorn cattle were exhibited in 13 pens during the National Shorthorn Pen Show at the 2024 National Western Stock Show in Denver, Colorado. These pens were evaluated by Judge Callahan Grund located in Wamego, Kansas. Again, the quality was outstanding.

In the Shorthorn Pen of 3 heifer show, Pearl Valley Shorthorns of Valley City, North Dakota exhibited the champion pen with a yearling heifer calf pen that averaged 1445 lb. with a WDA of 2.16. The reserve champion Pen of 3 Shorthorn females was awarded to Vogel

Shorthorn Farms of Rogers, North Dakota. This pen of March average of heifers weighed in at an average of 721.7 lb. and a WDA of 2.5.

In the Shorthorn Bull show, Jungels Shorthorn Farm of Kathryn, North Dakota exhibited the Champion Pen of 5 with their Junior bull calf entry. The bulls averaged 1003 pounds and a WDA of 3.06.

Jungels Shorthorn Farm of Kathryn, North Dakota was also named the Champion Shorthorn pen in the final show of the morning. This Shorthorn Pen of 3 bull division was from the Spring bull calf class. The pen averaged weight of 848.3 lb. and a WDA of 2.99. Reserve Champion Pen of 3 went

to Paint Valley Farms of Millersburg, Ohio. This Febraury average bull class averaged 1145 lb. with a WDA of 3.5.

Thank you to all the breeders who made the trip out west to Denver to exhibit their pen cattle at the National Western Stock Show. It was exciting to see the pen numbers excel this year in the Shorthorn Pen Show. Spectators gathered ringside and in the bleachers, to watch this outstanding exhibition of cattle. The sire groups were all impressive with top representatives of those genetics. This year there was a new twist. The first lot in the sale order was Lot 100. This was your choice of any bull in the sale. It was fast and furious on this lot. Again, this snappy sale saw bulls being sent to all parts of the US and several to Canada. Farewells

After a courageous battle with COPD and congestive heart failure, Larry William Kohlstaedt, 81 of Wellington, Missouri passed away on Friday, January 12, 2024, surrounded by family.

Larry was born on March 21, 1942, in Wellington, MO to Fredrick Eldred and Lydia Ida (Huenefeld) Kohlstaedt. He graduated in 1960 from Wellington High School in Wellington, MO. On April 15, 1961, Larry married his high school sweetheart, Janice Lee Chaney at St. Luke Church in Wellington. Larry was a lifelong farmer who loved his John Deere tractors and Shorthorn cattle. He worked a few years as a heavy machine operator and

Wayne William McKee, 89, of Indianola, Iowa, passed away Saturday, January 20, 2024 at home.

Wayne was the 5th generation to grow up on the family farm. His great-greatgrandfather came to Iowa in the 1850s. He and his brother, Brenton rode their pony to the Green Castle Country School through 8th grade. He was very involved through his school years in 4-H and FFA showing cattle and being on the judging teams. He graduated from Indianola High School in 1953.

He attended Iowa State University and was a member of the Delta Tau Delta Fraternity. Wayne was a Sargent First Class in the Army Reserve from 1953 to 1959.

On summer break from college Wayne was a Monroe County Extension Youth Assistant. They met when Aileen was also helping with the Monroe County 4-H. They were united in marriage on June 20,

retired from Operator’s Union Local 101. He served as president of the Missouri Shorthorn Association for nearly a decade. Larry was voted Builder of the Breed by the American Shorthorn Association, named Missouri Shorthorn Association Breeder of the Year, and was recognized for Show Bull of the Year. In 2019, he was recognized as the American Royal National Shorthorn Show Honoree by the American Shorthorn Association. Larry attended Journey of Faith Ministries in Wellington, where he served as president of the church board for several years. He is a member of St. Luke Evangelical Free Church in Wellington and had also served as president of the church council. In addition to spending time with family and friends, Larry enjoyed sports of all kinds. He loved going to the Lake of the Ozarks and was quite the waterskier in his younger years.

Larry is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Janice Kohlstaedt of Wellington,

1958.

Wayne was an active member of the Indianola Evening Lions Club. He was a member and president of the Warren County Farm Bureau. A lifetime member of the Scotch Ridge Presbyterian Church.

Wayne was a lifelong farmer, but his biggest love was his Shorthorn cattle. At age 6 he cut up his father’s leather driving reins to make a halter for his calf. Needless to say, his father was not happy! Wayne could recite from memory several generations of cattle pedigrees of his cows and most of the Shorthorns in the country. He enjoyed raising and taking his purebred Shorthorns to cattle shows and fairs in many different states, receiving multiple championship awards.

Wayne and Aileen loved scenic backroad trips all around the country making it to 49 states, favorites were: Colorado, Western Montana and Arizona. He was an avid reader of history, especially western history, visiting many historical sites and forts. A special memory was their Rhine River Cruise.

Several fun trips were had while watching his granddaughters in horse shows and

In addition to his parents, Larry was preceded in death by his father and motherin-law, Bethel and Dee Deatherage; and a brother-in-law, Mike Kaullen as well as many close friends and neighbors.

When he retired, he and Aileen spent the last 14 winters in Mesa, AZ. While there he started playing pickleball in his jeans and cowboy boots. This was before anyone in the Midwest knew about pickleball. At the age of 79 he took up tennis (with tennis shoes). He loved tennis and became very good, winning several tournaments.

His fondness for sports had him planning his schedule around the Iowa State football and basketball games and of course the Chicago Cubs. Most of all, he enjoyed his time spent with his family.

Wayne is survived by his wife of 65 years, Aileen; children, Beth McKee, Greg (Sharron) McKee; grandchildren, Amber (Jesse) Baker, Garrit McKee, Austin Clark, McKenna Clark; great-grandchildren, Cora Blevins, and Kole Baker; sisters-inlaw, Margie McKee and Suzanne Turner; nephew, Brent Turner; niece, Denise Schmitz; great-nephew, Blake Schmitz. He is preceded in death by his parents, Everett and Mary McKee; brother, Brenton McKee; brother-in-law, Paul Turner.

Gerald L. Schiermeyer, 98, of Seven Lakes and formerly Warrenton, VA passed away peacefully at the FirstHealth Hospice House on Friday, Feb. 2nd.

Born in Superior, Nebraska Aug. 16, 1925, he was the son of the late William and Martha (Grummert) Schiermeyer. After his high school graduation from a one room schoolhouse, Gary went on to serve in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. Upon his honorable discharge, he returned to the family farm in Nebraska and soon

attended the University of Nebraska, earning his Bachelor of Science in Agriculture in 1956. Gary married Susan Brown of Lincoln, Neb. and soon took a job with Civil Service, a career that lasted 30 years. His career would move the family from Nebraska to the state of Washington and onto Washington, D.C. before his retirement in 1984. Gary found a beautiful property just outside Warrenton,Va. with a bold stream running through and on June 18, 1978 married June Ann Dowalo and soon built their dream home; eventually had a barn raising with family and friends and continued working his beloved Shorthorn breed cattle for over 25 years. Gary was also a charter member of Alpha Gamma Sigma, a member of the UN Block and Bridle Club, and a longtime member

of the American Shorthorn Association.

In addition to his parents, Gary was predeceased by his son, Mark; brother Harvey and sisters Viola Houston and Eileen Weber. He is survived by his loving wife of 45 years, June Schiermeyer of West End, NC. He was the beloved father of Scott Schiermeyer, Barry Schiermeyer, wife Pamela, and Lisa Pittella, stepfather to Terry Kochniarczyk, Susan Bragg, husband Allen. He was the proud and loving grandfather to Heather, Christopher, Joshua, Olivia, Tara, Grant, Andre, Jared, Bruno and great grandfather to Aysia and Rowan and great great grandfather to Aubree. He is also survived by dear cousins, nieces, nephews, and family friends.

Change to ASA 90-day Past-Due Policy & Memership Renewals

The Board of Directors took some time to review the 90-day past-due policy. After seeing an increase in overdue accounts, a policy change was enacted, which brought about another change regarding membership renewals.

First (as of January 1, 2024): Any past due balance over 60 days will automatically put an account on-hold until the full account balance has been paid. As a reminder, this will restrict online access to only being able to pay that balance, as well as no printing of any

registration papers is permitted when there is a balance due.

Second (effective immediately): Due to the increase in unpaid membership renewals, (i.e. breeders logging in and renewing their membership and not making payment) membership renewals must be paid at the time of renewal in order to gain online/member access for that calendar year. If a breeder logs in, agrees to renew the membership but then does not pay simultaneously, said membership renewal will be made null

and void and deleted the next day. These policy changes are an effort to maintain fairness for those members who are paying their fees in a timely manner, as well as keep the financial status of the ASA in good order. These new changes are in effect for every single member –whether junior or senior, WHR or TOC – everyone will be treated equally. 2024 Iowa Beef Breeds Foundation Heifer Award Winner

Khloee Cannon of Hawkeye, Iowa has recently been announced as the 2024 recipient of the Iowa Foundation Heifer Award. Khloee is the daughter of Stephanie and Ben Schulmeister and has 2 sisters: Hailee (16), Brexlee (5) and brother, Layton (8). As an award winner, she received three purebred Shorthorn bred heifers which were purchased from the Gilman Shorthorn herd located at Stuart, Iowa. The foundation heifers of the breed of the winner’s choice are awarded each year by Iowa Beef Breeds Council and Iowa Cattlemen’s Foundation. At the end of five years, Khloee will be expected to repay $7,500 to help with funding to keep the program going into the future. The program is in year fourteen and was developed to help youth establish purebred seedstock herds of their own.

Kindergarten and is an active member of the Harlan Fremont 4-H Club where she has been involved in a number of community service projects. In addition, she is a 5 year member of the Iowa Jr. Shorthorn Association and the Iowa Jr. Beef Breeds Association. She shares her family’s love of the Shorthorn breed and has shown not only at her local County Fair, but also at the Iowa State Fair, Iowa Beef Expo, Iowa Jr. Shorthorn Field Days and numerous IJBBA Jackpot shows. In 2023, she competed against 5 other contestants and was chosen to serve as “Little Miss Cowgirl’ for Fayette County Cattlemen.

She is planning to learn more about genetics, breeding, feeding, grazing practices, budgets and promotion of the beef industry. She is not only a good showman but is also well versed in current beef industry issues. She plans to promote the Award Heifer project by sharing on their Facebook page and talking about it at Iowa State Fair, Iowa Shorthorn Jr Field Day, local cattlemen’s meetings and at school.

She will be honored at the IJBBA Year End Awards held at 4:30 pm on Friday, February 16, 2024 in the Pavilion at the Iowa State Fair Grounds and later at the Iowa Shorthorn Association Annual Banquet.

Khloee is a seventh-grade student at West Central K - 12 School in Maynard, Iowa where she is involved in Basketball, Volleyball and Softball. She joined 4-H as a Clover Kid when she was in

Khloee’s recommendations credit her with goals of striving for excellence, being a peer role model and having an exceptional work ethic. Last fall, she went into classrooms of 2nd and 3rd graders to discuss the beef industry and answer questions about cattle. Her 4-H presentation, this year, was “Newborn Herd Health” which was information to educate members about the care needed for a newborn calf at the time of birth.

New Rule for Milking Shorthorn/Lincoln Red Dual Registration Update for DNA Testing

As of July 1, 2023, all Milking Shorthorn and Lincoln Red cattle that are to be brought into the American Shorthorn Association herd book as dual registered animals must be tested as an AI sire or donor dam prior to herd book acceptance, due to the lack of information available in their online registries.

Starting July 1, 2023, all animals tested through the American Shorthorn Association must have a registration or recorded number to be accepted for testing. This is only a slight adjustment to the current rule, which applies to samples sent directly to the lab. This rule adjustment includes any animal tested – whether the samples are sent directly to the lab or to the ASA office for pre-processing. Also starting July 1, 2023, a manual processing fee will also be incurred for those samples sent to the office for preprocessing. We are trying to encourage breeders to send their samples directly to Neogen, once their DNA submission form is approved and in their hands. If there is an error in the registry holding your animal up from being pushed through as registered, you would need to go the ‘recorded number’ route. In the birth entry screen, you can un-check the ‘Register?” box, re-validate, and commit your animal to the registry as recorded to receive that ‘U’ recorded number.

Please be sure to double-check that you have a correct email on file in the registry. If you wish to continue with the printed version, simply log into your DigitalBeef account and go to the ‘Prefs’ tab to update your Invoicing preference (see screenshot). You can also call the office to make the switch.

What do you want to be when you grow up/ future plans?

When I grow up I want to be a nurse just like my mom.

What is one thing you have learned through showing cattle?

It takes a lot of time and hard work!

What is your favorite cattle show you have exhibited at?

My favorite cattle show is Primetime Preview, because I won Junior Fitting Contest and had Champion Shorthorn Heifer.
