= Shorthorn Beef Bits Focus on Fertility This month marks the debut of Shorthorn Beef Bits in Shorthorn Country. Shorthorn Beef Bits is an informative and thought provoking article aimed to get Shorthorn producers thinking about relevant issues in the beef industry that directly impact their profitability as a producer. Topics that could be included are Animal health, movements in the industry, genetics, and the list continues on and on. Do you have an area of interest that you would like to see in an upcoming Shorthorn Beef Bits? E-mail your ideas to megan@shorthorn.org; you just may see that topic in one of the future articles! Kicking off the Beef Bits series is the topic of fertility in beef cattle. All cattle producers are well aware of the value of calves raised during a production year. However, when considering the impact of fertility on beef cattle, the economic impact isn’t always as obvious. It comes as no surprise that fertile cows help
improve producer’s bottom line dramatically. Having productive cows that are able to raise heavy calves at weaning and breed back each year in a timely manner improves efficiency. Consider these statistics concerning fertility from the University of Florida in 2008: Calf price for 500 weight feeder calves is $1.25/lb; percentage of pregnant cows is 85%; and weaning weights average 500 lbs. Therefore, the following calculation may be used (assuming that there is little or no difference in the maintenance costs of a pregnant or non-pregnant cow): 1.) Value of weaned calf per exposed cow if 100% cows are pregnant = 500 lbs x 100% x $1.25/lb = $625 per cow 2.) Value of weaned calf per exposed cow when 85% cows are pregnant = 500 lbs x 85% x $1.25/lb = $531.25 per cow
July 2014
3.) Loss due to failure to become pregnant during the breeding season = $625 - $531.25 = $93.75
Herd Reference Issue Early Discount Deadline: May 15, 2014 Receive a 5% discount for submitting your copy, pictures and payment. Final Deadline: May 31, 2014
Through simple figures, it is obvious that infertility in cattle herds dramatically hurts producers profit threshold. Now, consider the impact of infertility in today’s thriving cattle market where the same 500 pound feeder calf could easily reach $2.00/lb. The impact is even
Megan director of communicaBrehm tions & marketing
more evident when purebred producers are able to market their calves at higher premiums. The need for more emphasis on cattle fertility is real. Cattlemen must choose genetics with fertility in mind. Iowa State University research has stressed that reproductive efficiency is 100 times more important to financial viability than carcass traits. What impacts fertility in beef cows most dramatically? Areas that are easily identified as hindrances to fertility include advanced ages of cows still in production, cows that have excessive or extremely low body condition scores, and nutrition. Calving ease is not always correlated directly to fertility; however, consider the economic impact of cows that lose calves due to difficulties during the birthing process. Such circumstances have the same negative economic impact that a cow who fails to become pregnant has upon the herd’s financial viability. Genetics should be carefully evaluated to ensure calving ease is of primary concern. As cattle producers, we all face many of the same challenges that impact the economics of profitability. Drought, high feed costs, and market variables are constant concerns that must be addressed, yet remain out of our realm of control. An economic factor within our cow herds, fertility, can be addressed by our own efforts and drastically improved. With diligence and careful management, infertility issues can be kept to a minimum and profits to a maximum. =

=Tartan Plaid Upcoming Lassie Events at Junior Nationals By: Fran McCall, Secretary, National Shorthorn Lassies Spring is in the air here in Kentucky! Shorthorn Junior Nationals are just around the corner. We are look forward to having everyone here in Kentucky in June. The National Shorthorn Lassies will be having several events during junior nationals for ladies and any girls interested in the lassie program. The activities for the lassies will be: Thursday, June 26 10:00 a.m. ‘Lassie Princess Hour”, West Hall, Meeting Room 6 11:30 a.m. “Lassie 101”, West Hall, Meeting Room 6 11:30 a.m. “Lassie Social”, Meeting Room 6 The “Lassie Princess Hour” is for young girls interested in the lassie program. Activities will include crafts, snacks and dressing up like a lassie princess. The lassie princesses will have their picture taken with our current National Shorthorn Lassie Queens. We
encourage parents to come along with their daughters to help out with the activities. It really is a fun time for our young girls. “Lassie 101” is for teenage girls interested in becoming lassie queens and adults interested in the lassie program. This is a great program for the current state queens and anyone thinking about becoming a queen in the future. During this informal program, the national queens will be sharing helpful hints they have learned about being national queens. This will be a great time to answer questions about the lassie costume, hair & makeup, jewelry, travel responsibilities and anything else dealing with the lassie queen program. Along with Lassie 101, a “Lassie Social” event will take place for all those interested in the national lassie program. This will be an informal time for all lassies to share information about their state lassie programs. It will be a
great time for state groups to ask questions about getting a state association started and a great time to have those questions answered about sponsoring a state queen. It can also be a great time to share information on sharing costumes across state lines. During this event, we would like to share our “lassie” memories. If you were a previous lassie queen, state or national, take time to find that old “lassie” scrapbook and bring it to the “Lassie Social”. It will be sure to bring out a few laughs and rekindle some great lassie memories. Also, don’t forget to send in your dues to National Lassie dues to: Pam Dressen, National Shorthorn Lassie Treasurer, N4787 515th St., Ellsworth, WI 54011. Membership form can be found on the Shorthorn website at http://www.shorthorn.org/breedinfo/lassie /lassies_lassieorg_breedinfo.html We really hope you will join us in Louisville for a great Lassie week! =

Meet Your American Shorthorn Association Board of Director Member: Dr. Rick Leone by Megan Brehm, Director of Communications and Marketing
Shorthorn Country is featuring articles aimed to help you become more familiar with each Board of Director member. The board is passionate about serving the needs of members and ensuring the success of Shorthorn cattle well into the future. American Shorthorn Association Board of Director Member Dr. Rick Leone calls Southeast Colorado home. Conditions are harsh, especially for a cattle herd. The semi-arid desert region requires 20-60 acres of rangeland per cow to reach its nutritional needs. Not just any cow will do, given the environment. That’s where Rick Leone’s passion for Shorthorn cattle comes into play. Through careful management practices, Shorthorns are thriving in Southeast Colorado. Dr. Rick Leone is a graduate of Colorado State University where he received his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree in 1988. After practicing in Northwest Nebraska for several years, Leone returned home to Colorado and built his own veterinary practice, Peakview Animal Hospital, in
Fowler, Colo. The practice is a full service veterinary clinic, with specialization in beef reproductive services, including embryo transfer work. In addition to his practice, Leone operates Peakview Ranch with his parents, wife Trish, and their two children. Performance at Peak View Ranch is the top priority. All cattle must meet rigid standards to earn their place at the ranch. The ranch has participated in the Whole Herd Reporting program since its inception. Such programs pair well with the ongoing efforts to collect useful data on the entire herd to make selection and culling decisions; the use of extensive data collection keeps performance measures in check. Peak View Ranch has been an active participant in the Great State Feedout every year since 2007. This program has continued to assist the ranch in evaluating their cattle’s performance off the ranch and into a feedlot setting. Gauging the efficiency of their genetics in the feedlot allows information about calf performance to be recorded and correlated back to dam and sire efficiency.
As a member of the American Shorthorn Association Board of Directors, Leone stresses that Shorthorns are one of the industry’s “best kept secrets.” As he has discovered on his ranch, Shorthorns are extremely efficient, performance oriented, and one of the most docile breeds available. Their potential to impact the commercial industry through Shorthorn influenced genetics and heterosis is an area Shorthorns can make a positive impact. Leone believes that it is in the best interest to all in the Shorthorn industry to be “disciplined about genetic choices and selection processes. As a breed we must find a way to gain more commercial acceptance.” Dr. Rick Leone’s enthusiasm for the breed, background in large animal veterinary medicine, and support for the beef industry as a whole allows him to offer a unique perspective while serving on the Board of Directors. Leone’s three year term will conclude in 2016. =

It is with great pleasure that we welcome you to Sho-Me Shorthorns complete herd dispersal. Several factors have played a role in our decision to disperse our cow herd in its entirety. We need to devote our time to our meat business and the loss of available pasture ground. We have had back to back dry summers followed by the coldest winter in 35 years. This is a grass based cow herd. Breeding females and bulls are grazed on fescue pasture during grazing season and fed ground fescue hay and stored grass in the winter. All cows and heifers are expected to calve unassisted have solid udders and breed back in a timely manner. This herd is run like a commercial herd. All herd bulls carry the Sho Me prefix. There will be cows that are flush quality. Cows that will raise a calf every year just like clockwork. There are 6 to 8 unregistered purebred cows that came from an old commercial purebred herd. A few weaned fall heifers, a select group of open yearling heifers. Spring pairs and bred cows. Spring 2014 show calves prospects sired by Gold Stone. Fall cows will be pregnancy tested and vaccinated ready for grass. We have culled the olders cows and open cows. Bring your semen tank as we will sell all semen and embryos. Not a lot of pictures as the weather has not cooperated. It was too cold to wash and slick the cows for pictures so we got a few pictures of the cattle in their working clothes. Come sale day things will be looking a lot better with warmer weather and green grass. Make plans to attend as there is something for everyone. Thank you for your interest and your support in greatly appreciated. Don Mayse, Owner, Sho-Me Shorthorns Jerome Grethen, Manager, 573.881.0835

This cows mother Sho Me Lily is 17-years-old and still hard at it. This cow looks more and more like 402 every year. Any cow that traces back to 402 will make you money.

Sho Me Gold Stone 7C15V. The day he was born you could tell he was special. Naturally thick smooth shoulder and calves with tiny heads. Although has birth rate on his pedigree was a large we preceded with caution. First cows than heifers and to this day we have never pulled one of his calves along as they were presented right. I would use him on any heifer that we have raised and not worry about it. Next he put ideal females back in the herd with nice udders. He also produces outstanding carcasses which is very important for our meat business. Show cattle heifers and steers they get better the longer you own them. He has also sires herd bulls with style to burn. His semen sells as Lot 88. His full sister sells as Lot 1. The best set of embryos we have ever purchased. He died suddenly last fall from cherry leaf poisoning.

The National Junior Shorthorn Show and Youth Conference is closely approaching and junior members are diligently working to get cattle and projects ready for competition. In addition to projects that take preparation before arriving, we offer many other contests during the week that juniors can take part in. Team fitting, quiz bowl and livestock judging are just a few contests that will give juniors the opportunity to apply the skills they have learned throughout the year as well as learn new skills. Contests are a great way to land your unique picture on the front of
Shorthorn Country, win awesome prizes and meet new people. I challenge every junior member to try something new during their week spent at Junior Nationals. This can be a new contest, competing in a team event with new members or even going and meeting juniors from other states. As we arrive in Louisville, as junior members, keep the thought of why we are here in the back of your mind. Sure, winning those purple banners and amazing prizes brings upon great satisfaction. However, when you look back at your junior careers in 10 years, the banners will be faded and the prizes
will be worn and tattered. The only thing that will not fade or break will be the numerous relationships and memories you gain with other juniors across the country. Not only will you make memories together throughout the week and throughout the year at other shows, but also throughout your life after your junior career is complete. These people will become some of the best friends throughout your life and now is the time to go out and make those memories. We hope to see all junior members competing in those contests, exhibiting cattle, and making those memories that will last a lifetime! =
Best of Buckeye Program Kicks off at the Ohio Beef Expo (MARYSVILLE, Ohio) — The Ohio Cattlemen’s Association (OCA) hosted the inaugural Best of the Buckeye show at the Ohio Beef Expo on Sunday, March 16 during the junior show. The Best of the Buckeye program, coordinated by OCA in conjunction with the Ohio Beef Expo and Ohio State Fair, had a strong first show with more than 170 head of cattle nominated by youth and breeders to date. The program recognizes top Ohio bred, born and registered calves, along with the breeder and exhibitor, in each breed division at the two shows. Best of the Buckeye provides Ohio seedstock breeders with an enhanced marketing opportunity for Ohio bred, born and registered steers and heifers, creates a source of more moderately priced show steers and heifers by providing a program with awards and prestige, and attracts new participants interested in showing at the Ohio Beef Expo and/or the Ohio State Fair.

AJSA
BOARD CANDIDATES
James Johnson is a freshman at Lincoln Land Community College, Springfield, Illinois studying P r e - Ve t e r i n a r y Medicine. James is the 18-year-old son of Phil and Nancy Johnson, Niantic, Illinois. James Johnson’s passion is Shorthorn cattle. From the early stages of his show cattle tenure, James has placed a strong emphasis on building a herd of his own. James has exhibited at nine Junior National shows and has participated in a multitude of contests and activities. A point of pride from past Junior National experiences include earning top honors in the livestock judging contest three times and being recognized three times for his photography. As an older member of the AJSA, Johnson has participated in the mentor-apprentice program the last several years. James is an 11 year member of the Illinois Junior Shorthorn Association, serving as a board member for the past three years. Johnson’s leadership roles have been sharpened through extensive involvement in many organizations and activities. Johnson has proven his leadership abilities in the FFA Organization by serving in leadership capacities as his chapter’s sentinel, reporter, vice president, and president. James qualified for the Illinois State FFA contest in record keeping in beef production and forage production as well as the livestock judging contest, where he received first place in the reasons division. Other notable achievements in high school include induction into the National Honor Society and being named captain of the golf team. As a member of the American Junior Shorthorn Association Board of Directors, Johnson will bring many fresh ideas to the table. An idea Johnson has for the organization is implementing a simple change such as making a conscious effort to education junior members about “all aspects of the breed rather than just the show ring standpoint,” notes Johnson. “In order to do this, there could be presentations from knowledgeable Shorthorn enthusiasts at all junior activities to help educate the youth of the industry about the strengths Shorthorn carry in the commercial industry and feedlots.” “Since I began showing Shorthorn cattle as a young child, I always looked
48
up to the AJSA Board for the guidance they provide to the other members,” commented Johnson. “The Shorthorn industry is my favorite aspect of my life; I would consider it an honor to serve amongst this wonderful group of individuals. It is through the AJSA and many other aspects of my life that I have been molded into the individual I am today,” stated Johnson. Kelly Morrison is a freshman at South Dakota State University where she is double majoring in Animal Science with an emphasis in Business/Production and Broadcast Journalism. Kelly is the 18-year-old daughter of Terry and Michelle Morrison, Belle Plaine, Minnesota. Kelly received her first Shorthorn nearly 12 years ago. Since then, Kelly’s passion for the breed has sparked and continues to thrive. Throughout the years breeding and showing Shorthorn cattle, Kelly has charted many life experiences. One notable activity was when Kelly and her family took part in the Minnesota Youth Beef Experience Program. A Shorthorn heifer was donated to the program and was given to a beginning junior member. Kelly was able to help share her knowledge in the industry to the new member. Since participating in the program, the junior has shown a Shorthorn every year since and is now a member of the Minnesota Junior Shorthorn Board. Participating in activities to help others truly makes a difference, as Kelly discovered. Kelly is extremely proud of the cattle she raises on her family’s farm. Kelly continually strives to improve their cattle herd each year. Outside of the show ring, Kelly is extremely active in many leadership roles. Morrison currently is serving her second term as President of the Minnesota Junior Shorthorn Board. Kelly was selected to represent Minnesota for three years on the Minnesota Beef Ambassador team as well as a national representative in the National Beef Ambassador competition. Morrison led an extremely active FFA career by serving in several leadership positions as well as member of the high point team in the state FFA Agricultural Sales Competition. Kelly will bring a solid list of ambitious goals to the American Junior

Shorthorn Association Board, if elected. Foremost, involvement will be stressed. “Serving as a Junior Board member I would love to be able to encourage other members who want to do more. Whether it is getting involved with the KEY Conference or competing in numerous contests at Junior Nationals, my passion for involvement will shine.” Making a difference is very important to Morrison. “I want to make a difference. Serving on the American Junior Shorthorn Board would give me the opportunity to help shape the future for our junior association. Being able to help shape the future of the shorthorn breed would be my most honored role in serving as a board member.” “I have always dreamt of making a difference and helping younger members within our association. By spending the past four years serving on the Minnesota Junior Board, I have been able to realize some of my dreams. Being able to take these goals to a whole new level by serving on the American Junior Shorthorn Board would be an opportunity of a lifetime.” Kendra Davis is a freshman at South Dakota State University majoring in Animal Science with a minor in Nutrition. Kendra is the 18-year-old daughter of Lance and Sharon Davis, Glenville, Minnesota. From a young age, Kendra has been fascinated by the Shorthorn Breed. Throughout her years showing Shorthorns, Davis has built her own purebred herd. It has been especially fulfilling to exhibit calves from former show heifers. As Davis and her family continued to exhibit Shorthorns more and more, Kendra’s involvement within the breed accelerated as well. Kendra became active within the Minnesota Junior Shorthorn Association, attended her first Junior National Show in 2010, and has attended several KEY Conferences. Kendra has built a solid resume filled with experiences to help her fill the role of a board of director member. During her high school and college career Davis participated in many leadership activities, notably by being selected to be the 2012-2013 Regional FFA Parliamentarian of Minnesota FFA Organization. In this role, she was able to organize and implement fall and
spring leadership activities for FFA Chapters across the state of Minnesota. Kendra was also recently honored by being selected as a member of the South Dakota State University Agriculture and Biological Sciences Ambassador recruitment team. When reflecting on areas that Kendra aims to make a difference as a Board of Director member, mentorship programs and the Shorthorn-Sidekick program were addressed. “I believe that the mentoring program and ShorthornSidekick programs at Junior Nationals are an excellent program for both the youth and the older members to get involved.” Davis stresses that adding more activities for young members to participate in will build a strong membership base for years to come. “I think that it would be fun to do more activities with the younger members;” stated Davis, “Doing simple things such as these can make a big impact, and I believe that our association can only get stronger at this point.” “I would like to be on the AJSA board of directors for a number of reasons. I have an inborn fondness for cattle, especially Shorthorn cattle, and I would like to be a part of the board to show my passion and fuel other people’s passions as well. I am a person who likes to be a leader, with a leadership position such as one on the board, I would be able to help the young showmen involved in our association and help them to grow and learn more about the Shorthorn breed.” Mitchell Smith is a freshman at Purdue University majoring in Agricultural Economics. Mitchel is the 19-year-old son of Neal and Jennifer Smith, Pendleton, Indiana. Smith’s involvement with the Shorthorn breed began on his 8th birthday with a very special gift: a Shorthorn heifer. Since then, Mitchell has increased his participation within the breed t h r o u g h exhibiting Shorthorns at shows across the country, expanding the cattle herd, and starting a family fresh freezer beef business. Smith is proud to have been able to sell calves to other junior showmen out of his own herd. Throughout high school and into his college career, Smith has a host of leadership experiences that have prepared him for serving as an American Junior Shorthorn Association Board of Director member. Smith is currently serving as a director for the
Indiana Junior Beef Cattle Association as well as a member of the Purdue Agriculture Student Council. Mitchell was selected to attend the Madison County Youth Leadership Academy, where leadership skills were stressed, as well as many opportunities to learn more about working as a team in group settings, and assessing personal strengths and weaknesses. Smith has been an active participant in livestock judging where he was recently the second place individual at the Indiana State contest as well as overall beef judging winner. When considering the impact he could make as a member of the American Junior Shorthorn Association Board of Directors, Mitchell has many thoughts on ways to strengthen the junior association, the Junior National Show and Conference, and promote the beef cattle industry. “The board needs to continually be looking at and reshaping the contests at Junior Nationals to keep up with the changes in the industry and technology,” stressed Smith. “We also need to look for more ways for all types of kids with different talents and skills to feel success and that their hard work has paid off. We all know that few people win in the show ring at a national level. This would give more kids the change to succeed in different ways and would keep them excited about the Shorthorn breed.” When considering the impact the junior board can have on the cattle industry as a whole, Smith explains that it is even more important in today’s world to promote the industry we are a part of in a positive way. While at cattle shows across the nation, “We have direct contact with much of the public and this would be a great opportunity for us to reach out and inform them [about the industry].” As a member of the Board of Directors, Smith expressed his desires clearly: “I want to give back and strengthen the Shorthorn breed.” Patrick O’Sullivan is a senior at Providence Academy. In the fall of 2014, O’Sullivan plans to attend South Dakota State University to major in agricultural business with a minor in Pre-Law. Patrick is the 18-year-old son of Frank and Mary Sullivan, Maple Lake, Minnesota. Patrick has been involved in the Shorthorn breed since 2006 when he first began exhibiting Shorthorn cattle. Since then, O’Sullivan has participated in eight Junior
National events. While at junior nationals, Patrick has participated in fitting contests, livestock judging contests, and the photography contest along with exhibiting cattle at the events. Highlights of Junior National activities include exhibiting the Grand Champion Heifer at the 2007 Junior National show. O’Sullivan has been a member of the 1st place fitting team and has placed at the contest several other times. Aside from show ring participation, Patrick has participated in a variety of activities. O’Sullivan is an active 4-Her where he has served twice as his 4-H club’s president and officer of the University of Minnesota Wright County Extension 4-H Federation, and selected to serve as a representative for the University of Minnesota Wright County Extension 4-H advisory council. Patrick stepped up as a leader to younger 4-H members when he volunteered to teach a 4-H sponsored beef class for youth involved in the 4-H program for several years. Reflecting on areas that the junior board could take to improve the breed, O’Sullivan has many ideas he would like to see implemented if selected to serve on the Junior Board. Appointing a senior breed advisor to the AJSA is a way that Patrick believes could make a big difference for junior breeders. This individual would serve as a breed representative and mentor to young members involved in the Shorthorn breed. O’Sullivan would like to address ways to help more junior members become involved in the KEY Conference. O’Sullivan is proud of the progress that has been made with the promotion and growth of Shorthorn Junior Funding the Future and Leading a Legacy Sales. O’Sullivan wants to ensure that the Junior Board continues to devote needed energy into such a worthwhile venture. Earning a position on the American Junior Shorthorn Association Board of Directors has been a longtime goal of O’Sullivan’s. “Serving on the AJSA Board would be the highest and most honorable position that a Shorthorn junior can achieve. My previous achievements have instituted a strong work ethic, team player mentality, leadership skills, and have shown me that determination can do anything,” asserted O’Sullivan. “I understand how important it is to step up and to be a leader.”

Jesse Carney is a freshman at Texas Tech University in majoring Animal Science with an emphasis animal in production and a minor in genetics. Jesse is the 20year-old son of Larry and Brenda C a r n e y , Collinsville, Texas. Jesse Carney is no stranger to Shorthorns. He has been showing Shorthorns since he was nine and is proud to be a fourth generation Shorthorn breeder. Carney has exhibited his Shorthorns at many shows across the country including many Junior National Shows. A highlight of his show career came in 2012 when his show heifer received top honors at the Fort Worth Stock Show as well as earning top honors in several showmanship contests. Each year during high school, Jesse purchased a recipient cow and implanted embryos in them. Through this venture, Carney has been able to bring high quality genetics to his farm as well as expand his herd. Throughout high school and college, Carney has made the effort to be involved with many activities and leadership roles. Jesse has served as an officer for the last two years for the Texas Junior Shorthorn Association where he was an active participant in planning the Texas State Shorthorn Preview Show. Carney served as his high school FFA Chapter president as well as the voting delegate for the chapter at the Texas State FFA Convention. At Texas Tech, Jesse is a member of the Wool Judging Team. The opportunity to join the Wool judging team has allowed Carney to develop public speaking skills, as well as the opportunity to grow personally and network with others. After personally observing the impact that the AJSA makes on member’s lives, Carney is enthusiastic about the opportunity to join the Junior Board. Jesse’s enthusiasm about the Shorthorn breed, outgoing nature, and leadership abilities have prepared him for a position on the board. “I would love the opportunity to serve the junior exhibitors in whatever capacity I am needed; serving as an American Junior Shorthorn Association Director would be a true honor,” commented Carney. Sydney Miller is a first year student at Michigan State University majoring in Agriculture, Food, and Natural Resources Education. Previously, Miller studied at Blackhawk College East.

Sydney is the 20-year-old daughter of Matt and Tara Miller, Charlotte, Michigan. Sydney Miller been has surrounded by Shorthorns her whole life on her family’s farm. Throughout her participation in the AJSA Sydney has attended 12 Junior National Shorthorn Shows as well as two KEY Conferences. Miller has participated in many of the contests at Junior Nationals including speech, team sales, and livestock judging contests. However, Miller notes that her greatest achievement with her Shorthorns is developing a breeding herd of her own. Sydney notes that “There is nothing better than going out into the pasture and seeing my old show heifers that have matured into great cows with their calves. It is quite an achievement to have success with a heifer then turn around and achieve similar results with her calves.” Sydney is active in many activities within the AJSA and college activities. Sydney is currently serving as the National Shorthorn Alternate Lassie Queen as well as past Michigan Lassie Queen. Miller is a member of the Michigan Lassie Association Board and served as the public relations officer in 2012 as well as the State Lassie Queen Co-Coordinator in 2013 and 2014. Sydney has served as a three time President of the Michigan Junior Shorthorn Association Board as well as past secretary and Board of Director Member. Miller was a member of the Black Hawk East livestock judging team and is a current member of the Michigan State University Block and Bridle Club where she is the Livestock Judging Contest Co-Chair. If selected as a Board of Director, Miller has many constructive ideas she would like to see implemented to move the organization forward. Implementing the full power of social media and interaction is an area to make a difference. Examples of ways to interact with members and others in the industry include a “Get to Know the Board Members” feature, industry information, and information about the junior board. Sydney also feels like more emphasis should be placed on the Mentor-Apprentice program for all age groups to increase participation. Sydney feels that after being a long time participant in AJSA activities that it is her “turn to give back to the association and breed that has given me more than I could imagine.” She looks forward to having the opportunity, if

selected as a member of the Junior Board, to “agvocate” for the Shorthorn Breed and the beef industry as a whole. “It is important for all breeders and beef producers to educate consumers about the industry. As a Junior Board of Directors member, I welcome the privilege of being the face of, and promoting the Shorthorn breed and their value in the industry,” stated Miller. Gerrit Pearson is a freshman at South Dakota State University majoring in biology with a pre-chiropractic focus. Gerrit is the 19-year-old son of Brad and Bev Pearson, Tea, South Dakota. Since age eight, Gerrit Pearson has been in the show ring alongside a Shorthorn. From his first year exhibiting at Junior Nationals, Gerrit has not missed a year since. At Junior Nationals, Pearson has participated in many activities such as speech, quiz bowl, livestock judging, showmanship, team fitting, and team salesmanship. Gerrit has attended KEY Conference the past three years. Through the years of exhibiting Shorthorns, Pearson has worked to build a herd of purebred Shorthorns of his own; he plans to continue his efforts in the future. In addition to his involvement in the AJSA, Pearson has been active in his high school FFA chapter where he qualified to compete in several South Dakota state FFA contests such including public speaking, livestock judging, and sales competitions. Last year, Gerrit was elected as a member of the Iowa Junior Shorthorn Board of Director member. Pearson is currently a member of the Alpha Gamma Rho chapter at South Dakota State University. When considering why Pearson would like to become a Board of Director member, he cites his ability to stay open minded and work with others to overcome obstacles. “I believe that my skills to work well with others gives me an edge to make others feel comfortable and a part of the AJSA,” mentioned Pearson. As a Board of Director member, Pearson would like to encourage the Shorthorn breed to commercialize itself. “Being known as a show breed is good, but also making a name for ourselves for good breeding and carcass production would be even better opening the market for sales for the animals in the breed,” commented Pearson. =

Long been recognized as a sale that has produced a volume of Herd Sires that have proven to greatly contribute to the Shorthorn breeds genetic base. Always a strong offering of fall heifers from the Sullivan Farms and Gana Farms as well. A new twist to this year’s event was making it an online auction. The auction saw active bidding in the Herd Bull market. Great acceptance was found in the well-bred, functional Herd Sires with the majority being solid colored and emphasis balanced EPD and phenotype cattle. Cattle sold into 22 states and 1 Canadian providence. There was 26 Lots that sold between $5,000 to $10,000. Demand was evident and steady in the 37 fall open heifers and herd sires. An outstanding set of genetics once again represented by the Sullivan & Gana Farms. $61,750 – Lot 48 Purebred Bull.
