The North American Shorthorn Genetic Evaluation is just one of a number of new advantages coming to The Shorthorn Breed. This new Genetic Evaluation comparison may be the most important in many ways. It will define our breed for the future. The industry is moving to more comparable technology. I will stick my neck out and make a statement, “I believe in the near future our British competition will want to participate in this multi-breed data bank”. The industry will demand more comparable data between breeds to maintain a market position. I am excited and the breeders I have talked to since these new numbers have been published are excited, too. I challenge you, as Shorthorn breeders, to submit your data and then use it in your genetic selections, while paying attention to phenotype to design the Shorthorn of the future! =

= Shorthorn Beef Bits What is Registration Worth to You? I was recently interviewed by Cassidy Woolsey, an intern for the Progressive Cattleman magazine about the value that registration papers provide to producers in their operations. After
reading her article, I found myself continuing to think about the topic and how registrations impact cattle producers. Today, producers continue to enjoy high cattle prices and lower
Megan director of Brehm communications & marketing
feed input costs. Where do registered cattle fit into today’s beef cattle economy? Consider this. In today’s profitable market for cattlemen, the risk is also exponentially higher to those raising cattle. Let’s examine the registration paper in a new light. What if a registration paper was viewed as a guarantee of sorts, a staple of predictability, and quality? Now does the registration paper offer any economically relevant benefit? At the American Shorthorn Association, we strongly believe in the value obtained by producers INVESTING in the registration of their cattle. When you register cattle, you gain a documented pedigree, as well as real world performance driven data to improve herd quality and efficiency. Today’s 21 st century cattle buyer demands accountability and predictability in their purchases; a registration paper backed by dependable data is instrumental to these individuals and their bottom line. The launch of Shorthorn’s new multi-breed genetic evaluation is a milestone for the breed and its continued emphasis on performance and genetic improvement. The genetic data available to cattlemen is more advanced than ever before. Producers are able to easily compare their genetics to many other breeds in a compatible fashion, allowing Shorthorn cattle to exhibit their quality and vitality within the industry. As the transition is made into this exciting new program, it is our hope that producers will embrace the performance data available to them and submit more data to improve EPD accuracy for the breed. Continued emphasis on performance will ensure that the investment in registration is worthwhile for buyer and seller alike; confirming the value, predictability, and quality registered cattle provide to the industry. =

New Multi-Breed EPDs Patrick Wall, Beef Field Specialist, Iowa State University Extension & Outreach
The new multi-breed genetic evaluation with the American Simmental Association may seem like an extremely complex, confusing process. However, a birds-eye view explanation may help you understand how this system puts Shorthorn cattle in a much better position in the industry. In reality, the adjustment to this new set of EPDs will likely be much more difficult for the purebred Shorthorn breeder than the commercial bull and female buyer. Keep in mind, this set of numbers operates off the same base as Red Angus, Gelbvieh, and Simmental; their customers already know how to interpret that information. Your Shorthorn bulls and females just indirectly entered that buyers’ market. In the end, a trait by trait breakdown of the transition should help you understand how to interpret the new EPDs. Calving Ease Direct (CE) – We know the breed is trying hard to address calving ease. When blended with other breeds we now know how we stack up to other competition like Gelbvieh and Simmental. It is important to note that Red Angus still operates off a different EPD base for CE and MCE, so the results cannot be compared against that breed…yet. The Shorthorn breed average is now on the correct side of “0” with more positive numbers being favorable (fewer assisted births.) Now we can address our progress in the trait as a breed and compare it directly to other breeds in the evaluation. Birth Weight (BW) – It’s fortunate that the most easily understood trait in the toolbox of EPDs changed very little. Breed average is about the same as well as variation in the breed. Bull buyers can now directly compare sire options for their cow herd on a number of bull breeds. More importantly, Shorthorn Composite hybrid bulls can now have more reliable EPD profiles. Weaning Weight (WW) – Our old breed average hovered around 15, the new one is 53. The Shorthorn breed has not “chased” weaning weight like a few other breeds that embraced the performance movement years ago. As a result, we are behind those breeds on average. However, cattle exist in our population that can compete on any
26
level of performance, including weaning weight. Shorthorn breeders can “move the needle” on WW breed average by turning in more data and being diligent on bull selection. On the flipside, a more moderate WW figure can mean a more sensibly sized cow. Some is good, but more is not always better. Yearling Weight (YW) – Our breed average is now 63, though some of our British breed maternal competitors have breed averages in the 80s and 90s. We have work to do. Still, several sires in the breed have YW EPDs over 100 should extreme performance be desired. Still, if the role of a Shorthorn bull in a crossbreeding system is to make heavy milking, high marbling females, Yearling Weight should be far down the list of desired traits. Be good at what you’re good at! Maternal Milk (Milk) – When heterosis is considered, Milk may be the leading draw of the commercial industry to Shorthorns. Our old breed average was a +2, with very little variation in the breed from top to bottom. Now, our numbers are much more comparable (+19) to others and the maternal capabilities of the Shorthorn cow are more easily understood. Maternal Weight (MW ) – This EPD is calculated by taking half WW EPD plus Milk EPD. The math is the same, the trait now much more useful to commercial producers, particularly now that a 9 has turned in to a 45. Maternal Calving Ease (MCE) – Serious breeders pay attention here. Over-select for BW and CE and you will quickly end up with small heifers and small pelvises, unable to calve on their own. We are behind other breeds in this trait…and we shouldn’t be. If the role of Shorthorns in the commercial sector is females, this has to be an area of intense selection moving forward. Again, cannot be directly compared to Red Angus MCE. Carcass Weight (CWT) – Given the high correlation of YW to Carcass Weight, not surprising we lag behind other breeds emphasizing performance. Move growth traits, and CWT will follow. Ribeye Area (REA) – No doubt, one of the surprising results of the new
shorthorn country = october 2014
evaluation was our indicator of muscle. However, an analysis of our carcass data records for as long as we’ve been collecting them shows very little change in ribeye size. Even though the herd book was opened to a few other breeds, intense selection was not placed on muscle for multiple generations in a row. One thing is for certain, if breeders feel like the breed has more ribeye than the EPDs show, then more ultrasound and carcass data needs to be collected annually, especially if Shorthorn Composite bulls and heifers are in the mix. Backfat (FAT) – Relative to other British breeds, Shorthorn has long offered a Yield Grade advantage, obviously due to less backfat. Fortunately, it has not had a detrimental impact on the Shorthorn cow’s ability to offer milk. Most cattle will read negative on BF EPD in the new evaluation. Marbling (MARB) – Our ace in the hole! The commercial industry is longing for a breed that will complement Angus, Red Angus, and Simmental without sacrificing marbling. Unfortunately, the breed has gotten a little complacent on the trait as of late. Marbling needs to become a higher priority if we plan to maintain our reputation. $ Calving Ease ($CEZ) – The formula is the same. The traits used are the same. The breed average is slightly different. Use with confidence when finding a bull to use on heifers. $ Feedlot ($F) – Since we are now part of the Simmental evaluation $F in Shorthorns more closely mirrors $Terminal Index ($TI) in Simmentals. The indexes are not directly comparable since the breeds do not share index formulas, but the general goal of each index is the same. $ British Maternal Index ($BMI) – Arguably the most important column on the paper for the commercial sector. This index is a snapshot of the role Shorthorns most likely play in a crossbreeding system. The breed average for $BMI closely mirrors Simmental’s $All-Purpose Index ($API). Again, the traits are not directly comparable, but if a bull buyer is looking for $API, they may also desire high $BMI Shorthorn bulls.
All said, the Shorthorn breed is portrayed on paper much like one would suspect. On the other hand, since this is just the first evaluation of many to come, significant movements in traits are likely to happen every six months. For example, if ten Shorthorn bulls get used on a ranch to generate
Durham Red daughters, and all the performance data is recorded, significant movement for those genetic lines is probable. Keep in mind, data from high-use Angus sires are in the evaluation, as well as Maine-Anjou, Chianina, and others. Be diligent in building pedigrees for ShorthornPlus
cattle. The non-Shorthorn side of the pedigree is critical now to enhancing EPD accuracies. Take advantage of what other breeds have done and address the issues within the Shorthorn population at the same time. The tools are there! =

Meet Your American Shorthorn Association Board of Director Member: Ed Kruse by Megan Brehm, Director of Communications and Marketing
Shorthorn Country is featuring articles aimed to help you become more familiar with each Board of Director member. The board is passionate about serving the needs of members and ensuring the success of Shorthorn cattle well into the future. Ed Kruse is no stranger to the Shorthorn world, serving on the inaugural American Junior Shorthorn Board and as the third President of the junior organization. Today, his involvement within the breed continues as a Board of Director. Although many of the purebred Shorthorn cows are gone, today Kruse heavily implements Shorthorn genetics in a commercial setting, helping set the bar for increased commercial acceptance of the breed within the beef industry. Ed Kruse and his wife Jamie operate Kruse Ranch, an all ShorthornPlus, commercially oriented ranch near Kimball, in western Nebraska. In effort to produce beef cattle with low birth weights, moderate frame size, udder quality, and feed efficiency, Shorthorn
28
has been a clear choice for quality. The ShorthornPlus based herd implements Shorthorn genetics along with mostly Angus crossbreeding selections. Kruse has been extremely satisfied with his results; in past years ShorthornPlus feeder calves have topped commercial markets in his area. Customers have been extremely satisfied with the quality and efficiency of their calves from the ranch. In a commercial market heavily saturated with Angus genetics, Ed has been asked over and over again, “Why Shorthorn? Why not straight Angus?” His answer is straightforward and to the point: “The cattle with Shorthorn influence are simply better.” As a Board of Director, Kruse is excited about the “real progress” the board continues to make for the Shorthorn breed. Main priorities for the board have been continued emphasis on breed commercial acceptability. Kruse is especially passionate about the implementation of the new genetic evaluation recently

implemented by the American Shorthorn Association. “As a commercially focused breeder, adapting EPDs to better suit more cattle producers is a great opportunity for everyone. The ability to compare the Shorthorn breed to others is especially valuable as more and more commercial cattlemen begin to implement EPD selections at their operations.” Kruse is a Genoa, Nebraska native. In addition to operating Kruse Ranch, he has served as past manager of the Colorado State Fair, a former administrator for the National Western Stock Show, and a current member of the Nebraska State Fair board. =

Records are made to be broken and this one set a new record gross for the annual Star Search event at Cates Farms. Another overflow crowd that lent itself to very active bidding throughout the auction. It was easy to see the exceptional quality of the individuals in the sale as you walked through the display pens prior to the sale. The show heifer prospects are always the feature at this sale but the cattle offered in all categories brought high interest throughout the sale. The evidence to the acceptance of this leading breeding program is seen in the fact that there were 34 lots sold in excess of $10,000. = Intent to Run Board Members Announce Intent to Run T e r r y Morriosn - I am excited to announce my candidacy for the A m e r i c a n Sh o r t h o r n Association Board of Directors. As a fourth generation cattle farmer, I have a long history in the beef industry here in Minnesota. My Great-Grandparents emigrated from Ireland in the 1840’s, and eventually homesteaded our farm in 1856. Growing up we had dairy cattle, but we gradually shifted over to a full beef operation in the early 1980’s. My uncle raised purebred shorthorns and helped us get our start, with us eventually developing a fully registered shorthorn herd in the 1990’s. Today our farming operation consists of over fifty cow/calf pairs, along with feeding out all of our steer calves. Our cattle are marketed throughout Minnesota and the surrounding states via production sales, 4H projects, private treaty sales, breeding stock, and freezer beef. Our farm is located in Faxon Township not far from the beautiful Minnesota River Valley. We have rolling hills and a creek that meanders through our farm. As our family decided to expand our cattle operation, we decided that our farm name would be best represented as Faxon Creek Cattle Company. Through our marketing via shows, sales, and social media, we have expanded our reach and audience. My children, the next generation who will operate our farm, have been very active in the sales and marketing aspects of growing our operation. We all can learn from our young people’s passion, enthusiasm, and acceptance of technology as we grow our association and breed. Currently I serve on the Minnesota Shorthorn Board of Directors, having been a board member since 2011. I have helped our association by developing a 4-color membership directory, doubled it in size, and increased the advertising revenues which support our state association. Our family has hosted the statewide picnic which has furthered fellowship amongst all of our members—young and old. In addition to our farming operation, I am employed by The Mark
30
Travel Corporation as the Vice President of Travel Agency Engagement. Having been involved in the travel industry for nearly 30 years, I have much business experience dealing with budgets, sales and marketing issues, customer service issues, and technology deployment. My responsibilities include traveling throughout the US and dealing with business owners, listening to their concerns and helping to find solutions that are win/win for both sides. I feel that this hands-on business leadership experience will serve me well on the ASA Board of Directors. Faxon Creek Cattle Company is truly a family run operation. My wife Michelle is very involved in the business aspects of running the farm and making the decisions that help us remain profitable. Our three children all appreciate having grown up in a rural environment. They have all been involved in 4H, FFA, MN Beef Ambassador programs, and the National Beef Ambassador program. All three are passionate about raising and showing shorthorn cattle. We have attended the past five Junior National Shows, and participated in each. Some of our proudest moments at these shows have varied from the kids winning the Quiz Bowl competition to us winning first place in our class in the bred and owned show. All three kids have served on the MN Junior Shorthorn Board of Directors. They continue to be involved in the day to day farm operation and help with decisions about breeding, buying, selling and marketing. Our oldest daughter Erin is currently a junior at Purdue, our daughter Kelly is a sophomore at SDSU in Brookings, and John is a sophomore at Belle Plaine High School. All three have long term goals to be involved in agriculture, ag business, and our farming operation. The philosophy that directs our Shorthorn operation is to raise cattle that are structurally correct, profitable for the farm, easy to keep around, and fun to look at. We choose our genetics carefully, and depend on EPD’s in making our business decisions. Our cattle have to make money for the farm or they are replaced. If elected to the ASA Board of Directors, I will bring this same common sense approach to the table. We have to be smart and
shorthorn country = october 2014
honest as a breed, and we need to treat our customers well. There is not a better time to be in the cattle business or to be raising shorthorn cattle. Shorthorns have many favorable traits-it us up to us to get the word out to other farmers and ranchers, and consumers alike. We need to share the shorthorn story so we can continue to grow and be viable within the cattle industry. We need to be open to change, and always display the highest integrity and standards. I look forward to the opportunity to contribute to this great endeavor. Thank you for your support. Regards, Terry Morrison Nancy Grathwohl Heter - I would like to announce my intent to run for the American Shorthorn Board of Directors. I have been involved in the Shorthorn breed all my life. My grandfather and great-grandfather raised shorthorns, but they did not register them. My father, Eddie, bought his first Shorthorn at the age of 12 for his 4-H project. This project grew, and he eventually started Deer Trail Ranch in 1978. I remember asking my dad as a child why we raised Shorthorns, and I will always remember what he told me. He b e l i e v e d Shorthorns were the best combination of maternal and carcass traits. They were great mothers and could perform on grass or grain and still be phenotypically correct. He truly loved the breed, and he spent his life raising Shorthorns until he passed away in 1999. One of the many things he shared with me was his passion for Shorthorns, and I hope to pass this on to my children as well. Growing up, I had the opportunity to be very active in the Kansas Junior Shorthorn Association, and also the National Junior Shorthorn Association. Serving as President of the National Junior Shorthorn Board was one of the greatest experiences of my youth. Currently, I serve as co-chair of the Genetic Improvement Committee and had previously served as co-chair of the Breed Improvement Committee for

Thank You!
three years. At the state level, I have been the Kansas Junior Shorthorn Advisor since 2006. I also chaired Shorthorn Junior Nationals in 2008. I formed DTR Cattle Company in 2005 from cow families that originated at Deer Trail Ranch. In 2008, I married Ryan Heter, and we moved the cows to Ryan’s family’s land near Raymond, KS. Since then, we have concentrated on expanding our numbers and continuing to build on our foundation females. We run a purebred Shorthorn operation along with a commercial herd. Our cows are raised on commercial type conditions, and must perform to stay in the herd. However, I will always enjoy showing cattle and the competition that goes along with it. We strive to develop cattle that can survive and perform on the sandy, range conditions we live in while still keeping phenotype where it needs to be for functional cattle. Our children, Josie (5) and Edward Ryder (3) have already shown a strong interest in cattle, and we are excited about the future. In my position as a Cattle Genetic Specialist for Zoetis, I work with the new technologies available in the beef cattle industry and help producers apply the genetic tools available in their operation. This has been a unique area that I have enjoyed working in for the last nine years. I would be honored to serve on the American Shorthorn Board of Directors, and I look forward to working with the membership. We are involved in a great breed of cattle, and this is an exciting time to be in the cattle business. Sincerely, Nancy Grathwohl Heter Marty Loving I am announcing my intent to run for reelection to the American S h o r t h o r n Association Board of Directors. It has been a privilege to serve the membership for the past 3 years. I have had the opportunity to meet many breeders, but for those of you whom I haven't met, I'd like to introduce myself and my operation. Over 60 years ago, my Dad and Granddad started a purebred Shorthorn herd with the goal in mind of producing cattle to please the commercial bull buyers. We have carried on those same principles to present day. Along with my wife,
Karen and our son Scott, we operate a 3500 acre farming operation of wheat, corn and soybeans and 250 head registered Shorthorn herd. We have an annual production sale at our farm offering 40 bulls and 25 females. We are WHR members and consistently register over 100 head of shorthorns per year. It is vital to our operation to collect birth, weaning and yearling weights as well as ultrasound and carcass data on all of our calves. This data is not only important to us, but to our customers as well. We focus on low birth weights, growth performance and carcass traits. I feel my experience as a long time breeder of Shorthorn cattle and my passion for the breed allow me to analyze the issues before the board and help to make informed decisions for the benefit of the entire breed. In the past I have served multiple terms on the Board of Directors for my local Coop, County Fair Board and Kansas Shorthorn Association. In the past three years, the Board has tackled some tough issues but have much to resolve to move our breed and association forward. The future looks bright for the beef industry and I believe Shorthorns have the opportunity to expand and grow within the industry. It is our job, as a board, to also look forward and position our association so that breeders and customers as well, can be profitable and successful. Accurate EPD's and quantified genomics are going to play a large part in the future expansion of the commercial industry. I welcome constructive input of association affairs anytime and would consider it my privilege to serve another term on your board. It is a position I have thoroughly enjoyed and would strive to continue to resolve the issues that are currently before the board. Thank You for your support. Marty Loving Mark W.P. Gordon - It is with great pride and enthusiasm that I announce my intent to run for reelection for the ASA Board of Directors. Being on the Board for the last 3 years has been very rewarding for myself and I hope as well for your operation. Seeing our great breed of cattle excel in the beef industry has to make us all feel good about the
direction that we as individuals and as an association have taken in making our product more consumer acceptable. This Shorthorn breed has as much diversity as any breed of cattle there is, and we as breeders implemented this diversity into various breeding programs with tremendous success. Let’s continue this success into the future. Implementing the new Multi Breed EPD System into our programs will show the consumer that Shorthorns are industry leaders in many heritable traits. Diversity of our breed is now being shown to ALL beef producers. We now have documentation now to prove that. Data collection is a very important factor here. Collection of information is now more important than ever for us to continue to be industry leaders. Genomic testing is another way of documenting our cattle for specific traits and is vitally important to stay on the forefront of the industry. Implementing 50K chip testing will reassure our stance there. As I have said before our junior program is second to none. We need to continue this for our future leaders. Educating and supporting our youth reassures our breeds longevity in the beef industry. We are the envy of many here and need to continue that. I am involved in a family Shorthorn and grain operation in Middletown ,Il. Our herd consists of 40 head of Shorthorn cattle. Artificial insemination and embryo transfer is being used extensively . Our goal is to produce sound , functional and profitable Shorthorn cattle for our customers. I have been active in our local beef organizations and youth activities. I am a past board member of the Illinois Shorthorn Association and committee member with the Illinois Fertilizer and Chemical Association. Currently I manage a local independently owned retail fertilizer facility in Central Illinois. I have been at this operation for the last 29 years. My responsibilities include overseeing a multimillion dollar budget , purchasing inventory and direct sales to customers. Obligations also include overseeing employees and complying with government regulations. It is a very challenging career which I take great pride in. This same passion I would have if I am reelected to the American Shorthorn Board of Directors. Thank you. Mark W. P. Gordon =

Dreams Do Come True by Riley C. Francis
I never would’ve thought that at the age of twenty I’d be flying to the Voroenzh Region, Russia to be working with approximately 10,000 head of Black Angus cattle. I was informed about this Stevenson-Sputnik internship through a close friend who has worked in Russia for the last few years. He directed me to Darrell Stevenson and after months of communicating back and forth and much paper work I was set up to leave on a flight to Shestakovo, Voronezhskaya Oblast’, Russia three days after school ended. I would soon be up on a horse by four A.M. to gather cows for syncing, and diving off a horse after roping a calf that needed to be treated. One of the biggest challenges was communication as most of the Russians spoke little English, the Brazilian in vitro team spoke mainly Portuguese and the Americans didn’t have much of a handle on either language yet. My first trip into the village of Shestakovo was an interesting one. As we drove past cattle and horses that I thought were roaming freely I quickly found out that they had collar like pieces loosely on their necks tethered to large stakes stuck in the ground. Most of the cattle were multiple purpose Simmental crossed with Holstein in order for the local villagers to have a supply of milk, butter and meat. The main focus of the Stevenson-Sputnik
operation is to increase beef production in Russia as well as provide jobs in villages where money is scarce. When we arrived in Shestakovo we drove by a shanty-looking building that looked abandoned. I was told, “Don’t get hurt, this is the hospital.” One villager by the name of Tymur has been part of the ranch from the start, and was truly a huge help in the communication barrier we had with the Russians. Though he didn’t speak fluent English he knew enough that we were able to communicate what needed to be done. After being at Stevenson-Sputnik for about two weeks the Brazilians, as well as the two other American interns (Dustin and Justin) arrived. The Brazilians came over being unbelievably specialized in their own specific jobs with Invitro. One particular girl named Namibea whom had been to the ranch once before was bilingual, which made communication much easier. She was one of the laboratory technicians, and specialized in the growing and searching of oocytes. The other three that came where Caroline, Philp, and Pedro; Caroline specializing in the searching of oocytes, Philp collecting the oocytes, and Pedro transferring the embryos. The three ranches that we worked at were Stevenson-Sputnik (the main ranch), Angus Shestakovo, and Zelony Lug. These ranches combined run around 7,000 cows, 2,500 bred heifers,
1 40
shorthorn country = october 2014
and 5,000 calves. These totals do not include the bulls that come through the Stevenson-Sputnik Ranch. On top of working with these ranches we also started doing embryo transfer, and artificial insemination at a ranch called Ekonvia. Ekonvia is the largest dairy in Russia; they run approximately 22,000 head and will be growing to 35,000. They are currently running 2,000 beef cows, but have room to grow to 5,000. The cattle used for dairy purposes are old style multipurpose Simmental crossed with Holsteins. The cattle used for beef production are old style multipurpose Simmental, and they are now beginning to experiment with a black angus cross. Though my time in Russia was short I believe it was an experience that I’ll never forget. The people I met and the memories that were made were amazing, and if given the chance I would return. I want to thank Darrell Stevenson for allowing me to have such an amazing experience. A huge thank you to my parents Eugene and Roberta Francis for helping me every step of the way to reach a goal I had always thought was out of reach, and my older sister Crosley (Francis) Zahradka for making sure I had everything I could possibly need for my trip. I’d also like to thank Kurt Burken for setting me up with this amazing opportunity, and Jamie (Jallo) Burken for answering every question I had about life overseas.=

National Shorthorn Lassie
Queen Canadidates
Christine National Heverly Shorthorn Lassie
The National Shorthorn Lassie Association is pleased to announce the three young women who will be vying for the 20142015 National Shorthorn Lassie Queen at the North American International Livestock Exposition (NAILE). These young women will have opportunities to interact with breeders, assist throughout the many shows at NAILE, form bonds and learn about each other better, and interview with a panel of judges. Crowning of the National and Alternate Queen will be during Monday’s Open show; preceding the Grand Champion Female drive. Best of luck to all the young ladies entering the Queen competition this year and be sure to stop by the Lassie booth during NAILE for a cup of coffee and to check out the trio of photobooks showcasing these young ladies’ involvement with the Shorthorn breed. Representing the land of Lincoln, Alyssa Hofstatter from Lowpoint, Illinois begins the competition for the National Shorthorn Lassie crown this year. Alyssa says that she can’t think of a better way to give back to the shorthorn breed that has done so much for her than representing “the face of shorthorns” as National Shorthorn Lassie Queen. The daughter of Alan & Ruth Hofstatter, Alyssa has been Illinois state queen this past year and has also been active in 4-H, Metamora FFA, Illinois Junior Shorthorn Association, and National Honor Society.
Hailing from the Old Line State, Carissa Haynes from Maryland is also running for the National Shorthorn Lassie Crown. The daughter of Nathan & Amy Haynes from New Market, Maryland; Carissa became involved with Shorthorns at the age eight, it has been her dream of to be National Shorthorn Lassie Queen and promote Shorthorns as the great breed of cattle they are. Since 2009, she has been serving as part of Maryland’s Lassie Royalty and currently serves as Maryland’s Shorthorn Lassie queen. Carissa has also been active in 4-H, FFA, and Maryland Junior Shorthorn Association.
Rounding out this this year’s National Shorthorn Lassie crown competition is the Sooner State’s Darci Cash. The daughter of Don & Miranda Cash from Fay, Oklahoma; for Darci to run for National Queen means the opportunity to serve as a ambassador by promoting Shorthorn cattle while serving as a mentor for younger Shorthorn enthusiasts. She has been active in the Oklahoma Shorthorn Lassie Royalty Court since 2009 and has served this past year as Oklahoma Shorthorn Lassie Queen. Darci is also involved in Geary FFA, Oklahoma Junior Shorthorn Association and variety of community service activities.

=Junior Corner Thanking Others As sale season starts, I like to look back on the previous show season and reflect on how the year went. While reflecting, one thing that comes to mind is the words I heard most from the judges, “Be sure to thank your parents.” This concept never exactly drove home for me until this last fall when I went to pay for college tuition and housing. I had always known my parents spent a fair amount of money on my sisters and I, but the value of that dollar was never known by my sisters and I. Furthermore, the amount of behind the scenes work that was put in by my parents is countless. Making sure I’m always happy was one of the top priorities of my parents. As I reflect, all the winning, all the losing
and all the priceless moments come to mind, but the saying “Be sure to thank your parents” especially comes to mind. If I haven’t already, mom and dad, I would like to thank you for all the hard work and support you provide my sisters and I. For the rest of you AJSA juniors, please go thank all the people that have helped you get where you are. There is way more to be thankful for than just the showing aspect (trophies, banners, plaques, etc…). Maybe it’s your grandparents for attending one of your sporting events or possibly a teacher who met with you early before school to make sure you understood the new math concept. The list goes on of things people do for us, and sometimes we need to pause, reflect
Dustin ajsa Smith president
and thank those that did help us along the way. I realize that my parents spent a lot of time and effort because they were trying to mold us into better young men and women by pushing us into being actively involved. I would also like to thank all those that have supported my fellow board members and I these past few years whether it was a donation for a fundraiser, purchase from a fundraiser, or helping us in any way. “THANK YOU” it means more than what words can say. =

The board approved a motion to give the executive permission to pursue a contract for a design and deploy plan from Stephanie Cronin, with the contingency that the annual management and support contract price be discussed. Motion passed 4-3. Staff presented an approved judges list to the Board of Directors. Very few adjustments were made to the list by the board. The list will be distributed to committees for their use. The list was approved by the board. The current use of A.I. Certificates was discussed in depth by the board. Committee reports were in agreement that the option should be available for breeders to sell certificates or not to use certificates for their bull. The issue was referred to the WHR Restructuring Committee and will be discussed again at the September meeting. Board discussed the topic of charging for the ASA field staff to attend sales. Committee opinions vary greatly on this topic. Jake Alden expressed that he is not comfortable charging for sale attendance. Representatives should be available to make contacts with breeders and members. The issue was tabled to the WHR Restructuring Committee. Alan Sears provided information about a Shorthorn feed efficiency Bull test. The program utilizes residual feed intake and electronic gate sorting mechanisms. The board approved Alan Sears to pursue and provide more information. The ASA could potentially endorse the test in the future. The board approved a motion that Don Cagwin and Joe Christen be selected as honorees for the Louisville and Denver shows respectively. Motion passed unanimously. Montie Soules presented ASA office and customer service updates to the board. The board moved into executive session. Meeting adjourned at 6:25 pm. =

On Sunday Troy Kane judged a multi-breed show of 85 head. 33 of those were Shorthorns. Champion Shorthorn Heifer was DRM Sweet Beauty 402 ET. She is a January 2014
