Breeders can now send and are encouraged to send DNA samples directly to Neogen for testing rather than sending to the ASA office. Starting July 1, 2023, a manual processing fee will be incurred for those samples sent to the ASA office for preprocessing.
3 things will be required to send samples in for testing: 1. A registration (or recorded “U”) number for each tested animal
2. A paper copy of the finalized testing form, (emailed from staff, description below) which includes the Neogen order number
3. A barcode number for each animal tested
Breeders can queue up animals for testing in DigitalBeef and select which sample types they have, as well as which tests they want. Once the form is submitted, staff will process the testing request and get an order ID # from Neogen. A finalized printable PDF of the submission form will be emailed to you to print, sign and send to the lab with samples. Checks/ payments are still made to the ASA. Once staff approves the testing request, the breeder’s DigitalBeef account is billed accordingly.

As the fall season ushers in a new wave of excitement within the Shorthorn breed, all eyes turn to Kansas City, Missouri for the annual gathering of breeders and enthusiasts. The much-anticipated Annual Meeting of the American Shorthorn Association (ASA) will take place on Saturday, October 26, following the National Shorthorn Show at the American Royal. This meeting, steeped in tradition and camaraderie, is set to be a pivotal event for our Shorthorn community, bringing together breeders from across the country to celebrate our shared passion for the Shorthorn breed.
The day’s events will commence promptly at 9:00 AM with the formal Annual Meeting, a cornerstone of the weekend’s activities. The meeting will include the election of new board members, a crucial process that ensures the continued leadership and vision of our Association. Attendees will also hear from the Chief Executive Officer, who will provide a comprehensive report on the State of the Association, reflecting on the successes of the past year and outlining the strategic direction for the future. In addition to the Executive’s report, representatives from the Juniors, Lassies, the Shorthorn Foundation, and the Shorthorn Youth Development Fund will present their updates, showcasing the broad spectrum of initiatives and achievements within our breed.
A highlight of the Annual Meeting is the recognition of retiring board members whose dedicated service has played an integral role in advancing the Shorthorn breed. During the meeting, their contributions will be honored, acknowledging the impact they have made during their tenure.
Following the formal meeting,
attendees are invited to an awards luncheon, where the spirit of celebration and achievement will continue. This luncheon will feature the presentation of several prestigious awards, including the Century Club awards and all the show awards. The list of Performance animals that have achieved special recognition. The coveted titles of Show Heifer and Show Bull of the Year will be announced, along with the Regional Show Bull and Female of the Year, recognizing the outstanding animals that have made their mark in the show ring this year. The luncheon will culminate with the announcement of the ASA Merit Award, the ASA Heritage Award, and the most prestigious honor of all, the Builder of the Breed Award. These accolades serve as a testament to the hard work, dedication, and excellence that define our Shorthorn breeders.
In addition to Saturday’s activities, Friday evening offers a special opportunity for breeders to reconnect and enjoy some good old-fashioned Shorthorn fellowship. The ASA office will host an open house featuring drinks and hors d’oeuvres, providing a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere for breeders to socialize and share their experiences. This Friday evening gathering has become a popular and cherished tradition, setting the tone for a weekend of camaraderie and celebration.
As we look forward to this significant weekend, the Annual Meeting stands as a reminder of the strength and unity within our Shorthorn family. It is a time to reflect on our achievements, honor those who have contributed to the breed’s legacy, and come together as a community to ensure the continued success of the Shorthorn breed.

My children have a book that we often read that has this line in it “No two cows look the same. It’s true!” While this book is written to teach kids about colors (including the blue roan), the statement certainly holds true for the physical and genetic characteristics of our livestock. I’ve written plenty of words on the new Cow Productivity Index in the August and September magazines. If you missed those, I encourage you to give those a read before getting too far into this one, especially the August issue. As a review, Cow Productivity Index, noted in the registry as $CPI, is a maternally focused index released to membership in August. The traits that encompass the index are ones that are the most economically viable in a cow-calf production scenario
that raises their own replacement heifers and markets steer calves at weaning. They include:
- Calving Ease Direct
- Calving Ease Maternal - Milk - Stayability - Weaning Weight
- Yearling Weight, in a negative weighting as a regulator of mature cow size
As we continue the dive headfirst into learning about CPI, I present you with another piece intended to make you think about your specific breeding program and how these tools fit what you are trying to accomplish.
The following database sorts for EPD criteria is my attempt to illustrate the
opening line of this article within our population and others when it comes to genetics. In the first table below is an exercise in studying $CPI. I did a data search of young, non-parent bulls within a small window of $CPI values that are right at the top 10% ranking threshold. I pulled out five of those bulls’ EPD profiles to display. To take this further, the same exercise for our Balanced Merit and Feedlot Indexes are also included. Note that these are obviously not the same bulls from chart to chart. They are sorted into these groups for their index values and then studied further. The columns highlighted in each table are the EPDs that are included in the specific index.
As you can tell, these bulls have varying EPD profiles, but all end up with index values resembling each other. You’ve heard the adage “there’s more than one way to skin a cat,” and that applies to selection indexes as well. With many variables of economic importance within an index, an animal can bring great value for his pounds added, while another may have an advantage in producing live calves, while yet another carries the torch for longevity, and once more another for superior carcass traits. The impact of all an animal’s genetics leads to that ending index value. At the end of the day, an index is an algebraic equation with many variables that add up to one number. Looking at these tables, I hope you
are seeing bulls that make you think “A bull like that wouldn’t work for me. But some of these others fit what I need genetically.” As cattle breeders, you need to be picky about your selection criteria. What doesn’t fit you might fit for someone else and vice versa. We don’t all have the same needs and run cows in the same environments. Find what fits for you and have the discipline to move on from those that do not.
You might be wondering if this is a Shorthorn-specific phenomenon to see multiple types of EPD profiles arrive at the same index value. When studying other breeds’ indexes, do they follow a singular path, or can you find variation within the cattle that arrive at the same
index figure? To test this, I first went through this same exercise with the Angus indexes $M and $B. With 30 EPDs and indexes, their component traits will look different from ours. Their indexes include traits such as docility, hoof angle and claw shape, heifer pregnancy rate, mature weight, and dry matter intake that we do not have EPDs for via IGS currently. Even without identical pieces to the puzzle, the take home point remains that indexes do not have a singular path to arrive at a final value. For good measure (or you may call it overkill), see the same exercise completed for Hereford’s Baldy Maternal Index, Gelbvieh’s $Cow Index, and the Simmental/IGS All Purpose Index.
Looking at all these indexes, I think you can see that there are traits that have importance and play a larger role on the final output in each index. You can probably identify with just a brief study a couple traits an animal has to read well to be at a certain level (top 10% in the case of this exercise), while the others play a smaller role in the formulation. Indexes are valuable to a breeding program, and important for any seedstock breeding
population. However, following any index blindly without studying an individual’s component traits (EPDs) is also not advised. If you’re expecting all animals that have the same index value to be exactly alike on paper, you’re going to be disappointed when you don’t find that to be the case. Without some genetic diversity, making improvements in the cattle population becomes that much more difficult. That task is already hard
enough in a small population like the purebred Shorthorn herdbook. Know your needs, identify the cattle that fit them, and breed them with the passion for cattle that Shorthorn breeders are known for.

The ASA staff is looking forward to seeing everyone this fall as we start heading to events and shows.
The American Royal will be here before we know it and we ask that if you have a stalling request, please send those to us as soon as possible. Also, if you entered and have decided to not attend, please let us know so we can work with that space. We will try our best to accommodate stalling requests and appreciate you for working with us.
We are excited to be hosting the ASA Annual Meeting in conjunction to the American Royal again this year. Check out the schedule on the update page and more details throught this issue.
The North American International Livestock Exposition comes quickly after the American Royal, look below for that schedule. You will notice a change in the schedule this year with the Junior ShorthornPlus Show following the Junior Simmental show on Saturday, November 16th.
If you have any stalling requests for NAILE, please send those in by November 1st. NAILE stalling is always a bit tight, and we advise you to enter more head than you plan to bring to allow room for your animals AND tack space. In previous years, NAILE reduces our stall space by 30%. Therefore, you will receive 30% less than what you entered. For example: If you enter 10 animals, you will receive 7 stall spaces. This is just an example, and we cannot confirm stalling until entries have closed. Keep in mind that you do not get extra room for tack, your tack is with your animals, so enter more accordingly.
Another reminder for NAILE: Cattle entered in the Junior Show Only are not allocated stall space in the Shorthorn barn. There is a “Junior Only” stalling barn your heifer(s) will be in. You will need to plan accordingly if you only want to show an animal in the Junior Show. We advise entering in both open and junior show to be stalled in the
Shorthorn Barn.
Just a reminder before you hit the road to these fall shows, check those registration papers and tattoos for accuracy. NAILE requires junior cattle to be tattoo verified and will be completed during the check in process.
As mentioned earlier, should you enter one of these shows and cannot make it, we ask that you please let us know so we can use the stalling space accordingly. This communication helps your fellow exhibitors so we can reallocate space to others.
We are excited for another thrilling fall and winter spent at shows and look forward to seeing past and new breeders and exhibitors. As you prepare for these shows and find yourself with questions, Cassie and Wade are always happy to assist and help.
*Stalling requests can be sent to Cassie or Wade via email or by calling the office.*

Fall is an exciting time for all of us within the cattle industry. Whether you are gearing up for fall majors, buying a new show heifer for the upcoming year, or waiting for your favorite cow to calve, this season brings much anticipation. These events are not only ingrained in our brains because of the value they hold but also because of the people we experience them with. There is nothing I love more than getting a call from my overjoyed parents to tell me the first calf has hit the ground or hugging one of my closest friends that I only see at shows.
In my opinion, juniors need to recognize the importance of not only friends within the industry but also competitors and mentors. The more we can take the time to listen to current breeders and professionals in the agriculture sector, the better we set ourselves up for the future and continued growth. As a junior board, every time we reconnect on trips, we always discuss current topics related to our breed and cattle production. My fellow redcoats influence and inspire me through their various passions and
thoughts. Even though we have different backgrounds and unique talents, we all share the common interest in wanting to continually improve and positively impact the Shorthorn breed.
By saying this, I want to express the value of genuine conversation and connection. You never know who you might work alongside one day or who might hire you as the next summer intern. You never know what you might have in common with someone until you hear their story. The junior board has provided countless opportunities for me to connect with those who not only think the same as me but also with those who have shared a new, eyeopening perspective. I encourage you all to remember how important your story is to share! Each of us has a purpose for being involved in this association!
The junior board is looking forward to connecting with various juniors at different shows this fall. The value each association member brings to the table is key to our future as a breed!

- I consider it a great honor to be nominated to run for the ASA board of directors. After careful consideration and support from my family, I accept the nomination. I am a 61-year-old, fourthgeneration family farmer and a secondgeneration Shorthorn Breeder in rural Stuart, Iowa. Currently I am farming and raising Shorthorns with my wife Rochelle, who works for the Iowa Beef Industry Council, and my son Ethan, wife Kathleen and grandsons Chripp and Cord, who now live on the family farm homestead. My daughter Leah Reever, husband Will and grandsons Rorik and Riggs, farm and raise cattle in Glidden, Iowa. Our cow herd includes both purebred Shorthorn and Shorthorninfluenced commercial cows. We sell purebred Shorthorn Seedstock at two production sales and retain interest in our steer calves through harvest. Ethan and I also farm corn, soybeans and hay. Shorthorns have been an important part of our family cattle operation since the 1940’s when my father Carl Gilman and my uncle started Gilman Brothers. At the time, my uncle Roy Gilman, was the field man for the Iowa Shorthorn Association. In 1985, I graduated from Iowa State University and came home to farm, right in the middle of the farm crisis. I will always credit the daughters and granddaughters of the Shorthornbased cow herd for getting me started right with fertile, easy-keeping cows. Retaining ownership of my Shorthorn based calves and feeding them to harvest and selling them on the grid for
premiums was as important then as it is today, thanks to my training on the livestock judging team and meat animal evaluation team at Iowa State. It was easy to see Shorthorns had what it takes to satisfy every fraction of our industry.
I am no longer the chief manager here at Gilman Shorthorns. In 2014, my son Ethan graduated from Iowa State University and came home to the family farm. He has slowly taken over management of our cow herd. In 2018, he added an assistant manager Kathleen, or Kat, as many of you know her by. It is so rewarding to see excitement for Shorthorns in the third generation of the Shorthorn breeders here at Gilman Shorthorns. It is even more satisfying to see the interest start to develop in the two young grandsons Chripp and Cord. Future generations are the most significant reason to keep looking ahead to the future of our breed and make sure we are on the cutting edge of technology and consumer trends.
Right out of college I served on the Iowa Shorthorn Association board of directors and the Iowa Beef Breeds Council. I was also president of the Adair County Extension Council and chairman of the public relations committee with the Iowa Cattleman’s Association. I served on the West Central Valley school board during the passing of a bond issue to build a new high school. Currently, I am a board member for the Stuart Community Care Center and Farmer’s Electric Coop of Greenfield, Iowa. While it is an honor to be nominated to run for the ASA board of directors, it would be more of an honor to receive your vote of confidence to serve as a director with the ASA board.
Jeff Aegerter - I grew up in Seward, Nebraska where my family had a small herd of Shorthorns and I was active in the Junior Program showing Shorthorn Cattle. I became involved in the American Junior Shorthorn Association attending National Junior Shows and served on the American Junior Shorthorn Association Board of Directors. Upon High School graduation I attended the University of Nebraska where I earned an Ag Business Degree. Later I worked for the American Shorthorn Association and Shorthorn Country (Dr. Roger Hunsley, Don Cagwin, and Alan Sears). For the last 24 years my wife, Darla, and I have operated Aegerter Marketing Services, Inc. specializing in marketing Shorthorn/Shorthorn Plus Genetics. This enterprise allows us the privilege to work with Shorthorn Breeders from all across the United States and Canada assisting them in marketing there Shorthorn Genetics via live auction, online sales or private treaty transactions.
More recently, I was asked to serve on the Board for the Shorthorn Youth Development Fund (SYDF) and currently serve as President. The SYDF is the major fund raising vehicle to support the National Junior Shorthorn Show. The SYDF has accomplished much in a short time and we are excited about the future of this group and what it does for Shorthorn and the youth of our Breed.
Most importantly I am blessed with a wonderful family. My wife Darla and I, along with son Kane reside in Seward, Nebraska and maintain a herd of 25
Shorthorn/Shorthorn Plus Cows where we firsthand experience the success and personal fulfillment of producing Shorthorn and Shorthorn Plus Cattle.
If elected to the American Shorthorn Association Board of Directors I will work diligently with the entire Board, the entire American Shorthorn Association staff, and my fellow Shorthorn Breeders to promote Shorthorn Cattle and continue the exciting path in which Shorthorns are currently headed down.
Jeff BedwellIt has been both an honor and pleasure, serving the membership this past 3 years as a Senior Director of the American Shorthorn Association Board of Directors. At the pleasure and support of the American Shorthorn Membership delegates, I am enthusiastically seeking a second 3-year term on the ASA Senior Board.
I am a lifelong Shorthorn Breeder from northwest Oklahoma where the Bedwell Family have maintained owned, and promoted Registered Shorthorn cattle since the early 1900’s.
Since my earliest memories of being a Shorthorn cattle breeder, my family and I have always considered the stewardship of the breed equally important to the friendships and relationships we have developed over those decades of Shorthorn involvement.
My service on the ASA Senior Board the past 3 years has been personally very educational, rewarding and yet challenging at times. During this time as a Board Member, I have certainly gained a healthy respect and appreciation for some of the complexities related to the diverse needs of the Shorthorn Breeders and their needs relative to the guidance and stability that a highly responsive Breed Association and Professional Staff can provide.
In my view, previous Senoir Board of directors have made tough, foresightful decisions that are allowing our breed to grow and to become increasingly relevant in the diverse beef industry that we all participate in today! With today’s complexities in agriculture and society there are many important decisions that lay ahead.
If voting delegates at the annual meeting allow me the opportunity to serve the membership with an additional term as a Senior Board member I will do so with as much energy, vision, and experience as I can provide.
Over these past few years, it has been my observation that many members desire an association that remains
accountable to the membership while still being responsive to the everchanging issues that arise for breeders that helps maintain our breed trajectory in a direction that allows growth and stability of both the Association and the individual breeders. I too share these thoughts regarding this Great Breed Association.
Thank you for your consideration and I greatly appreciate your support as I seek a second term as a Board of Director for the American Shorthorn Association.

On the following pages, you will find a list of the Shorthorn breed’s honor roll of performance champions, also known as the Pacer Performance Awards for 2023. Congratulations to all breeders and their animals who qualify for these designations. It’s not an easy task for a sire or dam to qualify for these awards! To understand the standards these animals must meet to qualify for these various categories, check out the last page of these award winners.
The cows listed are all that are newly
qualified for the Performance Award categories based off their 2023 calves. The youngest cows to qualify for this set of awards are the 2019 born females that qualified on their first three calves in 2021, 2022 and 2023. We treat the Performance Awards recognition like a “hall of fame” induction: once you get recognized, you’re in for life! A cow could certainly meet the qualifications for Performance or Pacesetter Dam multiple times in her life (and many do!), but the cow is only honored with the recognition
the first time she qualifies. If you have a cow that you feel qualifies for the 2023 awards and do not find her on the list, it’s likely because she was a past qualifier who has already been recognized. In Digital Beef, each qualifying animal has an “Awards” tab you can click to see when and what recognition your animal has received. A cow can be recognized as a Performance Dam and then later in life be recognized as a Pacesetter Dam as well.

Today, the American Royal is known by many as one of the top-tier national livestock shows in the country, especially for the Shorthorn breed. The show attracts hundreds of cattle to its fall livestock show each year and recently introduced a spring youth livestock show. The historic show got its start 125 years ago in 1899.
The early days
The American Royal began as the National Hereford Show, the first-ever event for the exhibition and sale of purebred cattle. Business and civic leaders in Kansas City founded the show to promote the region’s thriving livestock industry at the time, attracting 55,000 spectators and 541 head of registered Hereford cattle.
The inaugural year was such a success that the Shorthorn Cattle Breeders’ Association, as the association was known then, joined the show the following year in 1900. The show was recorded in history with two different names,
the Hereford-Shorthorn Cattle Show and the National Live Stock Show. It was held October 15-25 in the historic Kansas City Stockyards and drew such a crowd that many had to be turned away. Shorthorns were well represented. One exhibitor, G.M. Casey of Shawnee Mound, Missouri, brought 50 head to the show, which was boasted as “the largest exhibit of pure blood cattle of one breed ever shown in the same ring by the one exhibitor.”
In 1901, the show was officially named the American Royal and diversified by adding sheep, swine, poultry and draft horses.
1913 marked the first year Shorthorn cattle won grand champion in the carlot class, edging out the Herefords. The historical records state that the judges said the cattle were “perfect” in terms of color and confirmation. They sold for $12.85 per hundredweight, which marked a new record high selling price at the American Royal.
The show experienced such growth in its first 22 years that plans for a permanent home for the American Royal Livestock Show came to fruition in 1921. The new seven-and-ahalf-acre building cost $800,000 at the time and was built
with support of the Kansas City Stock Yards Company, Kansas City Chamber of Commerce and the Hereford and Shorthorn breed associations. Shorthorn’s contribution to what was then one of the largest structures of its kind was $100,000. The nearly new structure for the livestock show burned down in February 1925, but the community rallied to ensure a new building was in place for the show by the fall of the same year.
Trials and tribulations
The American Royal and Kansas City Stockyards experienced several other setbacks over the years, from widespread disease to floods and fires. In 1917, one of the most significant disasters in American Royal history struck the Kansas City Stockyards. On October 16, a disgruntled former employee of the Stockyards started a fire that killed $1 million worth of livestock—12,000 head of cattle and 4,000 hogs. It became the largest insurance claim in American history at the time. That year, the livestock show was held at Electric Park, an amusement park in Kansas City.
The show did have to be cancelled in 1914, 1944 and 1945. In 1914, a major outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease in the U.S. cancelled the show. For two years during World War II, the livestock shows were cancelled because the Kansas City Stockyards and American Royal facilities were being used as a glider plant for war production.
Changes in the mid-20th century
Even after heartache in these early years, the American Royal saw tremendous entry numbers in the 1950s, suggesting the need for a larger facility for cattle.
In 1955, the livestock show had more entries than any other in the world. Soon after, a new pavilion was built to attract an incredible 10,000 additional head of cattle to the livestock show.
Throughout the rest of the 20th century, the American Royal continued to evolve and build new facilities to accommodate its events, which didn’t just include the livestock show. Eqwuine shows, rodeo and barbecue events began to further define the American Royal brand.
American Royal and the Shorthorn breed today
The Shorthorn breed has always been important to the American Royal Livestock Show, especially in the foundational years. Today, the breed still plays a significant role in the show with around 100 head being entered each year.
Montie Soules, executive secretary/ CEO at the American Shorthorn Association, said, “The tenure of the American Royal is one of the greatest stock shows in our industry.”
The American Royal and the American Shorthorn Association (ASA) are located across the Missouri River from one
another in Kansas City. Proximity to the American Royal is just one of the reasons ASA moved from Omaha in 2015.
“With the American Royal being here and Kansas City being the agricultural town that it is with multiple agricultural associations, it just made sense to move to Kansas City,” Soules said. “It has been very positive for us to be involved with the American Royal.”
Multiple ASA staff members volunteer with the American Royal. Soules serves as the chair of the ethics committee, helping to select the livestock show judges each year, while Wade Minihan, director of shows and member communications, and Cassie Reid, director of shows and events, volunteer their time on committees related to the American Royal livestock show events.
Today, the ASA also hosts its annual meeting in conjunction with the American Royal Livestock Show, which has boosted meeting attendance.
The American Royal’s next chapter
The future is bright for the American Royal, which is currently in the process of building the nation’s epicenter for food and agriculture—a new facility for all its
events and engagement, including the historic livestock show. The new food and agricultural campus located in Wyandotte County, Kansas will cover nearly 1,000,000 square feet, offering Shorthorn breeders multiple opportunities. The complex can house 3,850 head of cattle and will be centered around three arenas and a state-of-the-art learning and engagement center.
Education is a focal point for the American Royal and will continue to be a key initiative in the new facility.
The American Royal offers over 100 scholarships for agriculture, food, natural resources or veterinary students and hosts numerous educational programs each year for youth and adults to help build a greater appreciation for agriculture in Kansas City and beyond.
The American Royal plans to be hosting events in its new facility by 2026, while continuing to honor its 125-year legacy as a stakeholder in the agriculture industry and livestock show circuit.

What do you want to be when you grow up/ future plans? I want to study agriculture. I live on a 5th generation family farm and want to have the knowledge to keep it going for many more
What is your favorite Junior Nationals activity? Team fitting. I have loved learning how to fit and appreciate everyone who has taken the time to teach me. What is one thing you have learned through showing cattle? How to persevere. I had a steer this year who would get away from me because he was scared. It was discouraging but I kept working with him and giving him experiences outside of the farm. He is now my showmanship steer and we won intermediate showman at field day.

Norman “Gerald” Alexander, of Weyburn, Saskatchewan, born July 6, 1925, passed away September 9, 2024 at the age of 99 years.
Gerald was predeceased by his parents, James and Alicia Alexander; first wife, Pauline Alexander & second wife, Delia Alexander; daughter, Barbara LeBlanc and all of his brothers and sisters.
Gerald will be lovingly remembered by his son, Grant (Chris) Alexander of Weyburn, SK; daughter, Betty Stewart (Bob) of Kelowna, BC; grandson, Aaron & children Andrew & Jaydon, grandson, Joel (Sarah) & children, Madeline, Abigail & Dean, granddaughter, Meaghan (Steve) & children, Ronan and Violet; son in law, Rob LeBlanc of Edmonton, AB; grandson, Michael (Talea) & children, Skylar, Kelin & Torin, grandson, Ryan & his son, Haylo; daughter, Kathy (Jim) Vancha of Delisle, SK; granddaughter, Lindy (Collin) & children, Abby and Ethan, grandson, Jordan (Kathleen) & children, Lukas and Max, grandson, Andrew (Angela) & children, Tucker, Alex and June as well as nieces, nephews, extended families and friends.

He spent over 15 years on the Board of directors of the Weyburn Co-operative Association and was Chairman of the board for 10 years. He was leader of the Lomond 4-H Beef Club for many years as well. He was a proud supporter of 4-H and was a member of the first 4-H club established in Saskatchewan and had attended every Interclub 4-H show held in Weyburn since they started. He was on the founding committee of Canadian Western Agribition and represented Agribition at the Royal show in Coventry, England and the Commonwealth tour of Britain. He was a long- time director of the Sask Shorthorn Association and was a Past President. As well he spent 11 years on the board of directors of the Canadian Shorthorn Association and spent 3 years as President of the CSA. One of the highlights in his presidency of the CSA was hosting the 1980 World Shorthorn Conference in Calgary. He was also Chairman of the Saskatchewan Cattle Breeders Association. He was on the board of directors of the Weyburn Red Wings hockey club and enjoyed singing the National Anthem at Red Wings games for many years.
Gerald was honoured as a “Legend of the Breed” by the Canadian Shorthorn Association and a ‘Builder of the Breed” by the American Shorthorn Association and is one of the very few people outside the US that has received this award. He received an Honour Scroll from the Sask Livestock Association for his support and

Sue worked at Orscheln Farm & Home in MO and Hils Ace Hardware in IL. She was an avid St. Louis Cardinal’s fan and loved watching the games. She also enjoyed making crafts, she would go and find rocks and paint pictures. Sue was an amazing cook. She loved spending time with her family, especially her grandkids.
furtherment of the livestock industry in this province.
Gerald loved to sing and he spent many years singing in the Octavious Singers and Variations choir in Weyburn. He also sang at dozens and dozens of weddings and funerals in the community right up to just before his passing. He also loved to sing in the choir at his church, the Weyburn Free Methodist Church. For many years, he sang “O Holy Night” at the Christmas Eve service at the church.
As a young man, Gerald was active in numerous sports such as hockey and was the Captain of the Goodwater Oil Kings hockey team for several years. As he got older, he continued to love sports of all kinds and seldom missed a Weyburn Red Wings game right from when they were established in the early 60s. On the night he was admitted to the hospital, he had attended a Red Wings game and he told the doctor that he wanted to be out of the hospital soon as there was another game he wanted to attend, two nights later. In the summer, he could usually be found at many ball games in Weyburn.
To say that he enjoyed a very active life is an understatement. He absolutely loved life and loved his community. On his return from many trips he would oftentimes say that the places he visited were nice to see, but he really had never found a place he would rather live than in the Weyburn community.
It was 126 years between the birth of Gerald’s parents first child and his death. This is something I doubt if any parent could have ever imagined.
