9th PRODUCTION SALE

Monday, November 4, 2024 — 1 p.m. (CT) — Trail, Oklahoma

124 years of Western Oklahoma ranching tradition of the Craig and Laubach families!

Welcome to P&R Herefords 9th Production Sale

Boy! Time sure does fly! It’s hard to believe that our first production sale is just one-year shy of a full decade ago.

Many changes have occurred over the last few years, but one thing has remained constant, raising cattle in western Oklahoma is a worthy and rewarding endeavor in a not so ideal environment.

I have a lot of people to thank for helping P&R Herefords get to where it is today, but one person that never gets talked about enough is my brother Ross Laubach. Uncle Ross, as the kids know him, has been the work horse behind the entire ranch for a long time.

Thank you Uncle Ross for all that you do, including giving the kids a combine ride from time to time, or checking in on the registered herd, when your duties managing dad’s commercial herd is more than enough for three men.

We are all thankful for a strong cattle market, and for whatever rain we have received, but God knows we could always use another rain around here.

Visitors are always welcomed. Come visit our functional, maternal, cow herd in their working clothes being handled just like our commercial cattle. Moderate cows, weighing between 1100 to 1300 lbs., weighing off 600 to 700 lb. calves without creep, year in and year out, regardless of our weather conditions.

“Range cattle efficiency” is what our program is all about. We consider our herd to be an efficiency herd, not a performance herd. Optimum is always preferred over maximum.

We aim to provide you Hereford bulls that will hold up in a low-input, harsh ranching environment, to help you raise commercial cattle that are profitable and sustainable.

Thanks again to Graft-Britton Ranch for providing really good cattle for this sale over all of these years. We appreciate Glenn and Jean Britton, and their grand son Ross Graft, for all that they do to contribute to this sale each and every year!

Thank you to J.C. Stockton for his tireless efforts keeping the registered herd cared for. It always helps to have a real cowboy feeding animals the right way so they are ready to work out on the range.

Thank you to Ky Stierwalt for taking the sale pictures. Thank you to Dustin and Chisolm, and all of the sale day staff, and a very important thank you to The Bank of the West, and the Rounds family with R&R Livestock Feeds for once again sponsoring and providing our meal on sale day.

Thank you for your interest in P&R Herefords genetics. We hope to see you on sale day!

Sincerely, Paul Laubach

We are starting this year’s sale bulls with a proven herd sire. P&R Advancer L 005H, and his progeny, will be a sale feature. 005H is an outcross sire that we used to incorporate the genetics of the late Jack Turner from Sayre Oklahoma into our P&R herd. Our 765E “Freckles” herd sire will also have a strong group of progeny in this year’s sale. The bulls were backgrounded on hay and cubes post weaning, until wheat pasture last spring, and have since ran on our fields eating crabgrass until recently, when we had to supplement hay some because of dry conditions. J.C. has fed the bulls 2lb. to 3 lbs. per day of either 14% or 20% cubes throughout the summer. We are selling full possession and ¾ semen interest in all P&R bulls

• For reference and for sale. 005H is a first class herd sire that we used successfully on heifers for 3 years before breeding him to mature cows this summer. Pheonotypically, 005H is hard not to like. A long bodied, smooth, very attractive bull, with extra eye pigment and eye appeal. Genetically, 005H ranks in the elite top 7% of the breed for calving ease direct, elite top 3% for birth weight, yet also ranks in the elite top 5% for marbling EPD according to his genomic EPD profile. Dam was a top producer in our herd, raising four calves with a 103.5 weaning weight ratio (including 005H) before she sold to Rounds Cattle Company in our 2022 sale. Her pedigree is anchored by two generations of Jack Turner bred AHA designated dam of distinction cows. 005H’s sire (Mandate) is a proven breed leader for calving ease and carcass. Just a four-year old, this bull has plenty of use left in him. Several top sons and daughters sell out of him in this sale. Selling full possession and retaining a full 1/4 semen interest.

• Top maternal herd sire we puchased in Holden’s 2023 production sale and have used for two seasons now. We love the cow families and the maternal power in 1329J’s pedigree. A very structurally correct and functional herd sire that is easy on the eye and loaded with cow power. Dam was a top donor cow for Holden Herefords, Sadler Ranch, and now resides at Topp Herefords in North Dakota. 1329J’s carries more performance in a maternal package with his EPDs ranking in the top 25% of the breed for both WW and YW, yet his sustained cow fertility (SCF) EPD ranks in the elite top 4% of the Hereford breed, and the top 7% of the breed for Baldy Matenrnal $Index (BMI) and Brahman Maternal $Index (BII). 1329J also ratioed 139 on IMF (marbling) against his contemporaries in the Holden herd, and ranks in the top 16% of the Hereford breed for IMF EPD. Just 3 years old, this top line-one herd sire has plenty of life in him and will build you an elite set of females.

• 350L is one of the top “range cattle efficiency” beef bulls in the sale. Easy fleshing, deep bodied, thick bull with very sound skeletal structure. This bull reminds us so much of his sire the way he is so easy keeping. Very balanced combination of calving ease and performance. CE and BW EPD’s rank in the top 25% of the breed while still sporting a +87 YW EPD. Dam averaged a 205-day 598lb/104 weaning ratio on her first five calves maintaining an excellent 363-day calving interval. We think this stout beef bull will catch your eye on sale day.

Once again Glen & Jean Britton, and grandson Ross Graft, have brought a solid set of bulls to this years sale. These Graft-Britton Ranch line-one horned bulls are bred to last. The bulls are managed similar to the P&R bulls, wheat pasture after post weaning conditioning, then they have run on native grass during the summer with limited feed supplement.

Bred to either of the below listed reference sires. 282K is horned and 3523 is homozygous polled, so if any of the horned heifers calves are polled you can bet they should be registered to 3523. Dr. Jeremy Schneider preg checked the heifers via ultrasound on 8/14/2024 and all ten of these were called safe in calf as listed in their footnotes.

AEPD stands for Expected Progeny Differences, and it is a computer generated system to help predict progeny differences in certain traits based on data collected by breeders, EPDs have been used for over five decades now, and each breed’s EPDs are unique in their own calculations and algorithms, yet all EPDs even across breeds seek to help producers identify beef animals’ ability to transmit production traits to their progeny.

The accuracy of EPDs on animals with unrecorded progeny is actually very low, genomic enhanced EPDs (based on DNA samples) helps increase accuracy in real terms of being equivalent of 10 to 15 progeny records being recorded, which is not a lot, thus still relatively low in predictability compared to a sire that has hundreds or even thousands of progeny recorded.

There are calculations in the algorithms in the Hereford breed that are controversial among some breeders. For example: 1) There is a negative correlation factored in between birth weight and yearling weight. If an animal’s yearling weight EPD goes up exponentially, it will also increase the animals birth weight EPD too. The premise of the negative correlation is sound in logic, yet doesn’t account for early gestation, which could be scientifically elusive to account for. Generally speaking, the greatest calving ease bulls in the Hereford breed will have average to below average weaning and yearling weight EPDs, and likewise very high growth yearling weight EPD bulls would have higher birth weight EPDs than breed average. 2) There is a negative correlation between growth and milk.

There are also some aspects of the algorithms in Hereford EPDs that fail to factor in basic animal husbandry breeding knowledge. For example: Weaning weight and yearling weight performance is based on how well animals in-herd ratio within any certain breeder’s herd. However, the algorithms don’t account for the negative age of calves versus their average daily gain. Simply put, any cattleman that understands anything knows that as an animal reaches more age and maturity their average daily gain is going to drop. Once feedyard cattle get so fat, you can keep feeding them, and they will continue to gain weight, but they will not gain as quickly or as efficiently. Likewise, as a nursing calf gets older, their rate of gain per day will begin to decline, they will still gain, but not as rapidly. In the calculations of adjusted 205-day weights and 365-day weights, the calculations don’t account for this known production fact, and thus older calves are discriminated against, compared to younger calves that the computer just assumes their weight gain to increase at their current daily rate of gain even as they get older.

Also, breed associations, including Hereford, explain the comparison of growth EPDs in real terms, stating that a bull with a +90 yearling weight EPD could be expected to sire calves that will weight 20 lbs. heavier than the progeny of a +70 yearling weight EPD bull. The fact is the difference could be less or even far greater than the 20 lb. difference. There isn’t any breed association that would be willing to warranty or “stand behind” the predictions with real monetary value being compensated to a buyer if the numbers weren’t correct, especially in lieu of the low predictability of EPDs until significant progeny have been recorded on an animal.

So, we in our own herd use EPDs as a tool to predict the potential direction of traits, not in real or actual weight terms, but in terms of potential trends of certain traits. We encourage our customers to do the same. So if we are seeking to increase our yearling weights, we would want to seek sires that have a larger yearling weight EPD, if wanting to increase our calving ease, we would select sires with a higher CE and lower BW EPD, but knowing that we might sacrifice some yearling weight growth.

Also, at some point in time, the continued increase of some of these numbers will become ridiculous in both real numbers and practicality. For example, can yearling weight increase forever? Will we have 2000 lb. yearling weights some day?

The most accurate and proven calving ease bull in the Hereford breed to date is easily Churchill Sensation 028X, bred by Churchill Cattle Co., from Montana. However, the bull’s yearling weight EPD is only a +68, which is in the bottom 93% of the breed’s 2022 average. For the kind of cattle we are producing these

cattle have plenty of performance and growth for our low input environment, and we believe Hereford cattle in general have plenty of growth and performance, and still have too much frame size (thus we stay away from using bulls with above breed average growth traits), but Herefords still need improvement in calving ease and maternal traits compared to their Angus peers. Hereford fertility is far superior to Angus in our commercial herd, and we believe across the breed as a whole, and there is nothing tougher and longer lasting than a horned Hereford bull, but genetic improvement in the polled Hereford genome has rapidly accelerated in comparison to even a decade ago and has given the breed a chance of once again being as dominant as Angus cattle.

Below is the AHA’s explanation on EPDs, but once again we caution our customers to take with a grain of salt, any real actual weight comparison when using EPDs, but will be better served to look at the numbers in terms of trends towards more or less of any one given trait, with or without genomic data.

Understanding EPDs (by the AHA):

The American Hereford Association (AHA) currently produces expected progeny differences (EPDs) for 15 traits and calculates four profit ($) indexes. Research is ongoing to develop traits for fertility, feed intake and docility. Today, DNA-marker tests can be used to enhance the accuracy of Hereford EPDs. AHA blends marker information with phenotypic information and pedigree to produce a GE-EPD. Look for the GE-EPD logo denoting an animal has been tested. The current suite of Hereford EPDs and $ indexes includes:

Calving Ease – Direct (CE) CE EPD is based on calving ease scores and birth weights and is measured on a percentage. CE EPD indicates the influence of the sire on calving ease in females calving at 2 years of age. For example, if sire A has a CE EPD of 6 and sire B has a CE EPD of -2, then you would expect on average if comparably mated, sire A’s calves would be born with an 8% more likely chance of being unassisted when compared to sire B’s calves.

Birth Weight (BW) BW EPD is an indicator trait for calving ease and is measured in pounds. For example, if sire A has a BW EPD of 3.6 and sire B has a BW EPD of 0.6, than you would expect on average if comparably mated, sire A’s calves would come 3 lb. heavier at birth when compared to sire B’s calves. Larger BW EPDs usually, but not always, indicate more calving difficulty. The figure in parentheses found after each EPD is an accuracy value or reliability of the EPD.

WW EPD is an estimate of pre-weaning growth that is measured in pounds. For example, if sire A has a WW EPD of 60 and sire B has a WW EPD of 40, then you would expect on average if comparably mated, sire A’s calves would weigh 20 lb. heavier at weaning when compared to sire B’s calves.

Yearling Weight (YW) YW EPD is an estimate of post-weaning growth that is measured in pounds. For example, if sire A has a YW EPD of 100 and sire B has a YW EPD of 70, then you would expect on average if comparably mated, sire A’s calves would weigh 30 lb. heavier at a year of age when compared to sire B’s calves.

Maternal Milk (MM) The milking ability of a sire’s daughters is expressed in pounds of calf weaned. It predicts the difference in average weaning weights of sires’ daughters’ progeny due to milking ability. Daughters of the sire with a +14 MM EPD should produce progeny with 205-day weights averaging 24 lb. more (as a result of greater milk production) than daughters of a bull with a MM EPD of -10 lb. (14 minus -10.0 = 24 lb.). This difference in weaning weight is due to total milk production during the entire lactation.

Maternal Milk & Growth (M&G) Maternal Milk & Growth reflects what the sire is expected to transmit to his daughters for a combination of growth genetics through weaning and genetics for milking ability. It is an estimate of daughters’ progeny weaning weight. A bull with a 29 lb. M&G EPD should sire daughters with progeny weaning weights averaging 19 lb. heavier than progeny of a bull’s daughters with a M&G EPD of 10 lb. (29 minus 10 = 19 lb.). It is equal to one-half the sire’s weaning weight EPD, plus all of his MM

EPD. No accuracy is associated with this since it is simply a mathematical combination of two other EPDs. It is sometimes referred to as “total maternal” or “combined maternal.”

Maternal Calving Ease (MCE) MCE EPD predicts how easily a sires daughters will calve at 2 years of age and is measured on a percentage. For example, if sire A has a MCE EPD of 7 and sire B has a CE EPD of -3, then you would expect on average if comparably mated, sire A’s daughters would calve with a 10% more likely chance of being unassisted when compared to sire B’s daughters.

Mature Cow Weight (MCW) The MCW EPD was designed to help breeders select sires that will either increase or decrease mature size of cows in the herd. The trait was developed after years of cow weight data collection and the EPD relates directly to the maintenance requirements of a cow herd. For example, if sire A has a MCW EPD of 100 and sire B has an EPD of 85, then you would expect the females of sire A, if mated to similar cows, to be 15 lb. heavier at mature size.

Udder suspension (UDDR) UDDR EPDs are reported on a 9 (very tight) to 1 (very pendulous) scoring scale. Differences in sire EPDs predict the difference expected in the sires’ daughters’ udder characteristics when managed in the same environment. For example, if sire A has a UDDR EPD of 0.4, and sire B has a UDDR EPD of -0.1, the difference in the values is 0.5, or one-half of a score. If daughters of sires A and B are raised and managed in the same environment, you would expect half a score better udder suspension in daughters of sire A, compared to sire B.

Teat size (TEAT) TEAT EPDs are reported on a 9 (very small) to 1 (very large, balloon shaped) scoring scale. Differences in sire EPDs predict the difference expected in the sires’ daughters’ udder characteristics when managed in the same environment. For example, if sire A has a teat size EPD of 0.4, and sire B has a teat size EPD of -0.1, the difference in the values is 0.5, or one-half of a score. If daughters of sires A and B are raised and managed in the same environment, you would expect half a score smaller teat size in daughters of sire A, compared to sire B.

Scrotal circumference (SC) measured in centimeters and adjusted to 365 days of age, SC EPD is the best estimate of fertility. It is related to the bull’s own semen quantity and quality, and is also associated with age at puberty of sons and daughters. Larger SC EPDs suggest younger age at puberty. Yearling sons of a sire wth a .7 SC EPD should have yearling scrotal circumference measurements that average 0.7 centimeters (cm) larger than progeny by a bull with an EPD of 0.0 cm.

Carcass Weight (CW) Carcass weight is a beneficial trait when considering the impact that pounds have relative to end product value. At the same age constant endpoint, sires with higher values for carcass weight will add more pounds of hot carcass weight compared to sires with lower values for carcass weight. For example, if sire A has a CW EPD of 84 and sire B has a CW EPD 64, then you would expect the progeny of sire A, if harvested at the same age constant endpoint, to have a 20-lb. advantage in terms of hot carcass weight.

Rib Fat (FAT) The FAT EPD reflects differences in adjusted 365-day, 12thrib fat thickness based on carcass measurements of harvested cattle. Sires with low, or negative FAT EPDs are expected to produce leaner progeny than sires with higher EPDs. Ultrasound measures are also incorporated into this trait and have been shown to be highly correlated with the performance of slaughter progeny. All data is expressed on a carcass scale.

Ribeye Area (REA) REA EPDs reflect differences in an adjusted 365-day ribeye area measurement based on carcass measurements of harvested cattle. Sires with relatively higher REA EPDs are expected to produce better muscled and higher percentage yielding slaughter progeny than will sires with lower REA EPDs. Ultrasound measurements are also incorporated into this trait and have been shown to be highly correlated with the performance of slaughter progeny. All data is expressed on a carcass scale.

Marbling (MARB) MARB EPDs reflect differences in an adjusted 365-day marbling score (intramuscular fat, [IMF]) based on carcass measurements of harvested cattle. Breeding cattle with higher MARB EPDs should produce slaughter progeny with a higher degree of IMF and therefore higher quality grades. Ultrasound measurements are also incorporated into this trait and have been shown to be highly correlated with the performance of slaughter progeny. All data is expressed on a carcass scale.

Baldie Maternal Index (BMI$) BMI$ is a maternally focused index that has a production system based on 1,000-Hereford x Angus females with a progeny harvest endpoint directed toward Certified Hereford Beef (CHB®). This index is more critical of CE than the Brahman Influence Index (BII$) and also has significant weight on fertility. There is positive weight on WW and a slightly negative weight on YW, which promotes early growth and then a slow down on growth to keep mature size manageable. The emphasis of IMF is greater than the emphasis of REA. This is true because of the price difference of the Choice-Select spread and the fact that there is very little incentive to produce cattle better than a Yield Grade 3. This index is geared to service any commercial program that has British cross cows.

Calving Ease Index (CEZ$) This is a general purpose index that focuses on identifying bulls that can be used on heifers and then ultimately the calves will be marketed through the CHB program. As you might expect, CE and MCE carry significant weight in this index along with fertility. There is very little weight put on growth traits and less emphasis on carcass. Remember, this is a general index that is specifically designed to be used in a heifer program.

Brahman Influence Index (BII$) BII$ is a maternally focused index that is based on a 1,000-head cow herd of Brahman x Hereford cows. The progeny for this index will be harvested in a commodity-based system since CHB does not accept Brahman-influenced cattle into the program. This index has less emphasis for CE than any of the other indexes. There is emphasis on both REA and IMF since the cattle will be harvested through a commodity market. The largest emphasis is in fertility, which is measured solely by SC at the present time. Obviously, the target for this index is the producers in the Southern regions of the U.S. where the bulls are typically sold to commercial cattlemen that have Brahman-influenced cow herds.

Certified Hereford Beef Index (CHB$) This is a terminal sire index that is built on a production system where Hereford bulls sire calves for the CHB market. There is some pressure put on CE and then positive weight on both WW and YW. Remember that all offspring in this index are harvested, so they need to be born alive and then grow fast at all stages of life. Of course, we have much more emphasis on fat in this index, as we want the cattle to stay lean. There is also a significant weight on both REA and IMF with more emphasis again on IMF. This index would be used by producers who have a target of producing bulls for a terminal breeding program. It could be used heavily in the Midwest where bulls are used in rotational breeding programs to produce cattle in a retained ownership program or are simply sold to backgrounders. This is the only index that has no emphasis on fertility. Remember that nothing is retained in the herd.
