On behalf of the entire crew at RS Angus, I would like to take this opportunity to invite you to our annual bull and female sale. It would be an honor to have you join us in Dodge City at the Western State Bank Expo Center both on Thursday evening for a preview and Friday, February 24, for the sale.

As I evaluate the offering for this year’s sale, I can’t help but get excited. I believe we have an outstanding and very deep offering of bulls and females. It reminds me of the saying “the cream rises to the top.” Pardon me while I digress, but as a kid growing up in Western Colorado some 50 years ago, I never used to like cream. My dad always kept a couple milk cows around to provide milk for the family. The resulting milk always had a thick layer of cream on it. I did my best to avoid the cream in my glass or on my cereal. However, today I am enjoying the cream as it rises to the top.

The Lot 1 bull in this year’s sale just keeps rising to the top. He is a very impressive individual, both in person and on paper. I believe it will be worth the trip to come see him. The success that we had with RSA True Balance 1311 last year was great and continues to be. I’m looking forward to seeing what “1344” can do.

We continue to work hard every day to make “good ones.” With the use of DNA testing, the rapid progress in the Angus business has been phenomenal. Numbers continue to go higher and higher. But we have not lost sight of the important traits that keep us and you in business. Selection for traits like good feet and disposition are still very important in our genetic choices.

Marbling still matters. The premiums for high quality Angus-based genetics continue to amaze me. In this same letter last year, I commented about premiums over $300/hd for finished cattle sold on the US Premium Beef grid. This past fall we saw those numbers even higher. Exceeding $500/hd in some cases. My tagline “In the black” might need to be changed to say, “In the Green!” It’s always been my goal to produce genetics that can make you money.
