Pretty exciting times to be in the beef business might be an understatement to say the least. It was a severe grind to stay hooked and get us this far. Optimism is the word that comes to mind. Moisture has been in abundance this winter and the long range forecast looks like that trend will continue going forward. Cow inventory’s are at an all-time low, which is setting us up for record calf demand and prices to follow suit.

Strategy - A plan of actual design to achieve an overall aim/goal. What is your aim/goal? The ranches that will thrive in these times have to have a strategy, a strategy of genetics for maintaining sustainability in this business. Positioning your cowherd’s genetics will help you reap the rewards now and down the road. A strategy of marketing your product, steers and heifers, or retaining your product, replenishing your cowherd with known genetics. Marketing your product…74% of the bulls cataloged have met the CAB Targeting the Brand requirements. Basically the bulls carrying the CAB logo in the catalog, 50% of their offspring will grade CAB or higher, (industry average is 25% of Registered Angus bulls born). That’s huge premiums for cattle feeders and they realize there is a difference and they are willing to pay for it. The last 4 years we have had 100’s of cattle sired by our bulls consistently bring $100+/head premiums over commodity cattle that sold in the same sale barn on the same day. Replenishing your herd, keeping heifers out of known genetics is certainly the easiest way of building uniformity. Type and kind, whether you’re needing to ad frame or lower frame there are bulls here to do it, add milk or take milk away, there are bulls here to do it.

We are proud to announce that all bulls have been evaluated by Flying Cow Genetics using iSperm technology. ISperm digitally records the semen sample on an iPad while instantly grading the motility and concentration. Morphology is evaluated manually but on a high resolution image that is much more reliable and accurate than a typical microscope evaluation.

All bulls selling have passed a Breeding Soundness Exam and have been deemed Satisfactory Breeders by Flying Cow Genetics. The bulls will not be guaranteed to freeze semen for the purposes of Artificial Insemination, Flushing, or IVF.

If the bull is injured within the first breeding season (in case of bulls making them functionally infertile) we will provide you a satisfactory replacement after you bring the bull back in suitable condition or issue a credit (salvage value) minus purchased price toward the purchase of any natural causes or physical harm. There will be mortality insurance available at the clerks desk if you choose to insure you purchases. Breeding season is defined as the 90-day period following the first turn out date of the bulls. If you do not intend bull(s) for some time after the purchase, we suggest and additional BSE by a licensed Veterinarian to assure the highest conception rates possible. We suggest normal management practices in caring for your cattle.

PRODUCTION EPDs

Calving Ease Direct (CED), is expressed as a difference in percentage of unassisted births, with a higher value indicating greater calving ease in firstcalf heifers. It predicts the average difference in ease with which a sire’s calves will be born when he is bred to first-calf heifers.

Birth Weight EPD (BW), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit birth weight to his progeny compared to that of other sires.

Weaning Weight EPD (WW), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit weaning growth to his progeny compared to that of other sires.

Yearling Weight EPD (YW), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit yearling growth to his progeny compared to that of other sires.

Residual Average Daily Gain (RADG), expressed in pounds per day, is a predictor of a sire’s genetic ability for postweaning gain in future progeny compared to that of other sires, given a constant amount of feed consumed. Scrotal Circumference EPD (SC), expressed in centimeters, is a predictor of the difference in transmitting ability for scrotal size compared to that of other sires.

Docility (Doc), is expressed as a difference in yearling cattle temperament, with a higher value indicating more favorable docility. It predicts the average difference of progeny from a sire in comparison with another sire’s calves. In herds where temperament problems are not an issue, this expected difference would not be realized.

FOOT SCORE EPDs

Claw Set EPD (Claw), is expressed in units of claw-set score, with a lower EPD being more favorable indicating a sire will produce progeny with more ideal claw set. The ideal claw set is toes that are symmetrical, even and appropriately spaced.

Foot Angle EPD (Angle), is expressed in units of foot-angle score, with a lower EPD being more favorable indicating a sire will produce progeny with more ideal foot angle. The ideal is a 45-degree angle at the pastern joint with appropriate toe length and heel depth.

MATERNAL EPDs

Heifer Pregnancy (HP), is a selection tool to increase the probability or chance of a sire’s daughters becoming pregnant as first-calf heifers during a normal breeding season. A higher EPD is the more favorable direction and the EPD is reported in percentage units.

Maternal Milk EPD (Milk), is a predictor of a sire’s genetic merit for milk and mothering ability as expressed in his daughters compared to daughters of other sires. In other words, it is that part of a calf’s weaning weight attributed to milk and mothering ability.

CARCASS EPDs

Carcass Weight EPD (CW), expressed in pounds is a predictor of the differences in hot carcass weight of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other sires.

Marbling EPD (Marb), expressed as a fraction of the difference in USDA marbling score of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other sires.

Ribeye Area EPD (RE), expressed in square inches, is a predictor of the difference in ribeye area of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other sires.

Ribeye Area EPD (RE), expressed in square inches, is a predictor of the difference in ribeye area of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other sires.

$VALUE INDEXES

Maternal Weaned Calf Value ($M), an index, expressed in dollars per head, predicts profitability differences from conception to weaning with the underlying breeding objective assuming that individuals retain their own replacement females within herd and sell the rest of the cull female and all male progeny as feeder calves. The model assumes commercial producers will replace 25% of their breeding females in the first generation and 20% of their breeding females in each subsequent generation. Traits included are as follows: calving ease direct, calving ease maternal, weaning weight, milk, heifer pregnancy, docility, mature cow weight, claw set and foot angle. Weaned Calf Value ($W), an index, expressed in dollars per head, to predict profitability differences in progeny due to genetics from birth to weaning. The underlying objective being producers will retain 20% of the female progeny as replacements and sell the rest of the cull females and their male counterparts as feeder calves. Traits included are as follows (in no particular order): birth weight, weaning weight, milk, and mature cow weight.

Grid Value ($G), an index, expressed in dollars per carcass, to predict profitability differences in progeny due to genetics for carcass grid merit compared to progeny of other sires. The underlying objective assumes producers will market cattle on an above-industry-average carcass grid. Traits included in the index are as follows (in no particular order): carcass weight, marbling, ribeye area, and fat.

Beef Value ($B), a terminal index, expressed in dollars per carcass, to predict profitability differences in progeny due to genetics for postweaning and carcass traits. This terminal index assumes commercial producers wean all male and female progeny, retain ownership of these animals through the feedlot phase and market these animals on a carcass grid. Traits included in the index are as follows: yearling weight, dry-matter intake, marbling, carcass weight, ribeye area and fat.

Combined Value ($C), expressed in dollars per head, is an index which includes all traits that make up both Maternal Weaned Calf Value ($M) and Beef Value ($B) with the objective that commercial producers will replace 20% of their breeding females per year with replacement heifers retained within their own herd.

For the Zoetis HD i50K for Angus percentile rankings, a lower value indicates a more favorable ranking for the trait. For example, a smaller numeric percentile ranking for Zoetis result in birth weight and carcass fat indicates lighter calves and leaner carcasses as the expectation.

If you are making selection decisions for traits that have an EPD provided by the Association, then the EPD should be considered the selection tool of choice. The EPD and accuracy account for all sources of information available on the animal of interest (e.g., pedigree, own record, weights/measures, genomic results). Using EPD and genomic percentiles separately leads to double counting information and will lessen selection efficiency.

TURN IN BIDS OVER THE PHONE

This is Superior’s traditional method of buying cattle and is the suggested process for anybody who does not have consistent, high-speed internet. You still must register an account at Bid. SuperiorLivestock.com and request a buyer number. Once you receive a buyer number you will see the bid line phone number. Just watch the auction online and call in at least 2 lots ahead of the lot you are looking to bid on. A Superior Livestock representative will be with you on the phone and will assist you in placing bids.
