Welcome to Waukaru!
Thank you for taking a moment to look through The Gathering 2024 offering. All of us here at Waukaru understand that finding a genetic provider is not difficult; the challenge is to find a genetic provider that is as passionate about your success in the beef industry. Every decision made throughout the year at Waukaru is prefaced by “will this make a better, more profitable outcome for our customer?” We challenge ourselves to be the source for solutions, and the place for answers.
WOW! This run the last 18-24 months in the beef industry have been exciting. As cow-calf producers, we are gaining leverage not seen in a long time. A few things we know to be truths: this cycle will be longer, and slower to top than previous cycles. Consumer demand is higher than any other time in history. The genetic material invested in now will pull an operation through changing times; and times will change.
At last look, the US Beef Industry is still in the liquidation phase. We will have fewer females to breed tomorrow than we did yesterday. This pushes back expected market highs another 18-24 months. Never forget: it will be 48 months before a heifer calf born this spring produces a finished steer. The genetics an operation adds now will contribute to more years of profit than any other time. Also, sending a mature bull to town now, gets closer to the purchase price of new, more profitable genetics than ever before.
Now is the time to invest in cattle that make more money. The daughters of the bulls selling this March 16, 2024 will be in the prime of their life and will generate the most value when they are actually 5-7 year olds, and lining up with when the calf market is predicted to be softer. Randy Blach of CattleFax said last January that “all of the increase in demand that this industry has realized since 1998 is reflected in the high quality cattle that grade low choice or higher.” Now is the time to invest in genetically superior cattle that fit these market demands and yield daughters that are poised to generate profit in the future.
The run of bulls in this group are better than ever. Realize that pressure has been put in place to keep mature weight in check and reasonable. Understandably, it took patience and steadfast diligence to adjust, as we would not sacrifice growth along the way. This group has more high marbling genetics than before. These selections were made carefully, and new genetics sought that would not lower muscle for the sake of simply measuring with more intramuscular fat. Pressures for structural soundness, maternal instincts, fleshing ability have, and will, continue to be at the forefront at Waukaru. Here and now, as always, the cow must work for us every day.
This group of replacement females is off the charts. These cattle are from producers that are more excited to breed the best cattle possible than any you can find. All of them thrive with this challenge. The heifers were developed with the goal of utilizing low quality forages to wean a profitable calf. These females are ready to breed, and ready to work for you. We could not be more proud to have partners like the Sproul, Sneed, Bullington and Conard Families.
We hope you can make it to Waukaru on March 16, 2024 to witness the largest one day event in our history. We will continue to update our website with ultrasound information, videos, and additional pictures as they become available. Please check www.waukaru.net for details. SmartAuctions will provide an online bidding platform; if this is not convenient for you, call us and we will accommodate. Reach out anytime with questions on the cattle selling; we always enjoy the visit.

By no surprise, he lands in the top 2$ of the non-parent population for STAY; his maternal great granddam is due to calve again this spring at the age of 12 and has weaned a calf on time every year. In fact, Red Nan 2181 has produced five bulls so far, all in service in northern California, Tennessee, Wyoming, and Indiana. We have kept all of her daughters back as replacements.
Understandably, when Denver 3028 dropped he caught our attention. Early in life, everyone at Waukaru knew he was bound to be an important herd sire. Denver 3028 is sired by our senior herd sire, Waukaru Latigo 0033, who has quickly established himself as the most consistent generator of performance, pattern, and power we have seen here. Denver 3028 brings forth an impressive set of EPDs, landing above the top 25% of the population for 13 traits. Impressively, Denver 3028 is able to combine calving ease with growth, marbling with muscle, and land in the top 1% of the breed for STAY. Visually, Denver 3028 impresses because of his balance and soundness combined with power and mass. Recently, Denver 3028 was named Reserve Grand Bull at the EDGE show in Oklahoma City, and a member of the Grand Champion Pen of Three at the National Pen show in Oklahoma City. His dam is launching her own story; her first son is in use here, and weighed right at 1300 lbs. last fall.

50 FANCY COMMERCIAL HEIFERS
We are excited about the four runs of commercial heifers we’re adding to this line-up. These heifers will sell in the same format as the bulls on SmartAuctions, and are ready to breed this spring. If the new owner chooses, they can be left at Waukaru to be synchronized and artificially inseminated. For $150 per month, Waukaru will cover all feed, drug and labor costs, and provide semen on any heifer-safe sires in the Waukaru bull battery.
Group A is from Conard Cattle of west central Kansas. The Conards turn bulls out to single sire breeding pastures for 60 days on the mature cows, and 45 days on the heifer replacements. Anything that is open is culled; fertility has been a key selection criteria for many generations. Shorthorn genetics have been used for over 100 years, then in 2018 Red Angus sires were also included. For their Shorthorn and Red Angus bulls, Conards select sires that are above average in CED and below breed average for birthweight, while at average for WW and YW. They shoot for the top 1/3 of each breed for Marbling and Ribeye area EPDs, while frame score of near 5 is used to control mature size. Twenty females from Conard Cattle are presented, including five Red Angus-sired heifers from Shorthorn dams.
Group B is from Sproul Livestock in northwest Oklahoma at Isabella. These cattle were born and developed on land that has been in the family since the Land Run of 1893. Sproul Livestock is a commercial cow-calf operation focused on developing high quality replacement females and market-topping steer calves. The cow herd is comprised of moderate sized, Red Angus and Red Angus x Shorthorn females who offer plenty of capacity and depth of body. The red sandhills of Major County require cattle to be sound, while the limited rainfall and feed resources demand efficiency. The Waukaru bull genetics utilized have proven to complement Sprouls’ program by maximizing both the maternal and growth characteristics necessary for a profitable operation. This group of 12 heifers are sired by sons of Thermal Energy and Prime Time Teddy.
Group C is a run of 15 heifers from our neighbor, Randy Bulington of Monon, IN. Randy started buying Waukaru bulls over 20 years ago, and he has converted his Angus and Hereford-based cowherd to Shorthorn by keeping back the best Shorthorn-sired daughters. Currently, Bulington is using a Prime Time Teddy grandson and it has really worked. The Bulington cowherd summers on mixed fescue pasture on droughty sand and a bit of Reed Canary Grass in some wet areas. Often the cattle will be supplemented with plant by-products to get to the available cornstalk and rye winter grazing ground. Fifteen heifers will be available from Randy Bulington.
Group D is from Jim and Stephanie Sneed of Ashland Farms in Sedalia, MO. Jim and Stephanie have always maintained a practical approach to raising Shorthorn cattle on the rolling hills and shallow soils of central Missouri. The local fescue pastures dictate that Sneeds produce cattle who will shed hair quickly in the spring, are moderate in their mature size, and have plenty of capacity to utilize this forage base. Sneeds’ are to receive very little for supplements; they depend on the growing pasture, stockpiled forage stands, and home raised fescue hay to complete the calendar. Fifteen commercial Shorthorns are in group D, sired by sons of Thermal Energy and Byland Top Gun.
