The BVI has a vast array of events throughout the year, but none are as vibrant, colourful or meaningful as the Emancipation Festival. Held in late July and early August, this annual festival celebrates the 1834 Emancipation Act which abolished slavery in the British West Indies. The festival is a time for everyone to congregate and rejoice in the freedoms that were fought for by the islands’ ancestors.

Parties and celebrations are held far and wide and activities include live music performances, dancing, street art, donkey and horse races, a freedom march, emancipation church services, boat races, parties, and parades. The centre of the festival is the purpose-built pop-up village in Road Town, Tortola which has a number of bandstands and an array of food-stalls and bars. The atmosphere is captivating and not to be missed; however, those living in Road Town and the central south side of the island can find themselves going without sleep as the partying is loud and steady for nearly two weeks. If you need to get up for work (which some residents may do despite the holiday) or if you have youngsters in the house, the following tips might help with sound control.

This 143-foot super yacht has a history of ground-breaking speeds and attractive design features. In 1988, with the yacht’s lightweight aluminium hull and superstructure, she recorded a top speed of over 53 knots; that’s over 60 mph. Now after a complete refit in 2015, she boasts a cruising speed of 25 knots in complete comfort and style. There’s a modern anti-roll stabilising mechanism installed to ensure a smooth and comfortable charter vacation and the designers have managed to limit the draft to an amazing 5-feet whereby shallow anchorages and bays can be accessed with ease. Octopussy is equipped with an array of fun toys including a 32-foot Intrepid chase boat, water skis, wake boards, stand up paddle boards and a good selection of the latest fishing equipment. Emancipation is traditionally celebrated throughout the English

After the turn of the century and the end of the First World War, the emancipation event started to expand and picnics would be held at different villages throughout the Territory during the first week in August. Bands would move around and play at the different locations,

In 1952, the coronation of Queen Elizabeth was celebrated in Road Town on August Monday with a big parade. It was so successful that it was decided to have a festival celebration every year with a grand parade on August Monday and a water sports day on Tuesday, featuring sloop racing and aquatic events such as a greased pole and swimming competitions. winners highly coveted. These races continued on until the late 1960s, when wooden boat building and trade with sail ended. It is interesting to note that one of the primary reasons for this decline was the introduction of refrigeration to St. Thomas. No longer was there a need for beef to be transported live on the hoof from the BVI. Emancipation Festival celebrations continued to grow, but the sloop races became a memory. Slowly, the existing sloops were left rotting on the beaches. Transport moved on to use steel barges and a whole generation of traditional wooden boat builders—the last generation—began to disappear. With them went their knowledge and skills lost to future generations to come.

highlighted by a race between our Hon. Premier and H.E. the Governor. We know of no other place where the two heads of state square off against each other to compete in a race on the water and it has made news all over the world. Although our festival sloop races cannot compare to the level of participation found in Anguilla or Grenada, we are still holding our own and who knows, perhaps a new generation will rise up to the call.

Jump Up for Fresh Fish The Caribbean islands are world-famous for many things, especially that jovial time of year known as Carnival – a celebration of emancipation. While everyone celebrates for different reasons, the spirit of the festivities is alive and contagious. Calypsostyle music can be heard on every street with the unique sounds of the steel drums and island-style lyrics. Vivid costumes are worn to accentuate the bright energy of the music, alongside choreographed dances to mesmerise the crowds. Through this rich cultural celebration, one can see a long story of love and pride, and the talent exhibited extends through to the kitchen. Delicious, aromatic flavours join the party and continue to prove the power of culture among Virgin Islanders and their exceptional history. A favourite carnival food in particular is a fried fish, fresh-caught by local fishermen. Here’s a delicious recipe for Jump Up Grouper Bites with Piña Colada Sauce.

Ingredients 2 tbsp butter 1 medium onion, chopped 4 cloves garlic, minced 1 tbsp fresh-grated ginger ¾ cup aged rum ½ cup cream of coconut ½ cup pineapple juice ¾ cup crushed fresh pineapple 1 tsp chili pepper flakes ¼ tsp salt 2 tbsp fresh cilantro, chopped 2 lbs fresh grouper fillets (or firm white fish) 2 limes, juiced Salt and pepper 1 cup flour 1 cup cornmeal 1/4 cup milk 2 eggs, beaten Coconut oil for frying Fresh basil, chopped 2 limes, cut into quarters
Directions:
In a saucepan, melt butter and sautée onions, garlic, and ginger until lightly brown. Deglaze pan with aged rum and let alcohol cook off. Mix in cream of coconut, pineapple juice, chopped pineapple, chili flakes, and salt. Simmer until reduced and sauce covers the back of a metal spoon. Mix in fresh cilantro and set aside to cool. Cut grouper fillets into strips; season with salt, pepper, and lime. Heat several inches of coconut oil to 375ºF. Use extra care with hot oil! Beat together the milk and eggs and dip the fish strips; then coat with flour, removing excess. Fry until golden brown on

FINALLY, not a yacht I got to appreciate hands-on myself, but I’m certain by its phenomenal appearance that it is quite the sensation. t’s no simple task finding resources to educate children about the history of the BVI.
For Scott Taylor—who’d lived in the region with his wife and children for
over six years—he noticed the void in materials to unveil the BVI’s exciting history for kids. With an extensive background in graphic design for children, he created Newbie Junior with aLooking Glass in 2015 to provide facts and activities for infants/juniors; a book that exhibited what they can see and do in the BVI. Thoroughly enjoying this project, his passion to make certain that children have a plethora of educational resources was ignited…and so, Pirate Islands was conceived.
Conception “Pirate Islands provides a fun educational resource through poems and puzzles for kids, visiting and living in the BVI,” said Scott. Through sponsorship from ATU General Trust BVI, his ambition was made concrete. With illustrations completed by the same studio responsible for Newbie Junior, readers will be met with swashbuckling rogues who escort them through the BVI’s plundering past, keeping focus on the history and unique features of the individual islands within the Territory.

Inspiration From foundation of Newbie Junior, Scott had gained knowledge of the BVI’s marine, plant, and animal life as well as its history – with this abundance of information, he decided to create Pirate Islands and is optimistic about establishing a brand that will grow to become the fun resource for kids in the BVI. “The main inspiration for creating this book was my two boys and their friends in the BVI,” said Scott, highlighting the fuel behind his fire. “As we went on adventures, trips, and did activities on a weekly basis, I quickly realised that there was no literature for their age group that covered the amazing islands that we called home. I would always make up stories to get their imaginations going when we were on boats, at the beach, or walking the trails on a hike, so from there I thought about fusing the ‘make-belief’ with ‘reality.’” A crucial attractive point about this fact-fiction book is that children will recognise many of the locations found within its pages, and Scott hopes it will inspire them to discover the other islands with their families. “I suspect book buyers will be parents motivated to enjoy family activity even more, by perhaps reading the poems to their kids that illuminate familiar BVI locations, history, features, and creatures,” said Scott of the book’s audience. “It has fun pirate inspired characters that live on each of the islands, introducing readers to the world around them and things they may not know, influencing family day excursions to explore and discover what they read.” bvipropertyyacht.com

Future “A second book titled Pirate Islands, Wonders of the Deep, is currently in development and due for release later in the year,” said Scott of the future for the Pirate Island brand. Following the pirate characters from the first book and a few innovative ones, the volume takes its audience on underwater adventures showcasing the amazing marine world of the BVI. With games and facts central to educating kids on the animals and plant life of the islands, readers will be presented with tips on what they can do to preserve the natural environment of the BVI. Currently, Pirate Islands is on sale through Arawak’s three main Arawak Surf locations—Nanny Cay, Soper’s Hole, and Leverick Bay—the Moorings gift shop, Foxy’s Taboo on Jost Van Dyke, and at the boutiques in Cooper Island and Peter Island. Along with the book, there is an activity poster map of the BVI featuring pirate ships, sea monsters, and a detailed layout of all the islands and bays. The book is also available to download on iPad as an interactive ibook in the online Apple Store.
