From the Editor The year is already speeding on, but the momentum didn’t stop for VIPY over Christmas and New Year as we prepared ourselves for a fruitful 2016. Now we’re looking to Valentine’s Day, next will be Spring Break and the abundance of yacht regattas, then the summer season. We at VIPY believe the direction to take in these fast paced times we live in, is to sometimes take no action at all. Appreciate the moment. If possible, and this is a big ‘IF,’ put down the camera. Enjoy life and be grateful for what’s on offer – this should be especially easy if you’re living in or visiting the British Virgin Islands. Just glancing at what we have this issue, testifies to the countless amenities that inspire joy. For February, we revisit the tranquillity of Villa Katsura; situated on Virgin Gorda, this property is serenity personified through its insightful design, blending Asian influence with the Caribbean environs. The second in a three-part series. PART 1 in October 2015 issue

We all need to save money more than ever; but why not choose to save the world at the same time? aTec—who are currently leading the ‘power revolution’ in the BVI—are a company advocating the benefits of alternative energy solutions that not only conserve finances, but contribute to the preservation of the globe’s natural resources. Keeping abreast of the latest technological advances, aTec provide a

Off-Grid Options aTec advise that any individual who would like to build their home or business in a remote location, can create their own power with ready-formarket products at a cost that makes this a viable option. “Now, companies like Outback Power are in competition with SMA, Schneider Electric, and Tesla for off-grid systems and they are becoming more user friendly and simple to operate,” said Dana. Off-grid systems can establish the grid voltage and frequency, and integrate several forms of the previously mentioned energy sources to create reliable electricity for a home, business, or community.

A new battery bank installation using Aquion Energy—aqueous-hybrid-batteries is in the works at Cooper Island Beach Club, which aTec hopes to have completed by the end of May this year. The BVI has the opportunity to reduce its costs for energy production by forming smaller grids at strategic locations around the islands. “The outlying islands are already doing so,” said Dana. “Residences, resorts, and businesses in the BVI can also create their own micro-grids for power generation and look forward to a future where power is independently owned, operated, and less costly.”

Battery Options New battery technologies are creating an innovative future for the industry. “The financial and environmental implications of lithium ion and aqueous hybrid technologies are huge,” said Dana. “Lead-acid batteries are still the most common battery to find in renewable energy systems on the small scale. At the larger scale, the movement is toward lithium ion batteries and a very new battery technology called aqueous-hybrid or colloquially as salt-water batteries. The Aqueous-Hybrid batteries use a saline solution surrounding a carbon and synthetic cotton core. These batteries work well in warm weather climates, have a long life span, and require very little maintenance.”

If you are interested in the possibility of solar power in your home or business and would like to discuss the options please contact aTec www.atecbvi.com https://www.facebook.com/atecbvi Mobile: +1 284 340 3409 I Office: +1 284 495 0005 bvipropertyyacht.com

As a 18-acre waterfront retreat situated on the island, White Bay Villas and Seaside Cottages has numerous options for activities and entertainment, while retaining the authentic island culture. If seeking serenity accompanied by homely hospitality, a stay at White Bay Villas and Seaside Cottages—voted the BVI’s Best Resort, Hotel/Accommodation at the 2015 Readers’ Choice Awards—is the prime selection. About 40 years ago, a young John Klein who loved JVD was sailing in the Caribbean. He purchased land in the tropical hotspot, made it his home, and built the beginnings of White Bay Villas with what is now known as the Plantation Villa. He visualised a long-term ecofriendly dream for the property, which he still oversees. Eight new one-bedroom cottages were recently approved by government with construction set to commence in 2016, and will be available in the 2016-2017 season. Accompanying their development is a plan for an on-site upscale Currently, the resort includes 12 separate private buildings, with sizes ranging from one to four bedrooms, all delivering outstanding views of White Bay, St John, St Thomas, and Tortola. Three cosy, open-plan one-bedroom units—the Seaside Cottages—give prime access to the beach down the property’s private trail. Elevated and nestled within the colourful flora and exotic fruit trees, the four two-bedroom Hillside Villas present a truly tropical ambiance. Just a short jaunt down to White Bay, the beach is lined with an array of beach-bars by day, which transform into candlelit dining establishments at night. This spot is a favourite for day charters and is home to the Territory’s signature drink, ‘The Painkiller.’ A five minute drive, or 15 minute walk, Great Harbour is another entertainment hub, with restaurants featuring live music and dancing as the vibe kicks up a notch in the evenings. White Bay Villas and Jost Van Dyke are being promoted as ‘The Last Virgin Island,’ the final isle that still conveys the authentic Caribbean aesthetic and way of life. “We take pride in drawing our guests into adventures and local experiences they may not have thought of enjoying, and we delight in seeing the travellers relishing their new discoveries,” said managers Debbie and Chris.

An incredible yacht charter company

maintains success by following two obligatory factors flawlessly – provision of fantastic vessels and amazing customer service; however, in the BVI’s highly competitive yacht industry, there are many charter companies delivering these amenities. So, what were the aspects that allowed MarineMax Vacations receipt of Best BVI Yacht Charter company in the latest VIPY Readers’ Choice Awards vote? There are a number of compelling reasons that explain their position as our readers’ most loved charter company. Birthed as a division of MarineMax, they have the benefit of developing from the world’s largest boating retailer with over 40 years of yachting experience, 55 national stores, and the fame of being a publically traded company. Their objective is to continually expand the MarineMax concept of

‘providing a world-class boating experience with a team that is passionate about the boating lifestyle and sharing it with others.’ Run by industry veterans, the company has introduced the first fleet of pure-bred power cats to the BVI market. This has appealed to the experienced BVI charterer and broadened the market appeal, inviting new boaters to the yacht charter experience. “We are the only company in the BVI to feature the pure-bred Aquila power cats,” said Marketing Manager Jody Krebs. “The innovative awardwinning power catamaran with features and designs that can’t be found on converted sailing cats.” Industry leaders Aquila Yachts set a new standard in power catamarans for both the charter industry and private ownership options. equipment housed outside of the hulls for a quiet living experience. Comprising MarineMax’s ‘mission to deliver an extraordinary boating experience aboard the finest yachts available,’ the Aquila cats possess spacious living areas and cabins, solid hull build and design, watermakers, electric flush heads with separate shower stalls, fashionable oversized flybridges with direct forward access to the bow—perfect for grabbing mooring balls—zoned a/c controls for living comfort, and free WIFI dedicated to the boat. “We are very excited to be awarded this designation after just four years of delivering our first charter,” said Raul Bermudez, Vice President of MarineMax Vacations, who recognised they had fierce competition among 13 other nominees in the Readers’ Choice. “Having a commitment to deliver an exceptional charter experience to every guest not only with our award winning innovative yachts, but also with our personal service to every guest has been our driving force since inception. We are not the oldest or the largest charter company in the BVI, so it is a tremendous honour to be recognised as the Best BVI Yacht Charter Company this year among the respected companies we were up against.” Although greatly pleased to win the 2015 Readers’ Choice award, MarineMax Vacations greatest pleasure comes in the form of guest testimonials, amazed at their boating vacation: “Truly a magical vacation! The team at MarineMax runs a first class operation. The MarineMax 484 is the perfect vessel for touring the BVI’s…I also want to mention along with all of the amenities, this was one of the easiest boats I have ever captained…Special thanks to the planning team for the pre-trip info (every stop was incredible) and the local team in the BVI’s! Can’t wait to do it all over again next year!”- Ryan H. With the organisation’s first-class ethos with every customer, MarineMax Vacations will maintain a strong hold on the trophy as VIPY readers’ top yacht charter company. “As the charter division continues its endeavours, it’s very gratifying to see familiar MarineMax families, some returning for their fourth MarineMax charter vacation, on the docks and to welcome new guests just ready to experience a boating vacation on a new level,” concluded Jody.

Peach at the B each

Leading up to Spring in the BVI brings a proverbial atmosphere of friskiness and flirtation that is only natural. The air is fragrant with flowers in bloom; the mother hens are diligently keeping track of their fluffy, young chicks; and all the picturesque sea creatures entertain us as they attract mates with their bright, colourful patterns. Love is not only in the air, but also in the sea, and on it for that matter. Charter yachts all over the Territory are busier than ever, hosting guests eager to celebrate life and love out on BVI waters. On-board Lolalita, Captain Ernie has performed many marriage ceremonies as well as vow renewals for couples of all ages. The pure, quintessential feeling of love is addictive. One vow renewal was particularly memorable, as this was their fourth time getting married to each other. The husband coordinated with Ernie and asked him to help facilitate this special moment. His words to his wife were: “I will be thankful for you each day. I will trust, respect and be faithful to you. I will laugh, cry and stick by your side regardless of what obstacles comes our way. I promise to cherish, provide, care for, and protect you. Most of all, I will always love you.” To celebrate their renewed commitment to each other, I created a special dessert by request; something I had never made before. From beginning to end, it was an unforgettable experience.

Peach Upside Down Cakes ½ cup butter 1 cup brown sugar 6 fresh peaches, pitted, sliced into half-moons 1 cup sifted cake flour 1 tsp baking powder ¼ tsp salt ¼ tsp ground clove 1 cup white sugar

sugar together until light yellow. Fold both egg mixtures into each other, adding in melted butter and vanilla bean paste. Fold eggs into dry ingredients

• In eight individual ramekins, evenly spoon out peaches. Slowly pour in cake batter to cover peaches. Bake in a water bath for about 30 minutes, or until cakes are turning brown on top and a knife stuck into the cake comes out clean. Let cool to room temperature

• While the cakes are baking, whip together heavy cream and powdered sugar. Keep in the refrigerator to keep cool. Also, in a sauce pan on medium heat, whisk together brown sugar, half-and-half, butter, and salt until mixture thickens, about 20 minutes. Remove from heat and whisk in vanilla. Set aside to cool

• To serve, turn the ramekins upside down onto a plate to ‘pop’ them out. If the cake tops are curved, take a bread knife and take off some of the top so the cakes sit flatter. Sprinkle your serving plates with powdered sugar and place each cake on a plate, upside down, with the peaches on the top. Drizzle cakes with caramel sauce and top with whipped cream and a cherry.

LIFE Words by Lauren Charley Photography by Alastair Abrehart -Broadsword Communications and Anya Brewley Schultheiss

ARTISTS’ CORNER -

The music stopped and the DJ introduced the audience to the highlight of their evening’s entertainment. In the crowd of over 300 guests, heads turned one by one to watch the beautiful dancer as the music continued and she moved gracefully within long ribbons of silk fabric, suspended 50ft in the air. Amanda Georges of The BVI Dance School stole the show at Virgin Islands Property & Yacht’s Readers’ Choice Awards toward the end of 2015, performing her extraordinary aerial silk routine. Born and raised in the Southern Caribbean island of Trinidad, Amanda began her passion for dance at the young age of four. Because Amanda’s feet had low arches, it was recommended that she be enrolled in ballet classes as it is known to help issues related to flat feet. Between the age of 4 – 16, Amanda continued to train at the Caribbean School of Dance in Trinidad, where she expanded her expertise to include a plethora of dancing styles with a heavy focus on ballet technique. Amanda obtained her formal education at the University of South Florida in Tampa where she earned degrees in both Accounting and Dance. “A dance degree exposes you to a lot: theatre, back stage, costumes, lighting, sound. We made our own video resume, learned the editing software, studied dance techniques, and of course, you learn to teach,” said the multi-talented dancer.

44

VI PROPERTY & YACHT

Published by aLookingGlass Ltd.

In addition to the traditional styles of dance, Amanda has challenged herself emerging certified to teach dance and movement classes not offered elsewhere in the Territory. “I have been thrilled to choreograph, dance and create new work as coartistic director of the Cada Players: Steppin Out, Ringmaster, African Dream, and Kaleidoscope. Another outlet for creativity has been teaching and choreographing kids at the BVI Dance School. When I came to Tortola in in 2010, I realised there is a great interest in trying new things here. For me, I love to be able to present residents of the islands with new and interesting activities,” said Amanda. New for 2016, Amanda will offer Gyrokinesis, which is “a form of movement with origins in yoga, Thai chi, and dance. It trains your body to move in a more organic way, increases mobility of the joints and stimulates and strengthens the nervous system.” Also, she will soon offer aerial yoga. The BVI community recognises Amanda for her talented aerial silk performances. Aerial silk is a type of performance from the 1970’s where the dancer uses long ribbons of silk to perform acrobatic routines while suspended in the air. “After seeing performances in Miami in 2012, I became fascinated in aerial performances and researched workshops pertaining specifically to the art of aerial silk, where I found and attended a retreat in Costa Rica,” Amanda said, elaborating on her talent. “One of my favourite things to do in dancing is to jump; I love being airborne. Being suspended in silk in the air gives that sensation.” Amanda wishes to expand the arts community within the BVI; she is in the process of constructing a space to be used as a multi-purpose arena for all the artistic mediums to practice, perform, and showcase their talents. When asked to describe her passion for dancing, Amanda laughed and replied, “It’s just there. It’s a part of you; you hear music, must dance.” bvipropertyyacht.com

He shakes. He pours! But those aren’t the only steps involved in the intricate art of crafting the perfect cocktail. BVI’s acclaimed award-winning mixologist, Christian MacDonald—aka ‘Xtian’—has shared his passion for cocktail innovation with the community since 2011, and has made a profile for himself as one the Territory’s most charismatic bartenders. Xtian takes pleasure in his work as bartending is his career, enabling his creativity while sharing the love of his passion with travellers from around the world. A proud Canadian, Xtian grew up in Kitchener, Ontario, where his interests included hockey, basketball, and bass guitar in rock bands. “They say that people who don’t become rock stars become bartenders. So you can see how my path may have been predetermined; however, I still yearn to be a game show host one day,” admitted Xtian.

Many of his customers would agree that the modern day bartender who specialises in cocktails is a mixologist, yet Xtian modestly disagrees. “Haha. Mixologist…I hate that term. Yeah, let’s use that!” Last year, Xtian obtained a certification with BarSmarts, a programme sponsored by Pernod Ricard USA. “The programme was founded by some of the biggest names in the business. I plan on travelling to take my BarSmarts Advanced in the new year,” said the cocktail master.

Xtian continues to impress BVI locals and visitors with his expertise in the art of mixology, currently working at Scrub Island. Recently, Xtian hosted a private Cocktail Party for a friend’s birthday where he served cake infused with liquor, liqueur sauces, layered with sorbet, and served inside a glass of champagne. “What gives me the most satisfaction from being a bartender, really, is anytime a guest returns. The party was BVI community with their second elite soiree, hosted at the affluent super-yacht marina, Yacht Club Costa Smeralda on Virgin Gorda, selected for its prestigious location, swimming pool, and spectacular view of the North Sound. Guests had great anticipations for the day of this event as it is the best excuse to dress fancy, drink champagne, and dance into the night to the sound of international DJs. The dress code being ‘black and feathers’ invited guests to get creative with their costumes, even implementing swan wings and elaborate make-up to their outfits. “Black swan represents something beautiful and elegant, with a dark element of mystery and danger – that’s how I wished for guests to feel,” said Cid Nava, Founder and Creative Director of Navanchor.
