LAND Words by Lauren Charley. Photography courtesy of Elemental Water Makers and Jerome Glasgow

Here in the British Virgin Islands during 2015, if there is one common wish among residents, it is for more rain; not that it’s desired to see ‘British weather’ of course, but a little extra rain would be a blessing. Our vegetables aren’t growing and our cisterns are running dry, and the solutions to desalinate and provide the community with fresh water are anything but cheap. Luckily for us, there is a brand new cost-efficient and eco-friendly solution, which has made its market debut right here in the BVI on Great Camanoe. Elemental Water Makers (EWM) is the only company of its kind with “a new and patent-pending configuration which enables constant desalination using only fluctuating renewable energy which enables fresh water at lower costs than previously possible,” said Sid Vollebregt, managing director of EWM.

26

VI PROPERTY & YACHT

Published by aLookingGlass Ltd.

“Desalination is the process of removing dissolved salts from saline water for the production of fresh water. The preferred desalination technology is reverse osmosis,” - Sid Vollebregt. The company was founded in the spring of 2012 after two engineers, Sid Vollebregt and Reinoud Feenstra fresh from Delft University of Technology successfully completed a field pilot in Indonesia, resulting in the innovation of a reverse osmosis system that can run continuously without electricity, using only fluctuating renewable energy of the sun, wind and/or waves.

This is realised by incorporating an elevated water buffer to cope with the periods absent of renewable energy. The required elevation has been reduced by 80% through energy recovery. Hailing from the Netherlands where fresh water is abundant and accessible, EWM wished to find a solution for fresh water scarcity in areas where it was a problem. The places where desalination is necessary is usually around the equator and on islands which have access to a vast amount of water, but little of it is fresh. “As our solution is driven by renewable energy, the shortest payback time

and the biggest cost savings can be achieved at regions with high electricity prices,” said Sid. The BVI was chosen by EWM as the location for their market entry as the Virgin Islands specifically has some of the highest electricity prices globally. This year in 2015, the BVI also experienced a drastic decrease in total rainfall, and a drought warning was set in place by the Department of Disaster Management (DDM). For residents, this became highly problematic, especially those who had to pay significantly high prices to order fresh water when their cistern tanks ran dry. “We can realise a payback between five to eight years after the installation, depending on the size of the water demand and the exact location. When taking a financial lifetime of 15 years, this means a return on investment of over 100% and cost savings in the order of 30-70%,” said Sid. EWM offer solutions for projects of all types including resorts, businesses, communities, or entire municipalities. The project undertaken in Great Camanoe was a private residency belonging to Paul Serini, who now enjoys more than 3,300 gallons of fresh water daily thanks to his new system. This installation saves 63% in comparison with his former electricity-driven reverse osmosis system, while avoiding 25 tonnes of carbon-dioxide emissions per year. bvipropertyyacht.com

“My family and I selected Elemental Water Makers to provide fresh water for our home in the British Virgin Islands because they presented us with a cost effective solution to creating a continuous supply of very high quality water without monthly electrical bills and without using fossil fuels,” said Paul Serini, owner of the residence on Great Camanoe. Using unlimited resources of the sea, sun, earth, and wind while avoiding carbon dioxide emissions, the BVI and USVI have an innovative way to solve their challenges with fresh water scarcity and save money in doing so. The team at EWM are excited to break into the Caribbean market and wish to provide their solutions to areas throughout the world.

Satellite Television Call for satellite internet services via VSAT, Inmarsat, Iridium, Globalstar & 4G.

This is what Elemental Water Makers has to offer: • Savings of 70% on water expenses by avoiding the use of electricity • Reliability of production assured by using mature technology • Off-grid installation yearly preventing tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions • Stress-free operation and minimized maintenance through remote monitoring and automation • Runs silent by excluding high-pressure pumps and generators • Easily scalable from a few thousands up to hundreds of thousands gallons per day

You desire a holiday spent on the water, cruising the Caribbean Sea, yet covet the deluxe accommodations and fine dining experiences found in five star resorts. Combining passion for the nautical lifestyle with indulgence in delectable cuisine is the specialty of Peter Lech and Jade Konst, the captain and chef duo known as the charter crew of luxury catamaran, Xenia 50. Unique to this particular crew, Peter and Jade both hold a captain’s license and have extensive culinary experience with backgrounds in the sailing and restaurant industries. Their vision as a crew is to combine their passion for culinary and cruising the open water by emphasising the service industry aspect with their charter guests who visit the British Virgin Islands. Xenia 50 is a brand new 50 foot Privilege Marine catamaran, completed in February 2015 in Sables d’Olonne, France. She is one of three in the Xenia fleet which includes a Privilege 745 and Privilege 615, all outfitted to offer the same “fine quality”. The Xenia yachts feature warm, inviting interior colours for the most comforting space with the exterior exhibiting a distinct tan shade, unique to the fleet and conspicuously displaying that the vessels are of the Xenia brand. Jade and Peter can accommodate up to six guests in three cabins on board their floating home, which delivers a relaxed yet high-end atmosphere for travel. Each of the cabins is fitted with a European queen-size bed and en-suite bathroom for a comforting experience. Guests instantly feel welcomed upon arrival in their bedrooms which are adorned with flowers, dressed with soft Egyptian cotton linens, cashmere throws, and include a 32” flat screen TV. Retreating to the saloon space, Jade prepares a special menu in the galley suited to all preferences and dietary needs. Relax at the dining table and browse through a diverse selection of media on the Apple TV, or enjoy a cocktail prepared at the bar station on the expansive, covered foredeck and enjoy your meal alfresco. A holiday onboard Xenia 50 is not only a stay in deluxe accommodations, it is also the ultimate dining experience. Hosted by culinary experts, Jade and Peter are proud to provide an extensive selection of their culinary skill, from macaroni and hot dogs to gourmet pan—Asian dishes—Jade’s specialty. The couple who has worked together for three years prior to Xenia 50 are ready to entertain the requests of your ideal vacation, whether it be a pleasurable exploration of the islands, or a one-of-a-kind business trip combining work and play. bvipropertyyacht.com

In addition to professional chef proficiency, Jade and Peter also bring their own background to the charter experience as they share their knowledge of marine life. When out snorkelling or diving, Jade will work as your personal underwater photographer, and edit the photos for your printed copies at the conclusion of the trip. Peter is a microbiologist and will educate your group about the species you encounter on the digital creature guide on the plasma TV. Xenia 50 provides a one-of-a-kind yachting vacation hosted by a passionate multi-talented crew who eagerly await pleasing you. “The name Xenia comes from the ancient Greek term for hospitality and on each Xenia yacht, every detail has been considered to host vacationers in the upmost luxury and style. Xenia 50 has all the amenities of a larger yacht but with a more intimate setting where we, the crew, can focus on personalising your experience in the Caribbean, said Peter whose words aptly summarise what Xenia 50 promotes.

Gratitude in the Graced-land

To the visitor, it would seem as if no change in seasons exist in the British Virgin Islands; that the weather is always exactly the same – and yet in truth, there is such a difference in the last few months of every year. November brings cooler breezes; some quenching rain showers; and the return of all the beautiful, busy crewed charter yachts. As some residents of the northern hemisphere embrace—gasp—the prospect of snow and ice, charter yacht crews prepare in anticipation for all the wonderful guests with whom they will have the privilege of sharing these beautiful islands many call home. November also brings a beloved American holiday that has been adopted all over the world, including the British Virgin Islands – Thanksgiving. Many friends and families from near and far choose to spend this day on-board one of the BVI’s many crewed charter yachts. As often happens—especially when the crewed yacht chefs are involved—this special day has taken on the vibrant and exotic influence of the islands, present in the delectable aromas that fill the picturesque BVI anchorages on that fourth Thursday of November. No matter what is served, the day’s purpose is to gather family and friends in appreciation for all life’s blessings – and being surrounded by the blessed BVI’s tropical allure makes it just that much easier. If you’re looking for gourmet inspiration on this unique day (or any other, for that matter), here is an original Lolalita dessert that is guaranteed to please.

Pecan P ie Cheesecake with Salted Caramel Crust: 1 3/4 cups graham cracker crumbs 1/4 cup light brown sugar, packed 1/3 cup butter, melted Pecan Pie Layer: 1 cup granulated sugar 1/3 cup dark agave syrup 1/3 cup molasses 1/3 cup butter at room temperature 2 large eggs, lightly beaten 1 1/2 cups pecans, chopped medium 1 TSP vanilla extract

Cheesecake Layer:

3 8oz packages of cream cheese at room temperature 1 1/4 cup light brown sugar, packed 2 TBSP all-purpose flour 4 large eggs 2/3 cup heavy whipping cream 1 TSP vanilla extract Garnish: 1 cup sugar 6 TBSP salted butter, cut into small pieces 1/2 cup heavy cream 1 TSP salt 3/4 cup pecan halves

Preheat oven to 350ºF. Combine the graham cracker crumbs, sugar, and butter in a small mixing bowl. Line the bottom of a 9in springform pan with parchment paper, and press mixture into bottom, making sure it is level. Bake for 5 minutes and let cool. In a medium saucepan, bring sugar, agave syrup, molasses, butter, eggs, pecans and vanilla to a boil over medium-to-high heat, stirring constantly with a rubber or silicone spatula. Reduce heat and simmer, stirring constantly until thickened, about 10 minutes. Pour mixture over graham cracker crust and set aside. Beat the cream cheese until there are no lumps. Add the brown sugar and flour, beating until fluffy. Add eggs, one at a time, then cream and vanilla. Pour cheesecake mixture over pecan filling. Place springform pan on a cookie sheet on the bottom rack of the oven and bake for 45 minutes. Reduce the temperature to 325ºF and bake for 30 minutes. Turn off oven and let the cheesecake rest in the oven for 1 hour. Run a knife around the edges to release the sides from the springform pan, but do not remove the cheesecake from the pan. Let it cool to room temperature, cover the top loosely with aluminium foil, and place in the refrigerator overnight. In a small saucepan, heat granulated sugar over medium heat, stirring constantly with a rubber or silicone spatula. Sugar will form into lumps and

eventually melt to a caramel-coloured liquid. Add butter one piece at a time, stirring constantly. Slowly drizzle in heavy cream, stirring constantly. Boil for 1 minute. Remove from heat and stir in salt. Allow to cool before using. When you’re ready to serve, slice cheesecake into 8 – 12 even pieces and drizzle plates with cooled caramel. Place cheesecake on plates and decorate with whole pecans. You’re welcome to add extra caramel – the more the merrier.

SEA In the old days, they relied on the location of the stars, their knowledge of wind and current, and if lucky, a box compass. There were other methods as well and I will share the limited knowledge that I possess with you now. Box compasses were a fairly reliable instrument in sailing, especially at night but they were a luxury few could afford. In the 1920’s in the village of East End for example, there were maybe four compasses and close to four times as many sloops in operation. The owner of a compass would lend it out to others, but only when he was not using it so they were not readily available; sometimes a trip down island had to be postponed until one could be had. The trip between here and St. Maarten is the longest distance between any of the Islands in the Antilles chain – 90 miles. It also is the only time you travel directly into the wind and almost straight against the current. All the other passages have the wind and current on some degree of a beam reach. Additionally, land is out of sight most of the time and even when St. Maarten comes into vision, its distance is very misleading. The trip is usually begun at the end of the day with an overnight passage in hopes of reaching land in the early morning or by noon of the next day. When you are on a starboard tack, the addition of the current pushing against you on an angle sends you away from where you’re going so that the longer you stay on that tack the farther away you are pushed. One must compensate by staying longer on a port tack, steering up towards the island of Saba and then falling off to St Maarten. They were aware of this in the old days and were able to reach Words and photography by Geoffrey Brooks, Curator – Virgin Islands Maritime Museum

In studying the maritime history of the Virgin Islands, one subject that has always fascinated me is how the mariners of the old days were able to navigate their sloops over vast distances of the Caribbean. For over 200 years, our sailors travelled all over the region and even down to Guyana on a regular basis without the aid of the electronic devices that we take for granted today. I have delivered both power and sail boats between the Virgin Islands, St. Maarten and Antigua and have used both chart calculations and an electronic chart plotter which is in common use today. No matter which method was used, we always had the benefit of GPS—Global Positioning Satellite—to insure that we knew our location.

the island by timing their tacks and using certain stars to steer by. Virgin Islands mariners knew the location of certain star formations at different times of the year and they used this knowledge to point their sloops in the right direction. If they were travelling beyond St Maarten and continuing down island they would switch to a different star or constellation as they changed direction. They also had their own names for these stars which unfortunately I am not aware. Once you are heading down, you are almost constantly in sight of land and at night you can use the lights from St. Kitts and Nevis to guide you to Antigua and so on from island to island as you move south. This however is another of our modern day advantages since electric current did not reach the Caribbean until recent times. Unless there was moonlight to silhouette the islands in the distance, our ancient mariners had to rely on their knowledge of wind and current and time their tacks accordingly.

They did have another method to keep them on course – one which worked when they were on a reach and another when running before

The British Virgin Islands is a renowned paradise for the aesthetically pleasing beaches, prime sailing conditions, mountainous terrain, tropical vegetation, and friendly Caribbean culture. Year after year, we attract a recurring clientele of visitors and homeowners who relish their time spent in villas, sailing the islands on yachts, or enjoying the deluxe accommodations we have to offer. Although we have attracted a healthy number of day tourists from cruise ships since 1994, this year with the opening of the new cruise ship pier, we can expect to welcome almost double the amount of day guests to experience our beautiful home.
