01 - process

We began the project by finding precedents from landscape photography to find themes and symbolic properties that we believed represented our understanding of justice. We used these themes and symbols to generate objects that we thought came closer to distilling a symbolic and iconographic representation of justice for our courthouse. Our objects focused on near-symmetrical massing in plan and elevation, geometric iconography, and eroded solid form. The building generated from these objects was a 3 story mass organized along 4 colliding grids, creating a mass that ws conceptually in line with the rock formations around Burnet that were our third landscape precedent.

After the first exercise, we used our digital model for the generated object to create a series of 2d geometries to inform the design process. These 2d shapes helped create the systems by which we organized the floor plans. We created 3d interpretations of some of the 2d shapes to use as components in the second 3d model, which was used then for the rest of the project as the means by which we organized program elements.

It was important to us to use a simple material palette, and think of the courthouse primarily in terms of form and to avoid “doing too much” with different materials or fenestration patterns. The building is clad mostly in sandstone blocks, with some smaller masses clad in a standing seam copper facade.

We used a steel structural system with an average structural bay of 18’.

For the courtroom interiors, we decided to take a fairly conservative approach with materials, and to use the organization in plan and the skylighted ceiling as expressive elements. The ceiling system is repeated in all 3 courtrooms and above the central atrium.
