frontier justice county courthouse - Burnet, Texas fourth year - spring 2017

Burnet, Texas is a small town and seat of the county of the same name. Just shy of 6,000 people and an hourʼs drive into the semi-arid hill country west of Austin, the town is organized on a classic American grid system, with commercial buildings and the quaint city hall facing a central square with the Burnet County Courthouse, a squat, red granite edifice from the 1930s. This project is concerned with iconography and the mission of a courthouse as a physical presence in urban space. When does a building “look like” a courthouse, and what implications does this have for our conception of justice and how it relates to space? Partner: Tanner Hyland

If the project brief asks us to consider the gestalt image of a courthouse in pursuing a design, Burnet itself offers us the gestalt image of a sleepy Texas town, straightlaced storefronts in local stone, wide streets with lumbering pickup trucks, activity in the town center focused on a barbecue restaurant directly opposite the front steps of the courthouse, and unpretentious protestant church steeples among the olive green oak trees.

The plan footprint of the courthouse diminishes on each level, with a courtroom anchoring each floor. The primary programming challenge was preserving three connected but independent circulation systems: public, staff, and secure. Our formal decisions were always tempered by the imperative to make sure that circulation was acceptable for a county courthouse by Texas ordinances.

permanent pretend mixed-use development- Lawrence, Kansas second year - spring 2015

The southern half of the block at Massachusetts Street and 11th Street in Lawrence, Kansas is the largest vacant property on “Mass,” as it is known locally. This project imagines a mixed-use project to occupy this block. The architectural challenge, to respond to the monumental and symbolically significant courthouse and bank buildings on the corner, is exacerbated by the nature of mixed use buildings. The architect is the arbiter of the buildingʼs appearance until opening day, after which it becomes subject to the concerns of its tenants, owners, and the spraypaint of local teenagers. How does one faithfully execute the symbols of quaint midwestern main streets while also creating a building that can willingly become just about anything else?

We as architects often yearn for a certain permanence in our work, but our urges toward monumental or spectacular form are often at odds with practical concerns, and we pretend that the users of built creations will use them as intended and as built forever, something quite rare. After all, building forms which prove inconvenient to their owners are likely to be entombed in more conventional “stuffâ€? or removed entirely. WhatĘźs the architect to do?

confronting ignorance cultural museum - Dallas, Texas third year - fall 2015

Michael Phillips writes in his 2001 book “White Metropolis” that Dallas has a “conflict-marred past filled with class and racial strife” and that the physical and cultural landscape of the city today represented a willful amnesia of these tensions. This project proposes a Museum devoted to the exploration of social injustice in Dallas from its founding in 1841 until the present day. The form of the museum is informed by its mission to recount the scarred history of the city and to present the path to reconciliation and knowledge.

Central Dallas in 1953 appears much like most American cities at the time; a fine-grained network of small streets and small-footprint buildings accessed primarily on foot or by dense networks of public transportation. Some clearing of urban fabric has begun to make way for freeways and parking infrastructure, but the city as a human-scaled environment remains largely intact.

2013

The built form of Dallas in the decades since the first interventions of the Interstate Highway system has seen tremendous change. Dallas in figure ground is almost entirely unrecognizable against its form 60 years before. scale has been fractured, automobile uses have destroyed the tightly-knit network of streets and buildings, and massive commercial and civic structures have replaced the varied scale of the original city.

The prescriptive program lies on a path that first descends to a subterranean structure, removing visitors from the tranquility of the Arts district and presenting a world invisible from the street, removed from popular understandings of the city. The remainder of the museum ramps gradually upward, eventually revealing a place of reflection nearly 40 feet higher than the lowest point of the museum. The arrangement of the galleries cannot be arbitrary; in order to convincingly make the case that the spatial development of the city plays an important role in social injustice, the museum must make a spatial statement. The galleries meet at nodes that direct towards important locations in the cultural history of the city.

highway house master-planned development - Kansas City, Kansas fourth year - fall 2016

Kansas City is defined by the limestone bluffs that overlook the Kansas and Missouri Rivers. Historically, however, these bluffs have been leveled, erased, cut, or left vacant. This project proposes a development of mixed-use buildings that stitch together the hightraffic, high-intensity Rainbow Boulevard corridor with the historically disadvantaged, low density residential areas separated from the corridor by bluffs. The project formalizes pedestrian paths of access to traverse the slopes, which are currently overgrown except for a lone sidewalk that climbs nearly 80 feet to connect Rainbow Boulevard with parking for the medical center. The buildings themselves are imagined as articulated stacks of unique and varied units, to act more as neighborhoods of individual experiences than anonymous blocks of identical flats. Each building consists of retail space at the ground level to activate the terraced plazas, parking accessible from the hilltop above the retail, and several levels of residences above the parking.

Rosedale lies about two miles southwest of downtown kansas city, straddling the line between the urban core and the inner-ring suburbs. Rosedale is connected to the cityĘźs freeway network by I-35 along its northern edge.

In its more immediate context, Rosedale is notable by its contrast with the wealthy suburb of Mission Hills, Kansas, only a mile to the south, and more middle-income areas to the east and northeast. Rosedale has historically received much less investment than either downtown or the high-income suburbs of Johnson County.

The University of Kansas Medical School and hospital is the economic anchor of the neighborhood, and also contributes a great deal to traffic difficulties and the strain of parking infrastructure in the neighborhood. There is a sharp divide between the significant traffic and high intensity land use east of Rainbow Boulevard and the mostly single-family homes to the west.

Rosedale west of Rainbow Boulevard has a great deal of vacant and underutilized land, concentrated primarilty on the edges of the bluffs, most of which are preserved as parkland. The largest exception is the bluffs immediately facing Rainbow Boulevard.

RosedaleĘźs is a curious urbanity - the traffic of the main corridors produces tremendous noise and activity, yet the residential sectors that constitute most of the neighborhood are so quiet and comfortably spread as to feel almost pastoral. In a midwestern context where a rural lifestyle and aesthetic is held as a practical and moral ideal against a certain suspicion towards its cities, is there a mutually agreeable path to doubling the population of Rosedale?

The plans reveal the approach to the steeply sloped site, using the building as an index to topography to telegraph the significant grade changes and simultaneously provide and approachable scale to activate the slopes as a series of pedestrian terraces and suspended residential building forms.

The units inhabit a site-cast concrete frame, and are constructed withtin this frame with light-gauge steel studs. The apartments are conceived and constructed much more like private, identifiable homes than a typical block of flats. The facade is clad in ceramic tiles, both to articulate the complex massing and to stand as a playful homage to the clinical nature of the institution that anchors the Rosedale community.

The Audio Reader Network is a non-profit based in Lawrence, Kansas which broadcasts audio of local news to the blind and visually impaired across Kansas and Missouri. The Sensory Garden at their office required a replacement for its decaying gazebo. The Dirt Works Studio was tasked with designing a pavilion to provide handicap accessible outdoor gathering space. In 16 weeks we designed and built a pavilion using rammed earth and mass timber framing with a charred, Shou Sugi Ban finish. As project manager, it was my responsibility to write and manage the construction schedule. I wrote daily emails to the studio to track progress and kept in regular contact with Professor Kraus to keep the studio on track for completion.

As metal fabrication lead, I was tasked with working with the project architects to create workable designs for connections that I could fabricate. With no prior experience and a tight fabrication schedule, it was a serious challenge to create working steel connections and maintain the schedule.

Lina Ghotmeh - Architecture Internship - Paris, France

fifth year - summer and fall 2017 I joined the team at LG-A in Paris for six months as an intern. I was able to work on a wide variety of projects at different scales and in different capacities, conducting pre-design research, working on conceptual design with illustrations and physical illustrations, and working on submission packages for competitions and commissions.

The first project I worked on at LG-A was a luxury chocolate boutique on Rue Faubourg St-Honore, in Paris. I built a series of physical models while setting the final shape of the aluminum and glass forms on the walls and ceiling, and working on a series of studies for the display and storage structures.

For our entry to the REINVENT THE METROPOLE competition, we worked with other firms to create an office district with urban agriculture spaces and a 5 kilometer passerelle. My task was to create the digital model that was used to generate the rendering above, and I created several illustrated vignettes, including the one to the left.
