Anthony Burrill’s persuasive, up-beat illustration and design has been commissioned by cultural, social and commercial clients around the world from New York, to London to Tokyo. Combining an instinctive handling of colour and composition with a witty approach to words. He has worked on advertising campaigns and posters for clients such as The Economist, the British Library and London Underground. He regularly collaborates with musicians and animators to make films, music promos and animations, using his distinctive visual vocabulary and passion for fusing sound and image. His installations and 3-D work have been commissioned by Colette in Paris and The Design Museum in London among others.

Anthony Burrill tells of the joys of simplicity, hard work and being nice to people After studying graphic design at Leeds Polytechnic, Anthony Burrill received an MA in Graphic Design from the Royal College of Art in London. He created classic work for clients including London Underground, The Economist and Hans Brinker Hotel, before relocating to the village of Wittersham in Kent, where he discovered that a local printer, Adams of Rye, had preserved its old letterpress machines. Together, they have produced a large body of simple message posters that have caught the world’s imagination.
Far far away, behind the word mountains, far from the countries Vokalia and Consonantia, there live the blind texts. Separated they live in Bookmarksgrove right at the coast of the Semantics, a large language ocean. A small river named Duden flows by their place and supplies it with the necessary regelialia. It is a paradisematic country, in which roasted parts of sentences fly into your mouth. Even the all-powerful Pointing has no control about the blind texts it is an almost unorthographic life. One day however a small line of blind text by the name of Lorem Ipsum decided to leave for the far World of Grammar. The Big Oxmox advised her not to do so, because there were thousands of bad Commas, wild Question Marks and devious Semikoli, but the Little Blind Text didn’t listen. She packed her seven versalia, put her initial into the belt and made herself on the way. When she reached the first hills of the Italic Mountains, she had a last view back on the skyline of her hometown Bookmarksgrove, the headline of Alphabet Village and the subline of her own road, the Line Lane. Pityful a rethoric question ran over her cheek, then she continued her way. On her way she met a copy. The copy warned the Little Blind Text, that where it came from it would have been rewritten a thousand times and everything that was left from its origin would be the word “and” and the Little Blind Text should turn around and return to its own, safe country. But nothing the copy said could convince her and so it didn’t take long until a few insidious Copy Writers ambushed her, made her drunk with Longe and Parole and dragged her into their agency, where they abused her for their projects again and again. Anthony Burrill became renowned for a series of typographic covers for Wallpaper* Work hard and be nice to people
This is another phrase of the Wallpaper* series, that I overheard whilst queuing in a supermarket. An elderly lady, talking to the check-out girl, was explaining the secret to a happy life. The phrase struck a chord with me and hung around in my head for a couple of years until I made the poster. It has become very popular and is my most recognised work so far. I’m very proud of it. Kemistry Gallery launch Anthony Burrill’s new show tonight, In A New Place. Anthony’s latest work has taken a new direction to include large installation pieces as well as more recently exploring coloured perspex for an exhibition at Colette. The show opening tonight in the east London gallery is all new work following on from his show in Paris, and it is a refreshingly bold statement from a designer who has made the style his own. We visited Anthony at the gallery while he was installing the pieces to find out a bit more about the work and process involved.
