Concert Étude No.2 "white_noise"
Stephen Ryan Jackson
Performance Notes: Inhale: make an audible and almost strained sounding breath.
Preparation: the trumpet should be prepared by removing all three valve slides, and slightly unscrewing the valve cap of the first valve slide.
Glottal Stops: stop and break the airstream with the back of the throat. Lines are approximations. Amplification & Reverb: Due to the quiet nature of the piece amplification should be used. Sound should be ran through a reverb patch or pedal such as a Strymon "Big Sky" reverb or similar.
Key Click: using first valve, press halway, and flick up
Tongue Pizzicato: forcefully stop the air stream with the tongue.
Valve notation: throughout a 4 line "tablature" notation is used, each line represents the valve that is to be used.
Fluttertongue: Air Sound: blow air through the instrument with no "buzz" of the embouchure.
Sh, S(i), S(u): pronounce syllables through the instrument.
Valve Gliss: slowly shift "half valve" from one valve to another.
Hisssing Static: quickly alternate between syllables.
Duration ca; 6 - 7 minutes
Program Notes: Concert Étude No.2 "white_noise" is the second piece in what will be a set of 12 études, that aims to expand the trumpet players knowledge of contemporary extended techniques (which are often neglected in private study) while also being a genuine musical statement. These etudes can be used solely in private study or can be performed in a recital setting.
This particular étude aims at exploring air sounds and how the trumpet player can create different timbres with air alone. The piece is inspired by the aesthetics of noise music and takes the sound of white noise as its primary sound source.
