white_noise prepared trumpet and electronics
Stephen Ryan Jackson
- white_noise Program Notes:
Techniques & Notations: Preparation:
the trumpet should be prepared by removing all three valve slides, and slightly unscrewing the valve cap of the first valve slide only.
"like silence but not empty"
- Valve notation:
Performance / Staging Notes: - Air Sound: Max/MSP Patch:
Max/MSP patch available upon request from the composer.
Optional Additional Static:
If the performer so chooses, the piece can be performed in the dark with several televisions tuned to a static station. If individual televisions are not available a projector screen will suffice. The volume of the television static should be audible but should not overcome the trumpet or electronics.
blow air through the instrument with no "buzz" of the embouchure.
- Valve Gliss:
- Inhale:
slowly shift "half valve" from one valve to another.
make an audible and almost strained sounding breath.
- Glottal Stops:
Choice of Instrument:
throughout a 4 line "tablature" notation is used, each line represents the valve that is to be pressed.
stop and break the airstream with the back of the throat (NOT the tongue). Lines indicate airstream and are approximate.
The piece was originally conceived for Bb Trumpet but any three valved trumpet will work. - Key Click:
using first valve, press halway, and flick up
- Tongue Pizzicato/Ram:
forcefully stop the air stream with the tongue.
Duration ca; 7 - 8 minutes - Fluttertongue:
flutters should be done in an overexaggerated manner to cut through texture and air sounds.
Copyright © 2018 Stephen R. Jackson - Sh, S(i), S(u):
pronounce syllables through the instrument.
www.stephenryanjackson.com stephenjacksoncomposer@gmail.com - Hisssing Static:
(817) 233 9907
quickly alternate between syllables. Creating a high pitched "hissing static" texture
Performance Score "like silence but not empty"
