Anniversary

OKOB OJ I S U M ME R THE ATR E .O R G owned & operated by Stephens College

Welcome! Anniversaries are a good time for reflection. As the Okoboji Summer Theatre opens its “gem of a season” for the 60th year with Stephens College, there are so many wonderful memories, productions and projects to be proud of and a promising future ahead. This past year has been a good reminder to me that art is needed now more than ever as a powerful force to unify us. This summer, we will offer plenty for you to enjoy, consider and sing along to. And if you loved a production, share the art and invite others to see it … keep the performing arts strong in Okoboji. Thank you to all our patrons and sponsors. We deeply appreciate all you do for us! See you under the awning!

Ruth Ann Burke EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

Welcome to the

2017 Season! A wonderful colleague recently said something of importance to me, “Art is obligation. I relish that phrase. Those of us who create art know how significant that obligation is, and we hope to continue to honor that outlook for each of you as we joyfully celebrate Season 60. The legacy of the Okoboji Summer Theatre is inspirational, and we hope that as we enter a new decade of creating art, you find our offerings uplifting, provocative, exciting, and, of course, entertaining. Stephens College is proud to acknowledge and thank our wonderful audiences who have helped us to move forward these 60 years and make special connections between our stars who are both onstage and backstage and the patrons who afford us the opportunity to realize our art. We look ahead with excitement for the years to come!

Gail Humphries Mardirosian ARTISTIC DIRECTOR

The Sound of Music, 2016

The World Goes ’Round

• Musical Music by John Kander and Lyrics by Fred Ebb Conceived by Scott Ellis, Susan Stroman and David Thompson JUNE 13-18 The Tony Award-winning duo Kander and Ebb created memorable material for this musical revue featuring a wonderful collection of love songs, torch songs and comic numbers from Chicago, Cabaret, Funny Lady and New York, New York with vibrant arrangements. We are kicking off the season with a blast … don’t miss this one!

Plaza Suite

Comedy

By Neil Simon JUNE 20-25

Nominated for a Tony Award, this comedy classic is written by one of America’s most famous—and favorite—playwrights. It features three hilarious vignettes, all set in the same suite at New York’s famed Plaza Hotel. A sure-fire hit that OST audiences will definitely enjoy.

The Nerd

Comedy

By Larry Shue JUNE 27-JULY 2 American playwright Larry Shue, who created the hilarious favorite The Foreigner, crafted this side-splitting, character-based comedy. Young architect Willum Cubbert is delighted when an unexpected guest joins his birthday party, but the guest’s nightmarish behavior throws the occasion into mayhem. Very funny and anything but average!

Footloose

• Musical Stage Adaptation by Dean Pitchford and Walter Bobbie Music by Tom Snow and Lyrics by Dean Pitchford JULY 4-9 OST invites you to “cut loose” for the holiday week as we premiere this Tony Award-nominated high-energy, fast-paced musical. It features a wonderful score, with memorable and rockin’ 1980s classics, including “Footloose,” “Holding Out for a Hero,” “Let’s Hear it for the Boy” and “Almost Paradise.”

Boeing-Boeing

• Farce By Marc Camoletti Translated by Beverley Cross and Francis Evans JULY 11-16 This Tony Award-winning script for best revival of a play in 2008 is one of those frantic adult farces that OST is famous for. Set in a 1960s Paris flat, Bernard is engaged to three stewardesses who know nothing about each other. His perfect life goes awry when his pal comes to town and the new Boeing jet schedule throws all of his careful plans out the window, with all three fiancées in town simultaneously and catastrophe looming ahead.

On Golden Pond

American Classic

By Ernest Thompson JULY 18-23

Aging couple Ethel and Norman Thayer spend the summer at their lake home called Golden Pond to celebrate Norman’s 80th birthday. This wonderful American classic is a sentimental blend of humor and family conflict, which is sure to entertain. Also, join us as playwright Ernest Thompson (who won an Academy Award for Best Adaptation of his script) visits OST as part of a project with Humanities Iowa.

Move Over, Mrs. Markham

Farce

By Ray Cooney and John Chapman JULY 25-30

OST loves farce and nobody does it better than the playwriting team of Cooney and Chapman. Like the best British farces, set in an elegant top-floor London flat, this one has it all—multiple zany couples and characters, plenty of chaos and naughty nonsense, and, of course, multiple doors to be slammed.

Sylvia

• Comedy By A.R. Gurney AUG. 1-6 This Off-Broadway hit featured Sarah Jessica Parker in the original cast as Sylvia. This modern romantic comedy is a true battle of the sexes as a man is forced to choose between man’s best friend (his dog) and his wife. It was called “one of the most involving, beautiful, funny, touching and profound plays I’ve ever seen.” (New York Daily News)

South Pacific

• Musical Music by Richard Rodgers and Lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II Book by Oscar Hammerstein II and Joshua Logan Adapted from James A. Michener’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel “Tales of South Pacific” AUG. 8-13 The musical classic South Pacific, a Pulitzer and Tony Award winner, is set in an island paradise during World War II and features an extraordinary score with classics like “Some Enchanted Evening,” “I’m Gonna Wash That Man Right Out of My Hair,” “I’m in Love with a Wonderful Guy” and many unforgettable musical theatre standards. Considered among the greatest Broadway musicals, the entire family will adore this rousing musical, which is a perfect—and timely—closer for our 60th season.
