Okoboji

Welcome to our 61st season! As I begin my tenure as artistic director, it is a great honor to be following in the footsteps of the talented and inspiring past leaders of the Okoboji Summer Theatre. Carrying on the rich tradition of training the next generation of theatrical artists in a professional theatre setting is one that is unique and special to Okoboji and Stephens College, and it is a duty that I take on with great excitement and pride. The OST experience is one that the entire company, students and guest artists alike, cherish for years to come. And the best part? You, the audience, get the chance to see tomorrow’s theatrical makers, today! I am looking forward to getting to know you and the Okoboji community this summer and in the years to come. We will continue to provide quality, professional theatre and work together to enrich the arts for residents and visitors of all ages. Whether this is your first summer with us, or your 61st, I know that you will be blown away by the talent and artistry that is in store for you this summer at OST. See you under the awning!

Stephen Brotebeck ARTISTIC DIRECTOR

Summer Theatre We are delighted that you are here at the Okoboji Summer Theatre supporting live professional theatre! This is my 20th summer and we’ve got some exciting things in store that promise to make our 61st season one of our best yet. We’re proud to announce that Stephen Brotebeck is joining us as the new artistic director. He’s a talented director, choreographer, teacher and a wonderful person, too. Please join us under the awning before the productions to say hello. For the first time, we are producing four musicals along with an eclectic mix of new works. And once again, we have many guest artists and gifted students this season, so grab a friend and see all nine productions. You won’t be disappointed and your attendance means we won’t remain a “best-kept secret.” On behalf of the OST company, I want to say thank you to our supporters. Many of you have helped us accomplish some major goals, strengthening us for the years ahead. You promote us year-round, you bring family and friends to our productions, and you invest in us by attending and donating. The generosity in this community is incredible and the ongoing support allows us to keep creating art and sharing it with you. Many thanks!

Ruth Ann Burke EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

Godspell

• Musical Conceived by John-Michael Tebelak Music and New Lyrics by Stephen Schwartz Book by John-Michael Tebelak

JUNE 12-17 Fill those early summer Okoboji nights with one of the biggest Broadway and Off-Broadway hits of all time. Godspell is a patron favorite and joyously shares the message of kindness, tolerance and love, featuring songs such as “Day By Day,” “All For the Best” and “Learn Your Lessons Well.” Bring the whole family!

Leaving Iowa

• Comedy By Tim Clue and Spike Manton

JUNE 19-24 A charming comedy about family vacations, where Don Browning returns home and relives childhood memories when his family would pile into the car and visit places like Mount Union, Iowa. Leaving Iowa is a postcard to all those long, but wonderful, nutty trips in the family car, with Mom humming, Dad missing the turnoff and the kids fighting. An Okoboji crowd favorite!

I Ought to Be in Pictures

Comedy

By Neil Simon

JUNE 26-JULY 1 A comedic gem written by Neil Simon, one of America’s most popular playwrights. Herb, a Hollywood playwright, is surprised when his past reappears in the form of Libby, a teenage daughter who has trekked from Brooklyn with dreams of movie stardom. There are plenty of laughs as we watch him take another stab at fatherhood and hopefully, this time, get it right.

Annie • Musical Music by Charles Strouse, Lyrics by Martin Charnin and Book by Thomas Meehan JULY 3-8 Bring on the girl power! Okoboji audiences are sure to love everything about this Tony Award-winning phenomenon! Annie is the little orphan who charms everyone’s heart with equal measures of pluck and positivity, despite a next-to-nothing start in 1930s New York City. The wonderful score features the quintessential favorite “Tomorrow,” along with “It’s a Hard-Knock Life” and “Easy Street.”

The Miracle Worker

Classic

By William Gibson

JULY 10-15 A theatre classic sharing the story of Annie Sullivan and her blind and deaf student, Helen Keller, who is trapped in a secret, silent world and unable to communicate. Only Annie realizes that there is a mind and spirit waiting to be rescued from the dark, tortured silence. This Tony Award winner is a poignant tale that the New York Post describes as “absorbing and moving.”

Not Now, Darling

• Farce By Ray Cooney and John Chapman JULY 17-22 Another farce from this powerful writing duo, Not Now Darling takes place at the exclusive London fur salon of Bodley and Crouch, where the scene quickly dissolves into havoc with a tangled web of misunderstandings and mistaken identities. As many OST patrons, (and the London Sunday Express) expressed, this farce delivers “an evening of non-stop laughter.”

A Grand Night for Singing • Musical Music by Richard Rodgers, Lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II JULY 24-29 A beautiful salute to this dynamic songwriting team! Come relive the timeless music and memories of some of your favorite shows: Me and Juliet, State Fair, Flower Drum Song and the Broadway classics Carousel, Oklahoma!, The King and I, South Pacific, Cinderella and The Sound of Music. You’re sure to leave the theatre singing as you get reacquainted with some of the most beloved musical theatre songs ever written.

Over the River and Through the Woods

Comedy

By Joe DiPietro

JULY 31-AUG. 5 This hilarious family comedy centers around Nick, a single, ItalianAmerican New Jersey boy who spends every Sunday dinner with his grandparents. This weekly routine sparks quite the shenanigans when they plot and scheme to keep Nick from moving away. As one reviewer put it, this comedy is “loaded with laughs every step of the way.”

Thoroughly Modern Millie • Musical Music by Jeanine Tesori, Lyrics by Dick Scanlan and Book by Richard Morris and Dick Scanlan AUG. 7-12 Closing out our 61st season is the six-time Tony Award-winner and musical hit Thoroughly Modern Millie. Come along as Millie tap-dances her way to the Big Apple and finds herself in a series of madcap adventures as she sets her sights on marrying her wealthy boss.
