OKOBOJI SUMMER THEATRE 2019

OKOBOJISUMMERTHEATRE.ORG owned and operated by Stephens College

Godspell, 2018

Welcome to Season 62! Only moments after the final curtain came down last summer, we began planning this electrifying season, which includes six plays and musicals that have never been presented at the Okoboji Summer Theatre before. Over the course of nine weeks, you will see blockbuster musicals, hilarious comedies, an American classic, and a new adaptation of one of the most popular mysteries of all time. And if that isn’t enough, we have four creative productions for the whole family in the always-popular Boji Bantam, guaranteed to leave you entertained. What better way to spend the summer? The students of Stephens College are at the heart of every production. One of the exciting perks of attending a show at OST is the opportunity to see the future stars of the stage working side by side with professional actors, directors and designers from across the country. We take pride in being one of the few summer stock companies in the country that blends a rigorous training program with a high-quality professional theatrical experience. Thank you for supporting not only OST but also a future generation of theatre artists. See you under the awning!

Stephen Brotebeck ARTISTIC DIRECTOR

Okoboji Summer Theatre’s

62nd Season

We’re delighted you are in our beautiful space supporting live professional theater! Our 62nd season includes another stellar team, including our returning Artistic Director Stephen Brotebeck, who has assembled an inspiring group of guest directors, actors and designers, along with the talented Stephens College students who continue to amaze us all. Take a peek around the corner after the production at the Weaver Commons, truly a dream come true. It includes a new building with a kitchen and dining facility and a beautiful rehearsal space along with a volleyball court and green space for our company to enjoy. We are all so grateful to Anne Thorne Weaver for making this possible. Our deepest appreciation to our donors and sponsors, who support us financially and allow us to bring in artists from around the country. We could not do this without your support, so again, thank you. Please consider bringing a friend to all nine of our productions — there is truly something for everyone this season. We thank all of you who bring new patrons to experience OST ... this assures our audiences grow and that we can continue bringing powerful theater productions each summer. Thank you and enjoy the show!

Ruth Ann Burke EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

The Honky Tonk Angels

• Written and Directed by Ted Swindley

Musical

JUNE 11-16 From the creator of Always ... Patsy Cline comes this charming, foot-stompin’ musical combining more than 30 classic country tunes with a hilarious story about three gutsy gals who are determined to better their lives and follow their dreams to Nashville. The memorable song list includes “Stand by Your Man,” “9 to 5,” “Coal Miner’s Daughter,” “Ode to Billy Jo,” “These Boots Are Made for Walking” and “I Will Always Love You.”

Agatha Christie’s

Murder on the Orient Express

• Mystery

Adapted by Ken Ludwig JUNE 18-23

Just after midnight, a snowdrift stops the Orient Express in its tracks. The luxurious train is surprisingly full, but by the morning, it is one passenger fewer. An American tycoon lies dead in his compartment, stabbed a dozen times, his door locked from the inside. Isolated by the snow, the passengers desperately turn to Detective Hercule Poirot to identify the murderer before he or she strikes again.

Steel Magnolias

Comedy

By Robert Harling JUNE 25-30

Set in Truvy’s beauty salon, this poignant comedy is full of humor and a good strong dose of Southern charm. Watch five feisty and gossipy women from Louisiana as their lives unfold and intertwine in this funny and heartwarming tale. There is plenty of hilarious repartee and a few acerbic but humorously revealing verbal collisions that unveil the harsh — and beautiful — truths in life.

Disney and Cameron Mackintosh’s

Mary Poppins

• Musical Original Music and Lyrics by Richard M. Sherman and Robert B. Sherman, Book by Julian Fellowes New Songs, Additional Music and Lyrics by George Stiles and Anthony Drewe JULY 2-7

One of the most popular Disney movies of all time is capturing hearts in a whole new way: as a practically perfect musical! Based on the books by P.L. Travers and the classic Walt Disney film, Disney and Cameron Mackintosh’s Mary Poppins delighted Broadway audiences and received multiple Tony Awards nominations, including Best Musical. Even grown-ups can learn a lesson or two from the nanny who believes “anything can happen if you let it.”

Cat on a Hot Tin Roof

Classic

By Tennessee Williams

JULY 9-14 The work of an American literary dramatist and a poet at his best, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof is a play of “tremendous dramatic impact … and enormous theatrical power” (The New York Post). The story of a Southern family in crisis, this Pulitzer Prize-winning classic focuses on the emotions and tensions that boil over as husband Brick and his wife, “Maggie the Cat,” interact with Big Daddy and Big Mama at the family’s Mississippi estate.

Happily Ever After: A Wedding Comedy By Mark Dunn JULY 16-21 It’s moments before her wedding, and Francie has barricaded herself inside the church nursery, convinced that she’s destined for a fairy-tale ending with another man … if he ever wakes up from his coma. Her mother’s determined to make loyal fiancé Kyle her son-in-law by any means necessary, the caterer is making eyes at the minister, and the whole town’s in a frenzy over a presidential visit — and that’s before Francie’s sleeping beauty makes a miraculous recovery. This madcap farce has a Texas twang and plot twists aplenty in the tradition of classic Kaufman and Hart.

Beehive – The ’60s Musical

Musical

Created by Larry Gallagher JULY 23-28

Beehive is the ultimate celebration of 1960s female empowerment. Featuring such timeless classics as “My Boyfriend’s Back,” “Be My Baby,” “Son of a Preacher Man” and “Me and Bobby McGee,” Beehive nostalgically recalls the days of miniskirts, transistor radios and flower power. Told from the perspective of six young women who came of age in this enigmatic decade, these young ladies look back on a host of issues ranging from their first Beehive Dance to the challenges we faced as a nation — all accomplished by a vast array of the most memorable songs of the era.

Living On Love

• Comedy By Joe DiPietro, based on the play Peccadillo by Garson Kanin JULY 30-AUG. 4

When a demanding diva discovers that her larger-than-life maestro husband has become enamored with the lovely young lady hired to ghostwrite his largely fictional autobiography, she hires a handsome young scribe of her own. Sparks fly, silverware is thrown, and romance blossoms in the most unexpected ways in this delightful and hilarious romantic comedy written by the playwright who brought us Over the River and Through the Woods.

Mamma Mia! • Musical Music and Lyrics by Benny Andersson, Björn Ulvaeus, Stig Anderson, Book by Catherine Johnson AUG. 6-11 We end our season with a bang! On the eve of her wedding, a daughter’s quest to discover the identity of her father brings three men from her mother’s past back to the Greek island they last visited 20 years ago. The story-telling magic of ABBA’s timeless songs propels this enchanting tale of love, laughter and friendship, creating an unforgettable show. A mother. A daughter. Three possible dads. And a trip down the aisle you’ll never forget!
