WHY CHOOSE STEPHENSON COLLEGE? Stephenson College has been offering apprenticeships for more than 20 years and is known throughout the UK for its excellence in training. The College currently has more than 1,000 students enrolled in a wide variety of apprenticeship training programs. The apprentices will learn vital new skills while gaining highly-relevant on the job training as they work towards a nationallyrecognised qualification. Apprentices, who must be aged 16 or over, get paid for working and learning in an area they enjoy and the skills they learn can help shape their long-term careers. The training takes at least 16 months while Advanced Apprenticeships can last for two years or more and those who successfully complete their apprenticeships will receive an n NVQ (QCF) Level 2 or NVQ (QCF) Level 3 certificate. The College is the UK apprentice training centre for Volvo Truck and Bus where its heavy vehicle technician training scheme is highly regarded and very well supported. The apprenticeship scheme with Volvo has been ongoing for 20 years. Stephenson College is also the national training centre for civil engineering company Ban Nuttall and that won them the National Apprentice Scheme Large Company Award for 2013-14. We are engaged with over 500 employees from micro-businesses to the larger ones such as Aggregate Industries, Ashfield In2Focus, BAM Nuttall, Brush Traction, Coalville Hospital, Derbyshire County Council, East Midlands Airport, East Midlands Trains, Euro-Projects Recruitment Ltd, The Fire and Rescue Service, Mansfield District Council, North West Leicestershire District Council, Papermoon Day Nursery and the RSPCA. We operate across three campuses in Nottingham and Coalville At Stephenson College we are very proud of the excellent reputation we enjoy for providing quality training and professional support to the business community The College works very closely with the business community to ensure that its apprenticeship programs are relevant, up-to-date and help close the skills gap to best support the needs of employers while helping develop the workforce of the future. What is an Apprenticeship? Apprenticeships are structured training programmes available for anyone aged 16 years or over. They offer an excellent opportunity to train new employees whilst they study for a nationally recognised qualification. An Apprenticeship gives employers the opportunity to train and shape a young person to their own high standards and instil their company ethos upon the employee from an early age

BENEFITS OF TAKING ON AN APPRENTICE • Employers who choose to take on a 16-18 year old apprentice only have to pay their salary. Their training is fully funded by the government • Government statistics show that nearly every employer that takes on an apprentice (96%) reported benefits to their business • 72% of employers reported that apprenticeships improved their productivity or the quality of their product or service • If you’re a small business, you may get a £1500 grant to help cover the cost of starting a new apprentice aged 16 to 24 years old

• One in five employers are hiring more apprentices to help them through the economic climate. • Apprenticeship programmes allow training to be undertaken either during work or out of work in order to minimise disruption to business operations. • Taking on apprentices have shown to significantly reduce staff turnover • Recruitment costs are significantly reduced

FUNCTIONAL SKILLS

Functional Skills are a vital part of any apprenticeship. They provide apprentices with the essential knowledge, skills and understanding needed to operate confidently, effectively and independently in everyday life and at work. Apprentices are taught English, Maths & Information Communication Technology (ICT) at both level one and level two standards through dedicated lessons within the college or through the workplace by prior agreement. Functional Skills in English Apprentices will develop their skills in reading, communication and writing building confidence in: • Reading and understanding texts using them to gather information, ideas, argument and opinions • Taking part in and contributing to formal and informal discussions and exchanges that include unfamiliar subjects • Writing a range of texts, including extended written documents, communicating information, ideas and opinions effectively Functional Skills in Maths Apprentices will develop their core mathematical skills giving them the confidence to: • Solve various mathematical problems using a variety of methods • Carry out calculations with number of any size in practical contexts to a given number of decimal places • Collect and represent discrete and continuous data, using information and communication technology (ICT) where appropriate Functional Skills in ICT Apprentices will develop their ICT knowledge to gain essential skills such as: • Enter, develop and refine information using appropriate software to meet the requirements of straightforward tasks • Use appropriate software to meet requirements of straightforward datahandling tasks • Combine information within a publication for a familiar audience and purpose

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS How long does an Apprenticeship last? An Apprenticeship can take between one and four years to complete depending on the level of Apprenticeship, the apprentice’s ability and the industry sector. How is training delivered? The Apprenticeship programme may involve one to one discussions, practical demonstrations, assignment work, assessments – both practical and theory online learning as well as formal taught sessions and workshops. Do apprentices spend a lot of time at College rather than the workplace? Not at all, apprenticeships are a mixture of on and off the job training, the majority of the training will be done in the workplace. What are my responsibilities as an employer? To provide a contract of employment, a minimum rate of pay and to deliver on the job training to the apprentice should you choose to take one on. They are similar to any other employee except they have extra training in place for them. When do apprenticeships start? An apprenticeship can be started at any date throughout the year (Subject to course framework).
