“
We look forward to hearing from you.
I have thoroughly enjoyed attending Stephenson College and would recommend the experience to anyone. I wasn’t a great fan of school and never dreamt of ever going back. As a consequence, I left early to pursue a career in construction. It’s taken me many years to realise that with my knowledge of the industry I could better myself. Studying for my HNC and the HND conversion in Building
Whatever your goal we will do our best to make you the best
Studies has been very demanding but at the same time rewarding. I currently work for a small construction company, my recent efforts have been recognised and I will soon be taking a more managerial role in the company. I have definitely caught the learning bug and wish to carry on my studying in the near future, possibly through work based qualifications.

QUESTIONS&ANSWERS
What is life at Stephenson College really like? It’s great, it’s far more than a College and it’s a valuable experience. The College offers students a dynamic and stimulating learning environment. As a student you will meet new people, make new friends and become more independent. You will be allocated a personal tutor at the start of your programme, who will help you settle in and provide general guidance and encouragement through regular tutorial reviews.
Where will my daughter/son go if they have any concerns? We have a team of friendly and approachable Student Advisers, Counsellors and Student Liaison Officers available to help them with any problems.
What if I have chosen the wrong course? All students are encouraged to complete an ‘early days’ survey; this ensures you are on the right course. You can also speak to a student adviser who will help. It is important to us that all students are happy on their course.
How will I know if my daughter/ son is attending College? The course tutor monitors student attendance and will (if the student is under 18) call you if there are any college related problems.
10

There are many activities organised for students throughout the year. We also organise sports events and off-site visits. These help the students develop their social skills, much sought after by universities and employers.
Does the College help with travel arrangements?
Are there facilities to buy a snack or meal?
We may be able to help with travel costs if a student is aged between 16–18 and taking a full-time course.

COLLEGE IN THE NEWS Careers Education Quality Award Rosemary Beard, Chief Executive of Connexions Leicestershire presented students and staff with the Career Mark Award. The Career Mark Award is awarded in recognition of the College delivering quality Careers Education and Guidance. To achieve the award the College had to meet a set of rigorous standards, including a complex portfolio of evidence and a one day assessment day. During the assessment day, held in March 2011 an assessor came and spoke to small focus groups of students from across the College to find out what their experiences have been with regards to careers education and guidance.
College hosts prestigious skills competitions Stephenson College recently hosted a number of national skills competitions the outcome of which would determine who would represent Team UK in the WorldSkills Finals. This competition is the skills equivalent to the Olympic Games and takes place in London from 5–8 October 2011. This event will be the world’s largest, international skills competition with young people from across the globe competing to be the best of the best in their chosen skill. The competition welcomes a thousand competitors from fifty countries competing in forty five skill areas over four exciting days of competition. Hundreds of visitors attended the College event and saw young people competing in a wide range of vocational areas that included; Welding, Wall & Floor Tiling, Plumbing & Heating, Electrical Installation, Bricklaying, Stonemasonry, Painting & Decorating, Cabinet Making, Joinery & Carpentry, Hairdressing, Plastering & Dry Wall Systems and Caring. Luke Welstead, a 19 year old bricklayer from Loughborough and former apprentice at Stephenson College, was one of the bricklayers competing for a place in Team UK. Luke, already Bricklayer of the Year and national champion, produced some excellent work but unfortunately, on this occasion, was not successful. However everyone at Stephenson College is very proud of Luke and what he has achieved, he is a very talented and inspirational young man.
Pictured above are Alicia Moyles, Careers Education Advisor – (Connexions), Jane Hart, Personal Advisor – (Connexions), students who were involved in the focus groups Rosemary Beard, Chief Executive – (Connexions), Nigel Leigh – (College Principal), Lucy Moore and Lynette Parker.

THE APPRENTICESHIPS WE OFFER INCLUDE:
My experience as a Business Administration Apprentice with Stephenson College and Nottingham City Council was an extremely enjoyable and successful one. The idea of improving my knowledge and skills, work experience and earning money at the same time is what first attracted me to apply for the apprenticeship. During my time at Stephenson College I found the staff very helpful and supportive, which ultimately helped me finish my NVQ Level 2 in just over 6 months. Unfortunately at the end of my apprenticeship I did not manage to secure a permanent position within the City Council due to the current economic climate, but I have no doubt that I would not have got my current job if I had not completed my apprenticeship with Stephenson College. CHILDREN AND YOUNG PEOPLE Early Years and Children’s Care Are you ready to join a dynamic and vitally important sector that needs high quality staff at all levels? A career in early years is rewarding, enjoyable and profoundly important. Most people who work in the sector love their jobs and look forward to going to work every day. Not only do you get to enjoy playing and having fun with children but you are also helping them to develop and learn. Children will use some of the skills they learn with you, such as how to get on with other children, for the rest of their lives. There are many different roles in the early years sector with opportunities for everyone to start a career, whether you want to work full or part time and in a range of roles. If you are interested in management, you could end up being your own boss, running your own nursery, with responsibility for staff, budgets and building effective relationships with parents. As you progress your early years career you could aspire to become an early years professional, combining both high level practitioner skills and leadership in a variety of settings.

What about becoming an electrical engineer? The world today would not be able to function without electricity, so the demand for electrical engineers is constantly on the rise. Electrical engineers design and develop a wide variety of electrical systems and products; these range from large scale factories down to household goods and appliances. Electrical engineers work with transformers, circuits, electrical parts and wiring to create products that rely on electricity to function. They are often given project specifications from their employers to which they have to work, usually in a team with other engineers and related people. They have many roles within projects, including creators, planners, designers and managers. They are involved with projects from start to finish and oversee every part of the process. As an engineer you might be involved in building prototypes, supervising construction plans, designing and drawing electrical systems, selecting appropriate materials, developing maintenance schedules and identifying and monitoring milestones along the project’s development.
