FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS We’re always here to help you in answering questions, providing support and making sure you have the best experience possible at the College. What is life at Stephenson College really like?

Will I be kept informed of my daughter’s/son’s progress?

What other activities are available at College?

It’s great, it's far more than a College and it’s a valuable experience. The College offers students a dynamic and stimulating learning environment. As a student you will meet new people, make new friends and become more independent.

If your daughter or son is under 18 and taking a Full-Time course you will receive a progress report and will also be invited to attend a parent consultation evening. Should you have any concerns you are welcome to make an appointment at any time.

There are many activities organised for students throughout the year. We also organise sports events and off-site visits. These help the students develop their social skills, much sought after by universities and employers.

You will be allocated a personal tutor at the start of your programme, who will help you settle in and provide general guidance and encouragement through regular tutorial reviews.

Does the College help with travel arrangements?

Where will my daughter/son go if they have any concerns? We have a team of friendly and approachable Student Advisers, Counsellors and Student Liaison Officers available to help them with any problems.

What if I have chosen the wrong course? All students are encouraged to complete an ‘early days’ survey; this ensures you are on the right course. You can also speak to a student adviser who will help. It is important to us that all students are happy on their course.

How will I know if my daughter/son is attending College? The course tutor monitors student attendance and will (if the student is under 18) call you if there are any college related problems.

Stephenson College

2012

Are there facilities to buy a snack or meal?

We may be able to help with travel costs via a subsidised bus pass or the bursary discretionary learners support fund.

There are modern and well-equipped catering facilities at both our Coalville and Nottingham Campus sites, offering a selection of value for money meals and snacks.

Does my daughter/son need to be in College when they do not have a lesson?

What are Apprenticeships?

Students are expected to supplement class time with individual study or group work.

How do I let my tutor know I’ll not be in today? You can phone or text to let us know if you are not attending College. Contact details will be given to you once you have enrolled. You will also receive a letter prior to enrolment containing this information.

Apprenticeships are a popular alternative for many school leavers and offer employment based qualifications, which allows you to ‘earn while you learn’. Trainees not only study NVQ's but also gain accreditation for Functional Skills. The College has a dedicated team of advisers for apprenticeships who can provide more information, please call on (01530) 519001.

Some of the work you might expect to be involved in when working in early years will include:

• Working with and supporting parents and other family members to improve their child's development.

Children & Young People

A career in early years is rewarding, enjoyable and profoundly important. Most people who work in the sector love their jobs and look forward to going to work every day. Not only do you get to enjoy playing and having fun with children but you are also helping them to develop and learn. Children will use some of the skills they learn with you, such as how to get on with other children, for the rest of their lives.

Stephenson College

2012

There are many different roles in the early year’s sector with opportunities for everyone to start a career, whether you want to work Full or Part-Time and in a range of roles. If you are interested in management, you could end up being your own boss, running your own nursery, with responsibility for staff, budgets and building effective relationships with parents. As you progress in your early years career you could aspire to become an early years professional (EYPS) combining both high level practitioner skills and leadership in a variety of settings. You could also progress onto an Early Years Degree.

• Encouraging children to develop social skills and discover more about the world through play. • Helping children to develop number and language skills through activities like counting games and storytelling. • Feeding, bathing and dressing babies and young children, changing nappies and preparing bottles or baby food. • Ensuring appropriate health and safety and child protection requirements are met.

Alternatively you may want to gain a qualification in schools or nurseries as you work. If you have passion, enthusiasm and enjoy working with young children then this could be the career for you.

Hair, Beauty & Complementary Therapies Customer care skills and creativity will take you a long way in this exciting and dynamic industry.

You could own your own business, work in salons, health clubs, spas, hotels or even on a cruise liner. Our experienced staff have an excellent reputation and has ensured we have a strong tradition of training high-quality hair, beauty and complementary therapy professionals. This year the College Hairdressing Salon was chosen to host a World Skills Team GB Selection Competition.

Stephenson College

2012

The event attracted hundreds of national and international visitors to the College and really did place the salon’s facilities at centre stage. Students also have the opportunity to undertake work experience and the College has excellent links with employers such as Steiner Cruise Lines, Champney Springs Health Resort and Ragdale Hall.

The facilities are superb. There is a large, well equipped hairdressing salon, two fully equipped beauty treatment rooms and a nail studio. The facilities are managed on a commercial basis and open to the public. All the courses include the study of practical skills, background theory and business skills. Our students achieve good results with achievement rates above national averages.
