If you are aged 16 - 18 full time courses are free. If you are 19 and over you are welcome on any of our full time courses, but there is a course fee, however concessions may apply. Arrangements for flexible payments can be made available depending on course fee.

If coming to college means extra cost to you, we may be able to help.

The College has Student Liaison Officers and a Student Union who organise a wide range of activities and events at the College. You can join the NUS free, but to get all the benefits of the NUS Discounts you need to purchase the NUS Extra Card. This offers discounts in shops, leisure centres, cinemas and nightclubs, however there is a charge. NUS Cards are available from Student Services or visit www.nus.org.uk

You may also be able to get help from the College’s Discretionary Learner Support Fund for travel costs, equipment and childcare.

The 16-19 Bursary Fund is a new scheme to help young people facing financial hardship to stay in full-time education. You will be eligible to receive a bursary of £1,200 a year if you are under 19 on 31 August in the academic year in which you start your full-time course and meet one of the following criteria: • You are in care

HOW DO I BECOME AN APPRENTICE?

You will be working in an area you enjoy and get paid, receiving a minimum of £104 per week or £2.60 per hour pro-rata with no student debts!

You must be 16 or over, living in England and not in Full-Time education. There are flexible entry requirements as Apprenticeships are not just based on academic achievement but are much more practical based. This qualification is suitable for school leavers and adults. The animal care industry is varied and offers employment opportunities in many different work places that include; animal sanctuaries, pet shops, boarding kennels, wildlife parks and charitable organisation e.g. the Blue Cross or the RSPCA. Candidates will be required to attend college and a suitable animal care placement e.g. boarding kennels. What qualifications or experience do I need? You will need commitment and a genuine interest in working with animals. You will also attend an interview and take an initial assessment. How long is the course? 1 year full time = 36 weeks. What will I learn? You will cover a range of subject areas that include; how to provide suitable animal accommodation, movement and handling of small animals, principles of dealing with feedstuffs for small animals, assisting with feeding. In addition to the above you will also be required to complete the following; functional skills (Numeracy, ICT & Literacy) and employment & self development skills How will I learn? Through workshops, group sessions & tutorials, you will also get practical experience in a work place setting. How will I be assessed? The Level 2 Diploma in Animal Care is designed to enable you to learn the basic practical skills in animal care as well as the theoretical knowledge, to help you to pursue a career in the animal care industry. What qualifications or experience do I need? You will need 2 GCSE’s at Grade D, GCSE English is desirable , or the Level 1 Diploma in Animal Care.

This qualification has been developed by the equine industry to replace NVQ Level 2 in Horse Care, and has been developed from the Equine National Occupational Standards. This course is primarily for candidates aged 16 plus, also candidates over the age of 19, who may be looking to retrain at this level, or to improve entry into employment. What qualifications or experience do I need? Entry requirements are four GCSEs at grade D or above, plus Grade C or above English Language or a Level 1 qualification.

How long is the course? 1 year full time = 36 weeks.

Course Length What will I learn? The course offers an opportunity to learn through practical tasks and developing skills through handling and maintaining a variety of animals. Work experience will also be necessary. You will cover a range of subject areas that include; animal health and welfare, animal feeding, animal accommodation, animal behaviour, control and restraining animals, dog grooming, health and safety. There is also a choice of optional topics and the course will also include First Aid. How will you be assessed? Methods of observation will include; direct observation, professional discussion, oral questioning, written assignments, reflective accounts, witness evidence and projects. Industry related work experience will also take place in a variety of settings. What materials & equipment will I need? Equipment requirements will be discussed at your interview. On completion of the Technical Certificate you need to gain employment with a plumber to enable you to work towards gaining Plumbing NVQ Level 2. Once the qualifications achieved you can progress on to the Plumbing Technical Certificate Level 3.

The next step is the 2330 level 3. To gain the full electrician certificate you will need the Level 2 and Level 3 technical certificates or an NVQ Level 3. You will need to gain employment with an electrical contractor to achieve full electrician status.
