We’re committed to your future Stephenson College is an Official Sponsor of the Skills Show for the next three years. The Skills Show takes place at the NEC Birmingham 15th - 17th November and is the biggest Skills and Careers event in the UK. Stephenson College is delighted to be an Official Sponsor of the Skills Show as we see this as a great opportunity to highlight and celebrate what further education has to offer and to showcase vocational opportunities for young people.

Our Sports students will be taking part in an ‘Emergency First Aid’ scenario that will be presented on each day of the show. Stephenson College is the East Midlands Hub of the National Skills Academy for Environmental Technologies and our Building Services students will be helping to construct an ECO house to demonstrate their skills.

Stephenson College is heavily involved in the Skills Show and will be taking part in a range of activities during the event. Our College is represented in the ‘Further Education Feature’ by Hair & Beauty and Painting & Decorating students and staff who will be encouraging visitors to ‘have a go’ at various activities.

Vocational education plays an essential part in the efficiency and competitiveness of our industries and is fundamental to the success of the economy. The Skills Show will promote and reinforce the importance of vocational education to a wide audience on a national stage.

THE 16-19 BURSARY FUND

If you are aged 16-18 most full-time courses are free. If you are 19 and over you are welcome on any of our full-time courses, but there is a course fee, although concessions may apply. Arrangements for flexible payments are also available dependent on your course fee.

This is a scheme to help young people facing financial hardship to stay in Full-Time education.

You may also be able to get help from the College’s Discretionary Learner Support Fund for travel costs or equipment etc.

You will be eligible to receive a bursary of £1,200 a year if you are aged under 19 on 31 August in the academic year in which you start your Full-Time course and meet one of the following criteria: • You are in care • You are a care leaver • You are independently in receipt of Income Support

SUPPORT FOR ADDITIONAL NEEDS We offer a wide range of help for students who are or have: • Autistic Spectrum Disorders • Blind/Partially Sighted • Deaf/Hearing Impairment • Mental Health Issues

ATTENDING COLLEGE AND WORKING PART-TIME

KEEPING SAFE

Studying full-time usually means attending College for approximately 16 hours per week, so you could be taking a qualification and working Part-Time.

Keeping safe and being made aware of the issues that affect young people is a high priority at the College and we do all we can to promote this to you. The College organises a number of events throughout the year that promote fitness, health, sexual awareness and a special ‘Impact Road Show’ that brings together the Emergency Services to demonstrate the consequences of dangerous driving. All College staff are trained to ensure the well being of all students during their time with us. The College also follows the ‘Safer Recruiters Process’ when recruiting new staff.

FREE COURSES FOR 16 - 18 YEAR OLDS All full-time courses at Stephenson College are free if you are aged between 16-18. If you are 19+ the fee is currently £598, but is subject to an annual review.

The introduction of Study Programmes Studying at college for 16-19 year olds (16-24 if you have a learning disability) is changing from September 2013. Courses in colleges across the country are being re-designed to make sure you get the qualifications and skills to help you be successful in the future.

Donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t worry if youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve missed out on the all important Grade Cs in your English or Maths GCSEs before coming to college. You will be entitled to a learning programme that keeps building up your skills and confidence to make a success of these subjects. The support you get will enable you to take the GCSEs again when you are ready, with the opportunity to get functional skills qualifications as well.

Whether your plans after college are to get a job or to go onto University, you will follow a programme that includes a main qualification along with great personal support and work experience that fits in with your course and career aims.

HOW DO I BECOME AN APPRENTICE?

You will be working in an area you enjoy and get paid, receiving a minimum of £106 per week or £2.65 per hour pro-rata with no student debts!

You must be 16 or over, living in England and not in Full-Time education. There are flexible entry requirements as Apprenticeships are not just focused on academic achievement but are much more practical based. If you are not employed, we will match your details against any vacancies we have on file while you also apply for jobs.

With this great foundation to build on, you will have a wide range of options available to you in the future.

Course Level 3

The Access to Nursing and Health course is a QAA approved full-time course designed for mature students (over 19 years old). It is particularly suitable for people who have been out of education for some time and need to develop or rediscover their confidence and academic skills before progressing onto nurse or health training.

The Access to Teaching course is a QAA approved fulltime course designed for mature students (over 19 years old). It is particularly suitable for people who have been out of education for some time and need to develop or rediscover their confidence and academic skills before progressing onto a Teaching Degree.

What qualifications or experience do I need?

There are no entry requirements other than an interest in the course and the opportunities that it offers, coupled with a good standard of written English and reading comprehension. Intended for students interested in a career in electrical installation, this course includes theory and practice and is designed as a starting point for those seeking to become trained electricians. The course covers the electrical industries, science for electricians, health and safety (including accident prevention), wiring, circuits, cabling, inspecting and testing, and customer service skills.

This course is an introduction to basic construction crafts. It covers basic woodwork, brick/plastering, tiling and the health & safety issues associated with these occupations.

What qualifications or experience do I need?

You must have a good general level of education including GCSE English and Maths (at least grade D) and preferably a GCSE in a science or technical subject. You should have an interest in electrical installations and be motivated to improve your English, mathematics and IT in order to succeed. You will need to have at least a Level 1 qualification in literacy and numeracy. You will have an initial assessment at the College. You will need to complete an application form and attend an interview, which will give you the opportunity to ask detailed questions about the course.

This course will give you a basic understanding of brickwork and the construction industry. Practical sessions will start with basic brickwork leading to an end practical test involving solid brick and cavity walls. Health and Safety will also play an important role in the qualification.

The Bricklaying Diploma Level 2 is designed to prepare students for work in their particular occupational area. This technical certificate will give you all of the technical knowledge you will need that is recognised by the building trades industry.

The course consists of seven units. These are split into two parts knowledge and skill. At the end of each unit there will be a test and a final exam to prove your general understanding of the course.

This course is aimed at anyone wanting to continue to develop onto the Level 2 (possibly from Level 1) but could also be starting at this level with appropriate experience. This is a very practical course and is based around working and learning in the motor vehicle industry.

The National Diploma is a quality course which will adequately prepare you to enter a career in motor vehicle industry. The course involves attending College three days a week for two years and one week work experience each year.

The course involves understanding why and how motor vehicle systems operate. You will strip down cars and their components to fully understand and carry out fault diagnosis. What qualifications or experience do I need? You will usually already hold a Level 1 qualification in light motor vehicle engineering, and have GCSE grades equivalent to C in Maths and English. However, entry is by interview and will be based on your previous experience, school qualifications, knowledge and enthusiasm. “ When I first arrived on this course I was extremely shy and hesitant to make friends. However, I believe this course has changed me for the better. I would never be able to go to university without the confidence and experience this course has given me. The residential trips were great as they are a good way to make friends and develop teamwork and leadership skills. Yorkshire was my favourite trip and it was a challenge for everyone. We faced different types of common fears such as heights, small spaces and water but I believe it has developed me as a person.

The National Diploma in Uniformed Services is ideal if you want a career in the Police, Fire, Prison, Security or Ambulance Services, the Armed Forces, HM Customs & Excise, community service organisations or emergency service related organisations. Progression to higher education is also an option.

This qualification will give you education and training which can help you start a successful career in the uniformed services or progress to a more responsible job if already in employment.

What qualifications or experience do I need? You must have a good First Diploma in Uniformed Services or a minimum of 5 GCSEs at grade (A-C), a keen interest in entering one of the uniformed public services, together with commitment, a positive attitude and determination. You will also attend an interview, take an Initial Assessment and be invited to attend a course experience day prior to starting your course.

The BTEC National can also be a route to further study. The course is designed to be adaptable to your needs, interests and career aspirations. The structure of the course allows you to focus on your interests within the sector, such as outdoor and adventurous expeditions, crime and its effects on society or diversity and the public services. Please note that the units studied may vary to meet local or learner needs. What qualifications or experience do I need? BTEC First in Public Services and/or five GCSEs (C or above) and, in addition, the interest and potential to succeed in achieving the qualification.

You will cover a range of subject areas that include; government, policies and the public services, citizenship, understanding discipline and diversity, physical preparation and fitness, war & terrorism, skills for land, crime, planning & management of major incidents, wireless communication and employment skills. You will also learn functional skills which are English, Maths and ICT as required. How will I learn? You will develop skills and practical experience, working with people, communication, planning, researching and evaluating information. How will I be assessed? You will collect work in your portfolio which will be assessed as you progress the course. What materials & equipment will I need? You will need to purchase a uniform at the beginning of term. You will cover a range of interesting subject areas that include; leadership & teamwork, citizenship, diversity & the public services, understanding discipline, fitness testing & training, physical preparation, health & lifestyle for the public services, crime & its effects on society, employment. The underpinning knowledge is delivered using a range of methods, including tutorials, group work and projects. You are encouraged to develop the skills and knowledge which will allow you to work independently where possible. Practical activities will play a central role within the course. You will be required to participate in residential camping & adventurous activities. How will I be assessed? Each unit will be internally assessed using a variety of methods; presentations, assignments & practical observations. What materials & equipment will I need? Where could this course lead to?

You could progress to the HNC/HND or Degree in a related field. A National Diploma in Public Services is a good basis for working in any of the Public/Uniformed Services. The course is also an excellent grounding for many other types of employment and it keeps your options open.

The Level 3 Extended Diploma in Uniformed Public Services is equivalent to three A Levels, and it is possible for you to progress into Higher Education, as successful Diploma qualifications give UCAS points for university applications.
