This means we are able to design courses that link together and build on your existing qualifications.

Financing your higher education programme

We appreciate that the financial implications are an important factor when considering a higher education course and at Stephenson College we will do our best to offer help to overcome this barrier. In the first instance studying a higher education qualification at Stephenson College will cost significantly less than attending university. The two main costs associated with studying a higher education course are tuition fees and maintenance (living) costs. Financial help is available from the Student Loans Company as follows: Full-time students may be eligible to apply for: ■

How do I apply?

Full-time applications

Mature students and returning to study

Applications for Higher National Diplomas and full time Foundation Degree courses are via the UCAS Online Application Form. This should be processed through your school or college; however we are happy to help if requested.

The College welcomes applications from mature students and anyone wishing to return to study. Mature students may not be required to meet the formal entry requirements. The College also offers Access to Higher Education programmes to help you progress on to a higher education qualification.

If you are not at school or college you can apply as an individual by logging onto www.ucas.com/apply. Applicants are advised to apply as early as possible after carefully considering the course you are interested in, although we are happy to accept applications through UCAS at any time of the year. Additionally there may still be time to get a place through Clearing. This is an opportunity for students to apply directly to institutions for a place on a higher education course.

Part-time applications: Part-time application forms are available from Student Services or the College Higher Education Advisor - please make applications directly to the College.

School or college leavers If you are about to leave school or college and not sure which direction you would like to take, we are always available to assist and can offer specialist advice and guidance to help you make the right choices.

Following a successful interview and (where applicable) the university sanction, you may be offered a place. Student Union As a student at Stephenson College you will automatically become a member of the Student Union. Membership is free but to be able to access NUS discounts you will need to buy the NUS Extra Card. This offers many discounts in shops, leisure centres, cinemas, and nightclubs. NUS cards are available from Student Services or by visiting www.nusonline.co.uk.

FOUNDATION DEGREES

What is a Foundation Degree? Foundation Degrees are intermediate, work-related degree level qualifications, designed with employers. They combine academic study with workplace learning and equip you with the relevant knowledge, understanding and skills needed to improve your performance and enhance your career prospects. Foundation Degrees allow those in employment to undertake a programme of study to get ahead in their chosen career whilst continuing to work. You can also take a Foundation Degree when returning to work or changing your career. In most cases the Foundation Degree takes two years and you can choose to ‘top up’ your qualification at a university. Progression On completion of a Foundation Degree there is the opportunity to progress to a full Honours Degree with additional full-time study, (this can also be taken on a part-time basis over a longer period of time). The Business Foundation Degree provides a general business qualification. The programme encompasses the skills and knowledge required to enhance professional practice, improve employment prospects and raise standards within the business sector.

This qualification is awarded through Derby University and on successful completion you could progress to a full EYPS Honours Degree or Teacher Training. In addition the programme will enhance your professional practice.

This qualification is awarded through Nottingham Trent University who have established Bachelor programmes as progression opportunities in Business Studies.

Management

This is a dynamic programme run in partnership with Nottingham Trent University. The course is designed to equip graduates with the skills, knowledge and understanding they need to be successful in the construction management and quantity surveying sectors of the construction industry. This qualification is awarded through Nottingham Trent University who have established Bachelor programmes as progression opportunities in Construction Management.

The Foundation Degree will be awarded through the University of Bradford who have established Bachelor and Masters programmes in Dementia Studies as a progression opportunity. This course is designed for health practitioners working in settings that provide dementia care. The course will enhance your professional practice, therefore raising the care standards for dementia services.

HIGHER NATIONAL CERTIFICATES

What is an HNC/HND? Higher National Diploma (HND) is studied over two years full time covering 10 modules. HNC stands for Higher National Certificate and is a two-year programme taken either by day-release or evening study covering 16 modules. The qualifications are designed to provide you with the right balance between knowledge and workrelated skills. In this way you gain real employment options at the end of only two years study, as well as opportunities to progress to further higher education programmes.

These courses are designed to equip students with the necessary knowledge and skills to enhance their prospects in a highly competitive and ever changing labour market. They are linked into National Vocational Qualifications and, as such, are nationally recognised both by employers and a number of professional organisations. Being enrolled on these courses enables free student entry in to some professional bodies i.e. Member of the British Institute of Architectural Technologists (MBIAT), Institute of Civil Engineers and the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB). Students can then progress to Degree level courses.

The Higher National in Computing is designed for those who wish to work, or are already working with computers in a professional capacity. The aim of the programme is to develop a sound understanding of how computers work and can be used in a wide variety of ways to support business, industrial, commercial educational and public sector organisations.

These courses are designed to produce technicians with a sound grounding in the principles of electrical and electronic engineering. There is a major skills shortage in the UK for qualified engineers who can undertake a variety of jobs in areas such as management, design, development, planning, control, marketing and sales and can apply their knowledge in work-based situations. These programmes provide a comprehensive coverage of electrical and electronics theory and practice. They are designed to give a broad understanding of the electrical and electronics industry, whilst allowing you to develop your own specialist skills in the second year. You will be encouraged to participate in work experience during the programme and this usually involves a work based project.

This programme is intended to provide students with the technical education required to compete on level academic terms with senior technicians. The syllabus covers a broad-based engineering spectrum, including design production and plant subjects, with an emphasis on hands-on instructions on computer applications in engineering. ■

Motor Vehicle Engineering Higher National Certificate (HNC)

Vehicle Operations Higher National Certificate (HNC)

The HNC programmes are structured to develop the student who works, or wishes to work, in a vehicle related environment. The development will cover a range of units focusing on both managerial and practical applications in vehicle operations. The HNC is recognised by universities as a suitable entry requirement for Degree level courses. You could also progress to employment in a vehicle franchise, fleet management or start your own business.

Professional Diploma in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector (DTLLS)

This is the mandatory professional qualification for teachers in the lifelong learning sector. You will already be employed in the sector, but on successful completion of the course you could progress into a course coordinator role, management or gain promotion. ■

Sport (Coaching and Sports Development) Higher National Certificate (HNC)

This programme is particularly relevant to students wanting a career in sports coaching or sports development. Students will develop the knowledge, performance and skills required to coach sports performance as well as the understanding of managing and evaluating sports development strategies. On completion of the programme you can progress onto an HND, full Degree, or top-up Honours Degree depending on achievement of the specific entry requirements. You can also enter the field of sports coaching as a profession (with appropriate coaching qualifications), sports development or other fitness and leisure industries.

LEVEL 4 QUALIFICATIONS

LEVEL 4 QUALIFICATIONS ■

Accounting (AAT) - NVQ Level 4

The AAT Accounting qualification is ideal for anyone wanting to work as an accounting technician. This vocational course provides the knowledge and skills to perform the tasks demanded by this role. It offers you the chance to gain a useful and practical qualification, while learning at your own pace. Once you’ve completed your studies and you become a full member, you are entitled to use the letters MAAT after your name. You can also register to work for yourself - the AAT has 1,600 members in practice offering accounting and taxation services to small businesses and the public. Once you’ve achieved the AAT Accounting qualification, you may be eligible for exemptions from the foundation stage exams of all the UK charted accountancy bodies. Full details of exemptions are available on the AAT website at www.aat.org.uk/charteredaccountancy. On completion of this course students can progress to the Business Foundation Degree.

Business & Administration NVQ Level 4

Business and Administration NVQs are aimed at staff working in administration roles across all occupations and sectors of employment. The level 4 qualification is intended for individuals who are working at a senior level with considerable responsibility for the management of systems and resources, who work with an extensive degree of autonomy. The individual’s role will involve developing and monitoring facilities and resources to maintain an administrative service within the organisation. On completion of this course students can progress to the Business Foundation Degree.

LEVEL 4 QUALIFICATIONS

Leadership for Care - NVQ Level 4

This course is designed for candidates working in adult care services at management level. The units are related to the management of systems and structures in an organisational context. This course enables the student to be a Registered Manager within care services and could lead on to Higher Education e.g. the Foundation Degree in Dementia Studies. ■ ■

Customer Service - NVQ Level 4

This qualification is suitable for candidates who have a role that is clearly linked to customer service, or who may have a general management job that involves customer service. It would also suit consultants or specialists who have a responsibility for a particular aspect of the business which impacts directly on customer service. On completion of this course students can progress to the Business Foundation Degree. ■

Health & Social Care - NVQ Level 4

This course is designed for candidates working in adult care services at a senior level. The units are related to the management of care services. The programme recognises the mix of advanced practitioner functions in first line managerial responsibility. On completion of this course there is an opportunity for further career progression, or as a stepping stone towards the Registered Managers Award or a Foundation Degree in Dementia Studies. Site Management - NVQ Level 4

The course is designed for Building Management practitioners in both the private and public sector. It is suitable for both established building site managers and those who are developing their abilities in this occupation. This course will allow you to apply for your CSCS Management Card which will soon become law; however most construction projects have already adopted it as mandatory. On completion of this course students can progress to the Foundation Degree in Construction Management. 13
