Virtual libraries are vital to the 21st-century educator in instructing students in using, evaluating, and producing information. A virtual library is necessary to teach life-long information literacy skills to students through active use of quality Internet tools and resources.

Advantages of teaching information literacy using the virtual library •

Team teaching of online courses.

Students get benefits of teacher/media specialist collaboration.

Planning is easier when all information is located together in one location/domain.

Can provide appropriate services for students as well as educators.

Betty J. Morris, PhD, is professor and chair of the library media program of the Department of Educational Resources, Jacksonville State University in Jacksonville, Alabama. The Library Media Graduate program has recently changed to an online degree program. Dr. Morris has successfully transitioned the program. All courses are conducted in a 21st Century virtual distant learning environment. Dr. Morris stresses the importance of information literacy skills in today’s digital world.
