ELEMENTAL FANTASIA
CONCEPT
Science and technology are ever-changing. Scientists conduct scientific research to advanced knowledge. The good side of science and technology is that it inevitably would assist and improve human lives but on the contrary, people may become too reliant on technology and fascinated about the superficial layer of things without detail understanding the logic and technology behind, which might also result in lacking inter-communication and interaction between people and nature.

Hong Kong Science Museum and Hong Kong Museum of History is located at the fringe of Tsim Sha Tsui, bounded by Science Museum Road to the Northeast, Granville Road to the Southeast and Chatham Road South on Northwest and is surrounded by commercial buildings. The new annex building is to be built at the corner of Science Museum Road and Granville Road. The proposed site is to be located at the rooftop of the new Annex building with two sides opened to existing road.
Albert Einstein quoted, “Look deep into nature, and then you will understand everything better.” As the middle of the energizing experiences or last point of the visit to the museum, the rooftop garden has the capability to provide a ‘take-a-break’ time and space for visitors to interact and appreciate nature. The rooftop garden not only provides a leisure and natural environment for the visitors, but also to provide a self-reflection and meditation environment for people to review the strength of technology and how science has impacted on us and most importantly on how human and nature could live with science and technology but at the same time to create better living and a better world.
Wind Analysis
Traffic Analysis
Daylight Analysis
Regarding the wind rose study, most of the prevailing wind mainly comes from the east in summer, and from the northeast in winter. The airflow at the center of Tsim Sha Tsui is not only coming from the Victoria Harbour, but also along Chatham Road South and re-directed by the buildings. Therefore, the west corner of the site will be the strongest and key wind direction to the site.
Bus terminal is located opposite the Museum in which visitors mainly comes from Granville road and Science Museum Road. Moreover, a new entrance will be provided at the west corner of the new Annex which shall become another focal point of the new museum.
The roof top garden is orientated at the west corner of the Science Museum. As the new Annex building is to be built with similar height as the opposite building, the rooftop garden can still be provided with plenty of daylight during the day.

Mechanism Application, Sustainability & Maintenance Consideration
Plantation plays the most important role in the curation of visitor experience in Elemental Fantasia. The atmosphere of the ground also depends heavily on the combination of plants in terms of their colours, height & density. In that regard, the follow native and exotic species were selected.
Acalypha wilkesiana - Evergreen Shrub
We look into Capillary Action and its potential on temperature control. While the action itself is the ascension of liquids through permeable substance, our intervention creates a flat warped surface as the showcase of such action. We envision an after-effect of cooling as the water evaporates, which the cooled zone becomes an intangible boundary which defines the installation.

Zephyranthescandida - Exotic Groundcover
Eranthemum pulchellum - Exotic groundcover
Allamanda - Flowering Shrub

Reedgrass (Calamagrostis) - Flowering Grass
Red Baron - Native Grass
Gardenia jasminoides - Native groundcover

Piezoelectricity
Piezoelectric effect refers to the ability of material to generate an electric charge in response to applied mechanical stress. We propose to apply piezoelectric plates along the main circulation path on where daily traffic is expected. The generated electricity would power the sensors for floor lights scattered on the berm.
•
Tulbaghiaviolacea - Exotic - Groundcover
To collect sunlight for lower floor in daytime, and to recycle artificial light from lower floor as illumination of the roof garden in the evening, we made use of sun tunnels in narrow and wide radius. The effect would be a gentle sheen of light blending into the surrounding vegetation.
We are inspired by sculptor Phil Price who has focused on wind activated kinetic sculpture. We intend to bring in the same concept into the proposal. Dandelion, a species depends heavily on wind on its reproduction, was selected as the form not only to embody the movement and strength of the wind, but also to remake the spreading of dandelion seeds movements.

FSC wood or recycled timber to be used for the pedestrian walkway. BIPV panels to be integrated with the entrance glass canopy. Light tunnel to be introduced to provide natural daylight to the gallery space below. Rooftop to be entirely landscaped to reduce heat gain to the floors below
Plantation in varies heights, density and colours
Ground Gleams Floor lights on berm respons to visitors’ movements
There are altogether 6 types of roof lighting proposed which are low-maintenance and easily be reached except the mushroom lights which required a 1-to-1 replacement.
