The Experimental Art Foundation includes a number of internal and external spaces for public presentation of artwork and performances, along with a range of private work spaces and laboratories. In order to honor the site with such rich history, a series of interwinding art corridor inspiried by the existing site characteristic is inserted into the coal loader to provide a new experiment on art viewing and the coal loader.

Experimental Art Foundation [EAF] and associated landscapes on the old Coal Loader site at Waverton, near North Sydney. The coa loader is located in between the Ball Head natural reserve with rich diversity of greenary, the abandoned wharf that used to serve the coal loader and the Waverton residential area. Each with its own characteristic, yet managed to co-exist harmoniusly. Facinated by the interesting combination of history, nature, and present development of the site, this project aims at honoring the existing and signify the harmonius co-existence of the past and present through the new Experimental Art Foundation.

With the dark and elongated tunnel as the background, the spatial quality and atmosphere of dissecting the coal loader tunnel with patterns from existing site starts to appear.
To realize the concept, a solid structure is needed. Based on the site analysis, it is most suitable to pick the dynamic diagonal and vertical structure of the wharf as the reference and the coal loader as the space to be modified.

To record and combine the findings of the site, Conceptual Drawing 1 is made to integrate the observations made from the site visit. The aim is to illustrate the relationship between the main existing features of site, and the method chosen is
A new structure inspired by the wharf structure is inserted into the existing coal loader tunnel to introduce a new angle when traveling through the tunnel. The irregular and disorder wharf structure cuts through the tunnel, dissecting the tunnels into several part of massing. By extracting some of these parts, the spaces containing the arts are born.

ART EXISTING SITE ARCHITECTURE
To preserve as much of the coal loader as possible, The Art Foundation is formed by inserting a series of new art corridorand extracting parts of the coal loader structure to create exhibition spaces. Not only can the form and characteristic of the coal loader be preserved, the new walkway also cuts through the coal loader tunnel in all directions, revealing new faces of the coal loader visitors have never seen before. The walkway connects the residential area, the bush and the conservation hub nearby, linking the three distances site together. An extra level of exhibition platform is inserted in between the ground floor and the upper level of the cliff, acting as a transition between the upper level and the lower level. Both circulation paths direct the visitors toward the harbor and reveal the harbor step by step.

The viewing platform is designed to maximize users’ sensation experi ence through limiting their perception. It is achieved by controlling the dimness and visibility of the space so that the users have to rely on their sensation to locate themselves in the art foundation.

THE PROGRAMME
To tackle the above problem, a central void is placed in each unit to reduce the density of the building mass and to breath in the surroundings.
Lack of sunlight and view due to lack of openings
The layout of the existing terraces is long and narrow creating a dark and timid environment on the inside.
Elongated alignment of space is a typical layout of traditional terraces in Sydney. This layout allows efficient use of space but also lead to the following issues.
FLOW OF SPACE
Re-stacking the program to cre ate interesting overlapping of private and communal space. By placing the corridor in the central, right above the commu nal space facilitate inter-level interaction. The continuous green corridor from the pathway outside the unit goes through the living area and extend all the way to the roof. Creating a flow of space from outside to the inside, and bottomto the top. Due to the high density of the site, the separation between each unit is minimal. The crental void allows equal access to natural sunlight and directing the view inward.

GREENERY & ARCHITECTURE
Among the three types of common placement of green space, frontyard, back yard and courtyard, courtyard has the cloest relationship with the indoor space due to it’s central location. However, it is rare to be seen in small scale housing unit or terrace. This project propose a new spatial program that is built around the concept of “internal courtyard”
By inseting multiple small green platform along the central void and placing the private space around them, an “internal courtyard” is formed. Each of the small green platform is located at differnt levels, a vertically extend courtyard is

The interior space can be expanded by pulling out the movable layers of facade. On the other way around, pulling in the movable layers can create more outdoor space and even create an outdoor platform when combined with the neighbouring blocks. Fully open outdoor deck can merge with the neighbouring deck to form an outdoor event space. Sheltered outdoor deck create a semi-private space where you can enjoy the sunshine and the view while maintaining a certain degree of privacy Enclosed outdoor deck as an extension of the interior space.
