UNFINISHED BUSINESS When ensemble member Tracy Letts’s BUG opened at Steppenwolf in 2020 nearly two years ago, Anna D. Shapiro’s program note called the play “a study of terror and alienation.” Little did any of us know how prescient her note would prove to be. In the time since, we have all experienced our own terrors. Our own alienations. The last 20 months have been steeped in uncertainty—paradigms shifted, and our familiar world was turned upside down. There have been moments when none of us knew who to trust, or furthermore, where to seek truth. Confronted with the uncomfortable reality of how little we can control in a system we, perhaps, didn’t even know existed, we have been forced to examine our practices and adapt to ever-changing safety and social mores. Perhaps most vitally, we were forced to examine our priorities, allegiances and moral compasses. Not unlike Peter in BUG. So now, in a moment when our world still feels upended, as a pandemic continues to surprise us and disorient us, we return to BUG. This extraordinary production, whose original run was cut short, demands a constant responsibility to question our given circumstances. Our realities. There is unfinished business here. Things at Steppenwolf are changing: a new building, a new season, a return to live performance and us—two new Artistic Directors. The one thing that remains the same, however? Our need for each other. Our need to be in conversation with perspectives and experiences that are different from our own. Our need to lean on each other. To challenge each other to question. To think past ourselves and consider what systems we are unwittingly abetting. We cannot create in a vacuum. We cannot evolve without a challenge. We cannot thrive unless we’re willing to dance with our fears, uncertainties and our community.

Thank you for joining Steppenwolf Theatre. Here at Steppenwolf, we believe that creating our work—and the opportunity to share it with you—is a privilege. The ability to gather in this space and engage with perspectives other than our own is a privilege that we consider sacred. Because of this, it’s important to us that we acknowledge both the Indigenous land we occupy, as well as the hands that built the country and city we call home. We acknowledge that Steppenwolf Theatre sits on Native land. This area is the traditional homelands of the people of the Council of Three Fires, including the Ojibwe, Potawatomi and Odawa. For over 200 years, Native Nations have been forcibly removed from this territory. We acknowledge that this land continues to be a site of gathering and healing for more than a dozen other Tribal Nations and remains home to over 100,000 tribal members in the state of Illinois. We acknowledge that the United States was built at the often fatal expense of forcefully enslaved Black people. We acknowledge those who did not survive the Middle Passage and that some of our ensemble, staff, board and audience members might be direct descendants of those who were enslaved. We acknowledge those who still cannot safely walk down the street or sleep in their own homes and those who are still dying while fighting for their liberation. We acknowledge that Chicago, founded by Jean Baptiste Pointe du Sable, remains one of the most segregated and inequitable cities in our country. Steppenwolf aims to cultivate space for Black stories to be uplifted and for Black lives to be celebrated. We pledge to infuse our work with true values of anti-racism. We offer these acknowledgments and experiences into this space with respect and gratitude, along with the intention to spark more awareness, compassion and empathy for every life in our community. As Steppenwolf enters this next chapter in our history, the ensemble continues to evolve and expand. We are proud to highlight the election of our new Artistic Directors, outlined in red. It is also important to the artists who call this company home that we acknowledge our collective history. This includes recognizing members who have passed* and honoring those who have needed to step away for personal or professional reasons.** In this way, we are celebrating the dynamic relationship between artist and institution that defines an ensemble theater. We honor the extraordinary collection of artists who collectively built Steppenwolf and, by doing so, left an indelible mark on the American Theatre.

April 28 – June 12, 2022 In the New Ensemble Theater
November 11 – December 12, 2021 In the Downstairs Theater
In a giant country house filled to overflow on a long summer weekend in the Russian countryside, three generations collide in Yasen Peyankov’s extraordinarily funny and magical adaption of Anton Chekhov’s Seagull, the play that will open our new Round Theater. In classic Chekhovian style, an all-ensemble cast will wrestle with the eternal questions that haunt the intellectual artist class: What is Love? What is Art? When is Lunch? Please join us for this historical moment in Steppenwolf’s journey as we explore the work that inspired us, laugh at the battles that consume us and celebrate, together, all that makes us grateful for each other.
We will raise the curtain once again on our blistering and extraordinary revival of BUG by Tracy Letts, featuring ensemble members Carrie Coon and Namir Smallwood. Shut down one week before closing, this production’s return is our bold refusal to let the disaster of COVID rewrite our story. These stunning performances—and this award-winning production— will once again reverberate throughout our building and welcome back our audiences to the Steppenwolf they know and love: brave, brazen and defiant.
By ensemble member Rajiv Joseph Directed by Kenny Leon Featuring ensemble member Glenn Davis with Chris Perfetti March 3 – April 10, 2022 In the Downstairs Theater “King” LeBron James’s reign in Cleveland brings promise, prosperity and renewal to a city in desperate need of all three. It also brings together two childhood friends who communicate best when they are talking and arguing about sports. King James is an intimate exploration of the place that sports and athletes occupy in our emotional lives and relationships. It explores the star player’s impact on Cleveland, from his rookie season to the city’s historic championship, and the lives of these two unlikely friends whose turbulent relationship is best navigated through their shared love of the sport in a verbal game of one on one. Though he is never seen in the show, LeBron James serves as a symbol for the hopes, desires and fears that they have bottled up since childhood.
By ensemble member Tarell Alvin McCraney Directed by Kent Gash Featuring ensemble member
James Vincent Meredith with Daniel Kyri June 16 - July 24, 2022 In the Downstairs Theater Pharus Young, now a senior at the Charles R. Drew Prep School for Boys, an institution committed to building “strong, ethical black men,” endeavors to be the best leader of the school’s prestigious choir in its 50-year history. But in a world built on rites and rituals, should he conform to the expectations of his peers in order to gain the respect he desperately seeks? Written by Oscar-winning ensemble member Tarell Alvin McCraney (Moonlight), this Tonynominated play—threaded throughout with soulstirring a cappella gospel hymns—is the story of a young gay black man and his battle between identity and community.

Join us in the celebration of a new building, a new season and a new era at Steppenwolf. We are thrilled to invite you into our expanded home, unveiling the stunning new 50,000 square foot Liz and Eric Lefkofsky Arts and Education Center. Two new bars will be ready for business, the education wing—called The Loft—will be activated with teens and our stages will be set to bring you visceral performances and evocative artistry.
We’ve saved you a seat.

Enjoy the entire break by ordering and paying for your intermission refreshments before the show. When you exit the theater at the end of the first act, your drinks will be waiting for you. Need restaurant information or the score of the ballgame? Please visit our book shop and information desk at the south end of the main floor lobby. Hailing a cab after the play? STEPPENWOLF’S NEW LIZ AND ERIC LEFKOFSKY ARTS AND EDUCATION CENTER
AD
This company was founded over 45 years ago by a circle of students who craved a space to call their own. The Liz and Eric Lefkofsky Arts and Education Center continues that vision and amplifies its reach, becoming a place for students, educators and aspiring artists to call home. The fourth floor of the building, also known as The Loft, is a brand-new space designed to house all of Steppenwolf Education’s programming and inspire the next generation of theater learners, makers and appreciators.
