LINDIWE

WELCOME TO LINDIWE I heard a story that occurred during a rehearsal for THE SONG OF JACOB ZULU, our first collaboration with Ladysmith Black Mambazo. Director and ensemble member Eric Simonson was watching the founder of the group Joseph Shabalala speak to his bandmates in their native language, Zulu. Afterwards, Eric asked Joseph what he was saying to them. Joseph told him that he was telling “the guys” that “there are 10 people in our group, but there is an 11th person who is invisible. And that person is a thief who is trying to take the show away from us. So we must all watch out for the thief.” That story exemplifies the meaning of ensemble — a belief that both Steppenwolf Theatre and Ladysmith Black Mambazo share. Since the late 1960’s, the group has performed in small villages and large concert halls across the world. Their way of working is based on creating beautiful harmonies out of 10 individual voices. Their uncompromising creativity and drive have made them an international sensation. In 2013, Martha Lavey, former Artistic Director, asked Eric Simonson to create a new piece with the group. It had been over 10 years since the last collaboration and Martha felt it was time to explore a new story. After a long development process between Eric and the group, LINDIWE was written. A story about love, loss, sacrifice, and faith. The story has taken on a different weight with the loss of some of our ensemble members. This weight is also felt by Ladysmith Black Mambazo as they have also experienced loss in their group. Martha asked me to make sure that this play got produced. She longed to have our theater inhabited once again by the energy of Ladysmith Black Mambazo. One of the many things that makes LINDIWE so exciting is how the story directly connects Chicago and Durban, South Africa — the place the group now calls home. Bringing these two places together created an exciting opportunity for Eric to explore the musical heritage of Chicago Blues and mix it with the a capella harmonies of Ladysmith Black Mambazo. It is also an homage to theatrical collaboration between the places that birthed each of our respective ensembles. What we do in the theater is ephemeral. There is a wistfulness and melancholy that is unavoidable at the end of a production. You have shared this intense experience of creating something singular, which ends on closing night. What are left are memories. Memories of moments shared. Memories of growing together. Memories of triumphs. Memories of challenges. The loss of Martha and other members of our ensemble has been felt every day at Steppenwolf. With this production, we honor their memories and celebrate together in the only way we know how — we tell stories. Anna D. Shapiro, Artistic Director

history. The word Black is reference to the black oxen, the strongest of the farm animals he worked with, so to announce the strength of the group’s vocal singing.

Mambazo is the Zulu word for chopping axe, a symbol of the group’s vocal ability. Ladysmith Black Mambazo has released over seventy albums, earning nineteen GRAMMY Award nominations and five GRAMMY Award wins, more than any other World Music group. Their most recent GRAMMY Award was for their 2017 album, Shaka Zulu Revisited: 30 Year Anniversary Celebration. When Nelson Mandela was released from prison, in 1990, he stated that Ladysmith Black Mambazo’s music was a powerful message of peace that he listened to while in jail. When Mandela was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize, in 1993, he asked the group to join him at the ceremony in Oslo. It was Mandela who called Ladysmith Black Mambazo “South Africa’s Cultural Ambassadors to the World.” The group sings from a traditional music style called isicathamiya (Is-Cot-A-ME-Ya), which developed in the mines of South Africa. It was there that black workers were taken to work far from their homes. Poorly housed and paid, the workers would entertain themselves, after a sixday week, by singing songs and dancing into the wee hours on Saturday night. When the miners returned to their homes, this musical tradition returned with them. In the mid-1980s, American singer/ songwriter Paul Simon famously visited South Africa and incorporated the group’s rich harmonies into the famous Graceland album (1986)—a landmark recording considered seminal in introducing World Music to mainstream audiences. In

addition to their work with Paul Simon, the group has recorded with Stevie Wonder, Dolly Parton, Sarah McLachlan, Josh Groban, Emmylou Harris and many others. They have provided music for many movies, as well as appearing on Broadway, in a previous Steppenwolf production. Joseph Shabalala retired in 2014, handing the group leadership to his four sons, Thulani, Msizi, Sibongiseni and Thamsanqa. In their hands and with their voices, the future of the group is assured to continue for years to come. Ladysmith Black Mambazo carries a message of Peace & Love as they travel the world year after year. They bring this message, in song and dance, to every theater they perform in. We hope you enjoy them as they spread their message. Eric Simonson (Playwright/Co-Director) is an ensemble member of Steppenwolf Theatre Company. Edited by Greta Honold As rehearsals began, playwright and co-director Eric Simonson, along with members of Ladysmith Black Mambazo, found time to answer some questions about their creative partnership, process, and the inspiration for this play. Here are some highlights from the conversation. Greta Honold: This is your third collaboration in a creative relationship spanning thirty years. How did it all begin? Eric Simonson: I first worked with Mambazo in 1989 I think, when Randy Arney asked me to direct The Song of Jacob Zulu. It was a brand new play about a young Black South African who was accused of bombing a shopping mall in protest against Apartheid. A very heartbreaking story. This was the first collaboration between Steppenwolf and Mambazo and it went very well. Ladysmith Black Mambazo: That show was a wonderful experience and success. It eventually went to Broadway and was nominated for six Tony Awards as well as having us win a Drama Desk Award. We developed such a bond with Eric that we quickly agreed to collaborate on a second play called Nomathemba. ES: One of my favorite Mambazo songs is called “Nomathemba.” It tells the story of a young man from the country searching for his bride, who has run off to the city. In the end they reunite and get married. Very simple. But a nice story that had reconciliation at its heart. By now it’s 1995 and apartheid is being dismantled. It felt like the right time to tell this story. So we put our resources together and made a new play named after 18 Features

the song: Nomathemba. It was very different in tone and substance than Zulu. Not a tragedy, but more hopeful. GH: What was the genesis of this collaboration on Lindiwe? ES: Well, Martha [Lavey, Steppenwolf’s former artistic director]. She was around for Nomathemba, on Steppenwolf’s staff while we were rehearsing that play. Something magical happens when Mambazo are in the rehearsal room. The theatre becomes exponentially happier when these guys are around and I think she remembered that. Also, she told me she’d been listening to an old Studs Terkel interview on which the guys and I appeared. I think she told me that’s when she got the idea — hey, let’s get the band back together! Lindiwe’s been years in the making. I don’t think we got the right idea for the play until about a year and a half ago. The ensemble was going through a very rough patch, mourning fellow artists who had passed, including Martha. Mambazo, too, has had its share of losses over the years. And the group has always been a source of hope and strength for Steppenwolf. I thought, wouldn’t it be nice if we created something that addresses the loss and mourning we were experiencing? What is it like to be an artist — or anyone for that matter — when you lose someone that is irreplaceable? This is something

we all experience and go through. Maybe we can make something that reaches people and wrestles with the tough questions that come with losing a loved one, a member of the family. Can whatever we create here, between these two artistic ensembles, be about that and learning how to confront death and loss? Can we make something that encourages us to grow rather than despair? GH: Can you talk about how you collaborated on the writing of this play? ES: We live on opposite sides of the world so it’s not easy. I pretty much run ideas for a story past them and they say yea or nay, and then I go off and write. We’ve had a few workshops for this and that’s when I get the most feedback. And Mambazo writes music very quickly. A lot of the songs are written during rehearsals when we’re figuring out how we get the play from one scene to the next, or deciding what information needs to come out when. This is not your average musical and it doesn’t get put together in the usual way. The process is sometimes messy and always organic. GH: Ladysmith Black Mambazo, in the script the character Lindiwe says that Chicago Blues is a part of South African music – can you tell us more about that, and the relationship between the two musical traditions presented in the play? LBM: So much of South African music is based on the emotions of sorrow and hope. It comes from the history and experience of our people. Sadly, this history has close relations to the experience of African American people so the connections in emotion and style, with American Blues music, are easy to detect. GH: Eric, it seems you have a real passion for working with performing

artists across genres. Where does that creative desire come from? ES: I actually studied to be a set designer in college. And I acted for a while too. I don’t know. My mom was a music teacher. We were always around music. I think I just like anything creative. Everything I do though, whether it’s film or opera or theatre or documentaries — it’s all about telling stories. I think ultimately that’s what I do. I tell stories. GH: And speaking of working across genres, Ladysmith Black Mambazo you are by now seasoned thespians, but coming primarily from the music world I wonder, what are the unique challenges of performing in plays? LBM: The biggest thing we have to adapt to, in regards to performing in a play, is keeping to exact dialogue and dance movements. When we perform our own concerts we are free to improvise our dancing and movements. Of course in theater we have to be in-line with the other performers so everything is syncopated. GH: Ladysmith, you have been to Chicago many times over the years and have had several extended stays in the city. What are your favorite things to do while you are here? LBM: We especially love walking around the city and talking with people we meet. Chicago people are very friendly and they love to talk about their city and how much there is to do. When the weather is nice most of our group loves walking near the lake. It’s so beautiful there. Of course there is so much music to enjoy in Chicago so we like to go to different music venues to see great local musicians. Features 19

THE STEPPENWOLF ENSEMBLE Steppenwolf Theatre Company is the nation’s premier ensemble theater. Formed by a collective of actors in 1976, the ensemble represents a remarkable cross-section of actors, directors and playwrights. Thrilling and powerful productions from Balm in Gilead and August: Osage County to Pass Over and Downstate—and accolades that include the National Medal of Arts and 12 Tony Awards—have made the theater legendary. Steppenwolf produces hundreds of performances and events annually in its three spaces: the 515-seat Downstairs Theatre, the 299-seat Upstairs Theatre and the 80-seat 1700 Theatre. Artistic programing includes a sevenplay season; a two-play Steppenwolf for Young Adults season; Visiting Company engagements; and LookOut, a multi-genre performances series. Education initiatives include the nationally recognized work of Steppenwolf for Young Adults, which engages 15,000 participants annually from Chicago’s diverse communities; the esteemed School at Steppenwolf; and Professional Leadership Programs for arts administration training. While firmly grounded in the Chicago community, nearly 40 original Steppenwolf productions have enjoyed success both nationally and internationally, including Broadway, Off-Broadway, London, Sydney, Galway and Dublin. Anna D. Shapiro is the Artistic Director and David Schmitz is the Executive Director. Eric Lefkofsky is Chair of Steppenwolf’s Board of Trustees.
