Little Critter®’s The Night Before Christmas by Mercer Mayer

‘Twas the night before Christmas and all through the house, Not a CRITTER was stirring, not even a mouse. Little Critter stars in this merry retelling of Clement C. Moore’s classic holiday poem, complete with a CD for kids to enjoy with the book. Mercer Mayer’s warm and witty illustrations add a humorous touch to this magical night, when Little Critter gazes in wonder at jolly Santa Claus, his old-fashioned sleigh, eight prancing reindeer, and a bundle of colorful toys.  A holiday classic now featuring a popular children’s book character  Includes a CD with original narration and music  Mercer Mayer’s Little Critter books have sold more than 150 million copies  A selection of Scholastic Book Club

About the Author Mercer Mayer attended the Honolulu Academy of Arts. Although he discovered illustration for children early on, his professor discouraged this career choice because he did not believe that Mayer would be able to make a living at it. But after years of pursuing other work, he returned to his first love, and received his first big break when a family friend gave him the names of some of the most reputable children’s book editors. Mayer set out with a bag filled with his sketches and doodles, and luck was with him: he was asked to illustrate The Gillygoofang for The Dial Press and Outside My Window for Harper and Row. The first book that was truly his own was A Boy, a Dog, and a Frog (The Dial Press, 1967) followed by his classic picture book There’s a Nightmare in My Closet a year later. In 1976, he joined Golden Publishing and soon began publishing his Little Critter® and Little Monster® books. These series contain the work for which he is best known.

Ten Big Toes and a Prince’s Nose by Nancy Gow, illustrated by Stephen Costanza

There once was a princess so lovely and fair with ruby red lips and a mane of brown hair. Her voice was like honey; her smile soft and sweet. But the beautiful princess had gigantic feet. Poor princess! When suitors saw her feet, they ran for the door before even getting to know her. And in another land, far away, a kind prince had a similar problem: although he was funny and kind, he also had a huge nose that scared off every maiden he met. But a serendipitous meeting on a ski slope teaches this adorably flawed (and well-matched) pair an important lesson: I am what I am and that’s all right with me. I don’t have to be different, I just have to be. I don’t want to be somebody else. No sir-ree! I am what I am and that’s all right with me. With whimsical surprises, lavish art, and a fantastical story about love and acceptance, this picture book will delight readers of any age.  A funny story that lightly delivers the message that every one of us is beautiful and can be loved  Lively rhyme and rhythm make this a great read-aloud  Lush illustrations set a beautiful scene and also exaggerate the characters’ flawed features in a humorous way

About the Author Nancy Gow has been a rock singer and a yoga teacher, but her favorite occupation is writing for kids. This book is for all the slightly imperfect princes and princesses out there who have yet to discover their inner beauty.

About the Illustrator Stephen Costanza is the illustrator of Noodleman, The Pasta Superhero, by April Sayre, and the illustrator/author of Mozart Finds a Melody. He lives in Belfast, Maine.

Brownie Groundhog and the February Fox by Susan Blackaby, illustrated by Carmen Segovia

“On the second day of February, a groundhog named Brownie woke up…” Happy Groundhog Day! But when Brownie steps outside, there’s not even the slightest sign of spring—just her shadow, a frosty field, and a hungry fox who wants to munch her for lunch. Determined not to become a meal, Brownie finds a clever and tasty way to melt the ice and turn Fox into a friend…and make the wait for winter’s end a little warmer. Susan Blackaby’s deliciously witty writing and Carmen Segovia’s adorable animals and stunning landscapes combine to create a picture book filled with springtime joy. Just right for reading with a cup of cocoa and cinnamon toast… Brownie’s favorite meal!  A story about an unusual friendship, and about getting along with those very different from yourself

About the Author Susan Blackaby’s first picture book, Rembrandt’s Hat, was praised by Publishers Weekly as a “satisfyingly spontaneous and quirky tale…simply ‘fedorable.’” Susan is also the author of Sterling Biographies®: Cleopatra—which “leaves readers fascinated and eager to learn more” (School Library Journal)—and a poetry collection, Nest, Nook, and Cranny. Susan lives in Portland, Oregon.

About the Illustrator Carmen Segovia is an award-winning illustrator who lives in Barcelona, Spain. One winter, she chose to sketch a little groundhog that wakes before spring and passes the time by sliding down a snowy hill, and building a “snow friend.” The paintings were selected for the Bologna Children’s Book Fair Illustrators Exhibition where Carmen’s American editor became determined to create a book starring the groundhog. Carmen’s first picture book in the US was China Doll, by Elza Pilgrim.

Three- and four-year-olds will love the challenge of Easy First Puzzles, which tests their familiarity with everyday words and concepts. By completing a maze, they’ll help Bo Peep find her sheep. “Picture Crossword” fun begins with an image, such as a bird, house, or school desk; the object, then, is to write its name in the grid. Other activities include an “Up in the Air” connect-thedots featuring things you’ll see in the sky and “Shoe In,” where kids match up shoes (such as ballerina slippers) with their likely owners.

Math Workbooks for the Gifted Student

Prepare Young Learners for School

Math for the Gifted Student contains almost two hundred pages of carefully calibrated math activities. Avoiding practice drills in favor of logicbased activities provides kids with a chance to grow and challenge themselves beyond the work they do in the regular classroom. The advanced content is rich in problem solving and develops critical and creative thinking.

Designed to build a solid foundation for math and reading, each book in the Preschool Skills series introduces an important early-learning concept through matching, coloring, drawing, and patterning exercises.

Sterling Biographies®: Chief Joseph

Sterling Biographies®: Geronimo

The Voice for Peace

Apache Renegade

by Lorraine Jean Hopping

by George Sullivan

“ From where the sun now stands, I will fight no more forever.” —Chief Joseph

“No gun can ever kill you.” Those are the magical words Geronimo heard whispered in the air, and that he believed true. Although his name is often linked with violence and even savagery, Geronimo’s early life was actually peaceful. What transformed him into one of the most renowned warriors in the Apache nation, a man whom the U.S. government wished captured or killed at any cost? This gripping biography captures the often-tragic experiences that defined the life of this fearless leader.

Chief Joseph was a peace chief, a great leader who truly believed his nation, the Nez Perce, could live in harmony with white people. Tragically, it was not to be. This fascinating biography separates fact from myth, and tells the compelling story of a man who tried to fight injustice with words, not weapons.

About the Author Lorraine Jean Hopping is the author of the award-winning Bone Detective: The Story of Forensic Anthropologist Diane France, which received the 2006 Outstanding Science Trade Book “Selector’s Choice” award from NSTA/CBC, and more than 30 other children’s books. For titles and biographical information, visit her website at www.hoppingfun.com. She lives with her husband, Chris Egan, in Ann Arbor, Michigan.

Sterling Biographies®: Pocahontas

Sterling Biographies®: Sacagawea

A Life in Two Worlds

Crossing the Continent with Lewis & Clark

by Victoria Garrett Jones The tale of the Powhatan princess from the Virginia woodlands is one of the best known and most loved in American history. While myth and legend have clouded some of the details, time has not diminished her bravery, selflessness, and commitment to peace. Nearly four centuries after her death, Pocahontas remains an inspiration, and her story will captivate every young reader.

by Emma Carlson Berne While traveling with the Corps of Discovery across America’s thenuncharted West, Sacagawea—with a baby strapped to her back—endured unimaginable dangers. We know little about her thoughts and feelings, since she left no records of her own, but without her, Lewis and Clark certainly could never have succeeded. Emma Carlson Berne separates truth from legend, and offers some ideas on what eventually happened to this strong and fascinating woman.

Sterling Biographies®: Sitting Bull

Sterling Biographies®: Tecumseh

Great Sioux Hero

Shooting Star of the Shawnee

by George Edward Stanley “I wish it to be remembered that I was the last man of my tribe to surrender my rifle.” Sitting Bull lived and died for his people, the Sioux of the Great Plains. Renowned author George Edward Stanley traces Sitting Bull’s lifelong fight for justice and struggle to retain his tribe’s ancestral lands, as well as the battle at Little Bighorn and the terrible massacre at Wounded Knee that occurred in the wake of his death.

by Dwight Jon Zimmerman To white authorities in the newly independent United States, Tecumseh seemed like a different type of chief: defiant and determined to protect Indian rights. Not even the power of the government awed this fearless Shawnee leader. Young readers will be fascinated by the life story of this great warrior and orator who tried to unite all the tribes in a single, powerful confederacy.

Beyond Time-Out From Chaos to Calm

by Beth A. Grosshans, PhD, with Janet H. Burton, LCSW Magazines such as Time and Newsweek have described parents as living in “mayhem” and “madness” with their out-of-control, undisciplined children. How did our families get to this state? To child psychologist Dr. Beth A. Grosshans, a half-century of parenting advice—with its time-outs—is largely to blame. Her ideas challenge this prevailing culture, proving that power and authority are as essential as love and good intentions to effective parenting. Akin to a private session with Dr. Grosshans, Beyond Time-Out enables parents to reflect upon their own behavior and readjust an unbalanced family structure.  Offers an original, effective, and easy-to-implement five-step discipline program “ You know a child-rearing book is good when you find yourself preaching its dogma to anyone who will listen.” —Chicago Tribune

About the Authors Beth A. Grosshans, PhD is a clinical psychologist in private practice with over 15 years of clinical experience working with children and their families. She has taught a child development course at the Princeton Center for Montessori Teacher Education for over eight years. Janet H. Burton, LCSW is a clinical social worker with over 35 years of experience working with families. She held the position of adjunct faculty member for the School of Social Work at Rutgers University.
