With the rapidly changing landscape of communication technologies, graduates will need a fundamental understanding of how messages are created, managed, received and interpreted, along with theoretical understanding and critical skills to adapt to new communication technologies within a wide range of careers. The liberal arts emphasis in the communication and media arts program equips you with the skills you need to adapt and grow in this evolving field.
EXPERIENCE YOUR FUTURE Sterling College’s communication and media art major allows for opportunities to gain professional experience through field work related to your concentration. You will complete an internship in your area of interest, allowing you the opportunity to apply what you have learned in the classroom and learn from professionals in your field. CONCENTRATIONS CINEMA PRODUCTION Students interested in producing and directing, script writing, audio and video production, and film studies will benefit from this concentration. Learn to use the software and audio equipment necessary for cinema production as well as the fine art of storytelling.
COMMUNICATION ARTS Do you like to be the star of the show? Students interested in performance and rhetoric should choose this concentration. You will study interpersonal communication, oral interpretation, argumentation, and organizational and gendered communication.
JOURNALISM The field of journalism is rapidly changing with the growth of online news and broadcasting. Join the field by preparing with classes in broadcast news, print journalism, editing and post production, and media law.
MULTIMEDIA PRODUCTION Studying topics such as computer graphics, web design, multiple camera production and visual communication, students will learn about the various multimedia tools used in television, radio, Internet and print media.
PUBLIC RELATIONS Businesses and organizations need employees who specialize in public relations to manage the message they send in advertising, press releases and even Facebook posts. Students in this concentration will study marketing, organizational communication and psychology, design, computer graphics, media law and ethics.

MEET OUR FACULTY... DR. RAYMOND ANDERSON, ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR OF COMMUNICATION Anderson has an eclectic background with work experience in marine sciences, business, communication, film and media arts. His love of the dramatic arts and helping Christian theater ministries led him to switch directions later in life from his day job of managing Jamaica’s largest fish farming operation to completing a Ph.D. in Communication at Regent University. He went on to teach at George Fox University in Newberg, Ore. Anderson also holds a B.S. in Natural Sciences from University of the West Indies and an M.B.A. in General Management from Nova Southeastern University. AARON KENNEDY, ASSISTANT PROFESSOR OF THEATRE Kennedy has worked in theatre for many years. Prior to coming to Sterling College, he worked at The New Court Theatre, Helen Hocker Theatre, Lon Morris College, Neosho County Community College, Salina Community Theatre, Emporia State University Summer Stock and Madison Reparatory Theatre. He received his M.F.A. in Scenic Design from the University of Wisconsin – Madison and his B.F.A. in Theatre rom Emporia State University.Univ
KEN TROYER, ASSISTANT PROFESSOR OF COMMUNICATION Troyer taught for 13 years in Kansas public schools as a forensics and debate coach and teaching public speaking and drama. His teams won multiple state championships with individual students not only winning state championships, but national titles as well. Under his direction, the SC debate and forensics team has captured multiple state championship titles as well as placed 9th in the nation in 2010-2011 and 12th in 2011-2012. He is currently co-authoring a textbook on argumentation and debate. He has been named the Kansas Speech Communication Association Educator of the Year as well as the Sterling College Teacher of the Year. Troyer’s favorite classes to teach include: gendered communication, interpersonal communication and political communication. He earned his B.A. in History and Social Sciences from Bethel College and his M.S. in Communications from Fort Hays State University. MATTHEW WINNING, ASSISTANT PROFESSOR OF THEATRE Winning has been acting in both educational and professional theatres up and down the East Coast since 3rd grade. Some career highlights include Puck in A Midsummer Night’s Dream with the North Carolina Stage Company, Riff in West Side Story with Albany New York’s Park Playhouse, and Mike Howard in the world premiere of the award-winning play Dogfall with the Millennium Playhouse in Boiling Springs, N.C. Winning received his M.F.A. in Acting from Regent University and his B.A. in Theatre Arts and Political Science from Gardner-Webb University.
