We study the language behind nature and the infinite from a Christian perspective, allowing you to truly appreciate the beauty and majesty in the creator God. Our professors have diverse backgrounds, giving students insight on the many possibilities that await upon graduation with a degree in mathematics. The math major at Sterling College builds a wide foundation of the mathematical fields, allowing students to explore the physical sciences and find an academic pursuit that is exciting and interesting. For the student interested in teaching mathematics in the secondary school, our classes have been crafted to prepare you for the proper examinations necessary for licensure upon graduation. Join us as we study the concrete applications and the abstract theory behind the world of mathematics.


NO GIANT LECTURE HALLS HERE The small class sizes at Sterling College allows full access to your professors both in the classroom and during office hours. Our math professors will know you by name and have time to meet with you individually if you have questions. You will also become familiar with your peers as you attend classes together and form study groups.


CONCENTRATIONS We offer 10 (binary) concentrations.

APPLIED MATHEMATICS Students interested in applied mathematics topics such as engineering and meteorology will gain a basic understanding of a variety of mathematical topics to prepare them for graduate school. You will study courses such as numerical analysis, linear algebra, differential equations, and information systems theory and practice.

EDUCATION LICENSURE The mathematics major works with the Department of Education to offer licensure in secondary mathematics education for grades 6-12. Students complete a series of professional studies classes that will allow them to hone their pedagogical skills and learn from working professionals as they spend time in local classrooms. Graduates from this program are prepared to take the Praxis II, the required licensure test for

Here are just a few of the options you will have with a degree in mathematics. Actuarial scientist, data analyst, market analyst, teacher or professor, statistician, engineering school, investment analyst, and economic analyst. Our math majors spend time using their skills to help others. From tutoring students to working with businesses in the community, we emphasize servant leadership by putting it into practice.



CHOOSE YOUR CAPSTONE Every senior completes their degree with a research paper on a specific topic that they find interesting. You can choose a topic that fits your future career, a content area that you want to explore further or maybe that subject you saw on NOVA and want to know more about. With guidance from your professor, you will spend your time preparing a research paper to fulfill the class requirements, to become a skilled researcher and to build your resume!


MEET OUR FACULTY... MEGAN FRALEY, ASSISTANT PROFESSOR OF MATHEMATICS Megan Fraley came to Sterling College from the University of Nebraska at Kearney where she taught in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics. The focus of her studies has been applied mathematics and mathematical biology. Fraley earned her B.S. in Mathematics from Doane College where she also completed a minor in business administration. She also holds an M.S. in Mathematics from the University of Nebraska at Lincoln. DR. ADEBUKOLA GBADE-OYELAKIN, ASSISTANT PROFESSOR OF MATHEMATICS Dr. Adebukola Gbade-Oyelakin specializes in statistics and its applications. She is in the process of publishing results from her doctoral dissertation along with some of the research results from her pre-doctoral research. Gbade-Oyelakin has a diverse undergraduate experience earning her B.S. in Mathematics from Salem College with minors in computer science and studio arts. During her time at Salem, she was the captain of both the volleyball and tennis teams. She earned her M.A. in Mathematics from Wake Forest University and her Ph.D. in Mathematics from Howard University. Dr. Gbade-Oyelakin currently holds the Talmon Bell Chair of Mathematics at Sterling College.
