he detective camera, a name first applied by the British inventor Thomas Bolas (1848–1932) in 1881, includes a broad range of hand-held cameras usually associated with the introduction of commercially manufactured sensitized photographic materials. The genre includes box cameras, such as Eastman’s original Kodak camera, as well as those that were cleverly disguised as personal accoutrements, such as books, parcels, or watches. While not exactly designed for espionage, detective cameras were intended to obtain candid photographs in a surreptitious manner. So-called spy cameras, while technically embraced in this definition, have been included in this book with the subminiature cameras due to their small size.
