LEADING WITH EXCELLENCE: SPOTLIGHT ON KOREDE DEMOLA-ADENIYI
In an insightful interview with Korede Demola- Adeniyi, the Alternative Bank’s first female Executive Director (ED), we explored her career journey, personal reflections, and diverse interests. From family traditions influencing her banking aspirations to the importance of competence in leadership, the conversation offered a nuanced understanding of this accomplished professional.
With candid revelations about her passions, preferences, and even settling the Jollof debate, the interview provided a comprehensive glimpse into the multifaceted persona contributing to the success of Alternative bank.
Icebreaker:
a. As we celebrate Women's Month and shine a spotlight on inspiring women, if you could have dinner with any historical woman, who would it be and why?
KDA: I would love to have dinner with Michelle Obama. I believe she has had a profound impact on the way a black family entered the White House, marking a historic first. What's remarkable is the absence of scandals during their time there, and even to this day, there are no scandals associated with the Obamas. Michelle and her husband continue to exemplify what it means to be in the limelight and still navigate it successfully.
I've had the opportunity to read one or two of her books, and I am thoroughly impressed with her perspective, thoughts, and upbringing. It resonates with me, reflecting a similar upbringing to mine. Observing what she has become despite her early experiences is truly inspiring. If I had the chance to ask her a question, I would inquire about what keeps her going and maintaining resilience in the face of challenges. Michelle Obama is someone I admire greatly.
Professional Journey:
a. Reflecting on your career, can you highlight a key turning point or experience that significantly influenced your journey as a banker?
KDA: I always aspired to be a banker, and the roots of that ambition trace back to a special tradition my mom had for each of us, her kids. At a certain age, she would take us to the bank, open an account on our behalf, granting us a sense of ownership even before we truly had it. When we turned 18, we revisited the bank to change signatories, and she handed the account over to us. It was a powerful moment, and it instilled in me a sense of control and responsibility.
During those years, banks were characterized by long queues, and the branch manager held a significant position akin to a king, emerging in a suit. The idea of being at work, appearing important, and looking good appealed to me. When my father asked about my career choice upon finishing school, I promptly expressed my desire to work in a bank. He took the initiative to connect with acquaintances, ensuring I could take the necessary tests to secure a position. This decision has shaped a remarkably fulfilling career, and I wouldn't have chosen differently.
In banking, I've had the privilege of interacting with individuals from various professions worldwide. Regardless of one's background, financial transactions, including salaries, eventually pass through a bank. Whether you are part of an NGO or any other sector, the diverse spectrum of clients and their financial activities contributes to the overall revenue of the bank. This exposure has allowed me to provide advice and assistance to a wide range of individuals seeking financial guidance.
b. Careers often come with surprising plot twists. Could you share a 'plot twist' moment in your professional journey that unexpectedly propelled you to the peak of your career
KDA: In my career, one standout moment was in treasury at a previous financial institution. Quick thinking was essential as decisions had to be made swiftly in the fast-paced market. The combination of speed and accuracy was crucial, but the treasury environment allowed for learning from mistakes within limits. An opportunity arose when the Central Bank of Nigeria aimed to bridge the gap between market and official rates of the exchange market.
We seized the opportunity, opening Bureau de Change (BDC) accounts rapidly to secure a substantial market share. My bank, at the time, ended up banking a significant portion of the BDCs, translating to a considerable percentage of the revenue.
Despite challenges, such as internal issues, we swiftly addressed them. This experience revealed my ability to manage projects, handle sales, and maintain control. It affirmed my capacity to diversify skills and responsibilities, marking a significant career milestone.

Leadership and Vision:
a. In the spirit of International Women's Day 2024 and its campaign theme, 'Inspire Inclusion,' how do you plan to support and empower for women's inclusion within the banking sector and other communities you influence?
KDA: As the first woman Executive Director (ED) here, I'm grateful for the opportunity. It's not just about breaking barriers; it's about showcasing competence. I'm not just a woman; I'm a competent one, and that's the message I want to spread. Let's work together to make history, ensuring no one says, 'She didn't choose a woman.' Our success as a team defines our collective achievement, and I'm excited about the potential for more competent women to rise, turning fortunes around for the bank. It's a testament to our ongoing efforts, and I look forward to witnessing the positive impact we can make together
b. If you had a wand, what's the one thing you would change in the corporate world?
KDA: In the spirit of International Women's Day, if I had a wand, one thing I'd prioritize is mentoring. As of today,
I've mentored numerous individuals, both women and men, and actively participate in mentoring groups within various institutions.
This commitment serves a dual purpose –it inspires, recognizing that everyone's journey is unique, and it keeps me connected with individuals at different career levels, helping me understand the perspectives of younger generations.
Being a mentor allows me to influence others in aspects such as work, values, and relationship management. Women, especially, often face challenges discussing personal matters. While I am happily married today, I emphasize the importance of finding a confidant – someone who supports you through life's journey. Choosing the right person is crucial; misguided advice can lead to complications. It's a reminder that we can't navigate life in isolation; having
trustworthy friends to share vulnerabilities, truths, and enjoyable moments is essential.
This philosophy extends to my professional life, where my colleagues know I prioritize a positive work environment. I strive to show that life doesn't have to be overly serious. My message is clear: embrace life, have fun, and create space to be yourself. Life is too precious to be taken too seriously. I encourage those around me to come to work with smiles, fostering a workplace where positivity thrives.
Challenges and Successes:
a. What challenges have you faced as a woman in a leadership position, and how have these experiences shaped your approach to leadership?
KDA: In the early stages of my career, I wasn't particularly focused on feminist ideals. However, as I matured, I came to understand the need for change to reach my career goals. I noticed that confidence, even in the absence of knowledge, often carried weight.
This realization nudged me towards adopting a more assertive way of communicating. I recognized the importance of speaking up to ensure others acknowledged my abilities and offered opportunities.
Facing challenges, I learned the importance of having a supportive figure in my corner, especially in certain positions. I sought to build a persona beyond my professional identity, guided by a mentor. Overcoming the hesitation to apply for roles and proactively making my presence known became crucial, forming a significant part of my journey.
Another challenge arose from the assumption that I couldn't leave my previous bank. Breaking this stereotype required a shift in mindset. Fortunately, my husband's unwavering support enabled me to pursue career growth, even if it meant relocating.
This experience taught me that obstacles are opportunities for growth. I confronted challenges with the encouragement of previous bosses, maintaining a supportive network that motivates me to face obstacles in my unique way.
b. Behind every success, there's usually a funny twist. Can you share a moment in your career that not only brought a smile to your face but also taught you something valuable?
KDA: In a defining period of my career, a very senior colleague in my previous employment referenced not knowing what I did in my day to day. Despite this uncertainty, they presented me with a significant challenge – to develop a groundbreaking product for the multinational corporation. Crafting such a product for a large corporation posed inherent challenges, but I tackled the task with determination.
Hard work and a confident pitch paid off when the multinational corporation not only acknowledged but eagerly embraced the idea. This achievement goes beyond financial gains; it serves as a testament to the power of persistence and innovative thinking in the professional realm.
It stands as a vivid reminder that, even in the face of initial skepticism, unwavering dedication and forward thinking can lead to substantial career achievements.
Advice and Inspiration:
a. What advice do you have for young women aspiring to reach leadership positions in the corporate world?
KDA: As a woman, there are multiple aspects to juggle. If you're not married and have the opportunity to travel, seize it. Traveling isn't just about having fun; it's a profound learning experience. Every journey introduces you to new people, each offering valuable lessons. People often talk about my smiling personality, and that's because I enjoy meeting others. Learning isn't confined
to formal settings—I've gleaned insights from my kid sister, my kids, and diverse encounters.
Before settling down, especially when nothing limits you, open yourself to various experiences. Read, travel, and expand your mind. As you progress in life, be diligent in choosing a life partner who shares your values and aspirations. Have a true friend— a confidant who supports you and speaks the truth. In the professional realm, prioritize excellence. It's not about being a lady; it's about being competent. Many women today aspire to be recognized for their competence, not just for the sake of diversity or inclusion.
One key piece of advice is to have mentors. It costs nothing, and people often enjoy giving back by sharing the mistakes they've made. Identifying your limitations is crucial; work on what you can and accept what you can't change. For instance, I couldn't speak in public years ago, but now I confidently address audiences. Mistakes are inevitable; don't be too hard on yourself. Get back up, learn from the experience, and strive to be bold so that the same mistakes don't recur
b. If you could go back in time and give your younger self career advice, what would it be, and would you slip in any hints about the exchange market?
KDA: If I could advise my younger self, I'd say, "Don't be scared." There was a time when I hesitated to promote myself, thinking it meant putting myself in an uncomfortable position. However, I mean this in a metaphorical sense—don't hide your talents. Share what you know with the world because that's how you progress. Don't limit yourself; instead, read extensively. Reading opens up limitless possibilities beyond your office role. It helps you enhance your skills at work and discover valuable knowledge in various fields.
As a young girl, you're bound to make mistakes. Don't dwell too much on them; learn from each experience and move forward. Most importantly, find a mentor. Their guidance is invaluable in navigating your journey.
Now, regarding the recent happenings in the foreign exchange market, I've always been prudent with money. My advice would be to keep a vigilant eye on foreign market trends and make choices that align with your financial goals. It's all about being strategic and ensuring
you make the best financial decisions for yourself.
Closing out:
a. Beyond the boardroom, what's a passion or hobby you have that people might be surprised to know about?
KDA: As I mentioned, it's no surprise that I love exploring new places. However, what might catch people off guard is the abundance of energy I have to move around. Despite having limited time, when I'm set free, you'll find me on the dance floor—yes, I love to dance.
Another unexpected aspect is the contrast between my quiet demeanor in the office and my lively personality outside. People often wonder why I'm reserved at work but more expressive elsewhere.
Lastly, the real surprise for many is that I have a set of twins. Given my age, some might expect I should have had them earlier, but that's just my unique story.
b. If you could swap jobs for a day with anyone in the world, who would it be and why?
KDA: If I were to switch jobs with someone, I would choose to step into the shoes of Madam Okonjo Iweala. I admire her remarkable trajectory. In her current position, I know she's actively working to support Nigeria in overcoming the current economic challenges.
What I appreciate most is the absence of significant stories of corruption or controversy surrounding her. She strikes me as a woman who stands firmly on the
right side of the law, having previously aided us in various ways.
Sitting in her office, observing her approach and understanding what makes her tick differently, would be a fascinating experience. One notable quality is her absence from the shadows of questionable dealings, which adds to the admiration I hold for her.
c. If you had to be the deciding vote in a friendly culinary debate, would you lean towards Ghanaian Jollof or Nigerian Jollof?
KDA: I don't get why it's always a Ghana Nigeria jollof showdown. Let's set the record straight—it's the Senegalese who actually have the jollof crown!
Sure, Ghana has its version, but the origin story? That's a West African tale, and Senegal is the unsung hero. Now, as a patriotic Nigerian, my allegiance lies with Nigerian jollof.
d. And for an extra challenge, Egusi and Pounded Yam or the classic Abula ( Amala, Gbegiri and Ewedu) where does your culinary allegiance lie?
KDA: Pounded yam might be a delicacy for some, but it wasn't part of my childhood culinary adventures. I never quite adjusted to it. Instead, I will opt for the comforting embrace of amala, ewedu, and gbegiri. There's something about that combination that resonates with my taste buds and brings a sense of home.

Growing up, my brother would always decouple old devices and we would watch him recouple it. Over the years, he started building mini games on the desktop computer and would allow us to critique. I was fascinated at the fact that in the comfort of his room, he could do so much. At the slight opportunity I had to access an application and have an input in its development, I just knew there was no turning back.

Hmmmm.... This would have to be the School Management Solution I worked on as the Designer. It is a security and management system built to ensure accountability, collect and store accurate student and staff data, and keep the school/parents updated about the activities of their wards/students. This covered staff management, attendance signing, class assessment, behavioral pattern, school news, results, etc. It was quite exciting working on this, as a lot of thought went into how to present the solution in an intuitive way that would be easy to use for the different parties, while also ensuring a sync between the different portals/applications designed for the different users (Admin, Parents & Teachers)
Challenges and Triumphs:
- As a woman in tech, what unique challenges have you faced, and how did you conquer them?
I have been lucky enough to relate so far with people (personal and workspace), who do not believe that gender affects your ability. I do my work, take feedback, improve myself and come back better, surpassing expectations. I let my work speak for me, and do not allow myself to get boxed.

Innovations and Projects:
Every project comes with its challenges. One that stands out is when I started to learn React and was assigned my first React project. Let's just say it didn't go too well at first, and I had to start all over.
It was a humbling experience but also a great learning opportunity. It taught me the importance of perseverance and continuous learning in this field.
Challenges and Triumphs:
One challenge that is peculiar to women in tech is that we often have to shout to be heard in the room. It can be frustrating at times, but I've learned to focus on creating value rather than dwelling on being seen or heard. I've found that when you focus on delivering excellent work, recognition follows naturally.

My advice to young women eyeing a tech career is simple: don't let fear hold you back. The tech industry can be intimidating, but the only way to grow is to step out of your comfort zone. Do it scared, do it afraid, and if you fail, dust yourself off and try again. The journey may not always be easy, but it will be worth it.

I would say, Altmall (an asset financing ecommerce platform). I led the product build from ideation to launch. From setting up a team of seasoned engineers to identifying and prioritizing key features, to the multiple iterations and stakeholder management. We also had to strategically navigate the almost saturated fin-tech industry in Nigeria. Although the project was quite challenging, it was essential to growing my adaptability, collaboration, communication, and resilience.
It provided me with a wonderful opportunity for learning and career growth.
Challenges and Triumphs:
As a woman in tech, what unique challenges have you faced, and how did you conquer them?
I would say my major challenge has been minimal mentorship support. I naturally like to meet and interact with people who have paved the future and learn from their failures and achievements. Historically, the tech industry is male dominated and the absence of female mentors make it challenging for women like me to see themselves succeeding in the tech industry and advancing their careers.
To overcome this, I volunteer as a mentor for various women empowerment programs. My most recent is at Wentors, a mentorship program targeted at women in tech to create an inclusive environment for us to feel supported, valued, and empowered to grow. Through this platform, I have made connections with senior and peer mentors and mentees, and we have helped each other's professional development in return.
Tech Trends Faves:
Any current tech trends that have you buzzing with excitement?
Definitely AI. I strongly believe it has the potential to drive innovation. From data analysis to personalization to automation just to mention a few. I see tech experts using this as a competitive edge, and I am excited to see how it will evolve and shape the future of tech.
Words of Wisdom: What golden advice would you give to young women eyeing a tech career?
Don’t Stop Learning. This is a mantra I have always lived by. As we all know, the tech industry is constantly evolving. There are new innovations emerging regularly and to remain relevant and competitive, you must stay abreast of the latest trends and advancements. You can only do this by learning.

THE RISE OF GOLD QUEENS: WOMEN SHAPING GOLD INVESTING THROUGH HISTORY
In the financial storybook, women's powerful roles often got overlooked. But when we look back at history, a fascinating tale unfolds — one where women, with sharp insight, left an enduring mark on the gold market. From ancient queens to today's entrepreneurs, their journey in gold investment is a story of innovation and empowerment.
In ancient civilizations like Egypt and Rome, women weren't just good at managing wealth; they were smart investors in precious metals, especially gold. Their decisions played a big part in shaping early economies. But things changed during the Renaissance, pushing women to the sidelines, taking away their right to own wealth or make financial decisions.
Fast-forward to the late 1800s and early 1900s, women started breaking free, making their mark in areas usually dominated by men. During the California Gold Rush, pioneers like Mary Ellen Pleasant defied norms, making fortunes through clever investments in gold and real estate.
Today, we see more women in the gold market, but there are still barriers to their full inclusion. As the world celebrates International Women's Day 2024, Altinvest, the ethical investment platform by The Alternative Bank, sees the untapped potential of women as investors.
